00:01In the Andes Mountains, 1,200 years ago, a powerful civilization appeared out of thin air.
00:11The ancient Incas accused them of sorcery.
00:14Do you know anyone that has actually been cursed?
00:19Some believe these were the first Europeans to settle in South America.
00:24Could they really be a tribe of lost warriors from across the Atlantic?
00:29Now the truth about these mysterious people may finally be revealed.
00:34Is this what I think it is?
00:35By the mummies they left behind.
00:37I found something!
00:41I'm archaeologist and mummy expert, Rami Rahmani.
00:45Across the globe, Earth is giving up her dead.
00:48Oh my God, Pedro, look at this!
00:51Thanks to cutting-edge technology, new mummies are unearthed every day.
00:55It's like a luck of Walter Cripe scene.
00:57These mummies hold extraordinary secrets.
01:00Oh my God, what is this?
01:01Priceless.
01:02If you know how to unwrap them.
01:04That changes everything.
01:07This is...
01:09Mummies Unwrapped.
01:21Hundreds of mummies have been discovered in the Peruvian Andes.
01:25Dating back to the time of the Inca.
01:29But unlike the Inca who buried their dead,
01:33These mummies were found entombed in clay statues, hanging off of sheer cliff faces.
01:40Very little is known about the mysterious Cloud People.
01:44They've vanished as suddenly as they appeared.
01:48The secrets of the Cloud People are protected by a powerful mummy's curse,
01:52That's said to claim the life of anyone foolish enough to interfere with their dead.
01:59I've come to Peru to examine these mountain mummies for myself.
02:03And to see if I can finally unwrap the true identity of the Cloud People.
02:14I've arranged special access to the largest collection of mummies in South America.
02:20I'll be examining these Cloud People mummies with the director of the Limbibamba Museum,
02:25Archaeologist and mummy expert, Sonia Güelen.
02:29I obsess over mummies, Sonia.
02:32How much mummies are there in that mummy vault of yours?
02:35Now 230.
02:38Wow.
02:42Look at these, that's wild.
02:47They look so different.
02:52Well, this was a very unique find,
02:54because you don't expect to find mummies in a place that's so, so humid.
03:00Organic material disintegrates here very, very fast.
03:05But these mummies were hiding in these mausoleums.
03:09And where were they?
03:10High up in the mountains.
03:13In isolated places, very difficult to reach.
03:17But this is a place that faced a lagoon.
03:20And a water source is also a place that they connected religiously as a place of origin.
03:29These mummies were discovered in six cliffside tubes,
03:33300 feet above nearby Laguna de los Condores.
03:37In contrast to Egyptian mummies,
03:39whose entrails were removed through an incision along their left side.
03:43These mummies organs were removed through the anus.
03:46Their hands were then placed near their faces.
03:49And they were seated upright.
03:52Allowing their bodily fluids to continue draining.
03:55This helped dry the mummy in this humid climate.
03:59We have prepared a case to show you.
04:03Wow.
04:04We can see that the rest of the body is mummified,
04:07but because this area was exposed,
04:10the soft tissue is lost in this area.
04:12This damage happened when people were looting.
04:16That makes sense.
04:17There is a machete cut here.
04:19Oh, I see it.
04:20And they explored this body and tried to open,
04:26so they could see if there were any jewellery.
04:29So we didn't find the artefacts.
04:32This was looted.
04:34Is there a big looting problem?
04:36Certainly.
04:37Very big.
04:40Looting and tomb raiding is a problem all over the world.
04:43Mummies like these would have had metal artefacts wrapped up with them.
04:48These artefacts could have given us valuable insights into their owners' ancestry.
04:54How hard is it to get any DNA samples from these mummies?
04:58They have been able to recover DNA from most of them.
05:02But this has been ongoing for the last five years.
05:05It's a long process to recover the DNA.
05:09It's a long process to test whether the DNA is scientifically sound.
05:15It's not contaminated.
05:17That's the problem with DNA is that some people think DNA is a straightforward answer.
