00:00we head out to the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle Wright hotline and welcome on
00:04of the MMQB Albert Breer joining us right now Albert happy Tuesday sir what's up guys how we
00:10doing oh we're just doing the mini camp thing and I've I've given myself a chance to overreact to
00:17the seesaw from one game to the next or one day to the next because quite frankly this feels like
00:23it's a lot of fun right now and I'm having a lot of fun with the emotional turbulence going from
00:27one quarterback to another on any given day yeah yeah it's um it's an interesting time of year and
00:33there's a lot of overreaction that goes on guys aren't wearing pads yet um you don't know on a
00:39day-to-day basis what they're trying to test them on and um you know I think this one still
00:44has a
00:44little ways to go but uh yeah I know it's not going to stop anybody from from charting you know
00:50completions and attempts and touchdowns and interceptions and all that so um you know I
00:56don't know how much that stuff means but I I know we're going to get that sort of stuff out
01:00of
01:00Cleveland and I know you know all the all the reporters there and a lot of good reporters
01:04there better and said uh at taking that stuff down yeah it's interesting I my read on it Albert is
01:09it
01:10feels like the the Browns came in there with the idea that Deshaun was going to win this job
01:13and now in the past week and a half or so they're more open to the idea that Chador has
01:18progressed
01:18and Chador looks better than maybe even they suspected uh I I don't know what your read on it is
01:24but
01:24I'm curious to find out if you think that's anywhere close to right yeah I mean my read is
01:28these things go back and forth a little bit like I've always and I think I've been like consistent
01:33with this like I I just think you know it's it's it's really important the Browns get a read on
01:39the
01:39quarterback position as a whole coming out of this year and um you know I I I just think logistically
01:45it's easier to go from Deshaun Watson to Chador Sanders than the other way around and you know I I
01:51think
01:51you know if there is still something there with Deshaun um and you know that he has been doing the
01:58right things this off season then you know you want to give him a shot and see what there is
02:02there
02:03before you know you're likely to let him go after the year whereas with Chador get him under contract
02:08for another two years after this one yes you want to see what you've got but I think there's a
02:12little
02:12bit less urgency on it so um I mean I I would tell you this like I I still think
02:18there's a pretty damn
02:19good chance that the quarterback for 2027 and going forward isn't on the roster yet but um the
02:26challenge for for for Todd Munkin and his staff is going to be how do we you know get the
02:31the best
02:32assessment of of of the quarterbacks on our roster and the best way to do that is to give each
02:37guy
02:38the fairest chance to to win the job and then to keep his job when they have it Albert uh
02:43Joe
02:43Batonio retired today I know you wrote a little piece about uh Joel and a conversation you had going
02:49back to to 2025 about you know his idea of when he might retire and his career in Cleveland
02:55but how do you view kind of Joel's legacy here in Cleveland and in the NFL after 12 years in
03:00brown and orange yeah I mean I just like I think it's just an unbelievable example of a guy who
03:06answered the bell every week um didn't complain about where he was at really wanted to make a
03:12difference in the the city that he was in and like you know the cool thing is I think really
03:18put
03:18value in being a guy who only put on one helmet only wore one jersey you know over the over
03:24the 12
03:24years he was in the league so um you know my experience with him was great um I thought he
03:29was
03:30um you know a real pro and you know somebody who when things got rocky and it happened a lot
03:37you know um over his 14 years he was kind of like the one of the steady forces in that
03:42locker room
03:43captain six times um you know I think like over the last I want to say it's the last I
03:49think the
03:49last nine years he's only missed two games which is that position is pretty remarkable um had a long
03:55streak that you know eventually was snapped um of of consecutive consecutive offensive snaps played um
04:03just I think checks every box and what you're looking for in a football player and um I don't think
04:08he'll be a pro football hall of famer but you know I think certainly somebody the Browns are going to
04:13be honoring sometime in the near future yeah you mentioned him being a one helmet guy and you know
