A woman jail official in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna has married a former inmate who once served a life sentence in a murder case, in a relationship that reportedly began inside the prison and later culminated in an interfaith marriage.

According to reports, Firoza Khatoon, an Assistant Superintendent at Satna Central Jail, met Dharmendra Singh while serving as the warrant in-charge at the prison. Singh, a resident of Chandla in Chhatarpur district, was lodged in jail in connection with the 2007 murder of a councillor and the burial of the body.

During his imprisonment, Singh allegedly assisted prison authorities with warrant-related work, which brought him into regular contact with Khatoon. Over time, their professional interactions reportedly developed into friendship and later a relationship.

Singh was released around four years ago after serving nearly 14 years in prison, reportedly due to good conduct. Following his release, the couple decided to formalise their relationship through marriage.

The wedding took place on May 5 in Chhatarpur district. Reports said Singh changed his name on the wedding invitation cards to avoid social scrutiny. The ceremony was conducted according to Vedic rituals and chants.

The interfaith marriage reportedly did not receive support from Khatoon’s Muslim family members, who did not attend the event. In their absence, Vishva Hindu Parishad district vice-president Rajbahadur Mishra and his wife performed the ceremonial ‘kanyadaan’. Members of the Bajrang Dal were also present during the ceremony.

The unusual marriage has become a major talking point in the region, drawing attention for the couple’s journey from prison interactions to marriage despite social and religious barriers.

Officials, employees and even inmates associated with Satna Central Jail have reportedly extended wishes to the newlywed couple.
