00:00We head out to the Make It Right Call, Kyle Wright Hotline. Welcome on of 92.3 The Fan, Cleveland
00:04.com, the coach himself, Lance Reisland.
00:07Coach, welcome to the show.
00:09Hey guys, happy Friday to you. What's going on?
00:11Happy Friday. Digging the vibes here, bringing the good energy. We will ask you, I think JP's more of a
00:17Denzel Boston guy.
00:18I'm more of an Omar Cooper Jr. guy. Who is your favorite of the second tier wide receivers?
00:24So wide receivers not named, Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon, and Jordan Tyson.
00:30Well, I'll start by saying this. I don't think there's a big separation between Lemon, Tyson, and Tate and the
00:35next tier guys.
00:36I don't know if any of those top tier guys are A pluses, but there's a bunch of B pluses
00:41in this draft.
00:42And if I had to pick one guy, I would lean towards Omar Cooper, but a guy that no one
00:46really talks about that I think is outstanding,
00:48and I'm actually happy that he ran, is Malachi Fields from Notre Dame.
00:51I think he had a great senior bowl. I really liked watching his film, and he plays faster than his
00:5640 speed.
00:57And, you know, that's kind of what football speed is to me, the ability to play fast,
01:01which tells me you understand the game because you can get to top speed fast.
01:05So if I had to pick somebody, if I was not taking those top three, it would be Omar Cooper,
01:09but then it would be Malachi Fields followed by Boston.
01:12All right. They had, well, they had Boston in yesterday. They had Bernard in today out of Alabama.
01:17Have you had a chance to look at him yet?
01:19Yeah. Bernard is, he would, you know, everybody says slot receiver, outside receiver.
01:24I think for me, that's kind of outdated. I don't really look at receivers like that.
01:27It's touch guys or outside guys on the edge who are going to win 50-50 balls.
01:30And, you know, obviously when you look at him, he's a guy who wins, he can win a slot.
01:35He's a very talented guy, but he's a guy that has struggled sometimes with consistency.
01:40He's not a vertical threat, but he's a guy who works well in zone.
01:43And, you know, you're still seeing about 70% zone in the NFL.
01:48I like him a lot. He's a guy, but I don't have him as high as the other guys.
01:52But, again, that speaks to the depth of this, you know, the draft.
01:55When you talk about all the guys, you know, people don't even talk about Eliza Surratt or Skylar Bell or
02:00Lance Kidd or Ted Hurst.
02:02There's a bunch of guys that people don't talk about that are kind of in that same boat.
02:06It kind of, are you looking for a touch guy or are you looking for a 50-50 guy?
02:09For me, there's not a big difference between, if you like the outside guy, between Tate, Boston, Malachi Fields, the
02:15Brazil kid out of Tennessee is really good.
02:17And then Chris Bell is a bigger guy who can kind of do both.
02:20So, you know, once again, there's not a huge separation.
02:23That's why I don't like those guys necessarily at six, because you can get almost the same type of guy
02:28at 24 and even 39.
02:29All right. So we had our buddy Joe DeLeon on a couple days ago, and people didn't like his Carnell
02:36Tate take,
02:37which was if Carnell Tate is a number two, he's a Robin, he needs a Batman.
02:45Do you concur with that assessment of Carnell Tate?
02:48Well, Carnell Tate's a really, really difficult breakdown, Nick, because the bottom line is Ohio State's kind of a weird
02:54spot, right?
02:55You've got guys who are having incredible careers who aren't even the number one guy on their team.
02:59And that means something to me, because you're not getting the number one corner.
03:02You're not getting – you're getting rotation away from you.
03:05And usually, for me, that usually means the corner that you're getting plays off.
03:09So he didn't get a lot of press coverage in his time at Ohio State.
03:12He does everything well.
03:14But what he really does well is he wins those 50-50 balls.
03:16He's really good deep.
03:18And, you know, he's good, you know, competing for the football in space.
