00:00We got him. Let's go to the hotline. Let's welcome in Daryl Ryder. He's brought to you by...
00:05Driving Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:07Good morning, Daryl. It's happening. Happy opening day to you, my friend. Do you hate the Cubs?
00:13I hate the Cubs, no. Kind of annoyed that that's who the Guardians actually open up with, though.
00:20Interesting. Why is that?
00:22Well, I don't know. I kind of feel like they're one of those teams that could draw at the gate,
00:30and I never like it. It's like the Yankees or the Red Sox.
00:34I never like when the Guardians get those games early.
00:38Don't waste it.
00:38Yeah, I think they benefit better at the gate if those are later in the year.
00:42Totally agree. I remember the first time we had them since the 2016 World Series,
00:46and it was like the middle of the week, and cold weather in April at the beginning of that season.
00:51The Yankees have been early in the year the last few years.
00:55They're not this year, but they're a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
00:58So which would you rather have on that? At least you get a weekend here.
01:02So, Daryl, go ahead.
01:03They had an April where the Yankees and Red Sox both came through.
01:09And I remember some of the reaction from the Guardians.
01:15They were less than pleased with that development.
01:19But, yeah, I hate the Cubs.
01:22No, I just, you know, I just put it this way.
01:27I don't like the Marlins more so than the Cubs.
01:30Actually, I would probably agree with that.
01:32Daryl Ryder joining us here on the show.
01:34Jeremiah Love, you said if the Browns took him at six, it would be terrible roster construction.
01:39Explain yourself, Daryl.
01:40Well, they already took two running backs, but I also said as part of that that I wouldn't have a
01:47problem.
01:48You know, him, Tate, Caleb Downs, one of those three guys.
01:55And I think the jackpot for Andrew Barry would be if all three of those players are available at six
02:01because I still believe that the for sale sign is sitting there on that number six overall pick.
02:08And that would help Andrew Barry out immensely in his efforts to move down.
02:13But, yeah, it's similar to the quarterback thing, right?
02:17If they draft Ty Simpson and then come back next year and draft another quarterback, that'd be four quarterbacks in
02:26three years that they will have drafted.
02:29And that just, that again is...
02:31Well, I'm not having, I don't, I didn't want to talk to you about Ty Simpson yet.
02:35No, I know, but I'm just saying that, like, you know, you draft three running backs in three years, that's
02:40not great.
02:41What makes Love appealing to me, though, is that he's kind of, you can use him as a hybrid player.
02:48You can put him in the slot.
02:50He can score from the slot.
02:54He can score from the backfield.
02:55He is an explosive, game-changing type player.
02:59But, again, you drafted two running backs last year.
03:01So, I don't know that spending your highest draft pick this year would be the smartest way to go about
03:10your roster construction when you have other needs.
03:12Yeah, I'm with you, Daryl.
03:14I can't fathom a world where they take another running back and use that premium draft pick to go running
03:20back when it's a luxury.
03:23Running backs are a luxury.
03:24And now you're taking your third in two years.
03:26And it kind of then immediately invalidates the Judkins pick a year ago.
03:30Because what are we?
03:30What year are we that we're going to do a two-headed monster?
03:33Like, I just can't see that.
03:35It's not that I don't think he's a good player.
03:36And, yeah, people are going to say best player available.
03:39But I don't think the Browns are in that position where they can just do something like that, especially after
03:45last year's draft.
03:46So, maybe I'm just wasting time on it now because I agree with you.
03:50Yeah, and, you know, Caleb Downs, I think they could do that.
03:57I think that's possible, mostly because of the fact that Grant Delpit is in the final year of his contract
04:05right now.
04:07And you could, you know, really justify that, A, he's a great player, okay?
04:13But also, too, you do something that you've not been able to do, and that is fortify your roster against
04:22potential free agency losses.
04:24And you naturally turn that roster over.
04:28And this is what great teams do.
04:31Look at the Patriots, the Eagles, the Packers, even to a degree the Steelers, where they just always seem to
04:39find a way.
04:40The Ravens, they just seem to find a way to recycle their rosters over and over again without having drop
04:46-off in performance on the field.
04:48Darrell Ryder joining us here on the show.
04:50See, my issue with all this is, and I see where you guys are at.
04:54I'll be respectful about it.
04:55You know, I talked to Coach Lance on Wednesday.
04:57He was in for Tone, and he tried to sell me on Jeremiah Love.
05:01And I have felt the same way you guys did, but I don't want to be completely closed off.
05:06Ty Simpson at six, I'm completely closed off.
05:08That's basically the one guy I'm closed off to.
05:11But when it comes to Jeremiah Love, I know they've taken running backs before, but I find myself, you know,
05:15I think there's a lot of teams that are willing to trade down.
05:18And so if I'm trying to get a team to trade up, am I going to take less?
05:24Because if I'm another general manager, I'm going to go, this draft ain't very good.
05:27You want me to trade up with you?
