00:01911, where's your emergency?
00:03We're in a boat crash on Arthur's Creek.
00:06There's six of us and one is missing.
00:12The Murdoch family saga started with the boat crash.
00:17Learning more details about the continuing search
00:19for Hampton County, South Carolina teenager.
00:22But ended up becoming a much, much, much larger story.
00:33Who killed him? Why is this happening to these people?
00:37This was an incredibly powerful family.
00:41He stole from people he was supposed to protect.
00:44The death of a 19-year-old man,
00:46which for years had been unresolved,
00:48but has now been reopened.
00:49He was murdered.
00:50And somebody in Hampton County knows exactly who did it.
00:55Everyone around this guy seems to die, except him.
01:00Your Honor, this is the tip of the iceberg.
01:03This is an ongoing investigation.
01:04We're talking about millions of dollars that went missing.
01:08Get that right there away from me.
01:10Oh my God, yeah.
01:12Pandora's box is open, and the demons are loose.
01:39The low country of South Carolina.
01:43This area is steeped in history.
01:48If you just look at it from the physicality of it,
01:51it is entrancing.
01:56This is the old South, essentially.
01:59There are close-knit families.
02:01There are long traditions.
02:02There are legacies.
02:04Very tight-knit community.
02:07Everybody loves the water here,
02:08and that's what we live here for.
02:09You can get yourself lost during the daytime
02:11and go exploring different creeks,
02:13and it's just beautiful.
02:14But at night, it's a whole different animal.
02:17Foggy nights on the water are dangerous.
02:40It's supposed to be a fun day.
02:42This is supposed to be just a fun trip out on the boat.
02:47You've got six kids.
02:49They're all between the ages of 18 and 20 years old.
02:53There's Connor Cook and his girlfriend, Miley Altman.
02:57You have Morgan Doty and her boyfriend, Paul Murdoch.
03:02And then there's Anthony Cook, Connor's cousin,
03:06and his girlfriend, Mallory Beach.
03:13Three couples, all lifelong friends.
03:16They're out for a night of fun.
03:19There was a trail of social media going on
03:23because that's what the kids do.
03:25They were apparently posting Snapchats for the whole night,
03:31kind of giving their friends and family and followers
03:35a glimpse into what was going on and what they were doing.
03:42They wanted to go to a party.
03:44There was an oyster roast going on at a mutual friend's house.
03:47We're famous for our oyster roasts.
03:49They are the quintessential gathering for family and friends.
03:54So instead of driving, Paul said,
03:59well, you know, my grandfather's river house is down here.
04:02So their plan for the night is first they're going to meet
04:05at Paul's grandfather's house on Chichesse.
04:08She Chesse is the body of water just down the river.
04:13And they're going to load up the boat and go down to an oyster roast.
04:17Everybody bring your own alcohol, bring your own beer.
04:21So the kids are picking up a six pack here, a 12 back there,
04:24and then they're getting ready for their trip out of the river.
04:39Nobody on that boat could have imagined how this day was going to end.
05:08February. It's cold for us.
05:12There was what we call sea fog.
05:14It was very foggy that morning and the fog was hovering right above sea level.
05:20They're trying to get home, back to this river house.
05:23The conditions were deteriorating quickly.
05:27Paul was driving the boat.
05:29Everybody on the boat was concerned about how he's driving.
05:32They're wanting him to show more caution, to be more careful.
05:38Anthony is like, get me off at the next dock.
05:41But let's be honest, like when you start getting into those waters, where are you getting off?
05:48And so it's terrifying.
05:55They were going through a place called Archer's Creek, which is near the Paris Island Bridge.
06:02That late at night, no lights, the conditions they're in, the fog, it's very dangerous.
06:11You've got six kids on it.
06:13You know, you've got two people standing at the console.
06:16You've got two young girls at the very front.
06:19The boat stops. They float.
06:25And for whatever reason, that throttle gets pushed all the way down.
06:32You've got Mallory and Anthony.
06:35They hit the deck. They're on the bottom.
06:37He's holding on to his girlfriend as hard as he can.
06:43And the next thing you know, they hit this pylon straight on.
07:00It was horrific.
