00:00I've never mixed it up with this guy, and I'm not going to mix it up with him.
00:03At least I'm going to try not to.
00:07What?
00:09What?
00:10I mean, honestly, Ken, for everything that you've said the last two days about his Dylan
00:16Gabriel comments, and now you're going, I'm not going to mix it up.
00:18I didn't say I disrespected him as a person.
00:20Like, there's things that Lima say.
00:22You have a responsibility with your name on the show.
00:25To disrespect him as a person?
00:26I didn't say disrespect.
00:27You said mix it up, Ken.
00:29Oh, yeah.
00:31A little disrespected on text later.
00:34To his text face.
00:35Yeah, to his phone.
00:37Yeah.
00:37Talk a big game on the phone.
00:39I don't know if I want to do it, actually.
00:40Well, you mean on the phone.
00:42All right.
00:43Coach Ridd is going to join us right now on the Wise Heart Right.
00:45We make it right.
00:46Call Kyle Wright hotline.
00:47Hi, Coach.
00:48Good morning, gentlemen.
00:49Good morning.
00:51You drink it all?
00:54You know, I've had a beer.
00:56I had not.
00:57No, there was nothing altering my thoughts on what I said, though, which I know you were
01:04hoping.
01:04But no, I was clear in mind when I made that tweet.
01:08Damn, man.
01:09Because I was going to hope you had plenty of them before you fired off that Dylan Gabriel
01:12tweet.
01:12That was nuts.
01:13I had people reaching out to me yesterday for your phone number.
01:17I think people wanted to talk to you to do a wellness check.
01:21Well, I appreciate everybody looking out for me.
01:23That's very nice of everyone.
01:24So, what are you trying to tell us about this?
01:27Like, okay, I got the, like, there were people going, I can't believe.
01:32And you're always nice to people.
01:33And there were some nasty comments.
01:35And I was like, well, okay, Coach Lance is going to run towards coaching.
01:38He's going to try to coach them all up and find the bright spots out of any of them.
01:41You can only play with how many you got.
01:43So, you're going to find it.
01:44And I do appreciate that.
01:45Admire that, Coach.
01:46I do mean that.
01:47Now that I'm done kissing ass, let's tell it how it is.
01:51You can't have a season.
01:52You can't go into a season with Dylan Gabriel as a starting quarterback.
01:54Coach, what the hell's going on over there?
01:56Well, I will say this.
01:57First and foremost, I've made it very clear that I think Deshaun Watson and Shodor Sanders
02:03have kind of moved themselves in front.
02:06I thought they had some pretty good summers in terms of improving themselves.
02:11The point, that's a lot different than saying Dylan Gabriel has no chance.
02:15For me, when I say a player has no chance, I don't care what level it is, you're done
02:22evaluating them because you have confirmation bias.
02:25And if you go to a practice and you watch Dylan Gabriel, whatever quarterback position
02:30you want to pick, but let's just stay with Dylan Gabriel, if you have confirmation bias
02:35as a coach, as a person, then you're going to get what you want at some point in that
02:40practice.
02:40And I don't work that way.
02:42So, when I look at Dylan Gabriel, I want to see what he can do.
02:45I want to continue to coach him.
02:47I want to see what he can do in this new offense.
02:49And really, the point of the tweet was to say, I think the other two guys are in front.
02:54There's no question about it.
02:55But say this guy has no chance to even compete before the pads go on.
03:00In a new offense, with a new head coach, with a new offensive coordinator, just doesn't
03:05make a lot of sense to me.
03:06And for me, I want to evaluate every player on the roster.
03:09If you're a team looking to win, then I'm not going to pass on a guy because of what
03:13happened before.
03:14I don't care that Deshaun Watson hasn't been good in six years.
03:17I don't care that Shador Sanders only has seven starts.
03:20I'm trying to evaluate everybody to give this team a chance to win.
03:25And if you don't do that, you're not doing your job as a coach.
03:29That was kind of the point of the tweet, that you can't write people off because then you
03:33don't evaluate them anymore.
03:35Well, let me ask you, when Dylan Gabriel was coming out, did you have any kind of a grade
03:40on him?
