00:00now talking about the browns at six talking about trading down talking about all the shenanigans
00:04that can happen we are eight days away from the nfl draft the countdown continues and we head out
00:09to the make it right call kyle wright hotline and welcome on espn nfl draft analyst matt miller
00:16joining us right now matt welcome to the show hey guys thanks for having me i appreciate it
00:22well it's great to have you you're one of the best in the business and today has been
00:28browns mock draft trades with dallas cowboy days we're still working on the branding there
00:33uh do you think it makes as much sense for the cowboys to trade up to six as it does
00:38for the
00:38browns to move down into the teens i'm wrestling with it probably like you guys all are i mean i
00:44i don't think dallas is one defensive player away from contending i also think dallas's front office
00:51could believe that they're one defensive player away from contending so you have the like logical
00:55inside your brain that's like why would you trade two first round picks for a linebacker and then
01:00you go oh it's jerry jones right and so it's it's tough when you have my job sometimes you have
01:05to
01:05throw them up the window and remember who you're talking about that's making these decisions so
01:09could dallas do it yes i guess sunny styles would be great in their defense however i do look at
01:16cleveland and say gosh at some point you'd like to just stay at six and take the player and i
01:21last year you were two trade out to five mason graham could end up becoming a fantastic player
01:27that's not as big of a slide back um as this year's would be but i i would be convicted
01:32to
01:33just stick and pick at some point if you're cleveland like you need blue chip players blue
01:37chip players tend to exist at the top of drafts yeah we won that trade down though so i feel
01:42like
01:42it's like like the abs challenges in baseball like it gets it until he until he doesn't win
01:47right i mean it was shinger's a stud fanon's a stud yeah i mean i i loved the pick the
01:52trade
01:52last year at the time i was like what the hell are they doing but you know that's the beauty
01:56of
01:56hindsight is and i i kind of go back to that like cleveland needs more good players so you can
02:01see
02:02the trade back from that standpoint i don't know that you know moving back you know to 12 and 39
02:08is
02:09enough to get it done if you're the the cowboys like i think you probably need to give up a
02:14little bit
02:14more if you're gonna get up to that number six spot all right so who is it at six then
02:19what game
02:20changing player are the browns going to take well you know i would take carnell tate if he's there i
02:26would stay in state take the wide receiver from the school that you know really doesn't produce bust
02:30at that position and no you don't have a quarterback yet unless you're like my buddy mel kiper jr who
02:36says
02:36they already have the quarterback right uh as of today we don't think they have their quarterback
02:40of the future but it would start to set the table for whomever that quarterback is i would want to
02:45build that infrastructure up for that quarterback and if you feel like you know the receivers that
02:49are going to be on the board at 12 are worth it or if the offensive tackles that are going
02:52to be on
02:52the board at 12 are worth it then i think that's where you can entertain that discussion but if you
02:57stick and pick at six and take carnell tate and then you come back on the board again you know
03:02a
03:02little bit later in round one and you can get an offensive tackle like a monroe freely i i like
03:07that better
03:09than moving back to 12 and taking caden proctor which i saw one of the mock drafts today and then
03:13at 24 you're looking at one of the wide receivers matt um i i have two absolutes we're talking about
03:20individual prospects uh in specific spots for the offensive lineman i don't ever want to have to
03:26motivate you and for a wide receiver i don't want to ever have to question if you're going to catch
03:31the
03:31ball and two players the browns have been linked to at six and 24 are caden proctor who people say
03:38man if he just wants it he'd be great and casey concepcion who no concepcion so i'm very curious
03:44like it is my am i off base and how i feel about this because i look at these guys
03:48and i'm like
03:49you're both violate my non-negotiable for your position no i'm actually with you a lot on those
03:55and for caden proctor the reason i don't have him rated as highly as some of my counterparts
03:59dude was 390 in the fall and had to play it's like shack in the playoff he had to play
04:05himself
04:05into shape right and so like that scares me when you're talking about a player that you're going to
04:09entrust with the blind side of your offensive line and then i'm going to do a conception i think 24
04:14is
04:14rich for him i really do i i would prefer a denzel boston in that spot if those are the
04:19receivers that
