00:00He is at Brown's Mandatory Minicamp. Hello, Daryl.
00:03Hello, boys.
00:04Hi, Daryl.
00:05Hey, so the quarterback spoke yesterday, Daryl, and it felt to me, you were there,
00:13felt like a nice group hug. I wanted to hear one of them say, you know what, I'm going to
00:17win this
00:18job. I'm beating everybody out, and I'm going to be the starting quarterback of this team.
00:23I want to hear somebody say that, Daryl.
00:28Okay. Great. Can you go out and actually do it?
00:32Well, nobody said it. Everybody played nice. I'll root for Shadur if he wins the job.
00:38I don't want that. I don't want that. Go beat him out and get the job, Shadur. I'm going to
00:42support the Shadur. No! Go beat him out. I want to hear some competitive talk.
00:49I'm not going to lie. I did chuckle yesterday when Shadur was talking about how it's a team
00:57thing. He doesn't view it as a competition between him and Deshaun. The first thing that
01:01popped into my head was, yeah, but Deshaun certainly views it that way, number one. And
01:06number two, you're going to view it as a competition if he's playing in Jacksonville and you're standing
01:11on the sidelines with an earpiece and a clipboard. So, look, I get where you're coming from, Jeff,
01:19100%. But I don't know if it was one big group hug. I just think that neither one of them
01:26wanted
01:27to make headlines with anything that they said about the other. And I respect that. I understand
01:34that. Obviously, for us, we're all about the quotes and whatnot. And it would have been great
01:38if we got a little spiciness from either one of them. But the fact of the matter is, you've got
01:46to
01:46do it on the field, not with your mouth. And too many times with this franchise over the years, we've
01:50had great talkers, great quotes, and then not so great quarterback play. And quite frankly, we've
01:58not really had good quarterback play out here to begin with. So, that's why I'm like, yeah, I really
02:04don't care if we're going to say you're going to win the job because all I know is when I'm
02:07watching
02:07in practice right now, neither one of you are at a level that will help this football
02:13team win on a consistent basis.
02:16That's what we were wondering. You're not impressed yet?
02:20No, I'm not. And here's the thing. There's no lead dog in the race, okay? Todd Munkin's
02:26been very clear about that. Now, we can have a conversation about whether or not we actually
02:32believe that, whether or not Todd Munkin truly does have a preference or he doesn't have a
02:37preference. But, you know, what he's telling us is that neither one of these guys is taking the
02:43reins of this thing. And I've got to be honest with you, that worries me because I don't think
02:48it's a matter of, well, they've just been so great that it's so neck and neck and such a hard
02:53decision. No. They both have been wildly inconsistent during this offseason program.
02:59And I can say that just in the few practices that we watched, okay? We got three of the
03:05nine or ten OTA practices to view, okay? So there's a pretty significant sample size that
03:11we did not get to witness. But in those three plus the two practices we've seen here, it's
03:17been inconsistent. Yes, both have shown moments of brilliance. And you're just like, whoa, right?
03:23And then on the next play or a couple plays later, like, yikes. So that's the problem. And
03:30I think that's why there's no lead dog in this race because neither one of these guys has been
03:35consistent enough to earn that right. And I'm not going to lie. This is the easy part of the
03:43calendar, okay? It gets harder when training camp starts. And it really does get harder.
03:50And if it is a struggle bus now, what's it going to be like then? And that's what has
03:58me very, very concerned about this whole situation.
04:03All right, Daryl. Tell me something good about OTA. Something that knocked your socks off that
04:09you didn't expect.
04:11Well, these young receivers are fantastic to watch.
04:14You really feel like we have a wide receiving corner.
04:17Well, I don't want to get too carried away because, again, you're in helmets, you're in
04:22shorts and the shirts. But I like what I see from them, okay? Denzel Boston, big body guy,
04:31got quickness to him, has a tremendous catch radius. I just love watching him run routes out
04:40there. Casey Concepcion, yeah, he's got the occasional drop, but he's going to be a big-time
04:47playmaker. You can see that. I think Jerry Judy looks a little better here this spring.
04:54And so I kind of feel like there's been this positive infection in that wide receiver room
05:02where that group, they just look better than a year ago. The other thing, too, is Todd Munkin
05:10gets on the receivers as much as he gets on the quarterbacks in practice.
05:19But I really do like these young receivers and what I'm seeing from them. There's a lot
05:25of positive there.
05:26They threw a lot of resources there, Daryl. And let's include Isaiah Bond in that.
05:31How's Isaiah looked?
05:32Yeah, well, Isaiah might be my favorite of them all. He clearly put in the time this
05:42offseason to reshape his body a little bit. He's put on some good weight. He looks quick,
05:49explosive. His route running looks better as well. He looks comfortable. Talked to him yesterday.
05:54And you can just feel his comfort with everything. Obviously, he came into this thing late in the
06:06game here when they signed him during training camp. But there's a lot of potential with that
06:12guy. And I mentioned this on our video recap that I did with Coach Riz on our YouTube channel
06:22yesterday. I think the two biggest winners of this, or the three biggest winners of this
06:29offseason are Isaiah Bond, Casey Concepcion, and Boston.
