00:17You
00:23Who are we
00:27What are we I should say as human beings
00:30Are we intrinsically good or evil
00:36What could be termed evil in you
00:38And could be termed good
00:41But I think anybody's capable of evil
00:43Given the right and wrong circumstances
00:46Because all we care about is getting fucking rich
00:48I could see the allure of it
00:51I could see the power
00:53I can even understand the passion
00:58This is the struggle
01:03Yeah I struggle with it all the time
01:07Please allow me to introduce myself
01:10I'm a man of wealth
01:14The life of Martin Scorsese is the stuff of legend
01:17May some of the most compelling feature films in movie history
01:20Leading poet anthropologist of the contemporary landscape
01:24I was around with Jesus Christ
01:27It has mushroomed into one of the hardest fought battles in movie history
01:31Is the film blasphemy or an affirmation of faith?
01:34Do filmmakers have a right to make a film like this?
01:38Shots have been fired at President Reagan
01:41John W. Hinckley may have been trying to act out the plot of the movie Taxi Driver
01:47Is there a fascination on your part for violence?
01:51Scorsese
01:52I'm a filmmaker
01:53I make movies
01:53Some of the people making news this morning
01:56Movie director Martin Scorsese
01:58Our guest tonight is Martin Scorsese
02:00Marty
02:01Marty
02:02Marty
02:02Dad
02:02Martin
02:03Marty
02:04Mr. Scorsese
02:08There is only one Marty Scorsese
02:10And he is a cornerstone of this entire art form
02:14There's been nobody like him
02:15There will never be anybody like him again
02:17Do you love her?
02:21Do you?
02:23Do you?
02:24Karen
02:25He's the master of exploring the dark side of the human condition
02:31Because these things are within all of us
02:38We need to talk about this darkness
02:40We need to bring it to light
02:43Don't do it!
02:47Marty is one of the field directors who understands
02:51There are fundamental questions that you have to ask
02:58What is good?
02:59What is beautiful?
03:00What is sin?
03:01What is virtue?
03:02What is justice?
03:03What is mercy?
03:04Why am I here?
03:06How must I act?
03:07What can I know?
03:11Marty is a saint sinner
03:14There's something saintly in him
03:17In the sense that he asked the questions
03:19Like God asked the questions
03:20Jesus asked the questions
03:23You once said
03:24I am a gangster and I am a priest
03:26I said to Gore Vidal one day
03:28There's only one of two things you can be
03:29I never heard of
03:30You can either be a priest or a gangster
03:31He said you became both
03:45Did you slate?
03:48Nope
03:48The slate
03:49Okay
03:49Oh God you need slates
03:51Oh we're not rolling
03:52I know
03:53You need slates
03:54But first you gotta roll
03:56Then you get the slate
03:57Okay
03:59Marker
04:00Second marker
04:01Excuse me
04:01That's a technical term Rebecca
04:03Thank you so much
04:11What's your first memory?
04:13Oh
04:13Being fed in a high chair actually
04:16Really?
04:17So early
04:18Yeah
04:21We lived in a small Italian enclave in Corona, Queens
04:27People may see photographs and they think
04:29Well he came from a place where there was greenery
04:31And that sort of thing
04:31But in reality
04:33What had happened was that
04:35My grandparents
04:36They all came over around 1910
04:38From Sicily
04:39And they wound up in the Lower East Side
04:44My mother was born at 232 Elizabeth Street
04:46My father was born across the street in 241 Elizabeth Street
04:52And they had maybe ten people
04:54Living in three and a half rooms
04:57And you had that in Italian-American
04:58And my mother explains how they live
05:00So my aunt occupied the bedroom
05:02The kitchen was in the middle
05:05And my mother, father and the children were in the litter
05:07Three rooms, worse than that
05:08Three rooms
05:09The bathroom was in the hallways
05:10You know, in those tenements
05:12That's the way it was
05:13We were lucky to have it in the hallway
05:15Some tenements had them in the backyards
05:19They got married very young
05:21The roof scene of the marriage in Raging Bull
05:24Is based on their wedding
05:25Because it was so hot
05:26They went up on the roof
05:27Their eye was not to live there
05:29Their eye was to get out
05:31So they moved to Corona, Queens
05:35Kind of a sub-working class area
05:38But at least it was a little house
05:39Where there was some grass
05:41There was a little grass
05:42There was a tree in the backyard
05:44There was a little yard
05:46My brother was born
05:47And then I was born
05:52Around the corner was
05:53My mother's parents
05:56And my cousins would live down the block
05:58My mother's sisters were there
06:01In my mind, in child's eye
06:04Corona for me was like paradise
06:10I think, didn't I meet you in kindergarten?
06:13Well, you're from Elizabeth Street
06:14So naturally
06:15Elizabeth, no, I met you
06:16It was 1950
06:17We moved back
06:18Okay, you came back
06:19We were ostracized from Corona
06:21They had this thing going
06:22I don't know exactly what happened
06:23All I know is my father
06:24Had to fight the landlord
06:27In the street
06:28Wow
06:29Yeah
06:33The landlord got into a major fight
06:36With my father
06:37Which I witnessed
06:39A physical fight?
