Panic at Ajmer Sharif Dargah After Youth Jumps Into ‘Badi Deg’

Panic briefly erupted at Rajasthan’s famous Ajmer Sharif Dargah after a young man allegedly jumped into the shrine’s giant ceremonial cauldron, known as the ‘Badi Deg’, inside the dargah premises.  The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed within the shrine complex.  According to eyewitnesses, the youth suddenly ran towards the massive cauldron while attendants and khadims attempted to stop him. However, before they could restrain him, he reportedly climbed into the Deg, triggering chaos among devotees present at the shrine.  Sources said cash offerings and jewellery donated by devotees were present inside the cauldron at the time of the incident.  Videos from the scene, which have now gone viral on social media, show the man sitting inside the Deg while caretakers and devotees repeatedly ask him to come out safely.  When repeated attempts to convince him reportedly failed, one of the khadims climbed into the cauldron himself and, after considerable effort, managed to pull the youth out safely.  Some reports also claimed that the youth was beaten by a few staff members during the rescue attempt.  Preliminary information suggests that the youth may be mentally unstable, although his identity and exact motive are yet to be confirmed.  Following the incident, the man was reportedly handed over to police for questioning.  No serious injuries or major damage were reported in the incident. Police said no formal complaint has been filed by any party so far.  The Dargah committee, local police, and administrative officials are currently examining CCTV footage and investigating the matter.