07:08The boat just takes it straight into the hull, cracks it right down the seam, and you have a boat
07:16that is
07:16falling apart in front of your eyes.
07:19Paul Murdock, Anthony Cook, and Mallory Beach, all three were ejected from the boat.
07:25Connor, Miley, and Morgan managed to stay in the boat, but two of them were severely injured in the process.
07:34Morgan's hand has been seriously injured, and she's screaming bloody murder.
07:39Paul's in the water.
07:40Connor has been injured severely on his face.
07:44They're all disoriented and in shock and traumatized by what's just happened.
07:50Anthony comes back across the water to where the boat wreckage is.
07:54He's asking, the pwons are still in the boat, where's Mallory? Where's Mallory?
07:58And they're like, what do you mean where's Mallory?
08:02Mallory Beach is nowhere to be found.
08:05And Anthony goes straight back into the water.
08:07Anthony's a big guy, you know, and he's trying to do whatever it takes to find her at that point.
08:13But as soon as he gets out there, he realizes this is a, he says, this is such a bad
08:18idea because the tide is ripping in this place.
08:23He is going to get pulled, sucked out.
08:26He doesn't know where he is.
08:28It's freezing cold.
08:29The water is freezing cold.
08:32So he comes back and starts running up and down, trying to find her, as does everybody else.
08:37There's just this sense of shock and, and, and not really knowing what to do at that point.
08:44And that's when the chaos and the confusion and the terror just starts seeping in.
08:54911, where's your emergency?
08:57Connor Cook calls dispatch.
09:00You can hear Connor trying to keep it together.
09:03We're in a boat crash on Archer's Creek.
09:06Where, whereabouts on Archer Street?
09:09In Archer's Creek, the only bridge on Archer's Creek.
09:12A boat, did you say a boat crash?
09:15A boat crash.
09:17There's, there's six of us and one is missing.
09:22Please send someone.
09:24No, I'm coming, we're coming, we're coming, okay?
09:26This is happening in sort of a no man's land, almost.
09:30This is not an easy to reach place.
09:33We're under the only bridge in Archer's Creek.
09:36Okay.
09:36If you come in Archer's Creek, there's only one bridge and we're under the bridge.
09:42Okay.
09:44Okay.
09:45Come in.
10:01Okay.
10:11You've got five young people out there,
10:15they're, they're distraught, they're frantic, they're cold, they're wet.
10:20They're screaming.
10:22Paul, Miley, Morgan, and Anthony are, according to the officers, I think they described him as grossly intoxicated when they
10:31saw him.
10:32Paul is walking around in his boxers.
10:35He starts mouthing off to the EMS personnel.
10:38He starts mouthing off to some of the law enforcement.
10:41And Anthony Cook basically is soaking wet.
10:46He's been in the water looking for Mallory, his girlfriend.
10:49And one of the officers pulls him aside and sort of tries to settle him down a little bit.
10:57There's five Mallory.
10:59Come on.
11:00There's five Mallory.
11:02Sit right here.
11:03We've got everybody coming out here.
11:05You're, you're, you're my concern, okay?
11:08I'm fine.
11:09No, you're not.
11:09Listen, man, my mom, my mom, my mom wants you to stay.
11:13Okay, listen.
11:14All right.
11:14My mom wants you to stay.
11:15I didn't tell you you're not in trouble.
11:16All right.
11:16Anything about that.
11:17I need to call him up.
11:19I need to call her.
11:22Anthony is trying to get a hold of his family.
11:25He needs to talk to his mom and tell her what's happened.
11:36Mom, y'all need to come to me for a quick.
11:42We hit a bridge in the boat.
11:47Connor's fucked up.
11:51Connor's messed up bad.
11:52We can't find Mallory.
11:54Morgan's messed up bad.
11:56We can't find Mallory.
11:59Mom, there's 50 cops here, Coast Guard, everything.
12:02We can't find Mallory.
12:05It's been 30 minutes, Mom.
12:15And while he's there, Paul is sort of making his way into the same area and looks over at where
12:24Anthony is.
12:24And he was smiling at the moment where Anthony's whole world was shattering.
12:30Anthony sees Paul and just explodes.
12:34He loses it.
