00:00i was telling you guys off the air my my job when i had one what my job when i
00:06had one was to try to
00:07extract news from a situation like that and my job when i had there's really not much news coming
00:13out of andrew barry today because i retirement mr associative press emeritus he covered yes i'm
00:20jealous tom i hear you he covered all the ground there just wasn't much um much to come out of
00:27it
00:27um i want one serious nugget about jadevian clowning go ahead yeah yeah yeah we're hopeful we can add
00:33him to the team and that um reconciliation is possible in life yes i like that i like that
00:40line as well said he liked him here for two years and things and i did love this i we
00:46gotta we gotta
00:47use this um jeff should have asked him about jadevian and training camp and andrew didn't
00:53take that question very well and he said when he's had a hearty camp yeah i'm sure jadevian jd
01:01has used that line very often i've never heard anyone say andrew as long as i have a hearty camp
01:05i'll get you 10 sacks um i did i'd like a hearty training camp please just gonna say i've heard
01:12hearty used to describe a meal i've never heard it used to describe exercise i did think it was
01:17interesting that he he characterized connie's departure as a moment of weakness i thought that
01:22was a little bit interesting um but then you know reiterated they've had a good good relationship
01:26with him you know they did have him for two years they understand who clowny is jeff you know we
01:31talked
01:32about that before and you know as you brought up earlier i think he would be a nice addition to
01:37this
01:38this group i think he would would give them something good good god he gives that defense something
01:42else the uh and then he explained kind of what we were talking about earlier you look at the
01:49defensive end position and i i thought it was a little light though you know leading into this
01:56camp yeah and then he said it's like like lines in hockey you know one group out one group in
02:01absolutely and you keep you rotate those defensive linemen and keep them fresh well and then let's not
02:06forget they begin the year with back-to-back games in that florida heat so they are going to need
02:11some
02:12fresh legs down there it's going to be it's going to be toasty um i like to hear you know
02:16once again
02:17he raved about verse and his rare work ethic um you know and how how connected this d-line room
02:24seems to be already which is a very a very positive thing in terms of the quarterbacks
02:30really wouldn't go there kind of you know punted the ball over to coach monk and used his line from
02:35yesterday we need to have a starting quarterback named by week one correct and then um also said he
02:41wouldn't rule anything out so i think every everything's on the table there and we'll we'll see where
02:46today takes us um yeah i got a kick out of the um the billy bob thornton reference to boy
02:52he went
02:52on that one did tommy norris and landman he'd been waiting for that one by the way and i consider
02:57myself a little bit of a uh tv series aficionado i've not watched landman no and i've heard really
03:03good good things about it so i'll have to check it out um bob's fun i liked how he described
03:08monken's personality though as old school discipline combined with new school relationships
03:14and you know a guy that a guy that understands that um you know he's been around the block a
03:19few times
03:19right he he gets it he understands that you know the the 40 year old and the 20 year old
03:24and he can
03:25kind of he can work in both worlds and i think that's real important that's not a that's not a
03:29knock
03:29on on stefanski either i think he's the same kind of guy but a different kind of personality sure
03:35you know and and and oh by the way which by the way everybody has one exactly and now this
03:40is todd
03:41in a new role too so we can we'll have to see how long he can maintain that kind of
03:46a persona with
03:47his players um are we going to call todd billy bob like crazy so somebody's going to do something
03:54there that'll be fun we'll we'll see what that that's going to have to be the first question out
03:58of the gate here today it would be mine todd'll crack up and that'll be fun but i i did
04:05like as you mentioned tom the explanation that andrew went into about the way he's able to deal
04:10with people and well let's let's be honest if if you don't adapt you know you're not gonna you're
04:15not gonna continue in that profession exactly right and so he has and he's been able to do it
04:20i you know i i've heard him speak in press conferences we've seen him on the field and things
04:27like that i it looks like the type of coach you would like to play for i totally agree and
04:32there's
04:32nothing wrong with being coached there's nothing wrong with a guy you know getting on you a little
04:38bit if you're not doing something right away you know you kind of want to hear it don't you you
04:43do
04:43and you know and that's something that over the years jeff that i heard and i'm sure you did as
04:48well
04:48you know in your time covering the teams around town you know the true professionals want to be
04:54pushed they want to they you know they want to get the best out of their own abilities and sometimes