06:40Oh yeah
06:41No, these are
06:44I don't come from some
06:46These are people who live on the edge
06:49I remember violence
06:52There was an axe involved
06:53I remember seeing an axe
06:54I remember my mother's sister
06:55Breaking it up
06:56She got in there
06:57She said, don't hit my brother-in-law
06:59But I remember very well
07:00The extraordinary trauma
07:02Of the whole thing
07:06It's a strange thing
07:08I mean, it's hard to talk about here
07:10Because that world
07:11People, it was very unlikely
07:13They could trust government
07:15Institutions
07:15City Hall, in any way
07:17Particularly if they're not Italian
07:19Or if they were Italian
07:20Or not Sicilian
07:23And so, even if you're not
07:25A person of crime
07:26The crime families
07:28Whatever they are
07:29I didn't know such things existed
07:30I just knew there were
07:31These powerful people around us
07:34They were the ones who were like
07:35Like, I guess
07:36An old ancient village
07:38Where the village elder
07:40Would help settle issues
07:44Apparently, the landlord
07:45He had his certain people
07:48And my father had his
07:49And they all talked it out
07:50And we lost
07:52We were cast out of paradise
07:56Right
07:57Cast out
08:01We were thrown back into the tenements
08:15The only place he could go back home to
08:17Was the room he was born in
08:19241 Elizabeth Street
08:21We lived with our grandmother and grandfather
08:23In the three or four rooms
08:24Where everybody bunched together
08:27And all the other Scorseses
08:29Wore around
08:29You see, in Corona
08:31My mother's side of the family
08:32Had a sense of humor about themselves
08:34My father's family's
08:38Everybody had a problem with
08:40My brother Frank
08:40Everybody
08:41Always a kid running about
08:43Causing mischief
08:45People would complain
08:46You know, like
08:47Charlie, you let your kid do that
08:48For God's sakes
08:49Look at him
08:50Oh, for God's sakes
08:50And people would criticize
08:51So he'd get up
08:52And punish the kid right there
08:54For everybody
08:54It was extraordinarily tense
08:58Eventually, we found rooms down the block
09:01However, the neighborhood
09:03It was very different from Corona
09:06Behavior and the tone of it
09:08Was radically different
09:11Radically
09:12These are the kids I'm going to have to hang out with
09:14They were running and throwing garbage pail cubs at each other
09:16Fighting in the streets
09:20People coming out and chasing them
09:22We were pretty much on the Bowery
09:25The old Bowery
09:26With the derelicts
09:27And the colon bums
09:29In Lionel Rogeson's film
09:30On the Bowery
09:32I know some of them
09:33I grew up with them
09:34Because when they were sober
09:35They worked
09:36In the grocery store
09:37Or, you know, vegetables
09:39That sort of thing
09:39Loading stuff
09:40So we knew them
09:41When they were drunk
09:42It was different
09:43You go downstairs
09:44And they're struggling
09:46Along the street
09:47It was like
09:47Night of the Living Dead
09:50And so it became
09:51A place of fear
09:56And worse
09:58I had contracted asthma
10:00When I was three years old
10:01And the asthma was serious
10:06You just think
10:07You're going to suffocate
10:07I remember that late at night
10:09Trying to get one extra breath
10:12And feeling like
10:13You were just going to pass out
10:14So you just pull one more breath
10:17If you try one more
10:17Try one more
10:19A couple of times
10:20To open up my sinuses
10:21They made a tent
10:23And inside the tent
10:24Was steam
10:26So you're sitting there
10:29In the dark
10:31The medicine was constant
10:33Just remember being
10:34Shielded from everything
10:37One who had to be protected
10:40Can I just say one thing?
10:41Thank God for asthma
10:43He was cooped up
10:46We couldn't go outside
10:48He wanted to play
10:49He wanted to get out
10:50Especially when it was snow
10:52He wanted to get out
10:53And play in the snow
10:54Like other kids
10:54But he couldn't
10:55He used to watch
10:55From behind the window
10:58In the front
10:58Third floor front
11:00And I look out the window
11:01And see
11:02You know
11:03The world below
11:04You know
11:04I've been always looking
11:05Out the window
11:05That's why I like
11:06High angle shots
11:07Seriously
11:08It's like a fresco
11:10That come into life
11:12If he ever went
11:13To the apartment
11:13There were old windows
11:15With small panes
11:16So he has to watch
11:18Pain by pain
11:19What does that remind you of?
11:20It's film
11:22And then in the summer
11:23They couldn't afford
11:24Air conditioning
11:25His asthma got to be
11:26Really bad
11:27So Marty
11:28Would just cough
11:29All night
11:30And had difficulty breathing
11:31When he got those attacks
11:33And you can't help him
11:34You want to
11:36Break the walls apart
11:37His father
11:38Would take him
11:39To 42nd Street
11:40And they would go
11:41From movie theater
11:42To movie theater
11:44There was no air conditioning
11:46At all
11:46Anywhere
11:47Except the movie theater
11:48Movie theaters
11:49Had cooled by refrigeration
11:50People would just
11:51Go in there
11:51To be cool
11:52They didn't care
11:53What film it was
11:55And that's how
11:56Marty saw movies
11:57Marty's life
11:58Depended upon
12:00Going to movies
12:03That's where he could breathe
12:08I would just go up there
12:09Whatever was playing
12:10B films
12:11A noir like
12:12The Big Heat
12:17Musicals of the late 40s
12:18Early 50s
12:24Re-release of Wizard of Oz
12:26When she opens the door
12:27And it's Technicolor
12:28Really are taken
12:29Into another world
12:30There's no such thing
12:31As disbelief
12:32You're there
12:35And we'll never forget
12:36The intensity
12:37Of the lurid masterpiece
12:39Duel in the sun
12:43They had the two lovers
12:44At the end
12:45Who shoot each other
12:45It was really
12:47An extraordinary experience
12:48For a child
12:49I had to do it
12:50I had to do it
12:52I had to do it
12:53Of course you did
12:55Let me
12:56Let me hold you
12:59He told me once
13:00He said that's where
13:01He got his first glimmer
13:03Of sexual arousal
13:05He sees it in a movie
13:10The deepest feelings came from
13:12The near realist films
13:14Every Friday night
13:15On television
13:16They showed Italian films
13:18For the Italian community
13:22All my family would come over
13:24And my uncles
13:27They're there too
13:28And they had been in the war
13:29In Italy
13:35People were talking all the time
13:36Over the movie
13:38And they were answering in Italian
13:39They were talking
13:40And it was like
13:41I didn't see as a five-year-old
13:44I just didn't see the difference
13:46Between those people on the TV
13:47With the ones who
13:48My family
13:49There was
13:50So then in a way
13:51Movies or cinema
13:52Became something else
13:57Particularly in Bicycle Thieves
14:01Towards the end of Bicycle Thief
14:02The father is caught
14:04Sealing the bike
14:06He's humiliated in public
14:08A little boy who observes this
14:10Was really shaken
14:15That film
14:16For me was so powerful
14:18And it
14:19Had a foundation of truth to it
14:22And I realized that
14:24It somehow relates directly to
14:26The expulsion from Corona
14:30With the humiliation and the shame
14:32Of my father
14:33And my mother
14:33And all of us
14:34All of us
14:36People were watching us
14:37Put our furniture on a U-Haul
14:40People were shouting at us
14:45And having to live with it
14:47And to go on with life
14:50The depth that those pictures reached
14:53In terms of the heart
14:54It wasn't just watching a movie
14:57And I guess it's affected me since then
15:03I became obsessed with all kinds of films
15:05And I used my imagination
15:07I was making up all these stories
15:12So I started drawing these little pictures
15:13That showed the impression of movement
15:15Like the storyboard for a film
15:18These images move
15:19This is a boom
15:21A tracking shot
15:22Here
15:22Here's the wall of Rome
15:23And here are the trees here
15:25And the camera's on a crane
15:27And the camera comes all the way down
15:29Over the backs of the first group of men
15:31And the door's open
15:33Like it's a big crane shot
15:37As you go from here
15:38And then it goes behind
15:39And you go down
15:39I'm still doing this shot
15:41I'm still doing
15:41It doesn't quite work all the time
16:00So I was 11 or 12
16:02When I did this
16:05My father, he walked by the doorway one day
16:07What is he, what are you doing?