12:35Get that right there away from me.
12:38I told him how big.
12:39I don't think he's with me drunk.
12:41Boy, you're fucking smiling like you're fucking funny.
12:45Sit down.
12:46My fucking girlfriend, go, bro.
12:48Do you think you're fucking funny?
12:51Sit down.
12:52Sit down.
13:06Sit down.
13:07Do y'all know Alex Murdoch?
13:09Oh, yeah, I know his name.
13:10That's his son.
13:14Good luck.
13:16When Anthony says, y'all know Alex Murdoch, that's his son, good luck, to me, that says it all.
13:24There was a sense of invincibility, immunity, and impunity around the Murdoch family.
13:31That Mallory was missing and they couldn't find her.
13:33He knows this is just probably going to be swept under the rug like everything else.
13:38This family was seen as untouchable.
13:52Hey, you been checked out?
13:53My name, huh?
13:55Hey, buddy.
13:56You been checked out by name, huh?
13:58Yeah, I'm fine.
13:59Sure?
13:59I think we should still get checked out, all right?
14:01Yeah, I'm fine.
14:02Hey, I'm good.
14:03What's your last name, buddy?
14:05Murdoch.
14:06M-U-R-D-A-U-G-H.
14:10The center character for what happened out on that boat was Paul Murdoch.
14:19Paul Murdoch is the youngest son of Alec.
14:25Alec Murdoch is the beneficiary of his family's four-generation legal dynasty.
14:33I grew up with a lot of Murdochs.
14:35I know Murdochs.
14:35The Murdoch family is synonymous with criminal justice, law enforcement, the law in this part of South Carolina.
14:45The Murdoch family dynasty started with Randolph, Sr.
14:50He was really the great patriarch of this family.
14:54In 1920, Randolph Murdoch was the first elected solicitor of the 14th Judicial Circuit.
15:03So solicitor is South Carolina's word for a district attorney.
15:06And it's the lead criminal prosecutor for that district, or in South Carolina, that circuit.
15:13It is a powerful role.
15:15The solicitor's office decides what cases to prosecute, and when a case is going to get prosecuted, and when people
15:21are charged.
15:22He would hold that position for 20 years.
15:25Right after his death, his son, Randolph Murdoch, also known as Buster, came into office, and he ruled from 1940
15:35until 1986.
15:37In 1986, his son, Randolph Murdoch III, took over, and eventually would be the solicitor until 2006.
15:47The personal injury law firm, PMPED, is a very important part of this family.
15:55It's a law firm that has been there for more than a century.
15:59Randolph III is still in this law firm, and his sons, Randy Murdoch, and Alec Murdoch, sort of carry on
16:10his legacy.
16:12Even though it was Peters Murdoch, Parker, Ellsworth, and Detrick, it was known as the Murdoch firm for generations.
16:22Everybody knows that if you want a powerful attorney, somebody that's going to take your case and win your case
16:28and get you a lot of money, you call the Murdochs.
16:32You call the Murdoch law firm.
16:36The influence of PMPED even extended to the courthouse that they practiced in, with dominating portraits of all of the
16:47members of the Murdoch family that served as solicitor,
16:50looking over the very people practicing in their courtroom.
16:56So, when this boat crash occurs, there is certainly the perception that the Murdochs are above the law.
17:20Hey, we're looking right now for them. They're down there looking, okay?
17:23They got a good search on them, right?
17:25Yeah, yeah.
17:25They probably don't have any reason.
17:27They're doing fine, okay?
17:29They're down there looking right now, okay?
17:31You know they got a good search, right?
17:44I'll be 21 in three days, man.
17:47What about the driver of the boat, C-21?
17:49No.
17:50Has everybody on the boat been drinking?
17:52Yeah.
17:53Especially the driver?
17:55How big the driver?
17:56But the driver, how much has he had to drink?
17:59This was an accident, and it is a chargeable offense, not just because someone is missing,
18:05but because also there was alcohol involved, and they're all underage.
18:10So, it's imperative that law enforcement understand who that driver is.
18:16Hey, I'm with the Department of Natural Resources.
18:19Who was driving the boat?
18:21Right, y'all picked up.