05:21You get the DNA from the mummy and you know everything from that.
05:24But what they don't know is that a lot of times it's very hard to get sound DNA in the
05:28first place.
05:29And then you have to figure out who you compare this DNA to.
05:33So it's ongoing.
05:36Using DNA to trace the origin of a mummy isn't an exact science at best.
05:41Bones and teeth provide DNA samples, but it's DNA that has been decomposing for centuries.
05:47A sample is almost always degraded and contaminated.
05:52It is then further damaged during the unavoidable lab's extraction process and analysis.
05:58It's clear why the DNA tests of these mummies have been inconclusive.
06:03What were they like?
06:05Well, the Chachapoya were people that were very connected to their territory
06:09and they defended it furiously against the Inca.
06:15They were warriors?
06:15Yes.
06:16That's very interesting.
06:18The placement of these mummies high up among cliffs near water is intriguing.
06:24It is unlike any other burial practice in this region.
06:28To learn more about who these people were, I need the equivalent of eyewitness accounts.
06:35And that means I'm heading to Lima.
06:48I'm heading to the National Library to meet a historian and researcher named Felipe Porto Carrero.
06:55He's an expert on Peru's indigenous cultures and has studied the Chachapoyas for years.
07:01Here, Remy.
07:02Finally, I get to meet you.
07:03How are you doing, my friend?
07:04How are you doing?
07:05Very well.
07:05I have so many questions and I know you might have some answers.
07:09Yeah, I mean, the Chachapoyans are a mystery.
07:11They were different from classic Andean sort of cultures.
07:15They buried their mummies inside sarcophagus, inside like caskets.
07:19That's different from all the Incas?
07:20Yes, they're completely different.
07:22I mean, Incas do it underground.
07:24And the Chachapoyas were trying to protect their mummies with some sort of spell, you know, so that anyone that
07:30would even come near to them would suffer the consequences.
07:35And did people believe that if they get anywhere close to their mummies, that they would be cursed?
07:41Definitely.
07:43The Chachapoyas were a regional power in the Northern Andes of Peru from the 7th century AD through the mid
07:50-16th century.
07:51Their only significant rivals in the area were the Incas, starting in the 15th century.
07:59The Incas, the most feared civilization in South America.
08:04Did the Incas themselves fear the Chachapoyan people?
08:09I mean, I would say the Incas didn't fear anybody, you know, but with the Chachapoyans, they were cautious.
08:17We have this ancient manuscript that gives us decent detail on who they were.
08:22I mean, if you're interested.
08:24Absolutely.
08:25Let's go.
08:27It's called Crónicas del Perú, or Chronicles about Peru.
08:30It was written by Pedro Cieza de León.
08:33Pedro Cieza de León's four-volume work chronicled the local geography, plants, and animals of Peru.
08:42It is considered the most credible source of its time.
08:46But most important to my investigation, it is a first-hand description of the local people.
08:53The description on where the Chachapoyans came from, fortress-like buildings, huge up high in the mountains, you know, like
09:00a foggy territory.
09:01They gave them the cloud people's name because they just literally looked at them coming from the clouds.
09:06Yes. Pedro Cieza describes Chachapoyas as tall, they were whiter, or light-skinned, and they were the most beautiful.
09:15Tall, white, and beautiful. Beautiful is relative, but they were tall and white.
09:21Yes.
09:23Did the Spanish describe any other culture they saw here?
09:27Anywhere close to how they described the cloud people?
09:31I wouldn't say so.
09:32They look completely different than anyone else in the region.
09:35And we have no clue where they came from.
09:39The detailed descriptions of this primary source clearly point to an ancient people who had completely different features than any
09:47other people ever seen in the New World.
09:50When I approached to this book, I was hoping to find answers, but I ended up even with more questions
09:56and with no idea where to start now.
10:05Filippi was absolutely right. I did end up with many more questions after looking at those documents.