03:41I don't know what the coach Riz evaluations look like.
03:44I know everybody gives grades now.
03:46First round grade, second round grade.
03:47Did you do anything of the sort for Dylan Gabriel?
03:50Oh yeah, I had a, you know, I was actually, as you, as I made the tweet, I have had
03:55some
03:56very poignant comments of my thoughts on Dylan Gabriel, which I thought was pretty funny.
04:00But when he came out, I thought he was a system quarterback and everybody thinks of
04:04a system quarterback or a quarterback that manages the game as a bad thing.
04:08That couldn't be any more than the truth.
04:10If you're in a system offense, that means a Kevin Stefanski where there's a lot to it,
04:15but it simply said, when the play is called, you run the play.
04:17There's not a lot of varying off it.
04:20That's where he was very good.
04:21So he's good on the run.
04:22He's good.
04:23He's a smart guy.
04:24So he can get you in the right run game on first down, underneath center, wide, wide
04:29zone, boot off the wide zone, levels concept.
04:31And then you get into these big format, these big personnel groups where you spread people
04:35out and you have to make quick decisions.
04:37Now, that being said, he didn't do it last year.
04:40The things that he does very, very well, getting the ball out, being on time, taking,
04:44managing the game.
04:45That means when you manage a football game, that means you take advantage of vertical
04:49shots when you're there.
04:50He did not do that.
04:51He did not take advantage of those vertical chances.
04:54When people say he's a check down Charlie, that's a good thing.
04:56If the vertical concepts aren't there, then you check it down.
04:59But he was just doing that before, you know, before the vertical was there and he was missing
05:04it.
05:04So all those things tie into it.
05:06But the idea of what he meant to a Kevin Stefanski offense, I thought it was a very good
05:11pick.
05:11You're talking about what fits my scheme.
05:13This is a guy who can throw well on the run.
05:15He throws well from different platforms.
05:19Did it at Oklahoma.
05:20Did it at Oregon.
05:22Did it at Central Florida.
05:23Threw for 18,000 yards.
05:25155 touchdowns.
05:26In a system offense, there are some limitations.
05:29And once again, this is not about him being a star.
05:31This is about him having absolutely no chance when the two guys in front of him have a lot
05:35of questions as well.
05:36And for me, that's where the tweet originated.
05:40And that's, you know, the evaluation is what it is.
05:43And, you know, when you talk about, like, credibility and things like that, well, the
05:46quarterback position is hard to kind of gauge.
05:49And it's hard to make sure that your evaluation is correct.
05:53But you stick by your evaluation and what you see.
05:55And what I saw was a guy that fit that offense very well.
05:59Now, this offense is going to be very different.
06:00But I'm not counting him out before they've done anything.
06:03I'm not having that, well, he stinks.
06:06I don't work in the stinks category ever.
06:09You try to do what we do for a living, Coach Riz.
06:13And you'll see how quickly those words flow right out of your mouth.
06:18I understand that.
06:19I understand that for sure.
06:20Well, and that's the thing.
06:21I totally get that.
06:22And the idea of him being a starter, that makes sense.
06:25I don't know if he can be a starter.
06:27But when you only have a 53-man roster and you need, you know, one of the things I said
06:32about Taylor Greene, one of the values he brings is being a scout team quarterback who can run
06:37and throw.
06:38That's valuable to a defense.
06:40And, you know, I don't know if everybody sees that.
06:42But once again, the big thing is I'm not counting anybody out because I want my evaluation to
06:47be play-to-play and watch the entire practice.
06:51I don't want to say, you know, he's going to throw a bad ball.
06:53Now I want everybody to go, you know, oh, he can't do it.
06:56See, he can't play in the NFL.
06:57Why?
06:58Because he threw a bad ball?
06:58Because Carson Schlesinger made a good play?
07:00No, watch the entire practice.
07:02It still might come that he can't play.
07:04But that's not coming with, like, eyes that already thinks he stinks.
07:08That's just not how I work.
07:09So I'm just going to put words in your mouth.
07:11Actually, I'm going to ask you.