18:23The last time I grabbed my girlfriend, he got down in the bottom of the boat.
18:27Paul was driving.
18:31I begged and begged and begged and begged to let me go.
18:35Uh-huh.
18:37Paul, again, is reportedly grossly intoxicated, and one thing that sticks out is he was trying
18:44to get law enforcement to give him a phone.
18:48Can I use your phone?
18:49My phone.
18:49Okay.
18:50What?
18:50Can I use your phone?
18:51Hey, Bob.
18:52I ain't got my phone on me, brother.
18:53You ain't got your phone on you?
18:55No, you drop yours in the grass right back there.
19:06He didn't call his dad on that cell phone.
19:09He called Handsome.
19:12Handsome is Randolph.
19:14That's what his grandchildren called him.
19:16The grandfather, of course, is Randolph III, the third generation of solicitors in this area.
19:22A man of incredible power and influence, and obviously a great protector of the Murdoch family.
19:32When Handsome asked him who was driving the boat, he said cotton.
19:38Connor Cook is cotton.
19:40So Paul lied to his grandfather and told him that Connor Cook was driving the boat.
19:47So Connor and Miley, when they hear this, because Miley's standing nearby,
19:51his girlfriend, they kind of look at each other like,
19:54did he really just pin this on me?
19:56You know, did they really just, did this really just happen?
20:00You're going to tell your grandfather that Connor was driving?
20:17Paul Murdoch requires a police escort on his way to the hospital because he is so drunk,
20:23he doesn't know left from right.
20:25He doesn't know who's who.
20:27They have to literally physically get him into that ambulance and have an officer ride along with him
20:33to make sure that they get to the hospital.
20:35The only one that doesn't go is Anthony.
20:38Anthony refuses to get into the ambulance.
20:43He is literally waiting for them to find Mallory.
20:54When you're looking for someone like that, it's missing, it's been thrown into the water,
20:57you're obviously optimistic at first.
21:00We still had hope all through the night that we were going to find her unconscious floating.
21:05It was our best case scenario, and that's what we were hoping for.
21:09We don't know what happened to her at that point.
21:11The conditions are dangerous at best, and then a helicopter is out of the question.
21:17You know, what they would normally try and do is get a helicopter up in the air
21:21and start, you know, spotlighting every single thing around there
21:24and hoping that they catch a sight of her hair or her anything, and that's just not happening.
21:31Absolutely not possible.
21:33There is no way that they can fly a helicopter under these circumstances.
21:36That dense fog has really laid in.
21:40They need for that sun to come up because they know the sun's going to burn off the fog,
21:45and they have to just stop, call off the search at some point, and they have to wait.
21:54And it just is heartbreaking.
22:04The scene at the hospital, when they initially arrive, there's a lot of confusion.
22:09It's all hands on deck.
22:11The staff is there treating multiple trauma patients.
22:14You've got four teenagers now.
22:16Some of them are bleeding.
22:18They're injured.
22:19They're distraught.
22:29Morgan Dowdy has a severely lacerated hand and needs surgery.
22:34Connor Cook has a laceration on his face and a broken jaw.
22:39Miley Altman is also being examined for injuries.
22:45Paul Murdoch is reportedly so drunk and unruly that staff is having a hard time even treating him.
22:54He's making wildly inappropriate comments to some of the staff.
22:58The question is, is why wasn't there a field sobriety test done on Paul at the scene of the accident?
23:05By the time that Paul Murdoch was in the hospital, he had at least an hour and a half before
23:11he was required to submit to alcohol testing,
23:15which could have led to the depreciation of the amount of alcohol that was in his system.
23:20An officer is attempting to talk to Paul about what had happened.
23:25Were you driving the boat?
23:26What was going on that night?
23:28Have you been drinking?
23:31And then who walks in the door?
23:36Paul has now gotten in touch with his father, Alec, and he's gotten in touch with his grandfather, Randolph.
23:42They're now at the hospital.
23:45Randolph III and Alec Murdoch say, stop everything you're doing.
23:49You can speak to us.
23:50We're his attorneys.
23:54They were trying to not just see Paul, who would be their next of kin,
23:58but also trying to see all of the other patients there, all of the other kids that were in the
24:02boat.
