00:00The Camden-Brown game, 17-7. Cowboys get the preseason victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
00:09Their first win in a preseason opener since the Hall of Fame game in 2017 when they beat the Arizona
00:15Cardinals 20-18.
00:18And after the opening drive, where Seattle went down the field aided by a couple of penalties,
00:23that Cowboy defense was some big stops to force turnovers on downs in the fourth quarter.
00:30The reserve offensive line playing pretty well on this one.
00:33A lot to unpack.
00:35Zach Wolchuk alongside the Super Bowl winning scout, Brian Brontis,
00:38the official postgame show of your Dallas Cowboys.
00:42877-881-1053.
00:43Always the number to call and the number to text.
00:46That's 877-881-1053.
00:49We'll be rocking with you for the next couple hours.
00:52Brian, your initial takeaways from this one tonight.
00:54I thought Dallas' twos and threes were better than what Seattle's twos and threes were in this football game.
00:59You know, the starters for both teams were out, and then you kind of had to follow along from there.
01:05The game was played with backups throughout.
01:07There were certain guys that were sprinkled in that will eventually be starters for the Cowboys.
01:13But if you look at the very first drive of the game, though, the thing, the peeling with Carson
01:18and the problems that he was having, you know, you're off the field if you don't get the call on
01:24that.
01:24And so, you know, that would have been nice.
01:27I think Dallas overall, though, I think that if you look at there were some questions about the backup offensive
01:32line going in.
01:33For the most part, for both quarterbacks, we were worried about would these quarterbacks be able to have a fair
01:39evaluation?
01:40I think you got a fair evaluation from both quarterbacks.
01:43I think some wide receivers showed up.
01:45You ran the football effectively at times.
01:48You know, there were some things you could probably work on clearly better.
01:52You know, a guy like Shelton getting his first opportunity.
01:56They had a little bit of a game plan to kind of try and help him when they could, keeping
02:00tight ends in, you know, chipping backs.
02:04So, listen, they talk about not scheming for preseason games and stuff.
02:08I think that Brian Schottenheimer schemed a little bit, knowing that maybe his offensive line might struggle a little bit.
02:13But overall, though, I think the defense, when you look at what the pass rush, the middle of the defense,
02:18what they were able to do.
02:19I think some linebackers showed up, you know, right before the end of the half, what Maris Leofau and then
02:24also Houston were able to do.
02:27Yeah, I think overall you have to be very pleased with the way that that thing came out.
02:33Now, I'll say this about the special teams.
02:37You know, this is where tomorrow we'll get up and watch the tape.
02:40And I guarantee you there will not be many starters that are playing these special teams.
02:44There are guys playing these special teams that will likely not be on your football team or will be on
02:50a practice squad.
02:51So, you know, that's the fight of it.
02:54That's, okay, how do I get Brown, you know, who is like on the, like catches a touchdown and then
03:04the next thing he's playing R3.
03:06Sure.
03:06Covering a kick.
03:07Right.
03:07You know, that's what you have to do.
03:10That's how you have to kind of figure these things out.
03:12And so, you know, you will throw guys in positions that they practice some of these things.
03:19They practice as twos and threes.
03:22But then all of a sudden the game gets going and they don't play very well.
03:27And then they find themselves not on the team, on the practice squad, or never doing that again.
03:31Yep.
03:32So, you have to keep that in mind when you, but, you know, it's for overall, though, I think that's
03:39the only thing that you could say tonight was not a positive for the Cowboys.
03:44I think everything else was pretty much a positive.
03:46And, you know, we'll see what happens with the injuries.
03:48There's maybe some injuries we don't know about.
03:50But overall, I didn't see Britt Brown or Jim Mauer or Dr. Cooper running out on the field for anybody.
03:55So, that's a good sign.
03:56Yeah, the only one that we do know is Phil Moff.
03:58Phil Moff in the chest.
03:59The chest, right.
04:00Otherwise, everybody was getting up.
04:02And that's what you want in a preseason game.
04:04But I couldn't agree more.
04:06I think certainly when you're watching this, the coverage and the return units on special teams, that was certainly the
04:11one area that you circle and say.
04:13But it's a lot of young guys, a lot of guys that might not be playing.
04:16I don't think, yeah.
04:18That's the thing you have to look at is tomorrow when you sit down and watch the tape, you look
04:22at it and you go,
04:23Okay, who is playing this position?
04:25Is there any guys that are actually going to make team or be starter that's playing on this punt team?
04:32Is the guy a personal protector?
04:33Is he a gunner?
04:35You know, those are the things you have to look at because there's a lot of guys that they're trying
04:40to find spot.
04:41When, like, all your starters on the offense and defensive side of the ball don't dress, now you've got to
04:47figure out, okay, who are the starters?
04:49And, you know, I mentioned that.
04:51Brown catches a touchdown.
04:53His first touchdown catch, beautiful catch.
04:55Gorgeous.
04:56Should be over there taking in a cup of Gatorade and taking a pat on the back.
