00:00Browns rookie minicamps over the weekend. This man was there, Lance Reisland, Cleveland.com and 92.3 The Fan. Coach,
00:07welcome to the show.
00:08What's going on, guys?
00:10Oh, just thinking about football, dreaming about football, and 50 Burgers. I'll ask you, what stood out to you about
00:16Browns rookie minicamps this weekend?
00:20Well, you know, obviously they're not in pads and everything gets blown. Everybody lives in the extremes.
00:25You know, you take it for what it's worth, but I thought their movement skills were so much better than
00:31they've been.
00:32There's a real influx of athleticism and guys who can run a little bit better than they've had.
00:36So, you know, at all positions, you know, obviously when you're not blocking, when you don't have pads on, you
00:41know, I look for traits.
00:42I look for fundamentals. I look for things that, you know, effort and things like that.
00:45They play with a lot of passion and they can really move.
00:47And the movement skills were most evident with those guys up front.
00:51Fano is a guy who's 300 plus pounds and the kid can really move his feet.
00:55So I defended you last week to Nick, and to the point where I said, I was like, you know,
01:00Coach would, if his wife was out there running routes, he'd be like, she's not doing it fluid enough.
01:06Like, I believe.
01:07I think it was his mom. Yeah, the mom.
01:09I switched it up because Coach had a really nice post about his mom over the weekend, and then I
01:12felt bad.
01:13Yeah, so we switched that up.
01:16Six years since she passed away.
01:18Thinking about you, buddy. Love you.
01:20Almost had me in tears there, Coach, but that's neither here nor there.
01:22So we switched it up.
01:23So anyway, what I was defending, though, was the idea that you talked about KC Concepcion, and I read your
01:32whole report.
01:32I did.
01:33I took it in top to bottom, but I do have to wonder if you are, in fact, shielding KC
01:37Concepcion.
01:38When I leave, the commentary around him was, and again, Nick has coined it, can't catch KC Concepcion.
01:45Like, we have also, Concepcion, no reception.
01:48No reception.
01:49Coach, he was dropping balls that were unguarded.
01:51He was just dropping passes, and I, where was the, where was the commentary?
01:56Well, here's the thing.
01:57I, once again, that's the, for me, that's the easy way out.
02:01So if I'm not, if I'm not putting that out there, I apologize, but obviously it's like, you know, you're,
02:06he drops one pass, which he did.
02:09He dropped a number of passes, and I've always talked about his natural catching ability.
02:13Now, could he have some drop issues?
02:15Yes, but it's not because he can't do it.
02:17And whatever reason it is, you know, when you look at, like, Anthony Schwartz, he couldn't do it.
02:20All right, coach, coach, coach, real quick, coach, real quick, you can't laud somebody's natural catching ability and then, and
02:29then say, does he have drop issues?
02:32Well, of course he does.
02:33Those are, those are diametrically opposite things that you're saying.
02:37I would say he's got natural drops with some ability to catch the ball occasionally.
02:42No, I, I disagree occasionally because the first, the narrative is he drops one.
02:47Everybody goes, oh, see, he dropped, he dropped everything.
02:49He made a bunch of really nice catches.
02:51And all I mean by that is he catches the ball with his hands.
02:53He doesn't let it into his body.
02:55So when you catch the ball with your hands, that tells me it's not a talent issue.
02:59That tells me you can do it.
03:01And for whatever reason it is, and I'm not saying he's going to, maybe, I don't know.
03:04You would assume he's going to fix it at the NFL level, but you can't fix guys that can't naturally
03:09catch it.
03:09That's the reality of it.
03:11So, you know, obviously what you're saying, I, you know, I'll live with the, I'll live with it.
03:14But when I see a natural guy pluck it out of the air, like he does, I think he can
03:19get it.
03:19And that's just how I work.
03:20And he does.
03:21He naturally catches it.
03:22He just has moments of lapse and you can almost see it with him sometimes.
03:26And for me, it's when he's turning his head up field to get into what pays his bills, which is
03:30run after catch.
03:31Why should we assume it gets corrected in the NFL level?
03:33You say we should assume it gets corrected.
03:35Why should we assume that?
03:37Attention to detail.
03:38They'll work, you know, even this weekend, the thing that was going back to the movement skills, these coaches right
03:44now, I love the way they coach.
03:46It's a little bit more old school and I'm a little bit older.
03:48The idea of they coach on the run.
03:50So they're, they're constantly giving these guys feedback.