24:05Alec Murdoch, according to hospital staff, is now going up and down the corridor looking at the board,
24:12trying to figure out where the rooms are, and is going into the rooms to talk to the kids who
24:18were in the boat crash.
24:19No one else is typically allowed in a patient's room other than the next of kin or family.
24:25It's totally inappropriate.
24:27But that tells me that they thought they were powerful enough and intimidating enough that they would be able to
24:34do that and pull it off.
24:39Alec Murdoch was trying to get everyone to change their story.
24:43What Alec wanted at that point was to contain the situation, to control the situation, to his and to Paul's
24:50advantage.
24:50And he didn't want the kids to say anything that would later be taken against Paul because of liability and
24:58because of charges, criminal charges.
25:00Everyone says that Paul was driving the boat.
25:02Morgan Daugherty said she was afraid of Alec Murdoch and asked the nurse to not allow him into her hospital
25:10room.
25:11She said she feared what Alec might do.
25:16The hospital staff says, no, you're not going to do that.
25:20We don't want you walking in.
25:21That is a problem for us.
25:24According to Connor, Alec got to him and was following him as they're stretching him down the hall to take
25:31him into surgery.
25:32And was talking to him and telling him, you know, don't say anything.
25:37We'll take care of you.
25:38We'll take care of this.
25:40We got it.
25:44Alec Murdoch tells Connor Cook he's got an attorney to represent him, to help him.
25:51Alec Murdoch specifically was trying to work behind the scenes to pin the boat accident on Connor to make it
26:01seem as though he was driving and he was at fault.
26:08And nobody would know more about civil liability, criminal liability than Alec Murdoch and his family.
26:16They knew what they stood to lose.
26:19Those two Murdochs were doing damage control for their family while Mallory Beach laid out there in that cold water.
26:35My connection to Mallory was through people who I knew and immediately the next morning started seeing pleas on social
26:44media for help finding her,
26:46alluring the community to, hey, my friend is missing.
26:52The water is not a good friend at this time.
26:56That tide is pulling out.
26:58The way things are starting to look, it's not good.
27:05Crews are continuing to search for a former USC student who went missing over the weekend near Paris Island.
27:11Officials say six people were on a boat when it crashed into a bridge.
27:15The other five people were hurt but are expected to be okay.
27:19The National Center for Missing and Endangered names the sixth missing woman as Mallory Beach.
27:24The tide, wind, there's always a factor.
27:26Water temperature is a factor.
27:31It still gives me chills.
27:33I thought about that child out in that water.
27:38I thought about that pretty smile, that pretty face of that child that was out there somewhere.
27:46We didn't know if we would ever find her.
27:56Anybody that had a boat was going to be out there looking for this young girl.
28:02Everybody wanted to find her.
28:05No matter what it took.
28:07More details about the continuing search for Hampton County, South Carolina teenager, Sean Evans,
28:12went to the boat ramp and brings us the details about the search conditions on the third day.
28:17There is a lot of support out here for the family of the missing woman.
28:20And rescuers are also relaying information to the family as the search continues as often as they can.
28:26The community came together in search efforts for Mallory in leaps and bounds.
28:31It was pretty amazing to see all those folks show up with their personal boats and eager to help and
28:37try to find Mallory.
28:38It was more and more people every day.
28:41Boat crews and dive teams continue to look in the initial search area and beyond as the hours and days
28:47go on.
28:53And because Hampton is the small community, everybody knows everybody, everybody cares about everyone,
29:00anything tragic like that is going to be a big deal.
29:04And that was someone's daughter.
29:10Mallory's parents, they were out there every day.
29:13They wanted to know where their daughter was.
29:16They prayed, they leaned hard on their faith, they leaned hard on their friends.
29:22And you could feel it, that this was just ripping the community apart every day that passed.
29:34Beaufort County Coroner confirms the body of a woman found near the Broad River boat ramp Sunday is Mallory Beach.
29:41It's the conclusion that family and friends of Mallory Beach feared after praying for a week for a miracle that
29:48maybe she had survived that boat crash and would be found alive.
29:53A week goes by and finally some searchers find Mallory's body.