05:01Except that he's, no, no, you've got to go out there now and cover kicks.
05:04So that's kind of where the special teams unit is in the special.
05:09And the fact that, you know, Aubrey and the punter and all that, those are the things that you kind
05:14of look at and you go,
05:15Okay, those things were successful tonight and that's the plus you look for.
05:1917-7 Cowboys win over Seattle.
05:23Pepsi.
05:23Football is back, baby.
05:25It is the Pepsi Post Game Show.
05:26Gosh, it's so good to have Pepsi and football back in our lives and tailgating deserves a Pepsi.
05:31I hope you enjoyed this one tonight as we're hanging out with you here for the next couple of hours.
05:36877-881-1053.
05:39The 859, just get the apology to Malik Davis out of the way first, guys.
05:44And I will say, look, Malik Davis is pretty accustomed to this.
05:47Coming out, playing well in preseason games.
05:49He has always, for whatever reason, seems like he's the forgotten guy buried on the depth chart and he just
05:55won't go away.
05:55He is a break glass in the case of emergency guy.
05:58He comes off the couch.
06:01He's a good football player.
06:02That's what, you know, when you hand him the football, but it seems like that the front office coaching staff,
06:08they've always kind of done this with him where they've just, you know, when they needed him to play,
06:13they bring him in and he has four or five carries.
06:16He gets 45, 50 yards and then they put him back and somebody else, we end up talking about a
06:21Bannacanda.
06:22We talk about, you know, Moffa, Blue, we talk about all these guys.
06:27Yeah, there's a place, there's always a place for a guy like, you know, and that's where you have to
06:33watch him on special teams.
06:35And I've seen him as a personal protector.
06:37You know, I've seen him, like, play some special teams where I'm like, okay, he's not a liability doing that.
06:43But yeah, there's no apology.
06:46I mean, he is a good football player.
06:48When they hand him the ball, he does things, but they obviously have an understanding.
06:54The people that should be apologizing, the people you should reach out to are Will McClay and the scouts
07:00and everybody else that, you know, coaches that player.
07:03Because you can see the guy's a good football player.
07:06They don't always think that.
07:08They think like, well, let's look at this guy.
07:10Well, let's look at this guy.
07:12You know, they're the ones that are making the decisions about him, not us here in the radio world.
07:17Yeah, 7 for 39, you're leading a rush for Malik Davis, averaging over 5.5 yards a carry.
07:22My Malik Davis theory is, I wonder, the durability.
07:28That's my one, because the one game that he starts and he gets a ton of the carries was Washington.
07:33And then he's unavailable the next week.
07:35And I wonder if, because any time he gets his chances, Malik Davis performs.
07:38But I just wonder physically over the course of a 17-game season, if he were to be your running
07:43back too,
07:44will availability end up being a concern?
07:46Oh, absolutely.
07:48I mean, he is such a tough guy.
07:50But, you know, he's one of the guys, too, that maybe is good in spurts.
07:54Maybe he's a guy that's like that, you know, the third down back.
07:58Because the fact that he plays as a personal player.
08:00Every one of these backs will tell you, it's not about carries and it's not about catching.
08:06Every one of these backs know they have to block.
08:09That's the thing.
08:10You ask a running back, well, hey, what do you need to do?
08:13I need to work on my block.
08:13They don't ever talk about, like, vision and, you know, they never talk about any of that stuff.
08:20Or, like, hitting the hole.
08:22They talk about, I know I can play if I can block.
08:26That's where every one of these running backs for the Cowboys are right now.
08:29Yeah.
08:30And that's why Williams starts.
08:31Javante Williams might have been the best back in football last year.
08:35Absolutely.
08:35As a pass protector.
08:36Yeah.
08:37If you go around the league and say, well, wow, that guy at Atlanta, he's a great back.
08:43Hell yeah, he's a great back.
08:44But let's watch.
08:45Does he pass block?
08:46Does he care?
08:47We see these guys do things that are positive.
08:53And, like, Malik Davis does a lot of positive things.
08:57Yeah, he does.
08:58He does.
08:58And I do wonder, are they still hunting running backs?
09:03You know, that's something that I do think they've had their eye on some guys.
09:07And we'll see with Mafa and Blue.
09:08I thought the screen from, really, the screen game tonight in general was a standout.
09:13I mean, whether it was the Anthony Smith screen or you saw some stuff late in the football game in
09:18the fourth quarter.
09:18But Jaden Blue, probably his best play of the night, was getting out in space on that screen.
09:23And the execution of it, the timing.
09:25I mean, there's so many elements to a good screen game.
09:28That's an area the Cowboys have struggled.
09:29Tonight, that was working.
09:31They work on the screen game.
09:33When I was out there for the first week and then you guys came the second week,
09:38every first period of practice there was play action, runs, play action, run, screen.
09:47Play action, screen.
09:48And, you know, it was a constant.
09:51And we did.
09:52We had a chance to talk to Clayton Adams that one day and I brought it up.
09:56And he really didn't want to get into it because he's like, oh, damn, you caught us.