16:08Cutting up paper dolls?
16:10And was it because he was sort of implying
16:12That you were like girly?
16:13Yeah
16:14Can't have that in that world
16:18A man showed himself
16:19From the world I came from
16:21Strength
16:23Open to violence
16:24Can be violent
16:25You know
16:25Charge and command, etc
16:28It was really the hub
16:30Of the five mafia families
16:32So all of them
16:34Were in that neighborhood
16:36They were an infinitesimal
16:38Part of the culture
16:39But they carried so much weight
16:42If you were in the barber's chair
16:44You had half a haircut
16:45One of these guys walked in
16:46You got off the chair
16:47I mean, there was no way
16:49They were going to wait
16:51You had to deal with them
16:52You had to deal with them
16:53When my father had to take a job
16:55And during the 30s and the depression
16:56He had a very good job
16:57In the garment district
16:58Well, that was worked out
17:00Once you take that favor
17:01You owe favors
17:02And it goes on like that
17:03For years
17:05He always told me
17:06He said
17:06Don't ever let them do a favor for you
17:08They're nothing but bloodsuckers
17:10And then somebody walked by
17:11And he goes
17:11Hey, how are you?
17:12Fine
17:13How are you doing?
17:14Can I
17:14Hey, you got five dollars on you?
17:16I said
17:17Five dollars?
17:17Yeah
17:18I said
17:19I'll give you what I have in my pocket
17:20He takes it
17:21I said
17:21Dollar
17:22What's the matter with you?
17:23I said five
17:23It's all I have
17:24I'll give it to you
17:25You want it?
17:25No, no, no
17:26He said
17:26You had the ten dollars here
17:29Where we come from
17:30You have to be careful
17:31You know what I mean?
17:32No, you have to be careful
17:32To me, they're good people
17:34They don't bother me
17:35They were brought up
17:36In a rough neighborhood
17:37And they saw plenty
17:39And they didn't say anything
17:40Because we used to tell them
17:41If you see something
17:42You don't say anything
17:43So they were brought up like that
17:48I did see serious stuff
17:49That's you
17:53Violence was imminent
17:54All the time
18:02I'll never forget one night
18:03We're standing outside
18:04And there was a guy
18:05Lying in the Jersey street
18:06Remember?
18:08And we're still looking
18:09We're talking
18:09We're by the graveyard
18:10And we're going
18:11The guy's not moving
18:12Missing his hands
18:13Yeah
18:13I said
18:14The guy's not moving
18:15Yeah
18:15He's dressed
18:17Nicely
18:17You kind of go over, Robert
18:19You were going over
18:20Looking around
18:20You came back
18:23You said
18:23Jimmy just put a pencil
18:24In his head
18:25Yeah
18:25To make sure
18:27That it was a bullet hole
18:29That was when
18:30Mulberry Street was still
18:31The place where they
18:32Dumped the bodies
18:32They called it
18:33Murder Mile
18:34Yeah
18:34Used to be called
18:35And the Bowery was called
18:37Devil's Mile
18:37So we were in between
18:39Murder Mile and Devil's Mile
18:44For the most part
18:45It was harmless
18:46You know
18:47Gambling
18:47And stuff like that
18:49I mean nobody thought of
18:50You know
18:52Organized crime
18:53As being wrong
18:53Or bad
18:54They were
18:54Your father
18:55Your uncle
19:01My father's youngest brother
19:02Joey
19:02I was called
19:03Joe the Bug
19:04He half raised me
19:05So to speak
19:06He was on the second floor
19:07We were on the third floor
19:08On Elizabeth Street
19:10He started working with these wise guys
19:11And got into that life
19:14But he was not a made man in any way
19:16He was not
19:18He was like a rough and tumble
19:19Person
19:21My uncle Joe the Bug
19:23Was considered the best
19:25Bootlegger
19:25Had the best formula
19:26What do they call him?
19:27Joe the Bug
19:28Joe the Bug
19:29I remember that
19:31He was not
19:32Representative of the entire family
19:35Just want to make that clear
19:37Say your case now
19:38My mother used to say
19:39Where's Uncle Joe?
19:40She goes
19:40He's back at school
19:41He's back in college
19:49You've got to remember
19:50In those communities
19:51A lot of these mobsters
19:53Were daily communicants
19:54In Marty's world
19:55St. Patrick's Church is here
19:57And across the street
19:58Is the Ravenite Social Club
20:00Which is the mob social club
20:02That goes all the way back
20:03To Prohibition
20:05And it was the place
20:06That John Gotti took over
20:07After he murdered Paul Castellano
20:10You want to talk about
20:11The connection
20:11Between those two worlds
20:13And here's this little kid
20:15Watching that happen
20:16How is that not going to affect you?
20:20The retreat was into
20:23Catholicism
20:25The strongest impression
20:26I ever got
20:26Was going into a church
20:28I was around seven years old
20:29When I went to my first church
20:30St. Patrick's Cathedral
20:32It was a relief
20:34From what I
20:35Sensed around me
20:40Suddenly I walked
20:41I was in this beautiful place
20:43And it had serenity
20:44It had ritual
20:48And I was part of the ritual
20:50There were moments
20:51When I was an altar boy
20:51And I would ring the bells
20:53That's a moment where
20:54The whole world stops
20:57The presence is there
21:00The presence of God
21:01Right there
21:03Decided to go to Catholic school
21:05He went to St. Patrick's
21:06Graduated from there
21:08And then everything
21:09After that was religious
21:10Then he entered the priesthood
21:13There was a preparatory seminary
21:15And that was on 85th street somewhere
21:17I did okay for the first few months
21:20But
21:22Something happened
21:26I began to realize
21:28The world was changing
21:29It was early rock and roll
21:31And the old world
21:32Was dying out
21:37Once I became aware
21:39Of life around me
21:42Falling in love
21:43Or being attracted
21:44To girls
21:45And so
21:46Not that you're acting out
21:47On it
21:47But there were these feelings
21:49And I suddenly realized
21:50It's much more complicated
21:51Than this
21:52You can't shut yourself off
21:57I know him forever
22:00Him being a priest
22:01That would have been nice
22:01I guess
22:02But I don't
22:02Never saw that finishing
22:04You know
22:04I didn't see that
22:05He had a heavy eye
22:06For the ladies
22:07I don't know
22:09The idea of priesthood
22:12To devote yourself
22:13To others
22:13Really
22:14That's what it's about
22:15And I realized
22:16I don't belong there
22:18And I tried to stay
22:19But they
22:20Got my father in there
22:22And they told him
22:23Get him out of here
22:24Really?
