In a major anti-drug operation, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) busted an inter-district marijuana smuggling network in Lucknow and arrested four accused, including a BJP district panchayat member from Mohanlalganj.

The operation was carried out on Saturday in the BBD police station area by a joint team of the ANTF units from Kanpur and Barabanki.

According to officials, the team intercepted two cars near the canal culvert intersection in front of the Baburiha Power House. During the search, police recovered 103 kilograms of marijuana allegedly hidden inside the vehicles.

Police also seized two cars and seven mobile phones from the accused. The recovered marijuana is estimated to be worth around ₹51.50 lakh in the international market.

The arrested accused have been identified as Jitendra Kumar Jaiswal of Nagaram police station area, Vishal Pandey of Matiyari in Lucknow, Saurabh Jaiswal of Barabanki, and Akhilesh Kumar of Unnao.

Inspector Aynuddin, in-charge of the ANTF Kanpur unit, said the action was conducted on the instructions of senior officials in coordination with the Barabanki ANTF team.

During interrogation, the main accused, Jitendra Kumar Jaiswal, allegedly admitted that he had been sourcing large quantities of marijuana from Bihar and supplying it across Lucknow and nearby districts for a long time.

Police said Jitendra is an elected District Panchayat member from the Mohanlalganj area.

The ANTF later handed over the accused and seized materials to BBD police station, where a case was registered under the NDPS Act.

All four accused were produced before a court and subsequently sent to jail. Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest other members linked to the smuggling network.
