00:00Adam of the Bullpen Podcast. What's up, buddy?
00:02What's up, guys?
00:03It's funny. I feel old because I told this story earlier today.
00:07I'll tell it real quick. 30 seconds.
00:09I'm taking my son for shoes.
00:12And your oldest daughter is older than my son.
00:14So in a way, you're older than me, even though you're not.
00:17Yeah, thanks for that.
00:17But I take him for shoes. It's a young sales guy.
00:21He was great. Great sales guy.
00:22But as my son's running around, kind of testing the shoes,
00:26the guy goes to me, is he your son or your grandson?
00:29Oh, that was brutal.
00:31I know I'm getting gray up here, but he's not working on commission, is he?
00:36Because that's awful.
00:37I mean, come on.
00:39That's awful.
00:40How did you respond?
00:41I was just stunned.
00:43Because usually, and maybe I'm kidding myself,
00:45but I feel like usually people are surprised when they hear I'm 55.
00:48They think I'm a little, not that I look 30,
00:50but they always think I'm a little younger than 55.
00:53What's the lowest we think Adam could pass for?
00:56Could I pass for 45?
00:57I think you could pass for 45.
00:58I think I could.
00:59I was thinking 47 in my head.
01:01I don't know why 47, but I was thinking it's very specific.
01:03But I was like, 47 seems right.
01:05I think with the weight loss, I could pass a little younger.
01:08A little.
01:09And I have a young-ish, in some ways a young person,
01:12in some ways very old, but I don't know.
01:14But it balances out.
01:17Approximately 55.
01:18Love of Billy Joel.
01:20Yeah, that's true.
01:21By the way, I took my son to a concert for his birthday.
01:24I was like, where do you want to go to?
01:26Chicago and Sticks.
01:28He's like an old man.
01:30And it was great.
01:31But I was the 17th youngest person at Blossom that night.
01:35He took him to Chicago and Sticks.
01:35Was he the 16th?
01:37I mean, he, I took him, we went with him, two of his friends,
01:41and another one of his friends' dads.
01:42And the three, I don't know if I saw another kid there.
01:45Maybe one or two.
01:46Listen, I want to say this respectfully, because he's your son.
01:48Get that kid drug tested.
01:51Hey, listen, I'd rather him listen to that stuff than the new music today.
01:55Yeah, that's fair.
01:57Or watch the Browns.
01:58Maybe he can play on our all-weed football team.
02:00Oh, okay.
02:01So let's pitch it.
02:03JP, elevator pitch.
02:04We created an all-weed football league.
02:06But the big hook on this is that, so it would say the type of weed
02:11that the players are smoking, so you could smoke the favorite type of weed
02:15that your favorite player is smoking as well.
02:17It's like as close to the game in action as you could possibly find.
02:20Okay.
02:21I'm very confused right now.
02:22Now I'm definitely the older guy.
02:24Okay.
02:25It's a weed.
02:26You've got to smoke in order to play, but you've got to be smoking while playing.
02:30Oh!
02:30So it's a football league where everybody gets stoned.
02:33Yeah, sponsored by Big Weed, okay?
02:34That's a great idea.
02:35Big Marijuana is big in this, okay?
02:37But then also, it's like, give me some marijuana fun names.
02:41Maui Waui.
02:42Maui Waui, right?
02:43So like your cornerback who you'll love.
02:44You're like, this guy is great.
02:45I love this guy.
02:46Well, guess what?
02:47He's on Maui Waui this week.
02:48And so if you want to be like him in the moment, you then also take some Maui Waui,
02:53and then you're feeling connected to the team.
02:55You're feeling connected to the guy.
02:56Are we actually playing?
02:57Oh, yeah.
02:58Or are we just watching other real players play show?
03:00Oh, Josh Gordon like you wouldn't believe.
03:02Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:02And Josh Gordon's a head coach.
03:04Ricky Williams is a head coach.
03:05Oh, yeah.