22:25Yeah
22:25Because I behaved badly
22:28But I had to find
22:29My own way
22:29Because there's no way
22:30I could have survived
22:31In the streets
22:31So I had to find
22:32A more intellectual
22:33Way of existing
22:34For the future
22:35But there were no books
22:37In the house
22:37And was not in the culture
22:39Luckily
22:40I had kind of a mentor
22:42Father Francis Principe
22:44He was about 22 years old
22:4623
22:46He was a young guy
22:47He was like 23
22:4824 years old
22:49Tough
22:49Tough guy too
22:50He took on a couple
22:52Of guys from the neighborhood
22:52And uh
22:53How so?
22:54Fought him
22:55Knocked the hell out of him
22:56I mean serious guys
22:58Why?
22:59They told him
23:00Take your collar off
23:00He said okay
23:01He took it off
23:02Oh he was tough
23:03He should have been a cop
23:04He was tough
23:05Yeah he was tough
23:07Good man though
23:07If he liked you
23:08He liked you
23:09If he didn't like you
23:09You knew it
23:10Father Principe
23:11Would do things with us
23:13Pick
23:13He'd pick a bunch of guys
23:15Take you to see a film
23:16He was intelligent
23:18And loved films
23:19Loved music
23:20Literature
23:21Graham Greene
23:22Dostoyevsky
23:23James Baldwin
23:25There's so many beautiful
23:27Incredible
23:29Magnificent
23:29Creations of the human mind
23:31And spirit
23:32That if they come in contact with
23:34They have to grow
23:35Here you are
23:36You know
23:37This is it
23:38Mark Mulberry Street
23:40There has to be more
23:41Prince Bay was the one
23:42Who really
23:43Hit us in the head
23:44And said
23:44You don't have to live like this
23:45You don't have to live like this
23:47You know
23:48Get an education
23:49Get out
23:49You know
23:49Trying to get out of it
23:50Yeah
23:51And I became close friends
23:54With guys who
23:55Had aspirations
23:56To go to college
23:58And also
23:58Tough street kids
23:59Like Robert Juricola
24:01Used to call him
24:02Kurti
24:03He was wonderful
24:04But he was
24:05A tough street kid too
24:07Nobody could
24:08Get anything over him
24:10Knock you down
24:11I was fascinated
24:13By a guy in the neighborhood
24:14Who had a different thought
24:15And you know
24:16I would go up his apartment
24:16And he had
24:17He would do all these storyboards
24:19Stories
24:20Like little
24:21Comic strips
24:26I remember being up to his house
24:28And him showing us
24:29The things that he had drawn
24:30And what was all your reaction?
24:33I mean none of us could do that
24:35He was so focused
24:38Your camera we used
24:39For the Vesuvius VI
24:41Which we did on the rubes
24:42Yeah
24:42Of your
24:43Of Bavona's building
24:45Yep
24:45We had the idea
24:46Of a private eye
24:48In ancient Rome
24:52I played Julius Caesar
24:54In it
24:55So I get killed
24:56In that one
24:57And I played
24:58Rocco Gunnius
24:59With a private eye
25:00It was incredible
25:02Because he had a bunch of guys
25:03In the neighborhood
25:04To do this
25:05With togas
25:06Everybody had togas on
25:08And we would have
25:09Like a Saturday evening
25:10My parents were out
25:11And we'd have a party
25:12And have a few drinks
25:13And present the film
25:15With music
25:16We had a way of working
25:17By switching the records
25:19So all the eclectic soundtrack
25:21Was already there
25:22Well I wanted to make movies
25:24But you don't make movies
25:25Where I came from
25:26Saying I want to go to film school
25:28Was like
25:29What are you talking about?
25:31Most of us went to Fordham College
25:33And Marty enrolled
25:34In business school
25:36And then there was
25:36A kind of cathartic event
25:38That happened
25:40I had a friend of mine
25:41Who died at 18 years old
25:42From cancer
25:44And that turned
25:45Everything upside down
25:47One of the guys
25:48Of our group
25:48Had cancer
25:50He was operated on initially
25:53They cut off
25:54Everything from here
25:55To here
26:00And then he died
26:01Six months later
26:04When they buried him
26:05We were all at the funeral
26:05And it was out in Queens
26:07And all these tombstones
26:09Packed on top of each other
26:10I look up
26:12And there's the
26:12Continental Can Company
26:14I said
26:15That's what it comes to
26:17You die
26:18They bury you
26:18In front of the
26:19Continental Can Company
26:21And I was thinking
26:22What is life?
26:23You get a good job
26:25Screw you
26:27I'm not going to work
26:28Before the
26:29Continental Can Company
26:31Who the hell are you?
26:34Who the hell
26:35You think you are?