30:01This was about five miles from where the accident happened.
30:05The coroner ruled her cause of death as blunt force trauma and drowning.
30:24Mallory Beach was a sweet child, a loving and caring person.
30:30She was a friend of my niece's.
30:31She was just a beautiful girl and so sweet and appreciative of anything that you do for her.
30:40It just breaks my heart to think about that.
30:45Anthony was so taken with her.
30:47You can see it in the pictures of them together.
30:54To have her ripped from your arms literally in such a violent way and to not even be able to
31:00find her yourself is so damaging to Anthony.
31:11At the funeral, there's this outpouring from the community.
31:18Hundreds of people come and pay tribute just to support the family and let them know how much Mallory meant
31:26to the community.
31:29These people would give everything they have to have Mallory back.
31:34They would.
31:35They would give everything.
31:53I don't think that the Murdoch's knew what was at stake yet, but they knew that there was a snowball
32:00coming down the hill fast.
32:02Paul Murdoch, 19 years old at the time, not legally able to buy or consume alcohol, driving a boat that
32:10belonged to his father, unsupervised, three people injured at least, one person killed.
32:17That is a lot of liability in the eyes of the law.
32:25About a month after the death of Mallory Beach, a lawsuit was filed by the estate of Mallory Beach against
32:35all of the alleged different parties who had a role to play in the death of Mallory Beach.
32:42His father is sued.
32:43His brother is sued.
32:44The convenience store is sued.
32:57At Parker's gas station, one of the things that we see is when Paul goes in to get the alcohol,
33:09he presents his brother Buster's ID, gets the alcohol, and then you see him leave and go towards his boat
33:16again and sort of raise up his arms.
33:18Like, look at what I've been able to pull off.
33:28As the weeks drag on, friends and family of Mallory Beach are wondering if Paul Murdoch is ever going to
33:35face justice in the county where his family has been the law for 100 years.
33:42Residents of Hampton County publicly posted on the memorial page for Mallory Beach that they thought that Paul Murdoch was
33:49responsible for the death of Mallory Beach, that he would never be indicted for the pure fact that he was
33:54a Murdoch.
33:57What I think adds to the perception that Paul is going to get away with this is the extraordinary amount
34:04of time that passes between when this boat crash occurs and mid-April before there are any criminal charges filed.
34:14By that time, the rumor mill and rumors aren't facts, but in this case, the rumors were very much about
34:25what happened and who was supposedly driving, what the general consensus was, who was driving the boat.
34:33Nearly two months passed, that in itself adds to the perception of special treatment and fuels this fire of speculation
34:43that nothing's going to happen to this guy.
34:46Nothing is going to happen.
34:47There's going to be no justice here when it's very evident that somebody needs to be held accountable.
34:56To the surprise of many, Paul is, in fact, indicted on April 18, 2019, nearly two months after the crash.
35:05Once you understand the power of the Murdoch family in that solicitor's office and in that circuit, maybe it's surprising
35:11that he ever was charged.
35:14He is now facing a felony BUI boating under the influence that resulted in death and two BUIs resulting in
35:24great bodily injury.
35:26This is a kid who could be looking at 25 years in jail.
35:44Typically, when someone is showing up in bond court, they are in a jail jumpsuit.
35:51I think the way they handled it was pretty classic.
35:56They took his mugshot in the hallway of the courthouse.
35:59It just showed that he was being treated in a way that didn't reflect what should have happened.
36:07Paul Murdoch is released on bond on his own recognizance.
36:13Even though he was under court order to not participate in the consumption of alcohol, there's video of him being
36:20out in Columbia, South Carolina, after he was indicted, drinking excessively, partying, almost as if he forgot what led to
36:30the death of that young girl.
36:38Paul was, I don't know, he was different.
36:43I observed Paul when he was young.
36:45He was a child that liked to kill little baby animals.
36:51He would take a kitchen knife and kill a lizard or a frog.
36:56Paul Murdoch was around 14 or 15 years old when he started drinking.
37:01And this can be confirmed by his own social media that he put online.
37:05There was allegations of excessive binge drinking that would take place both at the Murdoch family home and the different
37:12properties that they own.