03:05Yeah, those were just the first two that we thought there.
03:08We were trying to get Deshaun to get out of his head a little bit.
03:11Because Deshaun, he's just a mental, he's in his head too much.
03:14Yes, I agree.
03:15And so we need to find some way to get him calmer.
03:17I don't think he can be saved, guys.
03:19I love your idea, but I don't think it could save him.
03:22He might be on stage.
03:23Yeah, he might be.
03:24Also, I don't know that that's going to help most in the timing of things.
03:28No.
03:28For processing speed.
03:30Yeah, he'll be slower.
03:30Oh, that's another rule of this I just created.
03:32Yeah.
03:32No delay of game penalties.
03:34Oh, my God.
03:35He'll be the MVP.
03:36Unlike the Browns yesterday, who got a delay of game penalty after another penalty.
03:41So, all right.
03:42So we were just doing this topic of who lost more.
03:46Like who, whether it's respect, whatever.
03:48Yeah.
03:48Who was Sunday more damaging for?
03:51I think Deshaun's already been so damaged in how he thinks of himself, how the fans think of him.
03:56I don't know you could have a lower Q score.
03:59I thought both today and yesterday was a huge hit to Todd Munkin's stock.
04:04I agree.
04:05Now, Deshaun Watson lost whatever he had, the little pennies or nickels or whatever.
04:10But definitely the coach lost more because I guess there was a little hope that you were like, okay, anytime
04:18I've seen Deshaun in practice, he looks terrible.
04:20You guys were there a lot, obviously.
04:21You saw him a lot.
04:24And I don't see it.
04:25He's been terrible.
04:27He looks terrible.
04:28But maybe Todd Munkin has seen something that just we haven't seen.
04:32Or in the huddle or the locker room, there's something there.
04:37And even though it's one game, it was very clear none of that existed.
04:42Because he was so bad.
04:43He obviously raised his numbers in garbage time in that fourth quarter.
04:47But he was so bad.
04:48I mean, don't you think all the sacks or at least four of the five sacks were on him?
04:52You kept running into it.
04:53Yeah.
04:53You can't drop back 15 steps when you're in the shotgun.
04:57Yeah.
04:57This is, it's 100% true.
05:00So, yes, Todd Munkin comes.
05:03Plus, to me, and I apologize because I was occupied the last couple hours, so I didn't hear you guys
05:09since 3 o'clock.
05:10Faster.
05:11I'm sorry.
05:12But, but the, when you, when you look at when it was 31-0 and they kicked that field goal,
05:20to me, that's, that's quitting.
05:22That's like somebody, I think Lima might have said this.
05:26I'll give him credit.
05:26I hate to give him any credit.
05:28But, the Browns are like the FCS team playing a Division I college, you know, a one.
05:34Yeah, you just couldn't get embarrassed with having nothing on the board at that point.
05:37You didn't, he's like, oh, I better not get shut out.
05:39So, yeah.
05:39That field goal is meaningless.
05:41It was ridiculous.
05:42So, yes, Todd Munkin and the ridiculous defensive coordinator, I thought, both look even, or took a bigger drop than
05:52Watson.
05:52So, I agree with you.
05:52What was more disappointing to you, though?
05:53Yeah.
05:54Is it the offense or the defense?
05:55Because, like, the offense we could have all kind of seen coming.
05:57If we, if none of us believed Deshaun Watson was any good, it was going to be, that didn't surprise
06:01anybody.
06:01The defense, five first drives for Jacksonville, they scored in every one of them.
06:06Yes.
06:06And in the first four, it goes touchdown, touchdown, field goal, touchdown, touchdown.
06:09Like, that, that to me, I think, was the biggest indictment on the game.
06:12100% the defense was more disappointing because just like with the Deshaun Watson versus Todd Munkin question, it's the
06:18same thing.
06:19My expectations for the offense were nothing.
06:21I didn't think the offense would be good.
