00:00This is a great time of the year to have the most plugged in man in all of football on
00:04the
00:04Make It Right Call Kyle Wright hotline. You know him from his great work on the MMQB and so much
00:10more. He joins us every single Tuesday. Albert Breer, what's up, buddy? Hey, guys, what's
00:16happening? We're living the dream here. I want to know, is this because we're going to do we've
00:21felt like this has been a slower NFL offseason. Do you feel that same way as the lead up to
00:28the
00:28NFL draft here? Have we kind of had a little slower than usual offseason?
00:34I mean, I think there's probably less buzz around the draft than there has been, you know, in
00:39quarterback rich years. You know, I do think a lot of it like rides on what sorts of players
00:45you have at the top. And, you know, so we know who's going first overall. And we've known that
00:50for a while. I don't think there are any other quarterbacks that are going to go in the first
00:53round. And then we're talking about a couple of edge rushers or running back. I just,
00:58I think to some degree, the draft, at least to this point, has lacked the juice that we've
01:03had in past years. Now, that could change as we get closer, if there's some trades and
01:07movement, that sort of stuff. You know, and then we haven't had like, I guess, the big
01:12box trade yet. Now, the AJ Brown thing is still kind of circling around out there. He did
01:19have Jalen Waddle traded. And, you know, the Aaron Rodgers thing is, I think, still, you
01:25know, to be determined. But yeah, I mean, it might be just a lack of juice in the draft
01:31in general. And then, you know, there maybe isn't like the one storyline that everybody's just
01:38attached themselves to for the entire offseason. Well, Albert, you did have the Browns involved
01:43in your latest mailbag about one of five teams eyeing to trade down. Can you tell us what you're
01:47hearing about the Browns and a potential move out of number six overall?
01:51Yeah, I think like most of the teams at the top are looking at the idea of moving down
01:56because the top of the draft really, you know, I think you look at it and it's like, yeah,
02:01I'd feel good about taking this guy at 11 or I'd feel good about taking this guy at 14.
02:06I don't know. And, you know, I've talked to you guys about this over the course of the
02:09last few weeks, of course, but, you know, the lack of like the Julio Jones receiver prospect
02:14or the Joe Alt left tackle prospect or the, you know, the, you know, Miles Garrett defensive
02:22end prospect makes it. So, you know, you're really choosing between, do we take a high
02:27end guy at a non-premium position like a Love or a Styles or a Downs, or do we compromise
02:31a little bit and take a premium position higher than maybe we would in a normal year? And so,
02:37you know, for that reason, I think there's a lot of teams looking to get down. And I think
02:40the, you know, the Cardinals are kind of the ones holding the cards. Now, most people assume
02:44the Jets are going to stick there too and take David Bailey, you know, and then I think the
02:49Cardinals are going to see if they can drum up a market for our Phil Reese. The problem that all
02:54those teams have at the top is like, what are you coming up for? You know, what is another team
02:58coming up for? And, and that remains to be determined. Albert, I think it's interesting with
03:04this draft that we've cycled through so many names at six and 24 that I feel like I've almost lost
03:10the plot a little bit here. So I feel like we're close enough to ask this question. I know it
03:16might
03:16sound different next week if we ask it again, but just who do you think are the big names in
03:21play for
03:21the Browns? The first three names that we should be paying attention to for the Browns at six?
03:28If I give you three right now, it would be Francis Maui Noah, the tackle from Miami. It'd be Spencer
03:34Fano, the tackle from Utah. And then it would be Carnell Tate, the receiver from Ohio State.
03:41Those would be the three I give you for the Browns. I think if Maui Noah and Tate both make
03:47it to six,
03:49my guess would be, that'd be a tough call for the Browns. But those would be the three guys that
03:53I
03:54would sort of say I've heard most associated with them. Which is funny because Maui Noah and Tate have
03:58been linked basically the entire time. And then Fano, we had Dane Brugler on last week and he was like,
04:02yeah, Fano should be the pick for the Browns. And then it just kind of just kept,
04:06it kept going that way. And every person we had on just kept bringing up Fano. What have you heard
04:10about him in recent, I don't know, maybe since the combine, I guess, that has shot him up?