37:14Paul's wild, uncontrollable, erratic, somewhat dangerous personality was exacerbated by his drinking.
37:25Came out when he's drinking.
37:28Morgan, Morgan, Miley, Connor, and Anthony, all talked about how much of a vicious drunk Paul Murdoch was.
37:40Don't discount Paul for one second.
37:43He could do, he could kill anyone, I believe.
37:47In my opinion, he could.
37:55There's college kid drunk, and then there's Paul Murdoch drunk.
37:59He had an alter ego that he would transform into after having drank too much.
38:06Timmy was the name his friends gave to a blackout drunk Paul Murdoch.
38:10And they would say, uh-oh, here comes Timmy.
38:14A lot of people were wary of Timmy because they knew that he would be agitated.
38:19He would want to fight and could not be reasoned with when Timmy appeared.
38:34What was going on on that boat?
38:36The night of the crash was violent.
38:42Fueled by alcohol and the actions of Paul Murdoch.
38:58When the kids leave the Oyster Rose, they don't go back to the river house.
39:02They decide to go downtown.
39:04And it wasn't a mutual decision.
39:06This was Paul who really wanted to go downtown.
39:10Let's go downtown.
39:13There were kids that were fighting it on the boat.
39:15They were saying, no, no, no, I've got to get back.
39:18Like, all of a sudden, this is turning into an adventure that they hadn't signed up for, basically.
39:22But in the end, Paul wins because he's driving the boat.
39:26So he takes them down to the Beaufort day dock where he pulls the boat in.
39:40Paul Murdoch and Conor Cook proceeded to go to Luther's Well and Rare to go drinking.
39:47You see the three girls and Anthony Cook going to the playground and sitting on the swings
39:55that are right at the exit of the public dock there.
40:10Paul and Conor go amble up to the bar.
40:12And what they were doing was taking shots.
40:17So after having drank at the Oyster Roast and then Jaeger shots and Lemon Drop shots,
40:24he was wasted.
40:28They then left, visibly were stumbling, back to the public dock.
40:40The kids start noticing that his hands are doing something strange, like they're opening
40:45up and he's walking with these weird hands.
40:48The splaying of the hands is just that emotion and that anger building up.
40:52And that was a sign that Timmy was coming on board and that he was intoxicated.
41:06And then you have this heartbreaking moment where you see Mallory and Anthony walking towards
41:12the boat.
41:13And Anthony's giving her this big grin and you see her smiling and it's like the last
41:18moment you see Mallory.
41:22I think that is what kind of breaks your heart.
41:27We also know that Anthony, at that moment, is thinking, don't get back on this boat.
41:32They're trying to figure out how to get home.
41:34Now what do we do?
41:36Anthony and Paul had an argument on the dock outside.
41:39Anthony is pleading with Paul to let him drive.
41:42Anthony said, you better let me drive.
41:45You drank too much.
41:46And Paul said, it's my boat.
41:48I'm going to drive.
41:51But when they get on the boat, he is acting drunk.
41:54He's acting erratic.
41:55At one point, one of the kids says he almost hits some of the sailboats.
41:58It's scary.
41:59And they're worried.
42:03And it gets violent.
42:05He's getting into fights with everybody on the boat.
42:09It even gets to the point where he apparently spits on and hits his girlfriend, Morgan.
42:14He decided to strip down to his skivvies and start driving in freezing cold weather in the
42:23middle of February in South Carolina.
42:26They pause in Archer's Creek.
42:30And then he hits the throttle.
42:57Paul is just now about to have his first hearing in court related to the felony charges against
43:04him from that boat crash.
43:06That hearing is scheduled for June 10, 2021.
43:10And this is a big deal.
43:12This is a big development.
43:14Finally, some progress in this case that has garnered so much attention and is so close
43:21to home for so many people in this small, tight-knit community.
43:28What happened next?
43:30Absolutely nobody could have ever seen coming.
43:48I think the police just passed this immediately before my wife and Tom just got mad with me.
43:54Okay.
43:55And are they breathing?
43:57No, ma'am.
43:58No, ma'am.
43:59No, ma'am.
43:59No, ma'am.
43:59No, ma'am.