06:23I know we all like the skill, position, talent, but if the quarterback stinks, the quarterback stinks.
06:27There's just so much those guys can do, especially when they're rookies or second-year guys.
06:31The defense, I thought they, I think a lot of people thought it would be just as good.
06:37I thought it would take a little step back.
06:38And again, we got to see more than one game, but in this game, they were horrible.
06:42Absolutely horrible.
06:43They got, they got zero pressure on Trevor Lawrence.
06:46He did.
06:47I mean, they could have scored 50 guys.
06:49They could have called their number.
06:50Yeah.
06:50Yeah.
06:51They would, they did anything they wanted.
06:52I was shocked the one time the Browns held them to that field goal, as you said.
06:56It was stunning.
06:57Well, I think a lot of, so this is where I had been hopeful.
07:00Maybe Mike Rutenberg wouldn't come in and try and make it his defense.
07:05Yeah.
07:05But when I hear coach, coach Riz earlier today say he thought it could have been alignment
07:11issues with your wide nine.
07:12Yeah.
07:13That's a coaching issue.
07:14When I hear that they ran, was it 67% zone?
07:17Yes.
07:18When last year, I think they ran like 55% land.
07:21Last year.
07:22Yes.
07:23Yeah.
07:23They've always been more man than, than the average team.
07:26That to me is coaching.
07:27That to me is a coach saying, I need to make this my defense.
07:30And maybe not knowing what the hell that actually means and what your personnel is good at.
07:34Yeah, I agree.
07:34Cause Jason said to me earlier today, he goes, well, you know, maybe he's not comfortable
07:39coaching that.
07:40And I'm like, well, you better get, I mean, if you're a coach to me, when I hear all the
07:45coat, this is the coach's style.
07:47Like you've got to adjust as you said to the talent you have.
07:50Yeah.
07:50Denzel Ward is one of the best cover corners in the league.
07:54Tyson Campbell is a cover corner.
07:56You got, you're always going to play some zone.
07:58Now, Dustin said, you know, he goes, listen, I think it was wrong that they played that
08:03much zone, but he did say, he was like, listen, if they're not going to get the pass, like
08:08when Miles Garrett was here, it was easier to play more man because you knew you didn't
08:12have to cover for as long.
08:13So I get it.
08:15But then if you're worried that we, that we have to cover longer, then why not blitz
08:18more?
08:19I think they blitzed three times the whole game.
08:21Yeah.
08:22That's it.
08:22It's tough.
08:23But can you talk about like the lack of pressure too on that?
08:25I mean, Mason Graham got the sack.
08:27That was nice to see.
08:27But outside of that, you had nothing.
08:29Yeah.
08:30Just a zero.
08:30You thought Miles Garrett's stat line was bad.
08:32That's basically what every edge defender we have did.
08:35Yeah.
08:35We were hoping for a big impact.
08:37Garrett Burst, big no show.
08:38Nothing.
08:38He did nothing.
08:39I mean, when you say who played well, I'm like, you know, Mason Graham had the sack and
08:43he had another tackle for loss and Schwestinger got his, you know, hundred tackles that he
08:47always gets.
08:48And you saw the little glimpses and the chances they got for your young receivers.
08:52But overall.
08:53Yeah.
08:53PFF graded out Denzel Ward really, really high.
08:56They gave him a 90 grade.
08:57I was surprised by that.
08:58I don't know how they ended up getting there.
08:59But defensively, nobody outside of Denzel graded out at all.
09:03And Denzel didn't, I didn't think, play particularly well.
09:05Spencer Fano had a bad grade.
09:07I mean, I'm not watching every play of the offensive line.
09:09I actually thought that was the one spot that maybe was a little bit better than I
09:14thought that'd be.
09:14Yeah, I think the offensive line was kind of encouraging.
09:16If we're going to find like an encouragement.
09:17I agree.
09:17I thought if you consider the fact that they'd never played together outside of what?