03:53And, you know, when Casey's on there, they're always saying catch it first.
03:56And they're always, they're always focusing on him, looking into his hands, because when he does that, it's, it's, it's
04:02easy for him.
04:02And I will say, working with receivers over the last 30 years, even at the high school level, and sometimes
04:08working with college camps, the idea that guys who, for some reason, the guys who catch it well, but have
04:13drops, are guys that get paid to run after catch.
04:16And I always feel like they're trying to get into their, their phase before they get, they catch it.
04:21And I think that's just a concentration issue and they'll do, and really it comes down to just looking into
04:25your catch over and over and over.
04:28And I think, I really do think that will, it will improve and, and I've seen it before and I've
04:33also seen it not, but I tend to live on the side of, I, when you see him with the
04:37ball in his hands, they're going to figure it out and they're going to rep it.
04:40And if it doesn't work, it won't be for lack of effort.
04:42I think it works.
04:43All right, coach.
04:44I thought this was an interesting note because we really, the last two years, there was a point where Stefanski
04:50and the offense had an identity and people haggled over it.
04:54And then at some point, right after they fired AVP, they kind of lost the identity.
04:58They never got it back.
04:59Even when they thought they were going to have an identity, they never got it back.
05:02But you had said in one of your notes to us, offensive identity under Munkin already feels noticeably different because
05:08of dot, dot, dot.
05:10What is the because of, what are you seeing here that you're starting to see maybe an identity forming well
05:15before training camp?
05:17Well, I see, I see balance.
05:18And what I mean by that is he's a, he's a matchup guy.
05:21We always talk about matchups or receivers and running backs, but for me, he's also a matchup guy up front.
05:26So when we talk about these guys who are versatile up front, getting your five best linemen out there, that
05:30means you can run gap schemes.
05:32You can run zone schemes.
05:33So if you face a team that penetrates, you run more gap schemes because you use angles.
05:36If you face a team that plays a line of scrimmage, you use more double teams in zone.
05:41So you have these, you have this ability to be flexible with the offensive linemen.
05:45And then you talk about not having a number one receiver.
05:48Well, they do have a number one receiver.
05:49It's Harold Fannin Jr.
05:50And everybody talks about, well, he's not a receiver, but what you've done, even though you don't have a number
05:54two receiver is now you have three number two receivers, in my opinion.
05:58And when you have three number two receivers that, that magnifies Harold Fannin, because that's going to create balance with
06:03that defense.
06:04You're going to see pre-snap because they really, the guys are hopefully good enough.
06:08Now these guys got to go out and prove it.
06:09But what I've seen on film, now you have Concepcion, you have Boston, you have Fannin, and you have Junkins
06:15in the box.
06:15Now you're going to create balance.
06:17And now you get Judy being really good at what he is, which is a number two receiver, which means
06:21he's not always getting the primary corner.
06:23Rotation is not always going to him, et cetera.
06:26So I think he becomes better.
06:27And I just think the balance and the idea of we're going to attack what the defense does poorly, if
06:33they're a certain style, we have the versatility up front with guys who can move, guys who understand the game
06:39of football.
06:39They're not maulers, but they understand where to be.
06:42They're pretty good in pass protection.
06:43And then you can attack.
06:45And because you have pretty solid, you know, you have one A-plus on that offense.
06:49In my opinion, I think Harold Fannin is the A-plus.
06:52But now you had an A-plus.
06:53He was a rookie.
06:54And you had a bunch of C-minuses around him.
06:57Now you've got a bunch of B-pluses around him.
06:59But you also have guys like Isaiah Bond and Sed Tillman.
07:03Now they're fourth and fifth receivers, and they've made plays at the NFL level, which tells you now maybe they're
07:08better in their role because we're thinking of them as fourth and fifth receivers.
07:11So I just think this offense has balance moving forward, and Munkin's really good at finding matchups.
07:16So even though you saw it, and once again, like the motions, the movement, they started that in rookie camp.
07:22It's not something you can add.
07:23It's something that has to be a part of your offense.
07:24So I think he's just going to maximize what he has on offense.
07:27What was your first impressions of Taylon Green?
07:30Well, you know, first, you know, everybody was like, he's not going to compete.
07:33I don't think he's, you know, I'll clarify.
07:35I don't think he's a guy that's going to play this year as a starting quarterback.
07:39But he's also not a gadget guy.
07:41A gadget play or gadget, you know, things that are gadgety people talk or trick plays.
