00:35could be totally wrong where are we with the quarterback situation well we ended up back at
00:42a uh a competition between these two guys when i think some of us thought that perhaps uh deshaun
00:49had edged ahead a little bit not necessarily uh winning the competition but when he took those
00:56first team reps on saturday i think there was a general sentiment that perhaps this was pretty
01:02significant but todd tells us yesterday not so they're still alternating days and uh you know
01:09they're each going to get a game so this is going to go on for a while and it does
01:14concern me a little
01:15bit because i really do think that the starting 11 has got to get working together the season opener
01:22is a month away and it's really really time to get these guys repping it over and over i couldn't

01:27with you more especially you have you have young skill position players and you have an offensive line
01:33that hasn't played together and the quarterback is supposed to orchestrate all of it pick one and
01:38let's go mary kay you're out there for all the practices has anybody a quarterback made you think
01:43yep i like that that should be the guy well i have my reasons uh for feeling like deshaun should

01:51the season and those reasons don't have uh you know everything to do with how i think they should
01:58necessarily finish the season i think that when you have a brand new offensive line five new starting
02:05guys we see a lot of procedural penalties out there when you have brand new terminology new play caller
02:11new young skill players everything is new i just think that would be a little bit of a tall order
02:17for a really young quarterback who hasn't even started a full season before uh so he's basically
02:23almost a rookie still uh intradar sander you're going to be starting two games on the road it's going to

02:30loud uh you don't know what the offense is going to look like yet how it's going to come together
02:34i just think that he would be better served by stepping into an offense that's a little bit more
02:40cohesive than what it might be in the beginning and so my feelings on this aren't just because i i
02:48think that deshaun would give them the best chance to win right now i think shador would do better a
02:54little bit later on do you think shador or shador's camp could see that if it happened like you make

03:00great case for why you wouldn't you know why you would wait until the season gets rolling a little
03:05bit before you would put him in there um i gotta believe there'd be a sense of frustration for him
03:09for his camp and you know i'm sure there are people saying well lebron should trade him so he can

03:14play somewhere else well i think there would be a sense of frustration on the part of a lot of

03:19including a lot of brown's fans right but you know if you take the sort of bird's eye view of

03:25and look at it what everybody should want is for shador sanders to be able to succeed and to play
03:32to his strengths and to know that that he's completely on top of it and that everybody else
03:38is too he might be on top of things but if you're uh you know if you're whatever your right
03:45guard isn't
03:46up to speed yet i'm just throwing that out there i don't sure i just mean that if you're five

03:51offensive linemen who by the way really haven't even played together yet if they're not necessarily
03:57ready or if your cadence isn't right 100 on point or your silent counts are off or your rookies aren't
04:05exactly sure where to get lined up i mean we're seeing things in practice that lead me to believe
04:11that this is going to take a little bit of time to gel and to come together and i think
04:17i would
04:17probably rather have that kind of situation in the hands of a veteran todd munkin yesterday saying
04:24that spencer fano is good to go he's your left tackle what does that mean for dewan jones and is
04:29there any possibility that he ends up starting at right tackle and titus howard gets moved to right
04:35guard or something like that mary kay i do think there is a world in which that could happen as
04:40long
04:40as dewan jones is one of the best five offensive linemen on this football team then i think they will
04:46try to find a place for him in the starting lineup now george warhop said the other day he doesn't
04:52really want to keep upsetting the apple cart and then move titus howard out of there and slide him
04:56over to right guard but in the event that dewan is one of the best five then i think there
05:04is possibly
05:05a world in which that could happen we'll have to see how that goes as time goes on but i
05:12don't think
05:12it would be the worst idea in the world um what how do you expect it to play out uh
05:19this first
05:19preseason game on set like i i think he was trying to tell us a little bit yesterday but i
05:24don't i don't
05:25know we got it so we're gonna see the starting quarterback with the starters for a little bit
05:29and then he's gonna switch in or like how do you think this thing plays out on saturday well he