03:22You know, I don't see a big difference between him and Boston and Malachi Fields.
03:27In fact, I think Malachi Fields is right there with him because of his body size.
03:32And, you know, he doesn't run – he's not a huge 40 guy, but these are guys who can go
03:37win in space.
03:37And for me, Fields is even a bigger body.
03:40No, I don't think Carnell Tate is the number six pick in the draft.
03:44But that's, again, that's kind of this receiver crew.
03:46It doesn't take 32 teams to think he's, you know, the best guy.
03:50It takes one.
03:50It takes one guy to think he's the number one guy.
03:53I just don't.
03:54I don't think he separates enough for me.
03:56And, once again, it's not his fault.
03:58But having Jeremiah Smith, it makes you think.
04:02He's not the primary guy they're trying to stop in the scouting report throughout the week.
04:06There's something to be said about that.
04:07Now, other guys have had great success.
04:09But other success from Ohio State, guys, does not mean anything for Carnell Tate.
04:13Do I think he's going to be a good pro?
04:14Yes.
04:14I don't know if he's going to be lights out like JSN and the rest of those guys.
04:18If Jalen Hurts was in this draft, where would he be drafted?
04:22Jalen Hurts?
04:23I wouldn't have him at six.
04:26He would be quarterback-wise.
04:28I would say he is.
04:31You don't think Jalen Hurts would go top six overall in this draft?
04:34No.
04:35Are you talking Jalen Hurts now or Jalen Hurts when it came out?
04:37Jalen Hurts would be really weird if we talked about him coming out now from six years ago.
04:41No, I don't think so.
04:43No, I really don't.
04:45And here's why.
04:46I think he's a guy you win with.
04:47He's had great pieces around him.
04:49And I think that's important that everybody understands.
04:51But he's not going to have that at most teams.
04:54Most teams aren't going to have what Philadelphia has with their offensive line, their skill players, and that defense.
05:00And that atmosphere they have in Philadelphia.
05:02It's pretty awesome being up there this year watching that joint practice.
05:05So, no, I don't think he is.
05:07I think he's a really good quarterback.
05:08And sometimes people think, oh, you don't like Jalen Hurts?
05:10No, but I don't think he's Lamar Jackson.
05:12I don't think he's any of those top couple guys, Josh Allen, Patrick Holmes.
05:16I think he's a guy who's very good in the scheme they have.
05:20But if he has to carry the load, I haven't seen that from him.
05:24The ability to – he can carry a team and elevate all the guys around him.
05:28Now, he's really good, and he's a piece of the pie.
05:30But if you're talking at six, he's got to be the biggest piece of the pie.
05:32And I don't think he is.
05:33That's all.
05:34The biggest piece of the pie.
05:35Do you think we're getting the biggest piece of the pie at six this year?
05:40You know, I don't think if you – I don't think if you stretch for Monroe Friedling.
05:43I really like Monroe Friedling.
05:44But I think if you take anybody besides Downs, Arvel Reese, or Sonny Stiles,
05:50I do think it's a stretch at six.
05:52And if you think, well, we don't have those needs,
05:54you always have needs for great football players.
05:56So, yes, I think if you take one of those threes, you're perfect.
05:59You're taking game changers.
06:00Now, if you take Downs at six and then maybe trade back and you try to get back a little
06:06bit closer
06:06and you get to like 12 or 14 or whatever that is, and then you go with Monroe Friedling
06:10or then you go with a receiver that you like, a lemon, or a guy that will be left.
06:16Because there's a lot of really good receivers on the board.
06:18So, no, I don't think if you take a tackle, if you take Monroe Friedling, if you take a receiver,
06:23I don't think there's a receiver for me at six.
06:26But there are some game changers.
06:28Now, I would take Jeremiah Love at six because I think he's a guy who can change the narrative of
06:33the game.
06:34And I don't care, you can never have too many guys who are better than the other players.
06:38And Jeremiah Love is one of those guys, too.
