00:00Our good friend, Coach Reyes, Lance Reisland.
00:02You can find his work over on cleveland.com.
00:04You can hear him right here from time to time on The Fan joining us now.
00:08Coach, what's going on?
00:10What's going on, my friend?
00:11Happy Wednesday.
00:12Happy Wednesday.
00:13Coach, slow time during football season right now.
00:16Not a lot happening.
00:17The question to be had, is LeBron holding your attention?
00:21You know, after 2016, I'm kind of okay with whatever he does.
00:26I have not been on pins and needles.
00:28You know, he's a little bit older.
00:31I'll never forget that night here with my wife.
00:33We were watching, went crazy.
00:35So I would love to see him come back, but I'm not attached to it like I was when he
00:41left
00:41and when he came back the first time.
00:44Coach, I'll have you know, the only Cleveland sports moment that has legitimately brought
00:48me to tears was that moment, 2016.
00:49That's the only one.
00:51Oh, it's incredible.
00:53I'll never forget it.
00:54We were in the basement.
00:54Me and my wife were watching.
00:55We were jumping around, you know, our daughter was two years old.
00:59We were just going absolutely crazy.
01:01It was nuts.
01:02It's something I'll never forget.
01:03Absolutely.
01:04There's no doubt about it.
01:05All right, Coach.
01:06I know you're still dialed in to everything happening around the Browns right now.
01:08I know you're still watching film and doing everything that you need to do to be ready
01:12for the upcoming season.
01:14I need you to put on the coaching brain right now because we're getting close to when we
01:20should see Deshaun's quarterback camp and inviting everybody down to South Florida happening.
01:25And I didn't know for you, if you were Todd Munkin right now, how close are you monitoring
01:30this entire camp situation?
01:32How both guys are handling it?
01:33Whether or not Shador is doing his own camp.
01:35If he shows up, how he's interacting with it.
01:37Just how close of an eye do you have on all of that?
01:40I would want to know what's going on, but these are grown men.
01:44Obviously, I dealt with the high school level, college level.
01:46You're dealing with kids or just becoming adults.
01:50These are grown men who everybody's showing pictures and videos of them working out.
01:55They're doing what they're supposed to be doing as pros.
01:58I think it's a good thing.
01:59It builds camaraderie.
02:00I think it's if done right and they work on their craft.
02:04All these guys, they work at what they're doing.
02:07Now, people are seeing it a lot more this year because of the competition they're making
02:12between these two.
02:13But I'm okay with it.
02:14As long as they do the right things and they're running, we used to say game routes, and they're
02:18doing whatever they can to get ready for week one.
02:22And once again, you don't want to peak in early August.
02:24You want to peak in September.
02:25So I think it's more of an idea of getting together and hanging out together because you're
02:29going to be spending a lot of time together here for the next six months.
02:33So if it came down to Shador, do you really even feel like he has the option to host his
02:37own sort of camp rivaling to Sean?
02:39Or is that just from a team camaraderie standpoint, just not something you do?
02:45Well, you know, for me, I would hope he would be there with down with the Sean.
02:48You know, obviously you don't want any, you don't want, these guys are competing against
02:52each other.
02:52But the end of the, at the end of the day, it's about winning football games.
02:56And when people say this guy's ahead or this guy, it doesn't really matter.
02:59In fact, when they said the Sean was ahead a little bit, when we heard that kind of
03:03narrative, that's okay because it's a new offense and he's been around a long time.
03:07And then he wasn't named the, you know, the starter.
03:10So that means Shador's coming back strong.
03:12None of that really like kind of stuck with me because it doesn't matter to get the pads
03:16on.
03:16You would hope the guy who's been in the league for 10 years can pick up terminology and
03:20things like that.
03:21Formations and long play calls and killing it and can, can all the things they got to do
03:25just because he's been around a long time.
03:27So it kind of tells you maybe it's going to be, it's a good thing for Shador because
03:30it's going to be a quarterback competition.
03:32But in regards to that, they shouldn't, they shouldn't be, I want to have a camp because
03:36the Sean had a camp.
03:38And if he wants to have the guys around to throw, that's great.
03:40But it shouldn't be because of the Sean.
03:43It should be because something he wants to do.
03:45In fact, I would love to see him and the Sean working together.
03:49They're both pros.
03:50They're both getting paid a lot of money to be a quarterback.
03:52They got to help each other.
03:53And, you know, obviously they're competing, but you don't want that animosity where they're
03:57split in that locker room.
03:58You want them to compete, but you don't want it to be the Sean versus Shador.
04:03This is about winning football games first.
04:06In a similar vein, both these guys made their way back to Berea to practice, you know, at
04:11the team facility at different points during this off season.
