00:00we head out to the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline and welcome on
00:04Nathan Zagura Browns analyst Nathan how you doing bud well I think I've been better certainly as
00:13it relates to the topic at hand that was uh not the debut for the Todd Munkineer certainly that
00:18anybody was looking for down Jacksonville yesterday but I'm happy to be with you guys
00:21dude well we're happy to have you did you at least enjoy all the other time outside of one
00:27to four in Jacksonville like are you just really pro going and visiting Jacksonville was that at
00:31least fun no I am not pro visiting Jacksonville I don't think I don't think that's one of the ones
00:37that's on a lot of people's destinations now if you went out to like Pontevedra where you got you know
00:42PPC of Sawgrass sure that'd be that'd be a little bit more interesting but no a tough trip tough way
00:47to open the season and certainly not good enough as Todd Munkin said on on either side of the ball
00:52their um offensive or defense in that game against Jacksonville yeah Todd did stress today that he
00:57thought there was some really good signs with Deshaun Watson how did you see Deshaun's first
01:02game in a Browns uniform this season well you know the first half first three quarters it just wasn't
01:09good enough the Jags scored on six of their seven possessions the Browns certainly did not at one
01:12point you know it's 31 nothing you get a field goal and you get the touchdown late the numbers
01:16certainly look a lot better than it felt watching the game 16 to 22 205 yards 9.3 an attempt
01:22to
01:22touchdown a pick now the Browns did get more than half of their yards on those final two drives in
01:27the fourth quarter so you got to take that all with a grain of salt I thought at times and
01:32especially
01:32kind of late I thought it started off pretty good the first four plays look good and then obviously
01:36that interception um you know you get a breakdown on the line they don't pick up the blitz Quinchon has
01:41to go pick up the blitz and so the play action fake to kind of pull the linebacker you're supposed
01:45to
01:45kind of come to the right first pull that linebacker over come back to the left the timing thrown off
01:50and
01:50he throws it throws the interception and then really it was a struggle for the offense after
01:54that I still think you know in the ground game you got to get Quinchon Jenkins more room you really
01:58couldn't get him to the line of scrimmage without contact felt eerily similar to last year where he's
02:02over two yards of contact but isn't getting a yard down the field before taking contact um I liked
02:08what I saw from Deshaun with his legs the six runs for 38 yards you don't want him to be
02:11your leading
02:11rusher and then I'm going to choose to take encouragement from the end and you know the touchdown
02:16to Denzel Boston that was still on Buster Brown their number one corner that was a great throw
02:20to Denzel Boston I thought there was a deep over to Casey Concepcion where he ripped it it was a
02:25very good throw there was a comebacker to Boston that was a very good throw so hopefully he can
02:30build on that obviously you know through the first three quarters it just wasn't good enough the
02:33Browns were not able to put together any type of sustained possessions they were not able to
02:37convert on third downs they weren't able to stress the defense they had of the sticks and then
02:41the other part was the operational stuff that has got to get cleaned up and that's one of the
02:46reasons you know that Deshaun I think got this job and then to see the penalties I think the Browns
02:51had 11 of them this game the majority on offense he had one where there were offensive penalties in
02:56three straight plays and four out of five you can't have a delay a game for example on third and
03:00two from
03:01the opponent's three when you're just trying to get a touchdown and you know get back into it or at
03:06least feel good about what you've accomplished there um so overall not good enough I'm sure Deshaun
03:11would be the first one to say that but there were some nice throws I thought he did a good
03:15job with
03:15his legs for the most part but it's it's got to be better it's got to be better all around
03:19on offense and certainly to me on defense you know Todd Munkin said today that he really didn't
03:25hesitate to start uh Deshaun against Tampa Bay and that's what he's anticipating going forward
03:32and then he talked about you know it's only a couple weeks now that Deshaun's been practicing
03:37getting all the reps with the ones there and so I guess you know from my standpoint as somebody who
03:43I am a massive doubter of this plan I I would not have chosen in any circumstance to see Deshaun
03:50again
03:50I just I think my question is when can we reasonably expect quality play from Deshaun Watson
03:57well I think it's going to have to come soon or if you know you're going to have to evaluate
04:02that
04:03position and I think you evaluate the most important position in all sports it's the most important
04:06position for the Cleveland Browns and so it has to come suit so I think that Deshaun Watson if I'm
04:12Deshaun I want to make sure I go and play really well against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday
04:17and lead this team to a victory because I think there are going to be a lot of evaluations you'll
04:21be coming home after that so I think there's a lot to kind of factor into it so if I'm
04:26Deshaun I think
04:26it's got to be now it's got to be now uh what happened with the the the run game everyone