04:15Yeah, he's really a good player. I don't think he's shot up. Like I think coming into the process,
04:20he was seen as the one or two. And you know, your question with him again, like this comes back
04:25to
04:26the, they're not being a real prototype at the premium positions. Are you comfortable with his arm length?
04:32You know, some teams view him as a guard. So like, there's that question. It's the same sort of
04:36question you have with Will Campbell at the top of the draft last year, you know, and the Patriots
04:41swallowed hard and they took Will Campbell fourth overall. And he did a good job at left tackle for
04:45the most part over the course of the year and then struggled in the playoffs. So, you know, I think
04:50that's sort of what you're looking at is like, how comfortable, how comfortable are you with their,
04:54with, with, with Bono's deficiency, which is the arm length, you know? And you know,
05:00it would be something that a team that, that, that, that, that relies on analytics like the
05:04Browns do would probably have more of a problem with. I just think they have such a need along
05:08the offensive line to just get good players up there. Um, the final would have to be part
05:14of the equation. If mom, now we know is gone and look like, I think Tate is very much in
05:18play
05:19for them as well, because they've obviously got a very big need receiver. Albert, what do you
05:23see as the ceiling and floor for Carnell in this, uh, in this draft?
05:30I don't think he'll go higher than fourth to Tennessee. I don't think he'll go lower than
05:35eighth to the Saints. So somewhere in there between four and eight, I would say.
05:39That's interesting. What has he done to separate himself from, it seems like between Tyson and
05:43Lemon at first, they were all kind of grouped together and now it does seem like Tate has made
05:46some distinctive separation here. Yeah. I think Tate's just like the most well-rounded guy.
05:52Like, I think he's the one, when you look at him, like he's a good route runner. He's tough,
05:57really good kid, really football smart, like has a lot of the things that you're looking for.
06:03And you're not really compromising much with him outside of the speed. The speed might bother you
06:08a little bit, but he's shown an ability to make plays downfield. Um, so he plays faster than maybe
06:13he times, whereas, you know, Tyson, you've got a million questions when it comes to injuries,
06:18right. And Tyson's interesting because the way I've heard him described pretty commonly by NFL
06:23people is he's a six foot two guy who moves like he's five, 10, really great route runner,
06:28but not as tough as you might like. And again, you get the injury question. And then with Lemon,
06:32Lemon's got all the toughness in the world. Um, he's a, he's a really good all around receiver,
06:37very polished, but you know, the question is, is he just a slot, you know? So Tate is the one,
06:43I think of the other guys there that like, where you probably have the fewest questions,
06:48good size, good toughness, good length, um, good speed, not great speed. Um, really good route
06:55runner, really good kid, really good football IQ. I'd say it's, it's probably not one thing more
07:00as much as it is like the amount of boxes that he checks. Albert, we can't escape Miles Garrett
07:06rumors in innuendos. Uh, it's been a few weeks now since Andrew Barry said he's a Cleveland Brown for
07:12life. Miles Garrett will be. And yet we've got people still speculating about him, you know,
07:18no showing to voluntary training camps, which he's done historically, uh, the, the contract
07:23adjustment there's, uh, you know, Dan Graziano saying that miles is more likely to the contract
07:29extent, uh, rather contract extension or a raise out of all of this. So I'm going to give you two
07:34very strong bookends here and you choose what is more likely. Uh, miles Garrett is at some point
07:41post June one, a move by the Cleveland Browns traded elsewhere or miles Garrett gets a new
07:47contract. What do you think is more likely? Oh, geez. I told you it was going to be tough. Um,
07:54yeah. I mean, I just don't know if they're going to give him a new contract this soon. Um,
08:04I mean, if it was traded in 2027 or a new contract, I'd say trade them in 2027. I don't
08:09know if they're
08:10going to do it this year though. Um, so I guess the new contract would be, I just don't think