26:35No more
26:35Bury me right there
26:36Nobody even sees it
26:40I couldn't do it
26:43I wouldn't do it
26:48Of all things
26:48For some reason
26:49I wound up
26:49With a catalog
26:50From NYU
26:51I asked my parents
26:52I said
26:53Maybe I should just go
26:54And see what that is
26:54It's down the block
26:56Really
26:56Down Housen Street
26:57To the west side
26:59It may only be
27:00Five blocks away
27:00But it was another world
27:01It was the village
27:03Of the 50s
27:04You know
27:04The beatnik
27:06And then at NYU
27:08And then at NYU
27:08There was an orientation day
27:10And this one guy
27:11Got up
27:11Hague Mnugin
27:12And he spoke so fast
27:14He had such passion
27:15For cinematic narrative
27:18That
27:19That's where I'm going
27:20I'm going to be around
27:21This guy
27:23So in a sense
27:24From my father
27:24To the priest
27:25To him
27:27So your first film
27:28Where did the idea
27:29Come from
27:30It was really
27:30An exploration of the medium
27:31And having fun with
27:32The filmmaking process
27:34But I just got in town
27:36And my friends told me
27:37About a place
27:38Where I could stay
27:38For cheap and all
27:40And
27:41Well I liked it
27:42The neighborhood was nice
27:44The building was nice
27:46The landlady was nice
27:48What it really is
27:49Was using film itself
27:51Cutting
27:51As humor
27:52So I fixed it up
27:56But what happened
27:57Was that my editor
27:58Cut the negative
27:59The wrong way
28:01And it was destroyed
28:02Practically
28:03Then my professor says
28:05I think this young woman
28:06Knows how to help this
28:07I said well
28:08I'll try
28:09So I went over
28:11Marty was sitting
28:13Like this
28:14With his eyes open
28:15But I think he was asleep
28:16I don't know
28:16He had been up late
28:17Cutting his movie
28:18And she came in
28:19And we fixed the negative
28:21Shot by shot
28:22He says I stayed up
28:24For three days
28:24I don't remember that
28:25I don't remember
28:26A lot of it
28:27Maybe that's why
28:29But she saved
28:31The original negative
28:32And the film
28:34We all knew
28:35When we saw his work
28:36At NYU
28:38That he had it
28:41It's not just you
28:43Murray
28:43Has the most amazing
28:44Ideas in it
28:46See this tie
28:50Twenty dollars
28:52See the shoes
28:53The actor raises the camera
28:55Up with his hands
28:56Fifty dollars
28:58See the suit
29:01Two hundred dollars
29:02Remember at that point
29:03The French new wave hit
29:05All the films broke
29:06As many rules as possible
29:09Talking into the camera
29:10To the audience
29:16To address you
29:18This car
29:22Five thousand dollars
29:23Take you in
29:24On a ride
29:25Directly
29:27You know
29:29To seduce you
29:30Hi I'm Joe
29:33The style
29:34Just came to me
29:35With all the input
29:36Of French new wave
29:37Italian new wave
29:38The New York underground
29:40The New York avant-garde
29:41And stand-up comedy
29:43Well you'll have to
29:44Excuse me
29:44I was talking
29:45Comedy was breaking through
29:47And experimenting
29:48Oh yeah
29:49It's not just you
29:50Murray
29:50Murray of course
29:51Comes from Mel Brooks
29:53And the 2000 year old man
29:55Murray
29:58King Murray wasn't it
29:59No just Murray
30:00Everybody was named Murray
30:01At the time
30:02There were Italian guys
30:03In Murray
30:04Jewish guys in Murray
30:05I forgot to introduce myself
30:07I'm Murray
30:08There's so much humor
30:09Marty's mother feeding Murray
30:11Through the bars
30:12Of the prison cell
30:13Or Murray
30:15When he's testifying
30:16Before Congress
30:19Is this thing working?
30:20With the use of narration
30:22Coming out of everywhere
30:23From Jules and Jim
30:28To Kind Hearts and Coronets
30:30I was a healthier baby
30:33Born of an English mother
30:34And Italian father
30:35The influence
30:36Was coming in from everywhere
30:37Who succumbed to a heart attack
30:39At the moment
30:39Of first setting eyes on me
30:40And so we broke
30:41Everything open
30:42And you could combine it all
30:43And it's a movie
30:44I mean I was really going places
30:48You know going places
30:49All over
30:50And that structure
30:51And that tone
30:53Is very much reflected
30:54In Goodfellas
30:55I could go anywhere
30:56I could do anything
30:58I knew everybody
31:00And everybody knew me
31:01Pacing of the cutting
31:03The rhythm of the cutting
31:04The narration
31:05The overflowing of words
31:06Words and images
31:07I mean the same instinct
31:09Hit me there too
31:10Let's wipe away everything
31:12Let's go and make something
31:13Completely free
31:20I was aware of Marty
31:22At NYU
31:23When he won the
31:24Rosenthal Award
31:25For the best short
31:27Made by a director
31:28Under 25
31:30Of course he was
31:31Immensely talented
31:36I met Marty
31:37When I was a young
31:39Journalist
31:40At Time Magazine
31:41And I got an assignment
31:43To do
31:43A story about
31:45This peculiar
31:46New phenomenon
31:47Student filmmakers
31:49And I had to find
31:51A student filmmaker
31:52And his name was
31:53Marty Scorsese
31:55His work
31:56Was incredible
31:58The film became
31:59Pretty successful
32:00But right around
32:02That time
32:02A professor
32:03Talked to me
32:04About my films
32:05And he said
32:06That's good
32:06You have all the
32:06Technical stuff
32:07Now you need
32:07A philosophy
32:12Shadows
32:12John Cassavetes
32:13Is the key
32:16Shadows
32:17Made Marty understand
32:18You could go out
32:20On the street
32:20The streets that he knew
32:22With light cameras
32:23And make a movie
32:25From your heart
32:26And your life
32:28I could take
32:29What I was experiencing
32:29In life
32:31And
32:32Create a cinematic narrative
32:37It became something
32:38Called
32:38Who's that knocking
32:39And this was going to be
32:41My first feature
32:41A thesis film
32:44I cast
32:45Harvey Keitel
32:46Looking to get
32:48Experience as an actor
32:49I auditioned along
32:50With a number of people
32:51And I got the job
32:53He understood the streets
32:55And
32:56The characters
32:59All of us was hanging out
33:00In the street
33:00We were just making
33:01A street movie
33:02We were up on the roof
33:03I remember once
33:04On the roof of his tenement
33:07You had to get permission
33:08From the mafia
33:09To shoot up there
33:10And the boss came up
33:12To check us out
33:13At one point
33:14Shalutz is the major
33:15Mob guy
33:16On Elizabeth Street
33:17He's a killer
33:19Pat Smarty on the back
33:20Kiss him on the head
33:21Kiss everything
33:22Anything he wants
33:24So he had total access
33:25To neighborhoods
33:27That nobody
33:27Would have access to
33:30And part of it was
33:31Not
33:31You know
33:32Organized crime
33:33Part of it was just
33:34Street
33:34Tough kids
33:35West Side Story type