07:45Those are things where multiple people are doing multiple different things on offense that they normally don't do.
07:51And for him, he's just going to be a big physical guy that they can use in the red zone
07:55with the plus-one run game.
07:56So I see him playing this year in the red zone or on third, you know, third down and medium,
08:01third down and short occasionally,
08:03and being the plus-one because on third down and short, you get that seventh, eighth guy down in the
08:07box.
08:08Now Judkins becomes the fullback, and he becomes the tailback, so you have an extra blocker.
08:12But all the offensive line are doing all the same stuff.
08:15And it's different than when you have Judkins in the game because he's not throwing it.
08:19Tim and Green's throwing for 10,000 yards.
08:20Now, there's a lot of mechanical work to do with him, and he's okay in the pocket.
08:24But I think for a guy who's 6'6", runs as well as he does, handles himself, lots of poise
08:30in the pocket,
08:31lots of poise in the huddle, things like that, he's a developmental guy.
08:35But you would like to think, even if he's a developmental guy, you face Josh Allen, you face Lamar Jackson.
08:40You know, if you're facing these guys in the playoffs, which you hope to get to, he's worth a six
08:44-round pick.
08:45You know, having a great scout team quarterback emulate the quarterback you're going to play, that's hard to do,
08:49and he can do a lot of those things.
08:50So, I don't know, I was very impressed with his poise, everything I thought he did well, I thought he
08:56did very well.
08:56He threw the ball better from the pocket.
08:58He's a little bit inconsistent with his accuracy, which is a lot with his footwork.
09:02He's a developmental guy, and he's got a long way to go, and it's a year or two from I
09:07think he's competing for the starting job
09:08or a starting job or, you know, the idea of being a starter.
09:11But I think his tools are fantastic, and he's a guy that will help whatever his role is.
09:16All right, Coach, Brennan Sorsby, Cincinnati, turned Texas Tech, not quarterback,
09:22might end up going to the supplemental draft.
09:25I'm not sure if you've looked at his tape yet, but if you have, would you be comfortable if the
09:30Browns took him
09:31in the supplemental draft this summer?
09:34Well, I'm going to say no, and here's why.
09:36I just think the Browns, you know, they started off, this is a kid.
09:39Now, I will say this.
09:40I like to give kids second chance.
09:41I've never been a believer in a kid makes a mistake, and I know he made thousands of mistakes.
09:47I get all that.
09:48But does he have a problem, or is it a character issue?
09:50And those are things that you have to figure out as a GM, because if he has a problem,
09:54you help him get a problem.
09:55You fix that problem.
09:56But if it's a character issue, those things don't go away, right?
09:59You never lose your stripes.
10:00So that would be my first thing.
10:02Talent-wise, he's 6'3", he's 225, 230.
10:06He can make all the throws.
10:07He's a really talented guy.
10:08I just think where the Browns are at and what they've done around their offense, I think
10:13they've got to go with the quarterbacks they have.
10:15And then I think, I believe the quarterbacks they have on the roster, I think they have
10:20a few guys that they can win with.
10:23And if you've got a guy you can win with because you have more pieces around them, your special
10:28teams are just a wash, and your defense being what it's going to be.
10:31Now, I think the defense will be better.
10:33I think it takes a step back, maybe early, but it's better late because those guys are a
10:37year older.
10:37And I just think that they have a chance to win a lot of games with a quarterback they
10:41can win with, and I think it's on their roster.
10:44And then if they want to go out and it doesn't work, you've got some pieces around them.
10:49Now you go maybe in 27, because there's a lot of really good quarterbacks in 2027.
10:53But I think right now, you're wanting to win week one.
10:57And I say that all the time.
10:58I know it gets redundant, but they've got to win week one.
11:00And I think they have quarterbacks on the roster that can with these guys around them a
11:03little bit better.
11:04So we'll see what happens.
11:05But I'm going to go no, just because they don't need that kind of, they've had enough
11:09with that kind of stuff in their locker room right now.
11:12I wish the kid the best, but I think there's other quarterbacks in 27 you can go after.
11:16Coach, great stuff, buddy.
11:18Appreciate you.
11:19Dynamite stuff this weekend at Browns Rookie Minicamp.
11:21Dynamite stuff today.
11:23Absolutely, guys.
11:23Thanks for talking to me, and I'll talk to you guys soon.
11:26Lance Rislin, 92.3 The Fan, and of course, Cleveland.com.