05:28I'm not going to give you what you would usually get in another draft.
05:31So if you're Andrew Berry, am I going to take less than market value for this choice, or am I
05:38going to bite the bullet and take a very good player and then leave it on my football team to
05:43figure out how to use him?
05:44Because if Jeremiah Love is that productive and that good, and I can't get that much for that pick, I
05:50think I'm just going to take Jeremiah Love and say to hell with you.
05:53It's up to this good coaching staff that we've just chained out that's supposed to be better offensively to make
05:58this guy work with Quinchon Judkins and everybody.
06:00Yeah, I don't know that Andrew Berry is going to make the type of trade he was able to make
06:09with Jacksonville last year because of what everyone's anticipating will be such a loaded quarterback class in 2027.
06:18I don't know that a lot of teams are going to be willing to give up 2027 draft capital, at
06:24least first round draft capital.
06:27So, and that's if you make a trade like that, Ken, where you're sliding back from six, that's probably what
06:32you want, right?
06:33I mean, you already have five picks in the top, what is it, 110 or whatever.
06:39So you already this year have tremendous draft capital, and I don't know that you need, you know, another pick
06:47this year.
06:48It's next year that you want to load up on so that you provide yourself with flexibility.
06:53But again, I don't know that teams are going to be willing to do it because they want to sit
06:57around and see what that draft class is going to look like.
07:00All right, Darrell, we saw some new videos emerge of the svelte, is that the correct word for DeJuan Jones,
07:09playing basketball, you know, looking like a, looking like, he did, he looked very good.
07:15Looking good, I'm happy.
07:16Now, I don't know about playing basketball for somebody whose first three seasons in the NFL have resulted in season
07:22-ending injuries.
07:22Why are you going to keep them in shape?
07:23But that is one way that, you know, maybe swimming.
07:25Basketball's hard.
07:26Swimming's a good way to do that, burn the calories.
07:31I guess so.
07:32Maybe where he's at, there's not a pool very close.
07:34Maybe, and he's very tall, so maybe he needs Olympic-sized pools.
07:38Either way, Darrell, what do you make of that?
07:40Is he a legitimate candidate to be a starter on this offensive line?
07:45If he's healthy.
07:46I mean, that's what it comes down to.
07:48The problem for him, at least from my standpoint, hasn't been so much the talent.
07:54It's been his health.
07:56I go back to his rookie season when he was pressed into service.
08:00He was playing before he got hurt, like one of the best left tackles in the National Football League at
08:05the time.
08:06So, unfortunately, he's just been bit by the injury bug pretty much every year.
08:11And that has affected his weight.
08:15It's affected his conditioning and all those things.
08:19So, if he's healthy, if he can stay healthy, sure.
08:23But I have a lot of reservations about being able to trust and believe that he's going to be able
08:30to stay healthy.
08:31And I'm not all that crazy about him playing basketball, but if that's what he's got to do to keep
08:41himself in shape.
08:42I get real nervous about guys that have injury history doing other contact sports is extracurricular activities.
08:53Darrell, I think you and I are going to agree with each other.
08:55Was it his first year in this league with Bill Callahan?
08:58Yes.
08:59Okay, so this is where I go on this.
09:01Bill whipped him into shape.
09:02Exactly.
09:03And that is a fact.
09:04That is not being cute or funny.
09:06One of the worst things that happened for him in his career is that they hired Andy Dickerson.
09:11Who, I mean, really just was not cut out to do the job.
09:17Right.
09:17Was not cut out to do the job whatsoever.
09:19And I think it is – the injuries are the injuries, but, I mean, you looked at how he came
09:22into camp the next year.
09:24Right.
09:24It is – had Bill Callahan – like, sometimes you've got to let – or you've got to let guys
09:29go coach with their sons, right?
09:31But if you made a better hire than what you made after Bill Callahan, maybe we're not having these conversations
09:36about DeJuan Jones.
09:37Maybe we're not worried about left tackles.
09:39Maybe we're not freaking talking about Monroe Freeling at number six or Caden Proctor at number six.
09:44And no offense to those guys, but these guys aren't number six overall guys.
09:48No, 100%.
09:49And that's – it highlights how important your coaching staff really is because here we are years later, and this
09:53is the reason we're having these discussions.
09:55Yeah, well, and you can also go all the way back to the Jed Wills selection as well.
10:00Yes.
10:01You know what I mean?
10:02So, George Warhop is a really good offensive line coach.
10:05He's been here before.
10:07Maybe he can come in and maybe undo some of the damage from the last couple of years from a
10:12coaching standpoint or whatnot.
10:13But, again, I think there's talent there with DeJuan.
10:17It's just – it's, you know, it's been other things that have prevented him, including injuries, from realizing that talent.
10:25Darryl, glad we were able to reel you in.
10:27Have a great day.
10:28Have a happy opening day.
10:30We'll talk to you next week, buddy.
10:31Enjoy the ballgame, boys.