33:36And we used to have
33:37These little
33:38Called after hour clubs
33:40Should I say this
33:41I should have
33:42Payed the cops off
33:42We were serving liquor
33:44Sixteen
33:46I had a club
33:47It was private
33:48Members only
33:49I was paying rent
33:50Like forty dollars
33:51It was like nothing
33:52Forty dollars
33:52But it was a place to be
33:54It had a bar
33:54Yeah
33:55We were drinking there
33:56Things happened
33:57A few things
33:58Play cards
33:59Gamble
33:59There were crap games
34:00In them
34:00And it was business
34:01A lot of business
34:02You lose because
34:04You're playing with my money
34:06But I
34:06In a funny way
34:07Wanted to step back
34:09And observe
34:12Marty hit it right on the head
34:13He remembered everything
34:14One time
34:16We went to a club
34:16On the west side
34:17Ten minutes later
34:18They gave us a beep
34:21Like my head is
34:22Bulging out
34:24Marty turns around
34:25And says
34:26I wish I had a camera
34:27I said
34:27This fucking guy
34:28Wants a camera
34:29I want a gun
34:30He said
34:31I wish I had a camera
34:32I couldn't believe it
34:38It was shown once
34:40At a screening for NYU
34:41And it didn't work
34:42It was terrible
34:44And so I shot
34:46New scenes
34:47With a young actress
34:48Zina Beth Youn
34:49And Harvey Keitel
34:51Came back
34:57One of the things
34:58About who's that knocking
34:59Because it's being
35:00Created in a time
35:01Where there's sexual
35:02Liberation all around
35:03And yet you feel like
35:04He's living
35:04Not with us
35:11Marty still had
35:12That view of Catholicism
35:13That he had as a kid
35:15Where if you had
35:16Some sexual type
35:18Of relationship
35:18With a girl
35:19I think Marty thought
35:20That would destroy her
35:22But that was
35:23Something that probably
35:26We all felt
35:27You're a good girl
35:29Or you're a broad
35:30Or you know
35:30I think I'm gonna have
35:32To tell you something
35:36All right, go on
35:37That scene
35:38The girl tells him
35:39About being raped
35:41And his reaction to it
35:42And I thought
35:43How did you come up
35:44With that idea
35:46Well, that's the way
35:49That's where we come from
35:50In that
35:51In that
35:51In that world
35:58I can't
35:59I can't understand
36:04I mean, if anyone else
36:06Marty, he made it
36:07Quite clear
36:07That it wasn't her fault
36:08She was raped
36:10But for someone
36:12Coming from this
36:14Culture
36:15To be with a woman
36:16Who's not a virgin
36:17Is just not on
36:18It just doesn't
36:20Make any sense
36:20Harvey is
36:21Fighting against it here
36:23But he just can't
36:24Let go of it
36:26How do I know
36:27You didn't go through
36:27The same story with him
36:29The idea was
36:30Marriage, virginity, children
36:32That culture
36:34Coming to
36:36How should I say
36:38A kind of conflict
36:39Tell me something else
36:40While you're at it
36:41Who else is going to marry you
36:42While you're at it, huh?
36:43Tell me that
36:44While you're at it
36:44You whore
36:45Because that's what you are
36:46If you don't know it by now
36:47You whore
36:55It was a problem
36:56With the movie
36:57Because a lot of people
36:58Turned against Harvey's character
37:00And Marty wouldn't change it
37:02Because that's the way
37:03That guy was
37:05That's the way
37:06Those guys were
37:09In that time
37:10In that place
37:11He was being
37:12Honest about that
37:15Harry Uflin
37:15He was my agent
37:16Showed her
37:17At the William Morris Agency
37:19And I think it was 1968
37:21And guys in the agency
37:22Were laughing
37:22They were going
37:23Here we are
37:24In the middle
37:24Of the sexual revolution
37:25And here's a guy
37:26Who won't make love
37:26To the girl
37:27Because he loves her
37:33You got married
37:34Pretty young
37:35Yeah, because of that
37:36Yeah
37:36That's the way we thought
37:37That's what you did
37:39Well, in 23
37:39You're supposed to be an adult
37:41From the world I came from
37:44Lorraine Brennan
37:45I think she was
37:46In the second film
37:47I think she was
37:48One of the dancers
37:50I remember meeting Lorraine
37:52On the shoot of Murray
37:53It was interesting
37:54Because of course
37:55She was certainly
37:56Very different
37:57Than a lot of the girls
37:58That we knew
37:59You know
38:00From the neighborhood
38:00She came from
38:01An affluent family
38:06Were you surprised
38:07When Marty
38:08Decided to get married
38:10Oh no
38:11It came kind of quick
38:13If I remember it
38:14What's the reason
38:15Do you think
38:15That he got married
38:16So quickly
38:20They were young
38:22And crazy in love
38:24She was an actress
38:25And a model
38:27And she left the business
38:29Really to have me
38:30Raise me
38:35We adored her
38:36You know
38:37And then we moved
38:38To Jersey City
38:39Because it was a
38:40Big apartment
38:41And it was very cheap
38:43He moved really
38:44From his home
38:45His family home
38:46And he didn't move
38:48As quickly as she did
38:49I think
38:49She'd be home
38:51And she'd call
38:52My grandmother's
38:53And she'd be like
38:54Katie
38:54Is Martin there?
38:56Yes
38:56He was there
38:57Like he'd go
38:57To my grandmother's
38:58To eat every night
38:59Or most nights
39:01Like and so he was
39:02Still going home
39:02To his mother
39:04He was around
39:05But he was younger
39:07And still trying to
39:09You know
39:09Get his career going
39:11And I know that
39:12When they were young
39:13It was a very intense time
39:16The breaking culture
39:18Was happening
39:19New music
39:20The Vietnam situation
39:23I was not a very
39:24Political person
39:25At all
39:26But what was going on
39:28And what we saw
39:28On the TV
39:29At dinner time
39:31In this horrible
39:33Horrible situation
39:35I realized
39:36We shouldn't be doing this
39:38And so
39:39I wrote this idea
39:40Down in two pages
39:41And it was for
39:43The Angry Arts Week
39:44In New York
39:47I had this idea
39:50And it was right
39:51At the height
39:51Of the Vietnam War
39:57A man
39:58He goes to shave
40:01And you know
40:02Does himself in
40:07The person would be
40:08Blonde hair, blue eyed
40:09Be white American
40:11You know
40:12And it had to have
40:13That piece of music
40:13Of an America
40:14Of the 1930s
40:16How did you think
40:17Of that one?
40:19That was in my mind
40:20That's how I think
40:22That's how I think
40:25Suicide
40:26American suicide
40:27I remember being
40:31In a church
40:32On a Sunday
40:32And the priest
40:33Saying it's a holy war
40:34And I never went back in
40:38The behavior
40:39Of the people
40:40The representatives
40:41Of the church
40:42Didn't feel right
40:44To me in the 60s
40:45It just didn't
40:46Did the behavior
40:47Of you know
40:48Bohemians or
40:49Hippies
40:49Feel right?