10:10But now, I am more motivated than ever to go deep into the Amazonas to find answers about this mystical
10:17tribe.
10:17But first, I gotta do some shopping.
10:21As always, a little local preparation is key.
10:28This is the biggest market in Lima, Peru. The Gomorrah Market.
10:34It began as a textile market more than 120 years ago, and has grown to include more than 20,000
10:41stalls.
10:42They sell all kinds of things, including exactly what I need for my expedition, high up into the Andes Mountains.
10:50These are coca leaves. You know, the ones they make cocaine from. Except this is legal.
10:57Coca leaves have been used as medicine in Peru since 3000 BC.
11:02They help reduce the nausea and headache of the altitude sickness that many people experience above 8,000 feet.
11:10And I will be travelling to 10,000 feet.
11:13It's the ultimate medicine for altitude.
11:17I'm ready.
11:19The more exotic side of the market is an area that sells items related to black magic.
11:24Even today, local Peruvians still believe in curses.
11:31Some believe that the most powerful curses came from the Cloud people, whose sorcerers used them to protect their mummies.
11:41Someone told me about a local shaman here, who does some ceremonial protection before you go deep into the Amazonas,
11:50to protect you from the curse.
11:54Better to be safe than sorry.
11:58Hola.
11:59How are you?
12:01Do you have anything for the curse of the mummies?
12:25I'm being protected right now.
12:30Wow.
12:35Thank you very much, now I can go looking for mummies
12:43With a stash of coca leaves and a shaman's protection from any curse I'm heading to Kuala
12:48The largest Cheshapoyan city ever found I want to know what this location might tell me about the cloud people's
12:55origins
13:03Kuala is the crowning achievement of the cloud people
13:06It has a massive fortress-like stone structure that is one of the most impressive in the Americas
13:17We are literally on the edge of a cliff
13:19I can't even see how far down it goes
13:23Most of Kuala was built around 900 AD
13:27More than 300 years before the Incas became the region's superpower
13:31Okay
13:33We are five minutes away from Kuala right now
13:36Where I'm going to meet my independent researcher Brian Forster
13:41Kuala is the place to start
13:43It does have the crown achievement of the cloud people
13:46It's a massive fortress that is one of the most impressive structures in the Americas
13:53The final approach is a muddy trail
13:56And this time of the year my best option is to reach it on horseback
14:01The engineering skills required to build such a remote fortress
14:05At an elevation of about 10,000 feet
14:08Are just not seen anywhere else in this region
14:12Wow
14:13I did not expect that
14:30I'm in Peru
14:31On a mission to uncover the unexplained origins of the cloud people
14:34They were described as tall and white
14:37Different from any other people in South America
14:40And their mummies were preserved in highly unusual ways
14:47Wow
14:49Kuala is the largest city of the cloud people ever found
14:52I want to investigate what these ruins might tell me about where this mysterious tribe
14:57Could have come from
15:00Based on the recommendation of my friend and fellow explorer Josh Gates
15:04I've arranged to meet researcher Brian Forster
15:06He's an expert on megalithic structures throughout South America
15:13I cannot tell you how excited I am about this place
15:1615 acre structure that apparently the cloud people lived in
15:20And there's enough stone here to build the great pyramid of Giza three times
15:26Let me show you something over here
15:27Please do
15:28Wow
15:31Wow
15:31Look at that
15:33This is the entrance of the whole thing
15:34Yeah
15:35Yeah
15:35That's the main entrance there
15:39So I know we can't get inside because it's been falling apart
15:43Yeah
15:43But why did you bring you here?
15:46What was here?
15:47What was the last piece of evidence that you want to show me?
15:49Well, there was a very specific symbol of two serpents in a spiral
15:55And so that's kind of unique to this location
16:00Serpents in a spiral is not common to pre-Columbian civilizations of this area
16:05Normally a serpent is just that kind of design
16:07But here it's a curve
16:09It's almost as though the head is swallowing the tail
16:12But why?
16:13Why is a serpent swallowing its tail so significant?