05:35about a series yeah for the um for the starters now sometimes that ends up to be only three plays
05:44so uh so i think you have to maybe put a number of plays on it that you would like
05:48to see your
05:49starters together i think in a perfect world you would want to see them get nine or ten plays at
05:55least
05:55if you could and so we'll see how you know how this goes we'll ask him more about it today
06:00the depth
06:01chart is going to come out today so we'll have a better idea of maybe who the starting quarterback
06:06is it doesn't mean he has to hold to the depth chart uh but there should be one by today
06:11and uh
06:12you know and then i think he'll be able to give us more details on on who's going to do
06:16what and when
06:18what'd you make of the uh the jared verse and spencer fano fisticuffs the other day
06:25well todd really seemed to like that he that surprised me a little bit mary k
06:30yeah well he wanted they wanted to see that spark and actually i you know i i think that um
06:36i thought
06:36i saw that brian baldinger said sort of the same thing that he wanted to see uh you know that
06:42fight
06:42and that dog in spencer fano that that we've been hearing about and so it was there and it was
06:48out in
06:48full force and he really wouldn't back down to a two-time pro bowler and someone who has a lot
06:54of
06:54power and explosiveness and uh talks a lot of trash and and he really held his own so that's
07:02what todd wanted to see and it it swung the left tackle job in his favor how about the frustration
07:09from yesterday and you know because i got a feeling that these games might look like this early on
07:14especially pre-snap penalties and um just you know this organization i like they're asking five
07:20guys to play on the offensive line who've never played with each other at any point in their
07:25career you just it doesn't happen in the nfl it just doesn't happen well once again not only that
07:30they haven't really fielded the starting five together yet right right i mean spencer fano has
07:37been alternating with dewan jones and then there have been injuries at right guard and so they and
07:43titus howard wasn't at right tackle yesterday austin barber was and then when you get to the second
07:48team you're into your depth so there were a lot of new guys out there especially when the twos were
07:54in there and so it doesn't necessarily lend itself to a well-oiled machine and those guys have to learn
08:00to communicate with each other it takes a little bit of time we've always heard that the five
08:05offensive linemen have to be like the five fingers on a glove or how many other analogies you could come
08:11up with but they haven't had those guys working together yet and that's another reason why
08:17the starting 11 has got to get repping it over and over and over again and they would be best
08:22served by knowing who the starting quarterback is so you could get the cadences down and so you
08:27could start to hone that but i think uh you know the frustration for todd munkin with all the pre
08:32-snap
08:32penalties just boiled over yesterday and look his name is on this offense everybody's looking to see
08:38what the todd munkin offense is going to be able to do and as of right now it looks a
08:44little bit ragged
08:45mostly just because of those penalties we we know we have a new defensive coordinator no jim schwartz
08:52mike rutenberg here have you noticed a difference in the defense more so because of that mary kay
08:58or have you noticed a difference at all because it's jared verse and not miles garrett out there
09:04at defensive end well you know there's some different energy on the defense for sure
09:08mike rutenberg brings high intensity then you've got quincy williams he's very very chatty out there
09:17and very high energy and the same thing with jared verse so the the vibe has been ratcheted up very
09:24much so this is not a quiet defense they're loud uh you hear them every single moment when you're out
09:31there and they are fired up and i think once again this is a defense that is out to prove
09:36something
09:37they don't want to have been known as the miles garrett defense they want to show that they were
09:42a great defense in their own right and they're ready to go out there and keep the standard very very
09:47high
09:47they've been amazing this camp all right so what's our goal for saturday then what what what what what
09:54would be a successful uh first preseason game for this team get the starters out healthy uh knock off a
10:01little bit of rust and try as you might to not commit the pre-snap penalties if possible just a
10:08clean operation and no injuries that's simple i like it and clearly that that's what they have to do
10:16how good have the rookie wide receivers look to you mary k so good i mean so good that denzel

10:23jumped up to x receiver at least for this week but uh you know it's up to him now to
10:29hold that down
10:30and if he can do that uh then they can move jerry judy around and let him play to his
10:34strengths
10:35so denzel boston has been tremendous casey has been tremendous uh you know early on people wondered if
10:42casey was going to be dropping the ball we haven't seen that most of this entire camp uh he's been
10:48really really good and uh those two guys have really elevated this receiving core um i i just want
10:56to make sure so we think do you think deshaun's going to start i just double down on this do

11:02think deshaun's starting on saturday i really don't know but i would guess that that deshaun will get
11:09this start and that shador will get the start at home against the bills that's what i think is going
11:14to happen uh but i don't know for sure and we probably will know more today i don't even know
11:20if we
11:20will know who's going to start as of today but um but my guess is that it will be deshaun
11:26especially
11:26because they're talking about only starting the starters for about a series in this game so i would
11:33think get deshaun in there uh let him see what it's like to have that live rush coming at him
11:38after not
11:39playing for two years maybe get a little bit of contact and and just kind of get his feet wet
11:45a little
11:45bit before he has more playing time and i mean do you think that todd's good with where they are
11:52right now at this do you are because i'm we were talking earlier about you know he had wished that
11:56probably he would have known who his quarterback was at this point but that hasn't come to fruition
12:02well he's not good with where they are from just a clean operation standpoint he's not good with that
12:08i mean he threw his radio right after practice yesterday so you know that he was upset about that
12:13there were three false starts when shadour and the first teamers were in there and then there was a
12:19sack illegal formation uh false start when uh when deshaun was in there with the second team and no he
12:26was not happy about that and he's not going to be happy about that during the preseason game if it
12:31happens again uh so i think once they get through this week and through this preseason game i think he's
12:38probably really going to see the wisdom and making sure that he's got the 11 guys out there
12:43as much as possible together to get the cadences down uh to get the formations down to get the
12:49plays down everything's new for everybody and right now it just has a ways to go mary k as always