04:18it's obviously not just with him it's Joe Thomas and then also the idea that for a lot of Browns
04:22fans
04:22we all thought Miles Garrett would be a one helmet guy and now he's not going to be I do
04:27you find that
04:27interesting is that like is that idea changing at least uh like just one helmet the entire career and
04:33and how how much maybe I don't know 20 years from now 25 years from now it just would be
04:38like
04:38nobody is that guy nobody does that well Tom Brady wasn't right Peyton Manning wasn't um Drew
04:45Breeze was not either you know I just think about that for a second but of course he was the
04:50Chargers
04:51at the beginning of his career Matthew Stafford isn't um you know we'll see with the homes
04:57uh but you know I it's it is it's becoming increasingly more and more rare you know like so
05:05you do have your guys you know like Eli Manning um Philip Rivers Ben Roethlisberger there are a few
05:12guys that have made it through their careers and only played for one team but even the best like
05:17you know you see um a lot of variance and and whether or not those guys um wind up sticking
05:23at
05:24sticking it out at the end and so um I think you know there's a bunch of different reasons for
05:29that
05:29number one I think it's you know there's more avenues to guys being moved now I think there's
05:34more aggression um from general managers in general both in trading guys away and trading for guys so
05:41there are more avenues to guys changing teams um even the elite of the elite you know so I think
05:47there's like a bunch of different reasons for it but again like if we're in an environment where
05:52where Peyton Manning and Tom Brady um didn't finish their careers as as Colts and Patriots then
05:59you know I think you know it certainly stands to reason that that that anybody would be subject to
06:04that environment and also opens up like the idea for some of these guys that maybe the best thing for
06:10me is to go somewhere else at the end of my career if I'm not winning the way that I
06:13had hoped I would
06:14Albert I was kind of shocked given that the NFL's been around for over 100 years that in the
06:19Pro Football Hall of Fame there are 48 offensive linemen and just 17 guards and even more so like
06:26you look at the guard spot I think there's like three or four in the last 15 years and this
06:31is not
06:32to besmirch other positions but it just feels like it's not equitable considering how many offensive
06:38linemen play and how many good offensive linemen we've seen come through the NFL what do you make
06:43of Joel's kind of Hall of Fame case well I would say like there's a reason for that right like
06:49so um it's probably the same thing as safety and corner if I want to come up with an example
06:55for
06:56it right like which is I think safety is seen as the guys who can't play corner right like guards
07:01and centers are seen as the guys who can't play tackle you know and whether that's fair or not like
07:06I
07:06I think that's you see how they're drafted you see how they're paid um you know I think because of
07:12that dynamic you have to be that much better um at those positions that are non-premium position
07:19to to stand out enough to become a Hall of Famer I think it also exists on the defensive line
07:24there
07:24are far more edge players than there are defensive tackles and I don't even know that that's fair
07:29because a really disruptive defensive tackle like an Aaron Donald or a Chris Jones can make a bigger
07:35impact than a than a D end ever could you know so that that dynamic definitely exists um and I
07:42think
07:42you know like what it equates to is um you know like I would say like a corner right or
07:48a tackle
07:50like if you were top five at that position over the course of a decade you have a really good
07:55Hall of Fame shot where I think at like a position like a guard or a safety you pretty much
08:01have to have
08:01been the best player in the league at that position for an extended period of time right
08:05and you look at the safeties and it makes sense right like so the safeties that have gotten in
08:10um you know there are guys like you know Troy Palomalu and Ed Reed and John Lynch like guys who
08:16are considered the top of the top um I would say I would say the same thing you know with
08:23the guards
08:24like I I'm trying to think I'm racking my brain right now but like the guys who I think would
08:28have a
08:28chance to get in now um that are like the same era as as Joel would probably be like Quentin
08:35Nelson
08:36Zach Martin like there aren't very many of them yeah I threw Yonda in there as well yeah I mean
08:42Yonda would have a case but there aren't very many of them you know what I mean like and I
08:45think