10:01You caught us.
10:02You saw that?
10:02And he admitted, he goes, we were not a good screen team.
10:07And a lot of it had to do with maybe he had offensive linemen that just weren't able to get
10:12out
10:12and get in front of the screen.
10:14Or you had backs that didn't have the feel for how to set and then how to release and be
10:19in the right spot.
10:20Yeah.
10:21Man, what a nugget.
10:22Bobby Belter.
10:23Bobby Belter.
10:24That was a good one.
10:25That was a good one.
10:25Cowboys had 19, 19 missed tackles in last year's preseason opener.
10:30Per NextGenStats, the Cowboys had zero missed tackles tonight.
10:35Yeah.
10:35And you notice it from the secondary.
10:38I mean, Reddy Stewart, Julius Wood came in, made some really nice tackles in the fourth quarter.
10:43Carson, early in the game, even though he had the penalties and stuff, he was very aggressive coming forward and
10:48making tackles.
10:49Yes, he was.
10:50Absolutely.
10:50I mean, I thought that from the corners, filling the linebackers, they did an excellent job.
10:55And some of the blitzes you mentioned that CP was doing to get off the field,
10:59some big-time stops by the defense that you can feel good about moving into week two of the preseason.
11:05877-881-1053, the number to call, the number to text.
11:10And we do have, I mean, my gosh, Joe Milton from the 2-5-1 with the Joe Milton love.
11:16I thought both quarterbacks were really impressive.
11:19I thought both were really good today.
11:21And I felt like maybe there was a little game planning with some of the things that they were able
11:25to do.
11:26But you look at the way that they attacked the middle of the defense, the crossing routes, the digs,
11:31the deep routes that they were able to run.
11:35And, you know, give a guy like Camden Brown, give all these receivers some credit for the way that they
11:40were able to go and make some plays.
11:42A little disappointed with Smith and that, like, he had that drop.
11:46He just, that's nerves, man.
11:48He kind of collapses his body.
11:51Ends up on the ground.
11:52Ends up on the ground, kind of like, I'm in between catching it and body catching it.
11:56And, you know, when you collapse like that, but then he came back the next play or two and then
12:02made the crossing route catch.
12:03And then you're like, okay, he's back.
12:05But that was just, that's just nerves right off the jump.
12:09But, you know, they're going to have to make some decisions on some of these guys.
12:13And, you know, I know Brad and Babe and Christy were all talking about with Brown.
12:17And, like, how many receivers can you keep?
12:21You know, how many, like, all of a sudden you want to keep more tight ends?
12:25You want to keep, you know, are you going to keep five receivers, six receivers?
12:29You've got other positions.
12:31You've got the safety position you're going to have to think about.
12:33You know, you have to think about these corners, the linebackers.
12:36There are going to be some spots, and wide receiver might be one of them, where they can't carry a
12:44sixth guy.
12:45Yeah.
12:45You know, they just can't.
12:47And so, and I'm not saying that Brown is the guy, but does that mean Mingo's in trouble?
12:53Yeah.
12:53Does that mean, you know, how is this all going to really play out?
12:56Valdez, Scantling.
12:58You know what, that to me is kind of a move-on situation right there.
13:02I think that's a guy that, to me, you body catch, you, you know, he can, there's, I've seen a
13:08couple of extensions where he's made some plays,
13:10but just some contested catch stuff, I'm just not really confident in him.
13:15Yeah, Camden Brown, he might have secured that wide receiver five spot for you tonight.
13:19It's very, I mean, it could be very reminiscent of what Kevontae Turpin did a few years ago,
13:23and then they're like, you know what, you don't have to play anymore.
13:26You're good, but.
13:26I keep playing him, though.
13:27I would, too.
13:28I keep playing him just because, give him the experience, because what if it's a situation where, you know,
13:35you're going to get him, say he is the fifth receiver, how active is he going to be then?
13:40You know, you need to get him all the work that you can now, because he is likely, as the
13:46fifth receiver,
13:48is going to be inactive every single week.
13:51That's something you have to think about right there.
13:53If, in fact, he is the, you know, like, if Turpin is the, Turpin's the fourth, you know.
13:59It's what happened to Mingo all last year.
14:01Yeah, exactly.
14:02Are you the fourth, you know, if you're the fifth guy or sixth guy, you could be inactive.
14:07So, I think you get him all the work you can right now.
14:09And what I loved about him tonight, the blocking as well.
14:13You know, just a well-rounded overall.
14:15Well, that's what the film's going to show you tomorrow.
14:17I mean, watching TV copy of the game, you know, you could kind of pick some things up.
14:22But there were some things where guys had to deliver some blocks, and they were able to get that done
14:27on the outside.
14:28A couple different times, the screen package stuff.
14:30Like I said, the quick screen, the smoke screen, where it's just, we can't run the ball, get the ball
14:35into a receiver's hands,
14:36and then Mike Hudson and those guys can just go.
14:40877-881-1053, the number to call, the number to text.
14:43We will get to the phones on the other side.