40:52The hippie thing
40:53I gotta say
40:53I wasn't hippie
40:55But I felt very comfortable
40:57Around them
40:57Because they were
40:58Kind
40:59It's really amazing
41:00It looks like
41:01Some kind of
41:01Biblical
41:02Epical
41:04Unbelievable
41:05Scene
41:13And then the summer of 69
41:15Became the Woodstock thing
41:16We all started working
41:18With a group of people
41:20Who had been at NYU
41:21To make Woodstock
41:22To me
41:23Michael Wadley
41:24And Marty
41:26They were co-directing
41:28It was a co-directing thing
41:29With Michael Wadley
41:30Who had shot
41:32The scenes
41:32For Who's That Knocking
41:34They drove us up
41:35And then you couldn't
41:36Drive anymore
41:36You just left the car
41:37In the row
41:38We were sleeping
41:39On the ground
41:40I had ticks in my hair
41:41We were covered in mud
41:44Marty went up
41:45With his cufflinks
41:46Because he thought
41:47We would be going out
41:48To dinner at night
41:49There was no going
41:50To dinner
41:50But he had brought
41:51His cufflinks
41:55We were there
41:56Day and night
42:06And it was so exciting
42:18I actually hallucinated
42:20I thought
42:20I thought at one point
42:21That they were charging
42:22The stage
42:24I had been awake
42:27Three, four nights
42:29You know
42:29Well you were drugged
42:30No, no, no, no
42:32This is
42:33The night before drugs
42:34You know
42:35They may have been
42:36I have no way
42:36You know
42:37What was going on
42:38Was going on
42:38But we were young enough
42:40To stay awake
42:41And be able to do it
42:43It's the only time
42:44I've ever been in a place
42:45That actually acted out
42:47Acted out
42:48Compassion and love
42:49For other people
42:50If you got food
42:51Feed other people
42:53Keep feeding each other
42:54It could have gone
42:55Pretty bad
42:56Because there was no food
42:58There were 500,000 people
43:03And then you see
43:04Wavy gravy
43:04They're saying
43:05What I have in mind
43:06Is breakfast in bed
43:07For 500,000
43:08That's what he did
43:09We're all feeding each other
43:13We must be in heaven, man
43:17It was
43:20It was very special
43:25When we came back
43:26From Woodstock
43:27I got involved
43:28In the cutting with it
43:34Santana
43:35At the end
43:35At the end
43:36On two screens
43:37All these images
43:38Go very fast
43:42I got fascinated
43:43By free association
43:45Of images
43:46The thinking process
43:48I wanted to visualize it
43:51But as the producer
43:52Told me
43:53He said
43:53Marty
43:54There can only be
43:54One director
43:58Well he was supposed
43:59To co-direct
43:59But Wadley
44:02Didn't allow that
44:03In the end
44:03And I think
44:04That was very hard
44:05On Marty
44:06They took it
44:07Back to California
44:08I was told
44:09I couldn't go
44:09With them
44:10To finish the work
44:11They were going
44:12To take it
44:12Him and Thelma
44:15Basically
44:15For me
44:16It was
44:17Losing
44:18Being part of a group
44:19And being ostracized
44:20From a group
44:21Right
44:22And
44:23It must have been hard though
44:25It was devastating
44:26And the winner is
44:30Woodstock
44:36At that point
44:37Harry Uflin
44:38Who was my agent
44:38Got me at first feature
44:40To make
44:40Kind of a strange
44:41Noir film
44:42Called The Honeymoon Killers
44:43And I just started
44:44Designing this
44:45Simple noir film
44:47Into something
44:48That was quite extravagant
44:49I lasted
44:50Five days
44:52And I was told
44:53You have to leave
44:55You're hired to do a film
44:56You can't impose
44:57Other things
44:58On the subject matter
44:59Itself
45:01And I was trying
45:02To make something
45:02Much more of it
45:03Than I was putting
45:04Myself there
45:04Rather than the material
45:06I was putting myself
45:06Over the material
45:09This was when
45:10My marriage fell apart
45:12Because the more
45:13I dealt with
45:14Trying to get films made
45:15And that sort of thing
45:16I
45:18It fell apart
45:19And that was
45:19All there was to it
45:21You know
45:21I remember
45:22Also when I did
45:24I was thinking of it
45:25In the car coming up
45:27When
45:29I had
45:30Made
45:30A nice girl
45:31And one of these awards
45:32You know
45:33Then I would go
45:33Meet these people
45:34For advice
45:35And one old man
45:36Named George K. Arthur
45:39George K. Arthur
45:40Was an actor
45:41In
45:41Joseph von Sternberg's
45:43Silent film
45:43The Salvation Hunters
45:45He said
45:45You have talent
45:46He said
45:46And he said
45:47Are you married?
45:48I said
45:48No
45:48He says
45:49Oh good
45:49Then you won't
45:49Hurt anyone
45:53I didn't quite know
45:54What he met
45:59He was so
46:01Driven
46:02He really
46:03Wanted to make movies
46:05He wanted to go
46:06To Hollywood
46:06And bust in
46:07And went out to L.A.
46:09To work on this thing
46:09Called Medicine Bowl Caravan
46:11For Freddie Weintraub
46:12He was an old time
46:14Bohemian
46:14Hustler
46:15He made the deal
46:16For Woodstock
46:17For Warner Brothers
46:17To buy it
46:18Called me
46:19And said
46:19Come out to California
46:20Have a rock and roll
46:21Documentary
46:22That needs an editor
46:23My dad hired Marty
46:25To edit a really
46:26Terrible film
46:27Called Medicine Bowl Caravan
46:29And I met Marty
46:31He was smart
46:31He was funny
46:32He was cute
46:33He came up
46:34To about here on me
46:35And I just said
46:37If I borrow some money
46:38From my father
46:39Can I take you out
46:40For dinner?