08:17either
08:17of those scenarios are very likely right now, but that's just me. You know, I, I, I, I, I think
08:22if
08:22they were going to trade him, they would have probably traded him by now. Um, I I've been on record
08:29saying that I think it would be logical and be smart to trade them. I wouldn't argue with trading
08:32them after the draft either, but I think if they are going to trade them, it's more likely at the
08:37deadline or after the year. How much of the miles discourse is about like what the compensation
08:43could be in return? Is it a, I, I don't know what you think the value would be. I guess
08:47maybe we can
08:47start there. What do you think the value would be in a return for miles Garrett? I mean, I don't
08:52know
08:52if you get three first round picks for them. Cause it's hard to get three first round picks for
08:55anybody who's not a quarterback, but like, I think you'd be talking about something maybe
08:59equivalent to that. Like, would it be two ones, a two and a three, I think it'd be two
09:04ones plus a lot or three ones, I guess would be my answer. And I think one of the things,
09:09one of the reasons why I would look at moving him now is cause that's not going to be the
09:13value forever, you know? And like whether he gets hurt, he has a bad month at the end of
09:19the year that people might ascribe to his age. I mean, he's 30 now. So like, I, I think
09:25that there's just, there's more of a chance now that I, that, that, that his value starts
09:30to taper off a little bit. Um, then there was a couple of years ago. So like, you know,
09:36you're looking at the idea, do you trade him now or do you put yourself in a position where,
09:42you know, you get to the middle of the year or the end of the year. And now he's looked
09:46at a little bit differently and teams might not be as willing to give up high end draft capital
09:50to go and get him based on, uh, the shrinking amount of time he has left in his prime. I
09:56think
09:56that that's been, that's been part of the reasoning for me all along. And part of why I
10:00actually advocated for trading him before the last trade deadline. Cause I just, I think the value
10:06you've gotten him now is fleeting just because of his age, nothing to do with this play just
10:10because of his age. And, you know, I'm not sure the timelines match up as far as like how quickly
10:16the Browns are going to be able to get themselves in the true championship contention versus what's
10:22left of his prime. So it's interesting. Obviously miles wanted Jim Schwartz as the head coach. Uh,
10:29they went Todd Munkin, um, obviously miles wants to, to compete and win for championships,
10:34but he did get the contract extension last year. Uh, it's, it's been a weird 12 months here. Do we
10:41know
10:41is any of this coming from the miles camp? Is there maybe more push maybe for miles,
10:47maybe unhappiness for miles than maybe we even realize? Not that I know of, but if he was
10:53frustrated, um, if he was frustrated 15 months ago, um, I don't know what's happened over the
11:01last 15 months to allay that, you know? Um, you know, I, like, I don't think he had a bad
11:06relationship with Kevin Stefanski. So it's not like firing Stefanski was a plus. Um,
11:11like you said, like, I think he would have applauded a hire of Jim Schwartz. That didn't
11:15happen. So, you know, I just kind of like look at the totality of it and it's like,
11:19okay, like, so what improved the situation here, or he still wouldn't have it in the back
11:24of his head that he wants to go compete for a championship. I think of course that's in
11:27the back of his head. Um, he's a competitive guy. I think competing for a championship matters
11:32to him. His legacy matters to him. And I think he understands he's only got so many swings left
11:37at that. And so like, I think it should be human nature. Now I don't know, but
11:41I think it'd just be normal. It'd be, it'd be, it'd be human nature for him to look at this
11:45and
11:45say, I mean, man, like if, if we're not going to get on our horse here and compete for a
11:49championship soon, I may have to do it somewhere else. All right, Albert, I want to share a little
11:54theory I have with you here. Uh, the Knicks owner Dolan, when he bought, uh, when he bought the
11:58sphere in Las Vegas, he started working on that and it got him distracted. And then you notice over