16:17It's very similar to symbols that we see in Europe
16:21The serpent swallowing its tail is a Celtic symbol
16:26Wow
16:27And the unfortunate thing is that where it's located is now on the ground
16:32So this is under a pile of rubble
16:34It is really unfortunate that this serpent symbol has collapsed
16:38And is there anything else that you could show me that would help support your theater?
16:42Mm-hmm
16:42Let's go
16:4930 million to 40 million cubic feet
16:51Look at this
16:52Yeah
16:53This is glorious
16:56I am blown away
17:01What did they use this part of the building for?
17:04Well, this could be like the royal noble center
17:07And notice how many of the buildings are round
17:10They are really unique
17:12Circular structures are very uncommon in pre-Columbian America
17:15Here we have 400 plus of them
17:18So that means that no known Andean civilization built this
17:24The only other round buildings that people lived in from the Iron Age were the Celtics
17:30That's right
17:30The Cloud People's Ruins are similar to Celtic structures in Europe
17:35That were still being built at the same time
17:39Builders in both places cut and placed stones of a similar size
17:43To construct bases of a similar diameter and height
17:49And they both finished each structure with a thatched roof
17:55And no other structure in South America has such a design
18:00What you're saying is that the Chachapuyas, the Cloud People, came from Europe?
18:07I believe so
18:10Wow
18:11There is no other record that the Europeans would have been anywhere close to here at this time
18:16Not according to the academics
18:18But I listen to the oral traditions of the people who lived here
18:22The Cloud People completely predate the Vikings by hundreds of years
18:27And you think they came from Europe?
18:29Exactly
18:30Because currents from the Strait of Gibraltar could take you right to the mouth of the Amazon
18:39Wow
18:41The Celtics were an ancient seafaring culture
18:44And their empire stretched from Scotland to Spain
18:47It is very possible that a Celtic vessel could have been caught in the Atlantic's powerful current
18:53And carried hundreds of miles to the mouth of the Amazon River
18:57Stranded, this rogue group could have traveled to the river's source
19:01Until they hit the Andes Mountains
19:03In this uninhabited place
19:05They could have built and defended a fortress high up in the clouds
19:09This would make the Cloud People the first ever Europeans to settle in the New World
19:15Predating the Vikings' arrival in North America by 300 years
19:20Here at their fortress, Quelup
19:22Numerous Cloud People bodies were discovered within the city walls
19:26And both cultures wrapped heirlooms up with the dead
19:29But at Quelup, any evidence that might prove a connection between the Cloud People and the Cels
19:34Was looted and lost
19:37Long ago
19:43But if I can find a tomb that hasn't been discovered
19:46Hasn't been looted
19:47There may be still relics and other evidence that could prove that Cloud People actually came from Europe
19:53I'll need some help to focus a search that will include thousands of square miles of virgin cloud forests
20:01I'm on my way to meet Pedro Cordova
20:04He's a local explorer and a researcher working on the Chachapoyan culture
20:08And trying to find their undiscovered ruins
20:13I believe that in this case, the Cloud People's powerful mummy curse might actually help me
20:20Pedro!
20:21Hey!
20:22Hey, man!
20:24Fear of a curse may have kept looters away
20:26And locals might know the areas that most people would want to avoid
20:32From what I read, the Cloud People were sorcerers
20:36And they claim that they put a curse on their mummies to protect them from anything
20:41I know that local Peruvians do believe in the mummy curse
20:46It's antimonia
20:47It's this curse
20:48And it usually happens once somebody gets closer to some sort of ruin remains
20:57Mummy curses captivate people's imaginations
21:00But they are rooted in scientific fact
21:03Recent lab studies have revealed that ancient mummies in tombs can carry toxic mold
21:08Which can infect anyone that touches the dead
21:13Do you know anyone that has actually been cursed?
21:16There's a guy, his name is Jorge and he had all the symptoms
21:19Do you think he remembers or knows the place that he's been cursed at?