08:45I think it's just kind of like whether that's perception the importance of the position whatever
08:49it is I I do think it's harder for a guard or a center to get in than it is
08:54a tackle I think
08:55to get in at one of those positions you have to be perceived as like you were the best player
08:59in
08:59the league at the position yeah sadly like Albert I I came up with Jari Evans is like if he
09:04gets in
09:04uh you know four four uh time first team all pro uh made a second team all pro as well
09:09but six time
09:09pro ball if he gets in and he's got the Super Bowl nod that we've discussed already like it like
09:14if he
09:14gets in maybe it paves the way for Joel but someone like Joel is probably like I don't know a
09:1910-year
09:19wait list and then and then like maybe just maybe yeah I mean I'm looking at the list now guys
09:25and
09:25hopefully AI isn't screwing me here on Google but I just historically awful when it comes to sports
09:31stuff by the way yeah yeah well I mean but I look at the names like John Hannah Larry Allen
09:37Gene
09:37Upshaw Alan Sanica Steve Hutchinson I mean like those are guys that were considered like the best
09:43player in the league you know what I mean like their position so like I think that that that's just
09:48again whether that's fair or not and I'm I'm I by the way I'm a small haul guy like I
09:54I I think it
09:55should be hard to get in you know like I think I think it should be really difficult to get
09:59in and
09:59um you know whether you think it's right or not like and I don't think it's that much easier to
10:05get in a tackle but like I think there's a little bit more leniency for that position than there is
10:10a
10:10guard Albert yesterday was an interesting day on the Brennan Soresby front this week in general
10:15all the outrage and all the you know I think even in your piece you talked about how just
10:20one-sided it was or rather how unanimous everyone was in the way they viewed the the injunction that
10:26Brennan Soresby got so I want to fast forward a year from now and let's say he does what he's
10:32supposed to do he plays really good football at Texas Tech there's no more gambling issues here
10:37how much does a year help how the view will treat Brennan Soresby or how the league will treat
10:43Brennan Soresby a year from now I think there's a good chance somebody would have spent a second
10:48round pick on him in the supplemental draft if he had if they had um turned down this they're
10:55turned down his request for the injunction which I mean I I don't even know I'm not sure that this
11:01really helps him that much to be honest with you like I I think you know this went from like
11:07a story
11:07that a lot of us knew about to like now a story that everybody knows about and his season is
11:11going
11:11to be a circus you know I mean I think he plays at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati in October is
11:17that
11:17right can you guys look that up so like if that isn't Pete Rose Day in Cincinnati and um you
11:25know
11:25what I mean like and that's where he transferred from so but that's what his season is going to be
11:30right like that's what the whole season is going to be for him so I I I'm interested to see
11:35the way
11:35that all that goes but from an ability standpoint like I think he's right up there with you know
11:40Dante Moore at Oregon Arch Manning at Texas CJ Carr at Notre Dame Julian Sane at Ohio State
11:46Lenore Sellers in South Carolina there are a lot of them this year it's a crowded group but
11:51like just from a physical ability standpoint like there are plenty of NFL people that I know you guys
11:57would respect if you know if you knew who was telling me this that that that think he's got a
12:02chance to be a top five pick it's October 24th yeah yeah there you go there you go I I
12:09again again
12:09like I think if if everybody's not wearing a Pete Rose jersey for that night um then the student body
12:15of Cincinnati's failed uh you know Albert oddly enough we've had a lot of Baker conversations over
12:19the past couple days uh you know our our Daryl Ryder suggested that he ends up with the Steelers next
12:24year uh what does this look like for Baker is he going to end up resigning with Tampa what's the
12:29market financially for him as well I think they're going to get something done um I think it's sort
12:37of it's interesting because they've been able to win um with Baker making about half of the top of
12:45the market right so um now you're looking at it and it's like okay like we got this great deal
12:52on him
12:54you can't get away with paying him that anymore you know what I mean like now it's like okay like
12:59look at what Jared Goff got when he went from reclamation project to like okay like he's