09:23One drive maybe in the preseason.
09:25When you, the Browns are the first team since at least 1970 to have five new starters on
09:30the offensive line.
09:31So, plus, both of the rookie, two rookies, both playing a position they didn't play last
09:36year.
09:36Yeah, and I thought Barber was pretty good.
09:37He was really good.
09:38He got, I think he got the best PFF grade, I believe.
09:40He did on the offensive side, yeah.
09:41So, if the Browns had a serviceable, forget good quarterback, a serviceable quarterback,
09:48the offensive line would have been a zero factor in terms of a loss.
09:51But what does that say about Judkins, though?
09:52This is the worry I have.
09:53He had a lot of white boxes.
09:54We're admitting that we thought the offensive line was pretty decent, all things considered.
09:58And then Judkins just had nothing going on.
10:00He was terrible.
10:01He was terrible.
10:02And we've given, to be fair, like, everybody got excited about his season last year.
10:06He wasn't really good.
10:07But we gave him a pass because we all see the talent because the offensive line stunk.
10:12Yeah, same thing Raiders fans did for Gentie, for instance.
10:15Exactly.
10:15And Gentie went out and had a monster game yesterday.
10:17Could have used one of those.
10:18Yeah, exactly.
10:20And how many times – I mean, there were times, obviously, Nick Chubb had a good offensive line here,
10:24but not all the time.
10:26And, you know, Nick Chubb would have a good game almost every game, whether the offensive line played well or
10:30not.
10:30So, I still – I'm not giving up on Quinshawn Judkins.
10:33I think he's really good.
10:34But I think it's fair to be critical of his performance in this past game.
10:38Now, I know we have you here on a Browns.
10:41It would be great to call it Victory Monday.
10:42But I do want to talk about the Gardos.
10:45They've got a big series coming up against the White Sox starting tonight.
10:48I can't wait.
10:49I was primed and ready to attack the Guardians for turning Saturday into a bullpen game.
10:56And then they went out on Sunday and won the series.
10:58So, I have no attack.
10:59I simply have excitement for this series and what it could mean.
11:02And I was totally okay with that because I needed Gavin Williams to pitch against the White Sox.
11:07Gavin Williams is your ace.
11:08And for the most part, you know, you look at the 370-something ERA.
11:12That doesn't feel like ace.
11:13But we all know watching them all the time, he's had like five or six starts where he's just been
11:17terrible for whatever reason.
11:18It's like one a month.
11:19And then he's fantastic every other start.
11:22If he's truly an ace, he has got to go out there tonight and pitch a gem and completely –
11:28The White Sox are struggling.
11:29I think they've lost eight of 12.
11:31They can't pitch right now.
11:32They can't pitch.
11:33I think Burke's coming in after – what's his name opens?
11:35Newcomb.
11:36Newcomb, yes.
11:37Yeah, they're 28th right now since the All-Star break in starting pitching.
11:40Yeah.
11:40The White Sox are.
11:41All they do is just try to out-slug teams at this point.
11:43Which, you know, they can do.
11:44It's a pretty good recipe.
11:45But even Burke-Ambi's been kind of cold of late.
11:47He hasn't had a great last few weeks.
11:51So, I am so excited for this series.
11:54I think about a big White Sox-Indians at the time series.
11:58Remember in – was it 14 when Giambi hit the walk-off against the White Sox?
12:02Yeah, the Golden Thong.
12:03The Golden Thong.
12:04The Golden Thong.
12:05Was that 14 or 15?
12:06It's all a blur now.
12:08Ooh.
12:09I don't know.
12:09But they were battling for the playoffs at the end of the year.
12:12And I was at that game, and everybody was going crazy.
12:15I am so excited for this series, guys.
12:17I want to know how you feel.
12:19To me, you sweep the series, they're going to win the division.
12:21Oh, yeah.
12:22Win two out of three, I think it's 50-50.