21:24I'm pretty sure he does
21:25That's something that never will go away from his mind
21:28That's perfect
21:28I want to know where the curse is and I want to go there
21:36Hello Jorge
21:44Can you explain to me what happened?
22:22No, no, no, no
22:22All the local doctors couldn't explain what he had
22:24He decided that doctors don't have the answer
22:27And he went to a shaman
22:28And the shaman told him
22:29To describe the exact spot
22:31He went to when the cattle stopped
22:36And he described the exact spot
22:37And the shaman told him
22:39I know what's wrong with you
22:40This is a very dangerous spot
22:42That is the curse
22:45The antemonia
22:47According to the shaman
22:50It's almost always an indication
22:51Of nearby cloud people tombs and ruins
22:55Jorge, where exactly was that spot?
22:59Sí, porque llegamos al cielo ya
23:01Porque el cielo es alto
23:05¿And this man?
23:08Right here?
23:09Sí
23:10Ahí me dio la antemonia
23:11I know what Jorge is talking about
23:13It's far away, it's a long journey
23:15It's definitely Chachapoya people
23:17It's up in the forest, up near the clouds
23:19Up in the sky as he's describing
23:21Can we get there?
23:23Yeah, but it's a very dangerous place
23:25Take me there
23:39I'm heading into an area of the Peruvian Cloud Forest
23:41Where locals believe a powerful curse
23:44Is protecting the mummies of an ancient tribe
23:47I'm hoping to find out whether the mysterious cloud people
23:50Could really have been their first Europeans to arrive in South America
23:54More than 600 years before the Spaniards did
24:02Apparently the only way to get to the location
24:05Is using horses that Pedro is prepping behind me right now
24:08That is the location
24:09All the local Peruvians believe is cursed
24:11Even Pedro himself is very uncomfortable going up there
24:15But that is exactly why I need to go up there
24:18My only chance of finding evidence to know about the origins of the cloud people
24:21Is to find an undisturbed mummy
24:26Ready, Pedro?
24:27We're ready, are you?
24:28Yeah, which one is mine?
24:30Sounds great
24:32Grey is my favourite colour
24:48Normally, archaeology is digging down into the dirt
24:50To unlock the secrets of history
24:53This is taking us up
24:55Thousands of feet in elevation
24:58To maybe unlock the secrets of the Chachapoyans
25:08Pedro, my horse is acting up
25:11The horses are obviously bothered by something
25:15It's a sign
25:16They want to go back
25:18Most likely, the high altitude
25:21Hey, Robbie, I don't think these horses are going to go anywhere
25:23We're going to have to hike
25:24Okay, let's get on
25:25The solution
25:26No horses
25:27We're walking
25:33Some Chachapoyan sites have recently been found
25:35In this general area
25:38Based on the information Jorge gave us
25:40We'll have to navigate this thick jungle
25:42To get near the ruins Jorge believes gave him the curse
25:46The Antimony
25:48And that's exactly where we'll look
25:50For an unlooted tomb
25:51And an undisturbed mummy
25:57Wow
26:11I've got to tell you Pedro
26:13This is very promising
26:15Pedro, be really careful
26:16It's very slippery
26:17Do you have to hold you?
26:18Yeah
26:20I've got you
26:21Okay
26:21Yeah
26:24Nope
26:26Nope
26:27Yeah, I've got you
26:29Don't let go, okay?
26:30Yeah
26:31You alright?
26:32No
26:34I've got you
26:38Let's keep going
26:39Maybe this place is cursed
26:54Rami, hold on
26:55We're getting closer
26:57Okay, so
26:59Curses are real in Peru
27:00And we've got to pay respect to Pachamama
27:02Pachamama is Mother Earth
27:04You will take your hats off
27:05And give some sort of gift
27:08So I'm going to pull out some of the coca leaves
27:11And I will translate you
27:12What I will say to Pachamama, okay?
