08 April - National afternoon forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Hello, welcome to your latest update from the Met Office.
00:03It's already turned a little cooler across Scotland and Northern Ireland,
00:06and it will be turning colder for England and Wales by the time we get to tomorrow.
00:11But for today, plenty of warm spring sunshine to be had.
00:14The main change is coming in from this stripe of cloud.
00:17It's a cold front behind it, lumpy-looking clouds way out in the Atlantic there.
00:22The showers and follow the isobars, and they're coming in,
00:26bringing the colder air down from the Arctic.
00:28But that's not with us yet.
00:30Still a long way off for the time being.
00:32We've got this little nose of high pressure.
00:34There is a week-old weather front that is making things fairly cloudy
00:37across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
00:39But even here, some sunny spells coming through, particularly in Aberdeenshire.
00:42We've got a little bit of drizzly rain over southwest Scotland,
00:45and it is clouding over now into parts of northern England
00:48and the northern most parts of Wales.
00:51And that west coast of Wales may turn a little misty and murky
00:53as we head into the late afternoon, into the evening time.
00:56But most of England and Wales dry and with plenty of sunshine.
01:00And even though it is cloudier across Scotland and Northern Ireland,
01:03some sunny spells coming through here.
01:05Not as warm as yesterday here, but still temperatures around or a bit above average,
01:09particularly in Aberdeenshire, 17 Celsius.
01:11But for much of England and Wales, over 20 degrees,
01:15particularly in this zone, just London northwards,
01:17we could get 25, maybe 26 degrees Celsius.
01:21A little cooler where we see some sea breezes developing,
01:23and certainly already colder in the far northwest where there's a strengthening wind.
01:28And that weather front moves in this evening,
01:29bringing some outbreaks of rain over the Hebrides,
01:32and that rain pushing its way down across the highlands,
01:35and then into parts of Northern Ireland as we head after midnight
01:38and into the early hours.
01:40Elsewhere, most places staying dry, but the cloud increasing in the west.
01:44Clear skies, of course, at the East Midlands, East Anglia and the southeast.
01:47But it won't be as chilly as it was last night.
01:50Temperatures in many towns and cities holding up in double digits.
01:54On to Thursday, and a very different feel for most.
01:57Still some spring sunshine to be had,
01:59certainly in the morning over East Anglia and the southeast.
02:01But even here, we'll see some higher cloud moving in.
02:04Very different day for Scotland,
02:05with outbreaks of rain trickling their way into Northern England.
02:09And we'll see things turning damp across West Wales also.
02:12A little bit of light rain and drizzle,
02:14possibly crossing the southwest of England.
02:16And here come those showers that we saw earlier on the satellite image.
02:19Some heavy ones moving in on a fairly brisk wind.
02:22Some snow over the hills.
02:23Some hail is possible also.
02:25But we will see some sunny spells as well as those showers moving in.
02:29Meanwhile, the sunshine disappearing across the Midlands
02:32and eastern parts of England as things slowly cloud over
02:35as that weather front moves in.
02:37And that is a cold front, so it's introducing much colder air.
02:40Temperatures significantly lower than today.
02:42We could still hang on to some warmth across East Anglia and the southeast.
02:45We could still get to 20 degrees Celsius.
02:48But for most places, this map is showing the difference in temperatures
02:52for Thursday when compared to today.
02:55And you can see quite a swathe of England and Wales,
02:59seven, eight, nine degrees, even lower compared to today.
03:02Notice that East Anglia and Coast is actually a little bit warmer
03:06because we've got the sea breezes today.
03:07And tomorrow we could still, with that switch in wind coming more in from the west,
03:11get up to 19 or 20 Celsius.
03:13But here it will cloud over with some patchy rain moving in through East Anglia
03:17during Thursday evening.
03:18Behind that, more showers packing in with a brisk wind.
03:22And those showers, as I say, could turn heavy with hail possible.
03:25A little ridge of high pressure tries to topple in across the south on Friday.
03:28But the main feature, changing weather really into the weekend,
03:31this deep area of low pressure.
03:33Look at the isobars really packing together there.
03:35So the potential for some very strong winds and some wet weather coming into western areas,
03:39particularly by the end of the week.
03:42For more on that, you'll want to be watching the 10-day trend.
03:45That'll be available on YouTube, on our YouTube channel for Wednesday afternoon.
03:50And keep up to date as things progress through the day today
03:52across all of our social media channels.