46:43All that I really remember
46:44Is that
46:46Marty was going to parties
46:47As much as he could
46:48Meeting as many people
46:49As he could
46:50I want everyone to look
46:51At Mr. Spielberg
46:53Who came in
46:54I met Marty
46:55For the first time
46:56Because we had
46:57A mutual friend
46:57And he had decided
46:58To invite everybody
47:00Up to his house
47:01And bring our short
47:02Movies with us
47:03He brought a movie
47:05Called The Big Shave
47:07It's a very close shave
47:10Then Brian De Palma
47:11Who was a friend of mine
47:12And was one of
47:13Marty's best friends
47:14Started getting
47:15All of us together
47:16I met so many people
47:18So many different actors
47:20Writers
47:20And Schrader was there
47:23The one I remember
47:24The most is
47:25John Milius
47:26On New Year's Eve
47:27John was
47:28Shooting off a gun
47:31It's 1970
47:39I met George Lucas
47:40There too
47:40And Lucas was doing
47:41THX 1138
47:43Everybody was making
47:44These first features
47:45And they were being shown
47:47And at that time
47:48In Hollywood
47:49Is the easy writer
47:50Breakthrough
47:51Giving respect
47:51To long-haired filmmakers
47:53Who smoke marijuana
47:54And all of a sudden
47:55Independent filmmakers
47:56Were being taken
47:57Very seriously
47:58By parochial
47:59Hollywood studios
48:02Marty was looking
48:03To connect
48:04And try and make
48:06A career out here
48:08Until finally
48:08I met Roger Corman
48:10Who said he'd give me
48:11An exploitation film
48:12To make
48:12Roger Corman
48:14Who was employing
48:15Slash exploiting
48:16Young filmmakers
48:17In order to make
48:18These genre movies
48:20Yeah this film
48:21Box got birthed
48:21It's the 30s
48:23And they're running
48:23Around in cars
48:24It's like a
48:24Bonnie and Clyde take off
48:25Basically a genre
48:27Would you want to do it
48:28I said absolutely
48:30Hi
48:30What happened out there
48:32We get robbed
48:34Hi
48:34Is that something wrong
48:38Corman came down
48:38To Arkansas
48:39Where I was shooting
48:40Wanted to see my preparation
48:41And I showed him
48:42The first two scenes
48:43And old drawings
48:44Every scene was drawn
48:45And then he looked
48:45At the volume of paper
48:48And he said
48:48Wait a minute
48:48There's old drawings
48:49He said
48:49Did you have every scene
48:50Done this way
48:50I said yes
48:51He said alright
48:51And he walked out
48:53Box got birthed
48:54I was learning
48:55How to make a film
48:55On a budget
48:56When working with
48:57Doctors whom I adored
48:59Not my tiara
49:02I ain't so special
49:04I finished on a schedule
49:05And on a budget
49:08And getting it done
49:09Without getting fired
49:11Seriously
49:11I was so happy
49:12I didn't get fired
49:15It was a milestone
49:19But my friends
49:20Didn't like it
49:21It's as if I had
49:22Caught a disease
49:23Or something
49:24Really
49:25They looked at me
49:26And moved away from me
49:29Those people
49:30I wanted to work with
49:31And they said
49:31Get away from me
49:32You know
49:34In so many words
49:35In some cases
49:35Very clearly
49:36Get away from me
49:37What they didn't like
49:38Was that I made the film
49:40Is what it was
49:41Do you think it's
49:42Because you betrayed
49:43Yourself as an artist?
49:44That's what they think
49:44Yeah
49:45That's what they think
49:47Right around that time
49:48Brian De Palma
49:48Also gave me the script
49:49Of Taxi Driver
49:50And I wanted to do it
49:51But Michael and Julia Phillips
49:52They had made
49:53A number of films
49:54They wouldn't take it
49:55Seriously at all
49:56Because I had done
49:57Boxcar Bertha
49:57And when I look
49:59In Hollywood
50:00Marty always had
50:01Feelings as if
50:02He didn't fit in there
50:04Socially
50:06There was a beach house
50:08That Margo Kidder
50:09And Jennifer Salt
50:10Had together
50:11And a lot of the young people
50:13Used to like to go out there
50:15What I do remember
50:17Is that
50:18My friend Peter Boyle
50:20Pulled Marty out of the ocean
50:22Because he was drowning
50:23Marty went out in the surf
50:25Not an outdoors guy
50:26But he decided to be
50:27The good guy
50:28And try to mix it up
50:29And fit in
50:30And be congenial
50:31And everything
50:31And he got caught
50:33In the waves
50:34He couldn't get back in
50:36He was drowning
50:40Marty was sort of lost
50:42In Hollywood
50:43I mean he was like
50:44In a stranger
50:45In a strange land
50:46And he was trying
50:47To make some sense
50:48Out of it
50:49I had gotten to know
50:51John Cassavetes
50:52And I talked to him
50:53About Marty
50:54And he said
50:54Gee I'd like to see
50:55His movie
50:55I mean I'm sorry
50:56About
50:58About before
51:00And I was embarrassed
51:00By the film
51:01But he really
51:02Believed in it
51:03And he told me
51:03That's the kind of film
51:04You gotta make
51:05You don't make
51:05Any of this other nonsense
51:06Do that
51:07He saw
51:08In that movie
51:09Marty's amazing gift
51:12John became
51:14Marty's patron saint
51:16Of cinema
51:17His conscience
51:21So he looked
51:22At Dr. Scarberta
51:23I saw him afterwards
51:24He looked at me
51:26And he was like
51:27Ten feet away from me
51:28And he goes
51:29Come here
51:31And I went up to him
51:32And he embraced me
51:34And he held me aside
51:36Pushed me aside
51:37And he goes
51:38You just spent a year
51:39Of your life
51:39Making a piece of shit
51:45Don't do this again
51:48Don't do this again
51:50Don't you have something
51:51You really want to do
51:52And you have
51:52Well I have this thing
51:53Mean Streets
51:54Because all the things
51:55That I really wanted
51:56To get clearer
51:57In Who's That Knocking
51:59Really were in Mean Streets
52:01And he said
52:01Well get it going
52:03See if you can get
52:03An actor to play in it
52:04You said that
52:05Verna introduced
52:06She introduced them
52:07My wife was
52:08In a play
52:08With this
52:09Wonderful
52:09Wonderful actor
52:10So they said
52:11Yeah you gotta
52:11You gotta meet this guy
52:12You gotta meet this guy
52:13I said
52:13Who is he?
52:29Fuck you!
52:36I was born
52:38In a cross
52:39By her pain
52:43And I howled
52:45At my barn
52:46Is driving rain
52:50But it's alright
52:55The fact is a gas
52:57But it's alright
53:00I'm chuffed me
53:02Jack and she's a gas
53:04Gas, gas, gas
53:14I was raised
53:16I was raised by a tooth
53:18That's a good thing
53:19I was raised by a tooth
53:35But it's all right
53:40Until we can't face you
53:42Say yes, yes, yes
54:11We'll be right back