27:16Gracias Pachamama, Linda
27:18Por permitirnos estar acá
27:21Te pedimos permiso
27:22Te agradecemos por todos los conocimientos
27:25Te pedimos por nuestra seguridad
27:28Por la seguridad de Rami
27:29Por mi seguridad
27:32Y nada
27:32Muchas gracias
27:34Thank you Pachamama
27:48This is the thickest I've ever been in
27:53Watch out with your step
27:59Look at this
28:00Is this what I think it is?
28:07Be careful, Pedro
28:09Do you see those symbols?
28:12Wow
28:13Those are the same exact symbols
28:15That were there in Kuala
28:18Look at that
28:20This is amazing
28:21This is Cloud People Ruins
28:22This is it?
28:23It is
28:24Those symbols represent authority
28:25So most likely we are
28:27On a place where somebody with power lived
28:29We may be very lucky to find here
28:31An item we're looking for
28:33Let's try to get in
28:36These round structures
28:38Are almost identical to what we saw at Kuala
28:41I find these symbols of royalty
28:43The eyes of the Puma
28:44Encouraging
28:45My hope
28:46Is to find a metal artifact
28:48Whose makeup and craftsmanship
28:50Reveal whether there is a link
28:51Between the Cloud People
28:53And the Celtic warriors
29:12We are now just over
29:149,000 feet
29:16And I'm definitely feeling the altitude
29:24The low oxygen environment means I have to breathe more
29:26To get the same amount of air
29:28My heart rate is higher
29:29And my head is starting to hurt
29:34Pedro, look at this
29:36Do you see this?
29:37Wow
29:38Look
29:47It looks deep
29:50Pedro, this is very promising
29:52This looks very similar
29:53To what you would find in a tomb or a mausoleum
29:56It starts with a shaft like that
29:58You go all the way in
29:59And it ends up leading to a burial chamber
30:01I'm going in
30:13I can barely fit in here
30:16Some Celts buried their dead in what are called
30:18Wedge tombs
30:20The walls of such chambers
30:22Narrow towards the end
30:23And the stones we're seeing here
30:25Would serve as slabs for the roof
30:27Of the wedge tomb
30:29The entrance to such tombs
30:31Always face towards the setting sun
30:33The west
30:35How is it all looking over there?
30:38It's looking dark, man
30:42I can't see anything
30:44There's a ton of spiders here, Pedro
31:01I see the end of this tunnel
31:17I see the light
31:24Wow
31:25Look at that
31:26Pedro
31:27Pedro
31:28I'm out of scope
31:51I see the light
31:54High up in the Peruvian Andes
31:56I'm looking for a cloud people tomb
31:58That hasn't been looted
32:00I believe their mummies
32:01Could provide me with the evidence
32:03That shows that the cloud people
32:04Could have been the first Europeans
32:06To arrive in the new world
32:08Hundreds of years earlier
32:10Than previously thought
32:14Look at that
32:16Wow
32:18I've just discovered a human skull
32:20At the other end of the tunnel
32:22Oh my god, Pedro
32:24This is amazing
32:26Look
32:27Wow
32:27You see the markings right here?