04:15Does that matter to anybody actually sitting inside the building, making decisions?
04:19Or is this something that's just, I mean, at the end of the day, more for show?
04:23And because if you're back in Cleveland, it's available to you.
04:26Well, you know, I think it's interesting because obviously got a little bit more of an old school
04:29coach who I'm not sure if that matters for them.
04:32Once again, it shouldn't be if you're coming back to get working great.
04:36If you're coming back because the other one said he was going to that's where the that
04:39for me, that's where the conversation has to like stop.
04:42It has to be about making the football team better.
04:45And, you know, them coming back and getting working, that's great.
04:48Now, to Todd Munkin, I don't think that means very much because Todd Munkin is six years
04:51old and he's thinking about winning games.
04:53He's not thinking about 2027 drafts.
04:56He's not thinking he's thinking about how do I win in Jacksonville?
04:58So he has a level of expectation for his players, regardless if they're in Berea, if they're at
05:04home across the country, your job, you're a pro.
05:07This is your job.
05:09We, you know, we get up and do our jobs every day.
05:11This is what they do for a living.
05:13It's they're kind of the standard that an old school coach has where you can go and
05:17do wherever you want, be wherever you want.
05:19You know, it doesn't matter if you think you're getting on my good side or bad side, really
05:23just comes down to, we got to win ballgames.
05:25And whoever gives us a chance to do that is who's going to play.
05:28Coach Rose, Lance Rising with us here on the hotline.
05:31All right, coach, let's talk about some of the rest of the offense right now.
05:35Jerry Judy, obviously coming up to the end of his contract in Cleveland.
05:39Do you see him as a guy that should have a long-term fit here?
05:42Or are, you know, options kind of just running out?
05:45It's the last year of a contract and you see it playing out that way, especially with a
05:49couple of young guys coming in.
05:51Well, you know, it's funny.
05:52I think Jerry Judy is going to have a great year.
05:53And here's why.
05:55Yeah, obviously last year they were very limited in what they had offensive skill wise.
05:58Guys can make plays on their own.
05:59Now they have some guys that are going to create balance for this offense.
06:02And when you create balance, that means Jerry Judy is not always going to get the best corner.
06:06He's always not going to get coverage rotated to him.
06:10And, you know, it's him and Harold Fannin.
06:11And it really came down when he struggled.
06:13Harold Fannin became the guy.
06:15And getting these guys on offense is going to help all these guys because now they have
06:20balance.
06:20You're going to see true coverage.
06:21You're going to see correct fronts.
06:24And you're going to see it's going to look like a defense should look because they're not
06:28overplaying one guy.
06:29Now, this is all about balance.
06:31So Jerry Judy may not be a number one, but he's a really good number two.
06:35And you may not have a number one in that receiver room, but you've got a lot of number
06:38twos now, you would think, going into camp.
06:40So that's going to, again, create balance.
06:42Now, if they have to stop the pass and play nickel, you would think Judkins and the addressed
06:46offensive line should be better.
06:48If they're going to stay with the three backers look, then that means Harold Fannin, who is
06:52your best, for me, is the Browns' best player on offense.
06:55Again, what everybody else does is important to your best player on offense, which is Harold
07:00Fannin, because now he's going to get safety or, you know, a linebacker or safety coverage.
07:05And if they want to help on Jerry Judy, then he's open.
07:08If Harold Fannin is the guy, then Jerry Judy can get open.
07:11If the best quarter is on Jerry Judy, then one of the young guys.
07:13So it's that idea of balance.
07:15And there might not be some of the numbers, because I don't know if any of these guys
07:19besides Fannin are elite, elite, but you should have really good balance.
07:22And you're going to see week to week where different guys kind of thrived based on what
07:26they see coverage wise and what the other team's trying to stop.
07:29All right, coach, might be a little in the weeds for a lot of people, but I know that
07:32we like to talk a little in the weeds football.
07:34I feel like everybody talks about, you know, reworked offensive line, new offense, a lot
07:39of the weapons you're talking about.
07:40And when they talk about run game, they talk about how does it impact Quinshawn?
07:44How does this impact Dylan Sampson going into year two?
07:47A guy that I think we saw the flashes, but obviously the run game as a whole didn't really live
07:53up to what we wanted it to be, just given the way the offense performed.
07:57Well, one thing we do with coaches, we always try to say, and I'm just as guilty as anybody
08:01else, but we often say, and older coaches like my dad, Coach Munkin, guys who understand
08:06the game, it's such an elite level that it's not about what a guy can't do, it's what a
08:10guy can do.
08:11And, you know, one of the things you hear about Dylan Sampson is he can't pass protect.
08:15He's too small to pass protect.
08:16Well, you didn't draft and pass protect.