06:39But he's the only one on offense for me that would be worthy of six.
06:43So, you don't think David Bailey or Reuben Bain would be worth the sixth pick?
06:48Oh, yeah, those guys are involved.
06:50I would take Bailey and Bain, too.
06:51They're in my experience.
06:51Oh, yeah, those guys.
06:52I like those guys.
06:53I was just going to say.
06:53You know, those same kind of guys, though.
06:56You know, same kind of, when you look at, like, when I, Downs, Love, Bailey, Reese, Styles, Reuben Bain.
07:02Those are my top six guys.
07:04I have Mendoza at seven.
07:06Obviously, I'm not huge on Mendoza, but those top six guys, yeah, Nick, those guys kind of are in that
07:11realm.
07:12But I like Reese and Love and Downs more than Bailey and Reuben Bain.
07:17And I don't care about how short Reuben Bain's arms are.
07:20Watch the film.
07:20He's fantastic.
07:21So, if you were the Raiders, you wouldn't take Mendoza at one, then, it sounds like.
07:25You know, I'm not.
07:25I just, here's the thing about Mendoza.
07:27He throws, he's so good, really pre-snap reads.
07:31You know, he does not get to his second and third progressions as much as you would like.
07:36Because at Indiana, there's so much RPO stuff.
07:38Now, he does have to read stuff, and people have pushed back.
07:40I mean, and I agree.
07:41But in the NFL, you do so much full-fold reads, where you read one side, and you got to
07:47come back to the other side.
07:48And you have to get not only to the second, not only to the third, but you got to get
07:51to that fourth progression.
07:52I think he's the kind of film rat and the kind of guy who loves football that will get there.
07:57But you worry about that.
07:58And then his ability to scramble, the only time he really saw an NFL style of defense, that would be
08:06the Buckeyes.
08:07And he just looked kind of a little bit rattled, in my opinion, for the number one pick.
08:12And, you know, for me, he's not Andrew Luck.
08:14He's not a for sure, absolutely no doubter for me.
08:20I think he's really good.
08:21But, no, I wouldn't take him at number one if I was the Raiders.
08:24All right.
08:24Let's move to Kenyon Sadiq, the tight end out of Oregon.
08:28There have been some people who suggest if you take Monroe Freeling at six, you're in a trade down, you
08:34take a tackle, and then at 24, none of the receivers you love there are there.
08:39Maybe you go Sadiq instead.
08:42Now, we know that Todd Munkin loves multiple tight ends.
08:46We know that, you know, we're going to certainly see more tight end usage this year.
08:50But, do you think that Sadiq and Harold Fannin Jr. can share the field at the same time, or is
08:56there too much overlap of what they do?
08:58No, Sadiq's a, you know, Fannin's really good.
09:01Sadiq's in that same boat.
09:02But I think Sadiq can even be more of an outside threat.
09:04You can put him out at one.
09:06You can run hitches.
09:07You can run the route tree that X receivers run with Sadiq.
09:11You know, Fannin can do that.
09:12But Fannin really works well inside, right, inside on the safeties and linebackers.
09:16Sadiq is a freakish athlete.
09:18But there are guys like Oscar Delp, Eli Stowers.
09:21There's other really good athletes in there.
09:23Sadiq just wows you with his physical tools, and they're really good.
09:27But, yes, I think they can absolutely match.
09:29You know, getting Stahl is so important because he's the guy, he's the grunt guy.
09:33He's going to put his hand on the ground.
09:34He's the guy who's going to make everybody else look better.
09:37They do have to find that next receiver that can block a little bit, but also be position flexible.
09:42So you can get in 12 personnel and dictate what you want to see from the defense.
09:46And, yeah, I think Sadiq's the guy.
09:47I'd be shocked.
09:48I got him eighth on my board.
09:49He's a tremendous athlete.
09:50But there's Oscar Delp, like I said.
09:52There's Eli Stowers.
09:53There's other tight ends that are out there that kind of fit the mold of what Munkin wants
09:58to do in that 12 personnel.