32:29Yep
32:30These are all proof
32:31That this is an ancient
32:33Either Incan or Chasapoya
32:35Most likely cloud people
32:36Mummy
32:38This is very, very exciting
32:40Having a skull like this here
32:44Is a great clue for us
32:47Wow
32:50Antimonia
32:51Unlike the rest of the curses
32:52Around the world
32:53Antimonia is an actual
32:54Real disease
32:55It could be from an ancient
32:57Mold that grows on the mummy
33:00But Jorge's symptoms
33:01Were definitely real
33:03Whether this was the curse
33:05Or not
33:05Whether it was
33:06An actual disease or not
33:07I should be careful
33:10Also
33:12Moving archaeology
33:13From its place
33:14I have to be very careful
33:15And I have to know
33:16Exactly where it was
33:17So I can put it back
33:18Exactly where it was
33:19Just so
33:20No one would ever
33:21Miss any clues
33:24Wow
33:25Look at this
33:27This is very likely
33:28An ancient mummy
33:31We should keep looking
33:32Around here
33:33Absolutely
33:35The Celtics
33:36Were at the Iron Age
33:37If this skeleton was
33:39Scaltech
33:39We're very likely
33:41Would find an Iron
33:42Artifact
33:43That was buried with it
33:44Let's do this
33:46My metal detector
33:47Would let us know
33:48If there are artifacts
33:49Near this find
33:50That can provide
33:51Additional clues
33:52About this skull
33:56Pedro
33:58So all that dirt
34:01Just
34:02Just
34:02Just
34:02Just
34:02Just
34:02Just
34:02Just
34:02Just
34:07Just
34:07Just
34:10What is it
34:11It burns
34:12I got
34:13Beto
34:13Something
34:13It's
34:14Ortiga
34:14Very
34:15Very itchy
34:15What is that
34:16It's gonna burn
34:17It's a plant
34:17It's a weed
34:18That burns you
34:24It's on fire
34:25All this
34:26All this weed
34:26We have burning plants
34:27All around us
34:28And you mentioned this now
34:29Sorry about that
34:30How long has it lasted
34:32Could last up to 30 minutes
34:33Just don't scratch it
34:34Just wipe it carefully
34:35And don't touch anything else
34:37Because you're gonna pass it on
34:38You gotta be careful
34:40I will be leaving
34:40This cloud people skull here
34:42And report this site
34:43To the Peruvian authorities
34:47But it is evident
34:48That there are no
34:49Undisturbed tombs here
34:54The cloud people
34:55Place their royal mummies
34:57In sarcophagi
34:57High up on the cliffs
34:59Near their cities
35:00The skull we found
35:02Could have been washed down
35:03By the heavy rains
35:04And erosion from the cliffs above
35:06So the only way forward
35:08And the next place to look
35:09Is up
35:13Pedro, do you see this?
35:15Right there?
35:17Oh yeah
35:17That could very well be
35:19A burial chamber
35:20Let me get a closer look
35:22That's the drone
35:27This way we can
35:28Get closer
35:30Look at it
35:31And if it's worth it
35:33We get there
36:01Oh my god
36:02Do you see this?
36:03This is our sarcophagi
36:05Look at that
36:06Look at this
36:08It's an absolutely incredible sight
36:10To see 13 sarcophagi
36:12With their cloud people art
36:15Right there
36:15A thousand years ago
36:17They were able to do that
36:22Do you see this?
36:23Is that a hole?
36:25What is it?
36:26I think it's a hole
36:28Oh no
36:30Looters
36:30We saw these 13 sarcophagi
36:34That are identical
36:36To the ones in the museum
36:37They look like cloud people's
36:39Art and sarcophagi
36:40They are looted
36:42Someone has been there before
36:43Thieves have completely busted
36:45Into these sarcophagi
36:46And had stolen the mummies
36:48And probably everything else
36:50Pedro, where else?
36:54So the higher status
36:55You get in this culture
36:58The higher you will get buried
37:00So let's keep looking higher
37:02The higher the better
37:06We are now at 10,000 feet
37:09I don't think we're going to find
37:10Anything else here
37:15Wait
37:15Look at this
37:18That's a waterfall
37:20When I was in Limabamba Museum
37:21Talking to Sonia
37:22She said that's the prime place
37:25In front of a lake
37:26Where water is
37:27High on the cliff
37:29And that would be
37:30The best hiding spot
37:31Because if there's a waterfall
37:32Right in front of a cave
37:35Then most likely
37:36There's no looters
37:37That were even able
37:38To reach there
37:42I think we should go
37:43To the waterfall
37:43Let's go
38:02Look at that
38:04Wow
38:07That's exactly what we saw
38:08On the drone
38:09In the middle of it
38:10If we go all the way down
38:12We could probably find
38:13Multiple caves
38:14That the Chachapoyans
38:15Would have used
38:15A thousand years ago
38:17As a burial place
38:18The only way to get there
38:19Is to follow the water
38:20And in order to do that
38:22We're going to need a whole team
38:23We're going to need ropes
38:24It's going to be more complex
38:26Than what you think
38:26Well no one said
38:27It's going to be easy
38:29This might be one of the most
38:31Dangerous locations
38:32I've ever tried to reach
38:34But difficult to access places
38:36Are least likely to be looted
38:38And the most likely
38:39To have a fight
38:52As much as I hope
38:54To find a cloud people too
38:55My curiosity
38:57Once again
38:58It's putting me
38:59In an extremely dangerous position
39:08Wait, wait, wait, wait
39:10I can't get a grip
39:10Wait
39:11Wait
39:12Wait
39:12Wait
39:13Where both feet
39:14Where?