06:37The fact that you have three young guys there, Daryl, and Jerry Judy. And you know, Jerry's a competent
06:42pro. But safety in numbers, I mean, we've needed some real talent at wide receiver to emerge for
06:50some time. I am really hopeful that, let's say, two of these three guys become the real deal in the
06:56NFL. And there's no reason that can't be the case, is it?
07:00No, not at all. And I think that's why I'm so excited. It's like, you know, I've done this long
07:06enough to
07:07where like, I actually have to catch myself and temper my enthusiasm, because, you know, we've seen guys have
07:14great offseason programs and whatnot, and then turn around when the rubber meets the road, it ultimately ends up
07:22not being all that great. But it's really difficult for me not to get excited about these
07:28young receivers. And hopefully they can get a quarterback play at a level that allows them to
07:36showcase their talent and skills.
07:39Hey, Daryl, you got a chance to meet Jared Verse, just your Daryl Ryder impressions of him. I mean, I
07:45know
07:45what it's like to watch him on tape. I know, you know, but what does Daryl think of Jared Verse?
07:50Quick first step. The other day, what is this, Thursday? So on Tuesday, he could have had at
07:59least six sacks in that practice. I mean, he's not Miles Garrett, and I'm not trying to compare him
08:07to Miles, because there's only one Miles, and it's just grossly unfair. But like, he kind of did what
08:13Miles Garrett had done over the years, and that's just wreck practice. And I felt like in some ways
08:22the other day, Jared Verse was wrecking practice a little bit with all the virtual sacks that he was
08:30able to tally. So very positive first impression of him. I'm anxious to see him when the pads go on,
08:40and then obviously when we get to the regular season. But boy, as far as first impressions go,
08:45and I know that there's a segment of fans that still don't believe Andrew Berry got enough back
08:51in that trade. But I can see why Andrew Berry absolutely demanded that Jared Verse be included
09:02in that trade with the Los Angeles Rams.
09:05Darrell Ryder joining us. He's our Browns Beat reporter. He's brought to us by Shive and Jewelers,
09:09Cleveland's premier jewelry store. So if Jared's wrecking practice, that means the offensive line
09:13didn't stop him. How's the offensive line with all the new additions coming together?
09:18Well, the offensive line is very limited in what they're allowed to do right now.
09:22There are no pads.
09:23There are no pads, and there's no hard hitting going on. And again, that's why it's hard to really
09:29evaluate line play. The running game right now, the running game looks pretty good too.
09:35But again, they're not in pads. They're not popping. So it's, you know, watch a run. You're
09:40like, okay, was that a three-yard loss? Was that a five-yard gain? Or did he just break that
09:44one
09:44to the house, right? It's really hard to grade those elements in practice right now.
09:52Well, Brailsford got a look at center yesterday. We've seen KT Leveston get a look at right guard,
10:00hat tip to Coach Riz. He has been pounding the table for that ball offseason to move KT Leveston
10:06outside inside. They are taking a look at that now. Four of the five players on the offensive
10:14line are set. Three of the positions on the offensive line are set. The questions are,
10:21you know, who's going to play right guard? Who's going to play center? I mean, they got
10:27to get that portion of things sorted out here. But, you know, we'll get to actual grades and
10:37that kind of stuff when it comes to the offensive line when we get into training camp the second
10:42week there, but they actually put on some pads.
10:45Darrell, what's your general overall feeling on Todd Bunkin so far and the way things,
10:50seem to be structured? Like, you've been through enough of these coaches that you,
10:54I've seen you and had conversations with you before going, man, I don't think that this doesn't
10:59look right. This doesn't, like, what's the feeling there with Bunkin?
11:03I like what he's doing. And look, I was a big time skeptic when they hired him. I don't,
11:08I don't hide from that. I don't shy away from it. I don't pretend that I love the hire when
11:12it was made. I was a skeptic. But watching how he's doing, conducting these practices and that,
11:18it's a little different than Kevin. And, you know, I like the fact that he, he'll rip the
11:26quarterbacks in the middle of practice. He'll rip the receivers in the middle of practice. And
11:30it's already happened in the mini camp here. Happened during OTA. He's not, he gets after
11:36his players. He has a standard that he expects from them out there. And he expects whatever they've
11:42gone over in the classroom to translate to the practice field. And if you're not going to do it
11:46right, then we're not going to do it all. We're going to restart and redo it until you get it
11:50right. And I really, I really respect that with, with Todd. In addition to the fact that, you know,
11:57he's pretty candid and, you know, pretty much where he stands on just about any subject outside of
12:05discussing player injuries. He might be candid, but does he have a voice? Can he be candid today
12:11in the one o'clock hour? Yeah. Uh, well, yeah. Speak of the devil. He's walking out right now.
12:18Yell at him. Hey, Todd, see if he can yell back.
12:21Voice check. Check one, two, three.
12:24Testing, testing. Exactly right. All right, buddy. Hey, Daryl, thank you very much. Great insight.
12:30Thanks, Daryl. You're back, guys.
12:31Daryl Ryder, our Browns beat reporter. He's out there at mandatory mini camp.
12:36Bye.
12:36Bye.