09:59All right.
09:59You mentioned Malachi Fields.
10:01Who are some of the other players that you really feel like the draft community is just
10:04missing that you're high on?
10:07Well, you know, here's the thing.
10:09You know, I like there's some corners no one talks about.
10:12Well, obviously, the Browns don't need a corner.
10:14So you got the Manzo Delaney kid out of LSU.
10:18He's really, really good.
10:19People are not talking about Kendrick Falk, the edge rusher from Oregon.
10:25He's really good.
10:26Anthony Hill, Jacob Rodriguez, the linebacker.
10:29You know, I think Jacob Rodriguez proved himself in the senior bowl and with how he ran.
10:33He's one of the most instinctual football players in the draft, in my opinion.
10:38He just does everything well.
10:40Mike Washington, a running back from Arkansas.
10:43He had a great senior bowl.
10:44His film is outstanding.
10:46You got C.J. Allen.
10:48He's a linebacker from Georgia.
10:49He is a thumper, downhill guy.
10:52And then there's some tackles.
10:53You know, JP, there's some tackles that I watch when you talk about developmental guy,
10:56like an Emil Wagner from Notre Dame.
10:58Big, long guy, 6'6", 300 pounds.
11:01Isaiah World, 6'8", 3'18", from Oregon.
11:04Real long guy, good pass protection.
11:07And then my number one guy in pass protection is a kid named Trey Zune from Texas A&M, 6
11:12'6", 3'19".
11:13He's not great in the run game, but he probably is my top tackle in kicking back and in pass
11:20protection,
11:20quick setting, jump setting.
11:21So there's some guys out there that no one talks about because, you know,
11:25when you have that 6th pick and the 24th pick, everybody kind of focuses on that.
11:29But there's a lot of really good guys you can get on day two and three at all the positions
11:33of need for the Browns.
11:35All right.
11:36Just give me a prospect you just want to dump all over.
11:38You just think stinks.
11:40I think stinks?
11:42Yeah.
11:42Yeah.
11:42Just awful.
11:43Just awful.
11:44Who in the hell would trap this clown?
11:45You don't understand it.
11:46Like, never in your wildest dream, if you were a GM, you'd take this guy.
11:50Oh, my God.
11:51You know, you guys know I don't work that way.
11:52I don't look for guys who stink.
11:54Let's see.
11:54I don't know.
11:57Let's see.
11:58I would – God, you guys – who do I think stinks?
12:01It's not that you're looking for.
12:02You just kind of stumble into it.
12:03Yeah.
12:04You know?
12:04That's usually how things that stink you haven't.
12:06Well, here's what I would say about this.
12:08The thing that – my projection, and I always try to keep things between, you know, a football – between
12:15the lines on the football field.
12:16But Makai Lemon's interview process killed me.
12:19And he's number one on my board.
12:21But you worry about guys that kind of do that because you worry about what they're going to do off
12:26the field.
12:26So, I don't really – I'm not really big into saying people stink, but I will say this.
12:30Yes, I think the whole process in the NFL – I don't understand why a guy would, you know, in
12:35this day and age, even if you have to fake it, why you would do that.
12:38Because you've immediately burned a couple bridges before you even get to the process.
12:42So, that would be one guy.
12:44Once again, though, there's – the guys I'm breaking down, these guys are all so talented.
12:48They really, really are.
12:50And it's almost a shock.
12:52Like, when I look at Marvin Harrison, that's why, you know, I'm like everybody else.
12:55I make a ton of mistakes.
12:56I was shocked he wasn't dominant.
12:57He was so good coming out of college.
12:59So, yeah, so the interview for Makai Lemon will be – that's the best I can do for you.
13:04All right.
13:05Lance Reisland says Makai Lemon stinks.
13:08You heard it here first.
13:10Coach, we appreciate you.
13:12Absolutely.
13:12Thanks for having me, guys.
13:13Have a good weekend.