13:04re-established you have 55 from the Lions right look at what Tua got look at what Brock Purdy got
13:10like I
13:11I don't know like how like Baker could take less than 50 over the first three years 50 per over
13:19the
13:19first three years 55 total and new money average per year like I I think if you're Baker you have
13:25to
13:25be looking at that and that can be like a little bit difficult for the Bucs too because they got
13:29to
13:29wrap their arms around the idea of okay like now our model is going to have to change a little
13:34bit
13:34because we're going to have to pay this guy like he's one of the best players in the league you
13:38know
13:38and so it's it's at least interesting in that we've seen a couple of contracts like that whether
13:43it's Tua Tungvaloa or Kyler Murray we've seen a couple of those contracts now like kind of backfire
13:50so like I think that's where this is a little sticky I would also say this like the Buccaneers
13:57over the last couple of years uh Antoine Winfield is an outlier he got paid earlier because of like
14:02the franchise tag deadlines and logistics and all that but the guys they've extended recently so
14:07Tristan Wirfs their left tackles I'm a column a star corner for them um you know Luke Kadecki
14:14their their their right tackle they paid those guys like after the start of training camp um and
14:21Baker said like he wants to be paid for that so we'll see how all that goes over the summer
14:25Albert uh for somebody who has no rooting interest in the J.J. McCarthy Kyler Murray quarterback battle
14:33I cannot turn away some of the content that we've gotten this offseason there was J.J. McCarthy's weird
14:39press conference and weird handling of kind of the answer of his relationship with Kyler
14:43there was Kevin O'Connell calling J.J. a former captain before then being like uh transitioning
14:49to something else there Justin Jefferson raving about uh Kyler Murray and his ball placement and
14:55then being like I'm also excited to see J.J. show up at camp I'm just I I'm coming away
15:00from this
15:00feeling there's a guy that's not entirely invested and hasn't paid incredibly close attention starting
15:06to wonder maybe should the Vikings have traded J.J. McCarthy back in April because it doesn't seem like
15:12anyone's really happy with where this thing is with him and his career and certainly his place in
15:17Minnesota and I don't think so I mean it's June you know you spent a first round pick on the
15:22guys
15:22said you guys for three months how the you know the the Browns owe it to themselves to find out
15:28on
15:28Watson um for the same sorts of reasons I think the Vikings owe it to themselves to to find out
15:33on
15:33McCarthy you know um it's you know we have three months ago till the start of the season Kevin O
15:40'Connell
15:40has plenty of runway to make a decision on what he's going to do at quarterback um like I I
15:47just
15:47think you know like the way you did it last year was sort of the opposite of this and they
15:51tried to
15:52put competition in the room they tried to bring back Sam Darnold they tried to bring back Daniel Jones
15:56both those guys found better deals elsewhere and so they made the decision they pivoted and said okay
16:01like we're going to go forward with J.J. McCarthy as the quarterback we're going to give him all the
16:06reps we're going to we're going to let the rest of the team know that he's the guy and we're
16:10going
16:10to see where he where he takes it when we give him the baton and we know how that's finished
16:13so now
16:14they've effectively taken him off scholarship and now it's you're competing and this is dog eat dog and
16:20and maybe they'll bring a different result we'll see you know but I I actually think a lot of this
16:26is by design you know and that they want to see how he reacts to having his back against
16:31the wall and they've given themselves a really good insurance policy and and having Kyler Murray
16:37there as a guy who's led a team to the playoffs before so um yeah you're right from a content
16:42standpoint it's great and and and and and look like I I like I don't think these guys have to
16:48pretend to like each other either um you know they're both I mean you know J.J. I think established
16:55himself as a high level competitor when he was in college and I mean Baker and Kyler Murray if you
17:00look at him over the course of his football life some of the stuff he's accomplished one of the
17:05greatest high school football players in the history of the state of Texas um a Heisman trophy
17:09winner in Oklahoma like this is a guy who's had some pretty high-end success too so it'll be
17:15interesting to see how it plays out Albert you're the best buddy appreciate you thanks guys appreciate it