07:12So you don't care about completion percentages during training camp and touchdowns thrown
07:17during training camp, right?
07:19Oh, absolutely not.
07:20I couldn't be, and I don't mind saying this.
07:22I don't think, if you don't have context within a practice, completions during a practice
07:27absolutely mean nothing to me.
07:29What is the defense doing?
07:30What is the drill?
07:31I remember last year, there was a couple times where they were working Hail Marys at
07:35the end of the camp.
07:37Well, those are going on your completion percentage.
07:39And as coaches, we go, make sure you throw the ball up.
07:42There's no time left on the clock.
07:44Are you working in the red zone?
07:46Are the plays scripted?
07:47Does the defense know what you're running?
07:49These things all happen in football.
07:51So without context, that means absolutely nothing.
07:53Um, because first of all, quarterbacks aren't getting hit in practice.
07:57Secondly, we don't know anything about the drill or what's going on.
08:00So yeah, I'm not a, uh, you know, I think it's a, you can use it because it is a
08:04product
08:05based league, but to use it as like, who's in, who's in front.
08:08That's absolutely wrong.
08:09In my opinion.
08:10What do you think about QBR coach?
08:14Well, once again, I'm a big believer in making plays when they're presented to you.
08:17So when you think about, when you think about what a quarterback does, obviously there's
08:21only very, there's very few guys you can win because of, there's lots of guys you can win
08:25with.
08:25And those guys you win with have to make the key third down and four run.
08:29They have to get you into the right run play on first down to get you to the second, uh,
08:33second and four.
08:34Then you can take a play action shot.
08:35They have to be able to make the throws when they're presented to them down the seam.
08:39They have to make sure that they're protecting the football, not turning the ball over, you
08:44know, a punt in the NFL at any level of football is not a bad thing.
08:47When you have a really elite defense that's playing complimentary football, you know,
08:51there's a lot that goes into QBR, but once again, stats are, um, stats are overrated.
08:56One of the most worst things you can do in terms of winning.
09:00Sometimes you got to make the plays when they're presented to you.
09:03And sometimes that means a fourth down and one, you make a, you make a great run check
09:08that gets you away from an overhang.
09:10No one knows that, but that's what wins football games.
09:13And sometimes stats don't tell you that it's just like pressures with, I will take
09:17a ton of pressures before I take sacks.
09:19I want that quarterback off, uh, off his platform.
09:22I don't want him to, you know, have comfort in there.
09:24It's the same thing with playing quarterback, make plays when they're presented to you.
09:28And sometimes those don't show up in stats, but if you win the game, it doesn't matter.
09:32Does it matter to you?
09:34And do you think it matters to Todd Munkin to have a quarterback competition?
09:38And then outside of the two that are competing, the other quarterback happens to be left-handed
09:44while the other two are right-handed.
09:46Does that mean anything to you?
09:48Absolutely.
09:48You know, it's funny.
09:49I've had a bunch of questions.
09:50You have to change the entire offense.
09:52That's not really the case.
09:53These NFL, these NFL offenses are so complex.
09:56They're working full, full, uh, full, full, full field reads.
10:00And, you know, what are you protecting your backside?
10:02I will tell you as a quarterback, getting hit, uh, blindsided in the front underneath the
10:06chin, uh, hurts a lot worse than getting hit in the back.
10:08Cause you don't even know those are coming.
10:10But a lot of that has to do with like how offenses used to be run.
10:14You're picking one side.
10:15If you're right-handed, you're more working to the right side, left-handed to the left.
10:19That's not really the case.
10:20These guys are working full field.
10:21So they have to be able to see everything.
10:23They have to be able to move their feet.
10:24Uh, I think that's really, uh, kind of an overrated thing at this point, this spin and all that
10:30kind of stuff.
10:30That's not a huge deal.
10:32Um, for me as a quarterback, the thing that bothers the quarterback the most is A and B
10:36gap pressure in your face.
10:38And that's what throws these guys off, not where they're working, not the hand they throw
10:42with.
10:42Uh, if you want to disrupt the guy, even the guys on the edge, you can step up A and
10:46B
10:46gap pressure is what really hurts these, uh, quarterbacks at all level.
