00:00joining us on the make it right call call right hotline cameron justice uh from news five cam
00:06good morning uh thanks so much for taking time on your sunday to uh to spend a little with us
00:12of course listen it's a good sunday the mac championships has been crowned we're looking
00:19at maybe a two-team bid in the mac for the first time since 99 and of course we've got
00:26all the
00:26other sports news you know okay i'm gonna warn you right now nick's been a hater all morning
00:30um yeah he has there's no hating that's going on hang on michael michael is the arbiter of the show
00:39here okay michael has nick just been a foul mood all morning long yes or no specifically about
00:47akron as well yes i'm just laying out the facts here that this is three straight trips to the ncaa
00:54tournament for your akron zips and the pressure's starting to mount to get that first win in march
01:00madness is all i'm saying is that the zips are facing a lot of pressure here and it would feel
01:05like a big letdown for the mac if they don't get that first win this coming week yeah you know
01:11what
01:11and i agree with that i think it is time that akron finally get that win in the tournament but
01:16hear me out if your team won it in they had to win the mac championship and for three years
01:21they didn't
01:23sorry nick ah yes you tell them cam all right let's uh let's uh let's get serious here because
01:30you know that's all we are here on the sunday show is 100 serious uh i i almost said that
01:35with a
01:35straight face almost uh cam busy week for the browns uh andrew barry said at the combine uh wasn't
01:42expecting to be too busy or hyperactive it was the word that barry had used i wouldn't say they were
01:47hyperactive but they did spend some money on their offensive line just how would you uh grade out
01:52what barry was able to accomplish in rebuilding what i believe to be four of those five spots up
02:00front uh grade wise it's hard to give a a letter because i actually was just having this conversation
02:06i think that andrew barry did a a really good job of focusing on what was important which was the
02:11trenches right especially the offensive line so if i had to give a grade i'd give a high grade for
02:16for the focus but as we know like the offensive line it's it's not a it's not a sexy position
02:22it's not it's it's just it's not flashy these moves aren't going to get you high grades from like you
02:27know nationals all these guys that are signed but i think i really appreciate the the effort to rebuild
02:33what was a decimated offensive line through free agency you had question marks i told atonio you knew
02:39that wyatt teller was gone you know jack conklin was gone and and all of these different moves you have
02:44to figure out ethan posick right and so to get not only the amount of bodies that you are looking
02:51for early and they're going to keep adding but to to add so many of that in the trade and
02:56free agency
02:57but also i really like that they've gotten guys that are so versatile and you can move them around so
03:05it
03:05kind of answers different questions on your line depending on the need it allows you to be more
03:10free in we'll say the draft to get somebody the best talent on the line and not just
03:18directly a guard directly a tackle we because we need this i think the ability for these guys
03:24zion and elton to to kind of be all over i think that's huge for what free agency has looked
03:33like for
03:33the browns i think that gives them a higher grade because they've gotten guys that you can kind of plug
03:38and play wherever you may need it based on how the rest of this offseason shapes out but based on
03:44how
03:45the draft shapes out so i would give a higher grade i don't know that i'd give a letter grade
03:49because
03:49it's just you know it's it's hard to tell especially with an offensive line until they're there until you
03:54see how cohesive they are until you see how you know the new o-line warhop is going to to
04:00get them
04:00together because there was high expectations for the line you know the past couple years and it's
04:06kind of gone downhill a little bit so you got to get it back up so i'll wait to grade
04:10but i i like
04:11the efforts that have been made uh joel batonio they the contract voided browns charged 23 and a
04:18half million on the salary cap uh i kind of think he's not coming back uh where do you think
04:25uh joel
04:26batonio uh what's going to happen with him oh you know what i have that feeling too and it's only
04:31because i think that last year i had the feeling i didn't i was surprised that he opted to come
04:38back
04:38for another year last year i thought he might choose to retire you know you you can win three
04:43games and still doesn't look like it looks like there might be an uphill climb to turn things around
04:50after a three-win season and i was surprised that joel came back last offseason and then didn't choose
04:56to retire so i feel like it does trend that way obviously as the option of either retiring which
05:03i think is probably heavy on his mind but there's also the opportunity for him as a free agent to
05:08sign with another team and go to a a team that may contend uh have a stronger chance of contending
05:15and
05:15i that to me feels less like joel batonio i wouldn't know i don't think anyone would blame him for
05:21it
05:21but you know being so close to joe thomas and kind of being shaped by him that's why to me
05:27it feels
05:28like less likely that he does that but that nothing is precluding him from doing it so as the as
05:35the
05:36leaks go on it feels more and more like we're trending towards a retirement but it's i know it's not
05:44an easy
05:44decision and it's not as if joel doesn't have anything left to give it's just is is it worth
05:50the toll it's a toll on the body it's a toll on the knees on the back and we've seen
05:55him deal with injuries
05:56and he's talked about wanting to be able to move and play with his kids and so it's it's just
06:03something
06:03i think that maybe as this offseason shapes out just both with the browns and around the league like
06:11is this is this a year that makes sense for joel batonio to play in is this a year in
06:17which something
06:17special could happen because if not you're kind of just taking a toll on the body and that's why it
06:23feels maybe like as as time goes on that realization may be sinking in but i was surprised again like
06:31i said
06:31that he that he played last year and kudos to him for for toughening it out and you know just
06:37giving
06:37his all every single time he's out on that field cam if you had to put your prediction hat on
06:43for
06:44what andrew barry might do next what do you think is to come for the cleveland browns is the first
06:51wave