12:02the, like the couple of years that he was gone working on the sphere, all of a sudden Knicks
12:05basketball started to be good again. They started to like be competitive and it was like,
12:09how is this happening? It's well, he's distracted. He's over working on the sphere. Uh, where
12:13there's a report out of Milwaukee that, uh, Jimmy has them wants to have the majority ownership
12:18of the bucks and the controlling interest within the Milwaukee bucks. And it's like very close
12:22to being done. And they're almost there as a Browns fan. Should you be rooting for that
12:26to happen? Cause it almost takes him away from the Browns as often as he is, or is that not
12:31something that ever really exists when you have an NFL owner? I mean, I, I think the cross
12:38ownership thing is interesting because I do think it gives your team some resources, but
12:41the Browns already have, you know, they already have that resource and the connection to the
12:45bucks. Um, you know, I, I don't know how much it would change. Jimmy's always, Jimmy's always
12:52struck me as somebody who's passionate about football first. You know, he's got the soccer
12:55team obviously too. And I, I don't know that anything would take his primary focus away
13:01from football. Um, you know, I think he realizes what a good investment professional sports
13:06franchises are now. I mean, what other business can you buy into? It's guaranteed appreciation,
13:10you know, or, or are you going to get value back for what you bought? Um, and so I, do
13:16I
13:16think it intrigues him the idea of running an NBA team? Sure. I'm sure it does. He wouldn't,
13:19you know, he wouldn't have gotten involved in the first place if it didn't. Um, I, it could
13:25cause him to delegate a little bit more. I think that that's fair, but I don't think
13:28like you're going to see him like pushing back from the table. If he, if he winds up
13:32buying the bucks, Albert, I was out and about this weekend and you know, uh, part of the,
13:38part of the, the reason to move on from Baker and go to Deshaun four years ago was you looked
13:43at the AFC, you looked at the AFC North, you needed a franchise quarterback just to be
13:47in the Superbowl conversation. And now four years, five years later, Jalen Hurts has won
13:53a Superbowl, uh, not perceived to be a, you know, uh, elite franchise caliber guy, Sam
13:58Darnold winning one this last year. Do you think that, uh, it is the era of a non elite
14:05Superbowl winning quarterbacks here to stay?
14:09No, I mean, I think it's, I think it just sort of illustrates where you're at, you know,
14:14and like that, like there is a way to do it and the way to do it is to build
14:18a really great
14:19team around him. Now, you know, the Jalen Hurts example, you look at the Eagles and they've
14:24spent cash over cap over the last three, four years to the point where their cap debt is
14:29like almost insurmountable, you know, like they're going to have to take a couple of
14:32years reset at some point to clean everything out. Um, and that's a credit to their owner.
14:38They've been willing to spend like that, but they basically circumvented the whole, like
14:43you will, you know, once you get a quarterback on a big contract, it changes everything. Um, you
14:48know, Seahawks obviously had Sam Darnold on a much more affordable contract and they've
14:52drafted really well. I think the blueprint was always there. You know, the blueprint is
14:57that you draft really well, you find a way to keep your own and definitely well behind
15:02your core. Um, and you eventually build to a point where you've got good, affordable
15:08talent in your roster is playing like front end players. You've got a really good core that
15:12you're paying. Um, and then that lifts up the quarterback, but I I'd say over the years,
15:18there's no question as quarterback pay play is out as quarterback pay has elevated as like the
15:24rules have kind of leaned into the quarterback becoming more and more important. It's become
15:29harder to win without a great one. And that path to doing it has gotten narrower. It's just that,
15:36you know, organizations like the Seahawks and Eagles are so well run that they can pull it off.
15:41Albert dynamic stuff is always my guy. We got one more hit before the NFL draft.
15:47Can't wait for that. And, uh, hope you have a great week, buddy.
15:51All right. Thanks guys. Have a good one.