08:18And it doesn't mean he doesn't have to do it once in a while.
08:21But for example, if you think about pressure, there's two ways to handle pressure.
08:24You can beat it or you can block it.
08:26And I saw that during even the summer where if Dylan Sampson's in the game, they're going
08:30to try to get five out and they're going to rely on the quarterbacks to beat the blitz
08:35a lot of times and saying, all right, you're going to bring that back or we're going to
08:38replace Sampson in the flat or we're going to run a Texas route or an angle route.
08:41And we're going to beat the blitz instead of always having Dylan Sampson block it.
08:45Because if you're making Dylan Sampson block it, first of all, he's undersized.
08:49Secondly, you're setting him up for failure because that's not why you drafted him.
08:52That's not why you have a touch guy.
08:53So for me, I don't really look at Dylan Sampson as a running back.
08:56I look at him as a touch guy and the guy that you're finding matchups for.
09:00Now, that can be really hard in a Kevin Stefanski system-based offense, but it should be very
09:04exciting in a monk in players over plays offense.
09:07And I think that you're going to see a big year from Dylan Sampson because of that.
09:10They're going to find matchups.
09:12They're going to make him pass protect once in a while, but they're going to say, why
09:15are you in the NFL?
09:16Because you're a really tough matchup.
09:18You're good out of the backfield.
09:19And we got to give you the ball in space.
09:22Offensive line, we saw today Ethan Posick, currently a free agent, obviously with the
09:27Browns last year, medically cleared to return to football activities after his injury.
09:33You look at what the Browns are doing on the offensive line.
09:35They got four out of the five positions set.
09:37And the one that might be shaky, they kind of look to that center position.
09:41It's either going to be Elton Jenkins, Tevin Jenkins next to him, or KT.
09:45You look to Parker Brailsford potentially starting a rookie out of the gate.
09:48Is this a point where if you're Andrew Barry, you start to consider Ethan Posick coming
09:53back, or has that ship already sailed?
09:56I don't think it has.
09:57And obviously, I think Parker Brailsford is a really good player, but he is undersized.
10:02Ethan's a big, big guy.
10:03He's a big center.
10:04So if they cover him, now I never think it hurts to have a veteran, even if he's not a
10:10starter in that room.
10:11That's so vital for those offensive linemen, especially with a guy like Coach Warhop.
10:15Now, what they've done on offense, they haven't fixed the offensive line, but they've addressed
10:19it.
10:19And I think the biggest difference that I've seen as a team, but especially in that offensive
10:25line, is their athletic ability and movement skills to what the offensive line has been
10:29in the past.
10:30These aren't guys who are going to knock you down and maul you like Teller and Posick when
10:34he was in his prime and Vittonio.
10:36These are guys who are going to take correct angles.
10:38They're going to take correct steps.
10:40And they have tremendous feet to get to the second level, pin and pull screens, all the
10:44stuff, basically having them move their feet.
10:47Now, if Ethan Posick can still move his feet at a high level and is, you know, if he can
10:51do that, then yes, he'd be in the mix.
10:53But they've made a really a concerted effort to get very athletic up front.
10:57And I think if his athleticism and he's not hurt, can he do that still?
11:02Because he's always been a good mover as well.
11:03So yeah, that would be, I would be interesting.
11:06I think Parker Brailsford, I'm interested to see when he gets covered, because the only
11:10thing he will struggle with is when they put a big nose on him.
11:13Besides that, he's a really good player, especially getting to that second level.
11:18And he can do a bunch of different things, which is what Munkin wants his offensive lineman
11:21to be able to do.
11:22All right, coach, let's look a little bit more broad topic.
11:26And again, Coach Riz Lance Risen with us here on the hotline.
11:30We see a lot of things.
11:31I know you and I, I can sit here and say we don't see the Browns as the 31st best
11:34roster
11:34in the NFL, but some people nationally do.
11:37And I think part of it is the fact that you don't have necessarily the star players that
11:42you look around the NFL and see when you look at the Browns, is there a billboard player,
11:47a face of the franchise type of guy that you look at?
11:51And I'll take an answer for either side of the ball.
11:53And if you have it for both, and if you don't, that's fine too.
11:56Oh yeah.
11:57I think I'm defense.
11:57It's, uh, it's without question.
11:59It's Carson Schlesinger.
12:00And I say that because when people, you know, there's been some Luke Kuechly comparisons
12:05thrown around and obviously you have to be careful when you say this guy's like Luke
12:10Kuechly because Luke Kuechly is in that, that, uh, elite generational talent kind of
12:14guy.
12:15But the thing that reminds, reminds what Carson Schlesinger's play that reminds me of Luke
12:20Kuechly is his instinct.