39:14Go back
39:16There's no place
39:18To put your feet
39:20Go back
39:21Faster
39:22Faster
39:23Faster
39:25Faster
39:27Faster
39:27Faster
39:30Ah
39:31Ah
39:36Mind the people
39:37I will do this
39:38The waterfall
39:39It's very slippery
39:41There's no place
39:43To put your feet
39:45So you end up
39:46Flying down
39:49There's no sign of a cave
39:53Apparently there's four more dips like that
39:57And the best case scenario
39:59Is that I live
40:02That is more steep
40:15We are equipped with the latest in modern mountaineering equipment
40:19So how could the cloud people have accomplished this 500 or more years ago?
40:25We know they moved giant boulders to build their structures high up in the mountains
40:29And I believe if they could do that
40:31They could have handled these waterfalls even with the heavy lows
40:37That's a cave
40:38That's a full-on cave
40:40It's deep
40:41It is exactly the perfect spot
40:45Where the Cheshire plains would have done it
40:50After days of exploring the rainforest and thousands of vertical feet up and down
40:55This cave looks incredibly promising
41:05When I'm in a cave like this
41:07I'm looking for generally a flat horizontal surface
41:10That is more likely to have had human activity
41:15I'm also always on the lookout for bats and snakes
41:34It's possible that I've gotten all this wrong
41:37But I don't see anything
41:49My bones empty
41:55There are so many bones in here
41:58All human bones
42:00About seven skulls
42:02This seems to be a full family
42:05Buried together in one place
42:07And they're completely destroyed
42:09Wrapping everywhere
42:10I could see moss all over the bones
42:15This is an undisturbed tomb
42:18Only disturbed by the waterfall
42:20But unlooted
42:22The bones are old and dry
42:24And don't have any mummified flesh on them
42:26So I'm not really concerned about the antimony at this site
42:31The curse has probably kept this a secret for a thousand years
42:35But this can tell us
42:37Where the cloud people actually came from
42:41This is absolutely incredible
42:47What an amazing feeling to have
42:49Repelled from a mountain
42:50From one waterfall to the other
42:52From searching the ruins
42:54From going against the curse
42:55To just finally
42:57Find something like that
43:00Searching among the cliffs
43:02Near a body of water
43:03Close to the cloud people ruins
43:05Has paid off
43:06And forensic tests of these bones
43:08Discovered here today
43:09Have led to astonishing results
43:12These cloud people bodies
43:14Were afflicted with tuberculosis
43:16This means
43:17That a cloud people disease
43:18Was present here in South America
43:21More than 600 years
43:23Before the arrival of the Spaniards
43:26And if one more cloud people tomb
43:28That hasn't been looted
43:29Or damaged by centuries of water
43:31Can be found
43:32It will provide additional evidence
43:35We will know once and for all
43:37Whether the mysterious cloud people of Peru
43:39Were in fact
43:41The first Europeans
43:42To arrive in South America
43:43We will know
43:45Because the cloud people's mummies
43:47Were the key
43:48To unlocking the secrets of the past
43:54Stay with us
43:54I'm going to find that
43:54The next one
43:54First
43:54And for all the legends
43:56Is that we know
