18 April - National morning forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Good morning and welcome to your weekend weather update from the Met Office.
00:04If you've got a barometer in the house, it's probably pointing to pressure rising.
00:08We've got low pressure still close by.
00:10You can see the swirl here and the winds moving around that low,
00:14bringing plenty of showers into western Scotland.
00:16Old weather front draped across the southeast.
00:18It may take a while for things to brighten up in Kent,
00:21but generally sunny spells across the south.
00:24Further north, there will be some showers.
00:25Those showers across Scotland pretty much all day.
00:28Some for Northern Ireland and a few getting into Northern England and across parts of Wales.
00:32Maybe the odd shower into parts of the Midlands.
00:34But as I said, much of the south will be dry and bright.
00:37And even further north, there will be some decent spells of sunshine.
00:40That brisk wind slowly easing, but still bringing plenty of showers
00:43over the far north of Scotland throughout the day.
00:46Temperature-wise, well, we're fairly close to the average.
00:49Maybe up to 16, 17 across the southeast.
00:51Feeling pleasant enough in the sunny spells.
00:54But elsewhere, feeling a little fresh when the breeze is blowing.
00:56But out of that breeze and in the sunshine, not feeling too bad really for the middle part of April.
01:01Now, as we go through the evening and overnight,
01:03there's an increasing chance of seeing some showers just drifting into parts of southeast England and East Anglia.
01:08Elsewhere, the showers tend to fade in most parts.
01:11The main exception to that will be the highlands of Scotland,
01:13where we'll keep some going throughout the night.
01:15It will turn quite chilly with largely clear skies and the winds continuing to ease down.
01:20Just some hints of a frost there over northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
01:25Certainly in rural spots, temperatures will be close to freezing.
01:27Further south, generally holding up a touch above freezing.
01:31But even here, a touch of frost can't be completely ruled out,
01:34with towns and cities dropping down to 3, 4, 5 degrees Celsius.
01:38So a cool start to Sunday.
01:40For many, it will be a sunny start to Sunday.
01:43And, well, for quite a few of us, it should stay that way.
01:46There will still be some showers over northern Scotland.
01:48They'll come and go through the day.
01:50Fairly frequent still over Shetland and Orkney,
01:53coming into Aberdeenshire, Cathness and Sutherland at times too.
01:56And during the day, we may see a few showers just driving down the eastern side of England,
02:00with a brisk wind picking up here and coming down from the north,
02:05which is never a warm direction.
02:06Elsewhere, many places will see some cloud bubbling up through the day tomorrow,
02:10but generally staying dry and brighter.
02:12Those winds, yes, they're coming in from the north, but they are fairly light.
02:15So on the south coast, we might sneak up to 15 or 16 Celsius.
02:19Again, these temperatures are kind of typical for this time of year.
02:22But it will feel cooler as that northerly wind picks up in the far northeast
02:26and when the showers come along also.
02:29There will still be a few showers around as we head through Sunday night and into Monday,
02:32but the high pressure that I talked about right at the start that's building in,
02:35that sticks around through Sunday night before ambling up to the north.
02:39Now, this is important because it continues to dominate our weather,
02:42but shifting up here means the winds will swing more in from the east or the northeast.
02:46And that's going to bring chillier air in off the North Sea as we go into next week
02:51and the likelihood of quite a bit of cloud and a few showers.
02:54Whereas with this high pressure sitting here, parts of northwest Scotland should do okay for sunnier skies.
03:00So yes, high pressure is moving in and that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be a glorious spell of
03:05weather.
03:05Far from it, in fact, although most of us should have a decent day tomorrow.