04:31believes
04:31in Quinchon obviously we just didn't have it going yesterday I actually didn't think the offensive line
04:35was that bad in in in trying to not only pass protection but also run protection too uh what'd
04:40you make a Quinchon just not being able to get anything going well it's hard when you're in
04:44such a negative game strip to get it going what I'm troubled by is the fact that as I said
04:50he
04:50didn't even get a yard downfield before taking contact on average and you're running into light
04:55boxes these were not stacked boxes this was you know I was talking with Joe Thomas about in 2014
05:00my first game on the sidelines we were in Pittsburgh in the second half we ran ourselves back into that
05:05game against their light boxes when Kyle Shannon was the OC Isaiah Crowell was running that game
05:10we should have been able to run the ball in some of those looks and we did not so I
05:14think the
05:14offensive line's got to do a better job I also me personally I'd love to see Quinchon Judkins out there
05:20on third downs more often because I thought the best play he had in the game was where he took
05:24the
05:24swing pass made a guy miss and then picked up 16 yards you say yourself okay let's get him in
05:30space
05:30a little more get him in the screen game but the Browns have got to figure out a way to
05:33be able to
05:33move the point of attack more than I think they did in that game early in Jacksonville Nathan looking to
05:40the offensive line I echo what JP said I thought there were for for five new guys in that offensive
05:46line
05:47I was surprised how many good moments I actually saw and I thought there were you know obviously
05:52there were the the holding calls a couple other things I was a little surprised for that first
05:57time there what did you see from the offensive line I think that they were they were solid I think
06:04that there were opportunities obviously to make plays there were some things they've got to get
06:07better on right I think that you know Austin Barber continues to be maybe a real gem and a find
06:13I
06:13thought he could make the case that he was our best offensive lineman out there in this game against
06:17Jacksonville so it was good I think George Warhop should get a lot of credit he's one of the best
06:21offensive line coaches and certainly the best that we've had since Bill Callahan was here and then
06:25hopefully he can get those guys you know going up front listen this is the one thing that I'll say
06:31and it's not an excuse at all this team for rookies starting on offense it's a quarterback who hadn't
06:37played in two years it's an entirely new offensive line really the only guys who were starters last year
06:41that were starters in this game were Jerry Judy Harold Fannin and Quinn Sean Judkins so I'm not
06:46surprised that it was a little slower on offense I'm encouraged by what I saw from this offensive
06:50line and I do think this offense is going to get better Tom Munkin has been very good with offenses
06:54everywhere he has been so I do believe we will be better on offense I was actually a little bit
06:59more
06:59concerned about what happened on defense where we were dissected you know pretty thoroughly by Trevor
07:04Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jags that to me was a little bit more of a surprise and I know how
07:08well
07:08Lawrence played down the stretch last year might have been the best quarterback in the NFL
07:11over the final eight games but I thought we were going to have better answers than we did
07:16for the Jags and they scored on six of their first seven possessions and you know if they wanted to
07:21keep it going I think they would have been able to put some more points on the board as well
07:23was it the
07:24lack of pressure was it like a dealer's choice there's a lot you can you can pick on here but
07:28defensively there wasn't enough pressure yeah wasn't enough pressure we played you know 67 percent zone
07:35which is certainly higher and a little bit of a deviation from what we've seen in the past
07:40in the recent past obviously with the Cleveland Browns and not play a lot of man I think maybe
07:44we were trying to throw a little bit of a curveball at the Jags something that they might not have
07:47expected and unfortunately it did not go our way and I think pressure obviously that's where it all
07:52starts and the Browns did not have enough pressure I think the Jags had 27 pressures in this game
07:5814 from their two starting edge rushers the Browns conversely had I think 10 pressures in this game
08:03and just one from their two starting edge rushers and so when you can't get home with four it's hard
08:07to play zone behind it also if you can't get home with four you got a blitz and the Browns
08:12in this game
08:13were pretty conservative from a blitz standpoint because I think they believed they could get home
08:16this was a a line that the Browns felt like I think that they were going to be able to
08:21have a more
08:22of an advantage against and that is not how it played out and so they were able to take advantage
08:27of that Nathan we had coach Lance Reisland on at 340 today and he talked about the defensive line
08:34how it looked like they got manhandled and he said something I think makes a lot a lot of sense
08:38knowing what I know of the wide nine and he said it could be an alignment issue walk us through
08:44the
08:44importance of of alignment in you know after what now four years I guess three years of watching the
08:50wide nine with Jim Schwartz and how that could have been part of the issue on Sunday