04:19are going to be available i also think you have a player who did a lot of his damage uh
04:23or near the
04:24line of scrimmage he's he's kind of billed as being this downfield threat but a lot of his dirty work
04:28was done and within the first three yards of the line of scrimmage so if that's the if that's what
04:33happens thursday night and we're looking at cleveland with proctor and conception you would
04:38say that's a high upside first round right you that is you're betting on the upside you're betting
04:42on development with those two guys you mentioned some combo basically of offensive lineman and wide
04:47receiver is there any chance the browns leave with a double up offensive lineman at six and 24 or a
04:53double up wide receiver at six and 24 or do you just not see that being practical i can't see
04:59the
04:59double up a wide receiver um i think double up on the offensive line wouldn't be the worst idea you
05:04know just because there's i think there's more question marks and answers on this offensive line
05:08right now you know and like what what is the future for dewan jones you know what is what is
05:13the outlook
05:13there so i wouldn't be shocked if it you know okay we go tackle at six whether maybe maybe francis
05:21now you know it slides to six okay let's take him at six and then at 24 maybe you're saying
05:25we'll take
05:26the francis the guard from texas a&m who's kind of creeping his way into the top 32 the closer
05:31we
05:31get to next week matt um i know i'm hearkening back to carnell tate i definitely have come around
05:38to the idea of well if he's a darn good wide receiver this is kind of a wonky draft take
05:43it take
05:44it take a darn good wide receiver from ohio state i know people love comps i kind of want to
05:49go like
05:50the number one receiver versus number two where do you think he profiles in the nfl in terms of
05:56like can he be a top 10 receiver top 20 receiver top 30 receiver top 40 receiver i think he
06:03could be
06:03a top 10 receiver and i'm not trying to hedge on this some of that just depends on does he
06:08ever get
06:08the quarterback right but i think players like him you're seeing we're seeing it you know jsn uh we're
06:14seeing it with puka nakua we're seeing it with alman rossi guys who get open with route running
06:19for every xavier worthy who runs a 4-2-1 or whatever it is we have guys like they're not
06:25producing in the nfl guys that run sub 4-3 in the nfl like they're just not making the impacts
06:31they're
06:31not they don't have the stats and so i think when you look at the receiver position the way i
06:35look at
06:35it now is can you get open through route running can you get open through technique and leverage and
06:41understanding how to set a defensive back up to make sure you know do my first three yards always look
06:46the same am i just am i a proficient route runner that's carnell tate and i'll tell you when i
06:51first
06:51started watching him i was like gosh this reminds me of justin jefferson in college not jefferson with
06:57the vikings but similarly to that you know jefferson was he was overshadowed by jamar chase in college
07:03and then he goes to a team that has had some quarterbacks in there that can get him the ball
07:08and
07:08it has a very good offensive coordinator head coach and kevin o'connell and he's blossomed into i think
07:14most people would say one of the top three receivers in the nfl so i think with tate i love
07:19the makeup i love the traits now for him reaching his potential he's got to go somewhere where they
07:24have a quarterback and they've you know got to have a coordinator that can scheme him up a little
07:28bit otherwise you get wasted but i certainly think the potential's there peter schrager thinks that
07:33six wide receivers are going to be off the board by the time the browns pick at number 24 do
07:38you feel
07:38like the number is going to be that high we're going to have a a flurry of wide receivers taken
07:43by the
07:43time the browns get that second pick in the first round oh that would surprise me i hadn't heard
07:48that but the schrager is incredibly plugged in right so that's it's one of those things you hear things
07:53from someone like him and it makes you wonder you know and i think it's funny it might be six
07:57offensive tackles and six offensive linemen if it's going to go like that because i think the
08:01linemen are going to fly off the board so you know you can run through the top 24 and say
08:05yeah you
08:06know if if tate goes in the top six and then you've got lemon who could go to the saints
08:11tyson can go to the
08:12saints either one to go to the chiefs the dolphins can get involved the rams are expected to go
08:17receiver um so yeah i mean we could we could see a lot of them off the board by 24
08:21it's not crazy to
08:22think matt you're always so gracious with your time you kill it all darn year long and we know you're
08:29a huge part of what espn does and you're going to be a part of espn's broadcast for day three
