A violent clash during a pre-wedding photoshoot at Bettada Byraveshwara Temple in Sakleshpur of Hassan district has sparked outrage, raising concerns over tourist safety and law and order.

According to reports, a group of photographers had arrived at the scenic temple location on Friday morning for a pre-wedding shoot when local youths allegedly objected to their presence and questioned permissions. The argument soon escalated into a physical assault.

The victims alleged that a group led by a local youth returned with 7–8 associates and attacked the photographers using sticks and stones. Naveenandan K.S. (21), a photographer from Hassan, stated in his complaint that he was choked, his gold chain was snatched, and camera equipment worth around ₹5 lakh was damaged.

Several photographers, including members from Bengaluru, sustained injuries and were shifted to Sakleshpur Government Hospital and Hassan District Hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, tension prevailed outside the Sakleshpur Rural Police Station, where photographers and local villagers engaged in a heated argument that escalated into a scuffle. Police intervened and brought the situation under control.

Based on complaints, a case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including rioting, unlawful assembly, assault, criminal intimidation, and damage to property. Police have arrested seven accused, including local residents such as Prashant Bettagere and Rakshay Makkinagadde, while a search is ongoing for others involved. A counter-complaint has also been filed, and both angles are under investigation.

The incident has taken a controversial turn, with allegations surfacing that some individuals linked to political and religious organisations attempted to pressure the victims into a compromise, allegedly offering ₹10–15 lakh to settle the matter. However, police have not officially confirmed these claims.

The attack, captured on video and widely shared on social media, has triggered widespread criticism, with many terming it “goondaism” and raising concerns over the safety of tourists and photographers at popular destinations.

Authorities are continuing the investigation and are expected to take further action based on evidence, including viral video footage.