08:57when you're in that situation then I'll just speak for what Jared first said afterwards and
09:01Jared verse you know was chipped I think on a third of his pass rushes which is a higher rate
09:05than he experienced out there in in LA and when you're kind of in those situations in the wide nine
09:11your pass rush has to come from guys with speed getting around the edge or being able to do some
09:16of those crazy moves that miles would do right and on the interior you've got to be able to win
09:20I
09:20thought Mason Graham certainly was an encouraging spot in this game Mike Hall had a couple of nice
09:25pass rushes from the inside it was good to see Malik Collins back but when you're out there and teams
09:29can put that tight end over you or they can have the running back on that side chip you it's
09:35it's going
09:35to be an adjustment I think a little bit for Jared burst so perhaps from an alignment standpoint if that's
09:38what you're referring to being out that wide is different now Jared burst was in a five man front a
09:44three four where he was kind of a stand-up guy with the Rams so he's used to being out
09:48there but he
09:48was not being chipped or attacked in the same manner because it was a five man front as he is
09:53now with the Cleveland Browns all right it's you know it's interesting just trying to think about
09:57what you can actually take away from week one week one is always such a mixed bag of sorts look
10:01across
10:02the league there's always so many different uh teams that have problems that don't consistently
10:05have problems etc what do you think is real from this game that Browns fans can take away good or
10:10bad
10:11that you think will stay with us over the next couple weeks well certainly bad I hope none of
10:16that is real right because that wouldn't be very fun so I think from a good standpoint I think Mason
10:20Graham has taken a nice leap forward in year number two that's positive I thought our special teams
10:24were look significantly better not only in terms of our coverages which I thought were very good
10:31but in terms of our return game I mean we had three different guys had a kick return of over
10:3730 34 or
10:38more yards I was very impressed by that we averaged 38 yards a kick return that was great I thought
10:43that you know Andre Schmidt when he was called upon did what he needed to do Corey Bohorkas punted the
10:47ball very effectively as well um so I thought special teams was a bright spot that was something that
10:53last year was a huge Achilles heel for the Cleveland Browns so that Brian Storrs tenure as a special
10:59teams coordinator off to a very good start I liked what I saw from our young offensive lineman Spencer
11:03Fano and Austin Barber I absolutely am of the belief that Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston are
11:08very much real legit NFL wide receivers so that was encouraging to me as well defensively I think
11:15we've got to get better I think that we've got to be you know more on the same page in
11:19terms of if
11:20we're playing some of those zones we had a couple of breakdowns if we're playing man-to-man we've got
11:24to make sure for example on the touchdown to Parker Washington that Miles Harden if you're going to get up
11:28close on you got to get a jam and a reroute you can't give up the outside in a single
11:33high look
11:33with a robber because your help is all to the inside so you have to have that outside leverage
11:37force him back to the inside so there are things that I think the Browns did well in this game
11:42obviously it was not enough um and I'm hopeful that you can build on those things and correct but
11:47I think the thing to be most encouraged about your four rookies on offense Barber Fano Boston
11:51Concepcion looks the part and I think are are on their way to being very successful players and
11:57starters for the Cleveland Browns all right Nathan we already know that Deshaun will be starting
12:01against Tampa Bay this Sunday down yonder in Florida uh give me one or two of the most important
12:07things for him to clear up for this offense to look better on Sunday well first we can't have those
12:14pre-snap issues it's hard enough you know to get 10 yards in the NFL you can't make it 15
12:19you can't
12:20make it 20 you can't have delays of game in the red zone so clean those things up and then
12:24the other
12:24is just you got to just rip it you got to trust it and and when you see it you
12:28got to let it go
12:29you have to be able to throw with some anticipation especially against those teams now in this game
12:33in particular what's going to be a big departure from what we saw in Jacksonville where they were
12:37able to get home with four play seven in coverage behind it play those zones Todd Bowles is going to
12:42blitz I think he could blitz on more than half the pass plays in this game so that is going
12:47to be huge
12:48how Deshaun Watson handles that blitz got to get the ball out quick and when the shots are available
12:52they're going to play a little bit more risky coverage you've got to hit those ones down the
12:55field and hopefully that big throw to Boston helps them build on that from a vertical standpoint
12:59Nathan great stuff uh unfortunate that we have to start the uh the football season off talking
13:04about that game but hopefully it's just one game and next week we're talking about a Browns dub
13:09yes I certainly would like that it'd be fun for all of us thank you guys all right buddy
13:13Nathan Segura there Browns analyst on the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline
13:18thank you