10:51Really not, you know, tell not the, the hand they throw with.
10:54Uh, we got coach Riz joining us on the show, Lance Rizlin.
10:57He's on the wise heart, right?
10:58We make a right called Kyle Wright hotline.
10:59All right.
11:00Jerry Judy.
11:00We've heard differing things this week.
11:02Now I'm going to ask Lyman about this coming up here in a bit.
11:05Let me ask you though, his over-unders are set 50 and a half receptions for 2026, 50.5,
11:1250 and a half is, Oh, does Jerry Judy get over or under 50 and a half catches in 2026?
11:20Well, I'm not going to give you the answer you want.
11:22I'm going to say it doesn't matter to me.
11:24He can have 30 catches.
11:25Oh, come on coach.
11:26Listen, he can have, he, if he has 35 catches, but you have balance on offense, the, the,
11:32I don't care how many catches Jerry Judy has.
11:34Do they have balance?
11:35Do they have three receivers?
11:36If they're an 11 personnel, do they have three receivers that can make plays?
11:40Harold Fanning gets matched up against the linebacker and a safety.
11:43Then that doesn't like it.
11:45And they go nickel and they take a linebacker out.
11:47And can you run the ball with Judkins?
11:48For me, it's not about stats.
11:50It's not about how many catches he gets.
11:51Does he make the play when it's there presented to him?
11:54When he doesn't get that, you know, let's say Boston's hot and he gets the double coverage
11:58and he gets the number one corner.
12:00Can he shine?
12:01Not even in that game, but on that particular play.
12:04Cause in this Monk and offense, what you have the ability to do is that if Jerry Judy gets
12:08a matchup, he wants, you can check to it and get him the ball when it's presented to him.
12:13That's the difference between a player offense and a system offense.
12:16So for me, it's not, it's not about the number it's the impact.
12:19And does he clear the, does he clear it out to make sure that the under route comes up?
12:23There's so many things that, you know, here's the thing about playing receiver.
12:26You're not a pass catcher.
12:27That's not your job.
12:28You're a receiver.
12:29That means you have to block.
12:31That means you have to open things up.
12:32That means you have to consistently do what you're supposed to do.
12:35Pass catching is a part of it, but you're not a pass catcher.
12:38This isn't seven on seven.
12:39You have a lot of other rules.
12:40So for me, I'm looking for impact.
12:42If you say, is he going to have 30 impact catches?
12:45Yes.
12:45I think he's going to have 30 plus impact catches.
12:48All right.
12:48Fine.
12:49Coach, we thank you very much for the time.
12:51We appreciate it.
12:53You've given us something to think about when, well, has he given us something to think about
12:56when it comes to Dylan Gabriel?
12:58Uh, you can be honest.
13:02I thought he had to buy it, boy.
13:03Here's the thing.
13:04Confirmation bias.
13:05If you think he stinks, then you're going to get those plays.
13:08Don't do that.
13:09Watch the plays.
13:09If he stinks, he stinks.
13:10You see, he's thinking it.
13:12That's the way you analyze it.
13:14That's what he's doing.
13:15He's too open-minded.
13:16You have no place.
13:17We got to close your mind on this show for open-minded.
13:19I need more Frank Cush out of you, man.
13:22Okay.
13:22Close that up.
13:23Let's go.
13:24More narrow-minded.
13:26Okay.
13:26Yeah.
13:27Thank you very much.
13:28Coach Lance Rislin.
13:29Find him on Twitter.
13:30Talk soon, guys.
13:30Talk soon.
13:31Thank you, Coach.
13:33Lance Rislin on Twitter.
13:34You can find him there.
13:35He's also on Cleveland.com.
13:36You hear him on the fan all the time.
13:37He's absolutely wonderful.
13:38We're looking forward to football season with him.
13:40And, of course, he's on the Wise Heart Right.
13:41We make a right call.
13:42Kyle Right.
13:42He's on the Wise Heart Right.
13:42He's on the Wise Heart Right.
13:42He's on the Wise Heart Right.
13:42He's on the Wise Heart Right.
