17 April - National afternoon forecast presented by Annie Shuttleworth
Transcript
00:00Good afternoon. Although plenty of dry weather is on the cards for this weekend, this afternoon
00:04there will be a spell of rain for many of us. That's because we've got a cold front sweeping
00:09across the country. You can see that on the satellite picture from this morning, this blanket
00:14of cloud moving in from the west. It's wrapped around this area of low pressure up to the north
00:19and west of the UK. That's going to stay with more northern areas throughout this afternoon and into
00:24Saturday, whilst high pressure slowly starts to dominate further south. But you can see that rain
00:29on the radar image here, pushing in to many western areas. And that will continue its journey
00:34eastwards through this afternoon, bringing a spell of wet weather to parts of the Midlands,
00:38northeastern England, across southern areas of England too, through this afternoon. But
00:43ahead of that, though, it will remain largely dry across the far southeast of England. And
00:48there will also be some brighter spells across parts of Wales, northern and western England
00:52this afternoon. Notice across the far north, though, Northern Ireland, northern Scotland,
00:57heavy, blustery showers will continue through this afternoon. So a pretty mixed picture. I think
01:02most of us will see some rain through today. That's just everywhere apart from the far southeast,
01:07where in the sunshine, temperatures could climb as high as 20 degrees. I think we're quite likely
01:12to get to those high teens across these areas. Elsewhere, once that weather front pushes through,
01:17this cold front, it's going to turn slightly fresher. So temperatures will be closer to 11 to 13 degrees
01:23to end the day in these areas. But some brighter weather on the cards for the end of the week
01:28for
01:28parts of Wales, southwestern England, northern England before the sun goes down. And then overnight,
01:33it will remain largely dry for much of England and Wales. For Northern Ireland and Scotland,
01:37particularly across more western areas of these areas, it will stay quite damp overnight, quite windy
01:43too. Here's this area of low pressure up to the north, and that's going to continue to feed in
01:48northwesterly winds and that unsettled theme. Across more eastern areas of Scotland, though,
01:53some clearer skies. There could be a touch of grass for us by the morning. For most of us,
01:58temperatures will come close to zero rurally, but I think we should escape any widespread frost
02:03tonight, though tomorrow night is expected to be a little bit colder. Now showers will continue
02:09across northern areas through Saturday. Heavy at first, they should get a little bit lighter by the
02:13end of the day, and many southern and eastern areas of Scotland will remain largely dry. And it's the
02:18same story for much of England and Wales. A dry day is expected for most of us, though there is
02:24just
02:24a low risk of the odd shower. So you might want to take a coat just in case if you
02:29are heading out. But
02:30I think any showers will be pretty short-lived. In any sunshine, feeling pretty pleasant indeed.
02:36Temperatures climbing towards the mid to high teens across southern areas, closer to the low teens,
02:4310 or 11 degrees for some areas where you're exposed to that northerly wind. We've got quite
02:47cool air with us despite that high pressure building in to bring more settled weather. But
02:53that does mean it will be a settled evening on Saturday night. For most of us, a few showers here
02:58and there. We could see some showers across more southeastern areas, but I think they should be
03:02relatively light. That's because any rainfall is starting to fade due to high pressure pushing
03:08in. Notice the blues on the map showing that colder air. So it's not a particularly warm high
03:13pressure and it won't necessarily be that sunny, particularly through eastern areas into the start
03:19of next week. So it is worth keeping up to date with the forecast and you can do that by