12:25Lose two out of three or get swept, you got no shot in the division.
12:27I think that's the right read.
12:29Yeah, that seems right.
12:30The hard part I have is every time the Guardians seem like they put themselves in this position,
12:33where you have the pitching matchups every single night, and you get Gavin and you get Parker Messick.
12:38I don't know why.
12:39It just feels like they always just stub their toe.
12:41They just never –
12:42They have this year, yes.
12:43When I need them to finish the job and actually do it, it feels like this is when they fall
12:47short
12:47and they make things incredibly interesting once again.
12:49Do you not have confidence in Gavin Williams tonight?
12:51No, I don't.
12:52But it's not necessarily Gavin Williams.
12:54It's more about the team in general.
12:56I just – I have a hard time with this team and this offense, and even as better as they've
13:00been,
13:01then I've got to worry about the starting pitching, and I just –
13:03Again, every time it feels like they should, they don't.
13:07That's fair.
13:07It's been the case this year.
13:09In past years, the Guardians, you feel like they're going to pull it out in a big spot.
13:12Right?
13:13Yeah.
13:13Especially in the regular season.
13:15And this year, it's been the opposite.
13:16Historically, it's what we bank on with that.
13:17Right.
13:17It's like when they need to, they do, and this year it just hasn't happened enough.
13:21They are usually the anti-Browns, especially in the regular season.
13:25But they haven't been this year.
13:26They have another shot.
13:28They have another shot.
13:29They've got to get it done tonight.
13:30I like that Bazzana and Rocchio, because they were both in such a big funk,
13:34and the fact that they're both getting hot right now.
13:37Still annoyed about Ralphie Velasquez not being here, but all right.
13:40I've got to get over it, I think.
13:41But I'm hoping we have a packed house tonight.
13:44What do you guys think?
13:46No, not on a Monday.
13:47I wish they could.
13:50I wish they – it does feel like the enthusiasm has kind of waned over the past couple weeks, though.
13:54It has, but this is it.
13:55Like, you control your destiny.
13:57This should be massive.
13:57They could be the two-seed, as bad as – mediocre as they've been all season long.
14:02They could be the two-seed, get a bye, and then play another mediocre team
14:06like the White Sox or Astros or Blue Jays or whoever in the second round.
14:11Selfishly, I'm hoping not only do they win the division,
14:13but I'm hoping they achieve everything they want to this year,
14:15not just for us having fun, but for the idea that it would show the front office
14:18that when you make the moves – not that Adele and Will are massive moves,
14:22but the reason why you're in this right now is Adele, Will, and then Hanau.
14:25And, like, actually calling him up and making the moves you need to
14:29and understanding that you had to change the offense.
14:32In years past, they got stubborn with this stuff.
14:33Yes.
14:34Them understanding that and making the moves, I'd like to see them rewarded for it.
14:37I think they are – for them, those were massive moves for the Guardians.
14:40Big time, yeah.
14:41For the Dodgers, it wouldn't be, or the Yankees, but for the Guardians –
14:44They just historically didn't do it.
14:45Right.
14:46I mean, they haven't – it was the biggest moves they made since Andrew Miller.
14:50Ah, Josh Donaldson.
14:52That deadline –
14:53Yeah, but he was past his prime, though.
14:54But those were big moves they made.
14:56And he didn't do anything.
14:57He didn't.
14:58They also made another move, and I think it was for another bat,
15:01that also didn't work out at that deadline.
15:03I can't remember who it was, but I remember thinking, like, finally –
15:06I feel like it was an outfielder.
15:07Yeah, for some reason, I'm thinking Jose Bautista.
15:09There was no way it was Jose Bautista.
15:11No, no, no.
15:12I don't remember.
15:13Yeah, I think you're right, but –
15:15I jammed you up over a very minor detail there.
15:18That's what I do.
15:19You got excited.
15:19I think Adele – I love Adele.
15:21I think he fits on the team well.