12:21So as a linebacker, he believes in what he sees.
12:25And then what he sees to the point where he pulls the trigger and goes, you know, my dad
12:29I was to say, pull the trigger.
12:30When you see what you see, his ability to do that is so incredibly high.
12:35And the things that he did as a rookie.
12:36Now he's always been really smart, but in the NFL, everybody has their tricks.
12:40Everybody knows, everybody knows what they're doing in the NFL.
12:42So he's only going to get smarter to go along with those instincts and those incredible athletic
12:48ability skills and space.
12:50So, uh, without question, I think for me, uh, Carson Schlesinger is the face of that defense.
12:56And I also think he's the, he's the guy who is, um, going to be the all pro, um, quickly.
13:02Now on offense, there's a couple of guys, you know, for me, I think Harold Fannin, um,
13:06is a kind of a guy, I don't know if he's going to be the vocal leader everybody wants, but
13:10this is a guy who is an interesting tight end.
13:12He's 240 pounds.
13:14He's a big receiver.
13:15If he can block just a little bit, he creates such tough matchups, um, especially with the
13:20more depth that they've created on the outside.
13:22So on offense, I'd say Harold Fannin, just because he's so unique and when you're unique
13:26in a player style offense, boy, Monk is going to have a lot of fun with him, finding, finding
13:32the matchups he wants, uh, with formations and personnel groups and things like that,
13:37because these guys are all pretty versatile and they can get a certain personnel group,
13:40but give you a different formation.
13:42So Harold Fannin for one, just because he seems like he's a kid who does everything right.
13:47But Carson Schlesinger is a guy like, if he ascends, like you think he's going to, he
13:51is just, you know what, when I watch him practice, he is so instinctual and he's just, he flies
13:56around.
13:56He loves playing.
13:57Um, yeah.
13:58So without question, both sides of the ball have their guys, but Carson Schlesinger to
14:01me, Carson is the guy who's going to be really special, uh, very quickly.
14:06It's interesting.
14:07Cause I, I feel like obviously we really appreciate him in Cleveland.
14:10I think we all enjoyed his rookie season.
14:11And then we watched him by NFL coaches and execs get ranked as the third off ball linebacker
14:17in the NFL after one year.
14:19Does it almost feel like he's not getting enough love around here with that, uh, you
14:22know, type of praise getting it from his peers?
14:25Well, you know, for me, I think it came down to, uh, you know, J okay.
14:29And I, you know, when people say, what does that mean?
14:31Well, J okay was, and we're just, I was just talking about Carson Schlesinger in this Luke
14:35Kuechly kind of, uh, mold.
14:37And I even think when he was ascending, J okay was maybe even a little bit better than
14:42that, that medium, a little higher ceiling.
14:44That's how scary I think J okay was.
14:46And I think the idea that you lost J okay and can he replace J okay, they're a little
14:50bit different.
14:51Carson's definitely a lot thicker, can play tackle, tackle a lot better, uh, than J okay.
14:55But J okay was a special talent.
14:57Now, when you see all these people talking about, um, how good he is, I think he, the
15:01re one of the reasons he even gets better is the addition of Quincy Williams as good as
15:05Devin Bush was, and he had an outstanding year.
15:08And I was very sorry to hear, uh, very sorry when he left.
15:11However, Quincy Williams brings a leadership quality with him as well.
15:15He understands Ruttenberg's defense, which is going to take a little mental pressure off
15:19of Carson Schlesinger.
15:20Not that he can't handle it, but now he gets to play a little bit more free.
15:23You're talking about a rookie who had to set the defense, be the green dot, make sure
15:27everybody's doing what they're doing and then go make all the plays.
15:30He can still do that, but now he's got a kind of a partner in crime on this leadership
15:34thing, but the big, Jake, the big difference is now he becomes the alpha on defense.
15:38And if I'm offensive coordinator, when I played the Browns for the last nine years, I had to,
15:42I had to block Miles Garrett.
15:44My left tackle was the guy who always needed help regardless of who that left tackle is.
15:48Now it's Carson Schlesinger.
15:49And if I'm thinking it, these really smart offense coordinators are thinking it too.
15:53Carson Schlesinger is going to have to get a lot better.
15:55It becomes he, he becomes the focal point of offensive coordinators that each and every
16:00week.
16:00Coach, we got to run, you know, I always appreciate you setting us out the time.
16:04They gave us a lot of good stuff to, to react to and to talk about your moving forward.
16:08And obviously training camp right around the corner, excited to get to talking a little
16:11bit more.
16:13Absolutely, brother.
16:14We'll see you very soon.
16:15Yep.
16:15No doubt.
16:15Thanks coach.
16:17Lance Reisland, coach Riz.
