In a major crackdown, Meerut police on Tuesday night busted an illegal arms manufacturing factory operating from a hidden underground chamber beneath an almirah inside a house in Khardauni village.

The shocking discovery was made in the Incholi police station area during a joint raid by the local police and SWAT team following a tip-off from an informer.

According to police, the entrance to the illegal factory was concealed inside a wardrobe placed in one of the rooms. When officers opened the almirah, they found a tunnel-like passage leading underground, where country-made pistols were allegedly being manufactured.

Four accused were arrested from the spot, including Imran, the alleged mastermind, and Umang Thakur, a BCA student who police say was involved in supplying weapons.

During the raid, police recovered one semi-finished pistol, two ready-made country-made pistols, 36 springs, 45 barrels, and several 12-bore barrel parts. Welding machines, lathe machines, drill bits, grinders, saws, files, and other weapon-making tools were also seized.

SP Rural Abhijeet Kumar Singh said the illegal factory was being operated from a basement specially built under the cupboard inside Imran’s house.

Police said each accused had a specific role in the racket. Imran allegedly manufactured the weapons, Kuldeep acted as the main supplier, Narendra arranged customers, and Umang Thakur handled delivery and sale of pistols to buyers.

Investigators revealed that Imran had previously been jailed nearly 25 years ago for running an illegal arms factory and had once again revived his network after coming out.

Police records show that several criminal cases are already registered against the accused in Meerut and Delhi under the Arms Act.

Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the wider network and identify buyers linked to the illegal arms trade.

Notably, this is the second such case reported in Meerut within weeks. Around 15 days ago, police had uncovered another illegal weapon factory hidden beneath a bed.