04:59it takes a you know a swat in the butt to to get you there and i i think it
05:03is the the the good
05:04coaches are the ones that figure out you know how to maximize guys and and their potential and so
05:11um and i you know listen todd isn't a has not had a game yet so everything is still in
05:17that
05:17that honeymoon phase but um gotta like everything i've heard about him so far you know this is a
05:25bigger picture this is about any profession any person anything like that but in pro sports i think
05:33it gets magnified and and it's this though these guys are the absolute elite at what they do it
05:42doesn't necessarily mean they're self-motivators and that's where coaching comes in so many guys are
05:48driven and you don't have to worry about them at all but some guys there's a handful that yeah and
05:56those are the guys that you have to you have to get to and you have to they have to
06:02buy into what
06:03you're doing because they might not be self-motivated enough to get to where they need to get to and
06:07that's where your position coaches really come into play that's where you that's where those
06:11relationships are really formed and and fortified are you know when you're when you're working with a
06:17guy not only on the field but in the classroom and and behind the scenes and you really get to
06:20know
06:21to your point who they are and what makes them go and what makes them tick and how do i
06:25get the most
06:26out of him and do i have to be tough on him today and do i have to build up
06:29his confidence tomorrow
06:31whatever the case may be so that's that's the beauty of coaching right is kind of figuring out what
06:36you have to work with and and and trying to get the most out of it certainly had we've certainly
06:42had a
06:43bit of a youth movement all right good thank you we've all seen it it's kind of the first time
06:48that
06:48maybe he's put that into words and it's like hey look we we have a young team here we know
06:53it
06:54and now it's up to up to us to make that team mature a little bit and he quickly pointed
06:59out too that
07:00he's done some research to look at some of the young teams last year and how they did and oh
07:04by the
07:05way rattled off that a few of the younger teams were the green bay packers the philadelphia
07:11eagles the seattle seahawks and the baltimore ravens how'd that work in seattle yeah pretty
07:17well so it and it doesn't mean that and i think he's trying to just remind people that this is
07:23a
07:23young team it's going to make mistakes but it's a young team and it's going to get better as it
07:28goes
07:28on he was talking about how the expectations this year should be that they're going to put it you
07:33know they're going to try to put a competent team on the field obviously they hope to be more than
07:37that but they hope that it grows as the season grows and that they're playing their best football
07:42at the end you can say that for any team but it's even more important for a young team and
07:47one that's
07:48had a great rookie class and now another rookie class that you hope can continue that momentum tom i
07:54think it's fair to say everybody in pro sports would rather have a really talented young team than
08:01an old team that's hanging on to its talent we've seen both yeah and old teams that are hanging on
08:08to
08:08its talent can still get it done yeah but that young talented team just gets gets a fan base just
08:15really pumped up ultimately the key word is talented right and you know if you have a young team and
08:22you
08:22don't have very good talent well who cares you know you've got a young team that you're gonna have to
08:26scrap anyway if you have an old team that with no talent you're not employed anymore you've been
08:31fired as a general manager right but you don't hang on to jobs if that's what you've put together
08:35right but in this situation i i i'm thinking it looks like at least early on it looks like a
08:43group
08:43of young players who have some talent and now it's up to the team to bring them along and coach
08:49them up
08:49and see what you have exactly jeff and he doesn't want to use youth as an excuse while it could
08:54be
08:54right and i mean it is a reality it is reality and there will be times where you know youth
08:59can
08:59be excused for whatever mistakes are going to be made it's just it's inexperience or lack of
09:04experience so um yeah this is going to be um this is going to be an interesting ride all year
09:10jeff i
09:11think it's we're going to see you know much like other young teams we've seen we're going to see some
09:16some great moments and we're going to see some that are just going to drive you bananas
09:20and i just hope i just hope coach munkin and his staff can kind of endure those and i think
09:26the good thing from that standpoint is that you know as as uh andrew pointed out the uh the old
09:33school discipline the new school relationships um todd has seen enough to know that there's going
09:39to be ups and downs here so um buckle up as you just said billy bob thank you the young
09:45team that'll
09:46you know drive you bananas and everything and i immediately in my head it just popped and that's
09:52why you have to have a quarterback who knows what he's doing always helps it always comes back to that
09:57tom yeah it always comes back to that