06:52of free agency i feel like it's kind of fair to say is calm down a little bit what do
06:56you think ab
06:56has left to do this offseason are we talking we're not talking free agency or we're talking draft
07:02yeah like before before we get too heavy into the draft stuff yeah okay well you know i i wouldn't
07:09be mad because i i think the ultimate goal here is to get a young receiver in the draft i
07:15wouldn't be
07:15mad at bringing in a veteran too um and obviously so that that to me is maybe something that i
07:22would
07:23look at i also i think the obvious is a quarterback a veteran quarterback because they're going to they're
07:29going to have another one but whether whether they're a guy that may like has a chance to to
07:36start or not there will be a fourth quarterback on this roster i think that drafting a quarterback
07:42adds too much chaos into the room when you have you know the uncertainty of what deshaun will be
07:49deshaun watson will be and and but there's still this this glimmer of hope for them that maybe
07:55with todd munkin and this new staff that they can get some more out of him now that you know
08:01he's
08:01recovering from that achilles uh and then obviously shador sanders going into a second year can he
08:08continue to be developed can he take a leap that makes him uh a strong starter in the nfl that's
08:15something that also the addition of todd munkin is a developmental coach is that's that's the goal but
08:21that said they've said that they like some of the things they saw out of dylan gabriel too so we're
08:26not going to forget him but they will have four quarterbacks at camp and so i think to add a
08:33rookie
08:34and and put that development workload on with with two second year guys and a guy that's coming back
08:40from injury that just hasn't been the same for years to add a rookie into the mix is adding a
08:46lot
08:46of chaos and uncertainty where if you add a veteran i think that's a little bit more stability so
08:53a receiver would be nice but a quarterback will be what that is without certain something that they
09:00will have to do and i just don't think it happens in the draft so my prediction is some veteran
09:06quarterback signing with the team for at the very least their fourth camp arm uh the browns seem to be
09:16getting the word out that deshaun watson is going to get a crack at this thing uh this offseason cam
09:21and we're talking with cameron justice news 5 on the make it right call call right hotline um i'm a
09:27little worried about that but my opinion don't matter it's what the organization thinks and and and
09:32feels um do you think this is going to come down to deshaun v shadour in camp i i do
09:41i think that
09:41i think there is a lot of it's it's a lot of hope right now within within the organization i
09:48think
09:48there's some beliefs just and it's nothing else not because of a sample size not because of anything
09:54other than this this staff todd monk and staff was was built with the idea of development and that's
10:03truly what it is and so we when we think about that it's it's clear it's easy to just say
10:07you know
10:07okay well that means you know shadour sanders that means quinchon judkins and carson sweshinger
10:15mason graham and all these young guys that are going to find themselves and it means
10:18what you obviously assume will be a very big and hopefully impactful rookie class but it goes beyond
10:26that because you do have deshaun watson on the roster you have him on the books and it didn't work
10:31out and so if you get a guy that a head coach that you think is really strong at developing
10:37it's not
10:38just young guys maybe he can develop and kind of work out some of these issues that deshaun watson
10:42has had in cleveland if deshaun watson's healthy uh and as he continues that rehab from the achilles
10:47it can't be certain that he's going to be healthy and he had the shoulder he had the achilles and
10:53then
10:53he re-tore the achilles uh and so all those setbacks it's hard to imagine um a fully healthy
11:02deshaun watson and when he was healthy he did not play well for the browns but i think there is
11:07that
11:07hope okay with this staff if he's healthy maybe this is what the steps that are needed this is this
11:16is the staff that is needed to develop more out of him because anybody not just a young guy can
11:21be
11:21developed you can be a veteran and be developed so i think that is driving the hope uh within the
11:26organization but there's also hope that shador sanders can take a step and and and really elevate
11:31his game and so i think it does come down between those two and then whoever they add maybe that
11:37throws a little wrinkle in the plan uh and you know dylan gabriel is on this team right now so
11:44as long
11:44as on the team he'll have that shot to go out there but i think it is it is very
11:49one two right now
11:50for the three quarterbacks as it stands is is deshaun watson going to be healthy enough and can they
11:55see things from him that they haven't seen since they traded for him with this new staff and can
12:03they get shador sanders into a different position where he's taking care of the ball better he's a
12:10playmaker they know it they love that they just want to see that development so can they get him to
12:15that level and i think that's the the strength of this staff so we'll see what happens with those two
12:20but i do think it's i think it's right now it's one of their jobs to lose kim you had
12:25an opportunity
12:26to sit down with miles garrett here uh i watched it uh great job by you um every time i
12:32go on uh one
12:34of our sister stations across the country i've always asked the odds of them being able to trade
12:39for miles garrett uh and i tell them the browns have a better chance of winning the super bowl this
12:43year than that happening uh just uh what was your biggest takeaway from that conversation you had
12:49uh with miles and just where he's at in his career i think that it truly because this is
12:57this was about legacy it was about the things that have happened last year and just how
13:01how it has impacted him and and how it has shaped you know how he views himself and what's next
13:08and his goals and it i knew the answer was going to be when i asked what's next for for
13:14miles garrett i
13:14knew the answer was going to be super bowl because that has been on the top of his list now
13:19for he won dpoi he got that he really wanted a super bowl that's what caused the the trade
13:28request that was not fulfilled was the desire to continue to build the legacy and do the things
13:36that he wants to do to to solidify himself as the greatest to do it and and he wants to
13:43go we know
13:43he's going to be in the hall of fame we know that he wants to be in the hall of
13:47fame with a super bowl
13:48next to his name and so for me the biggest takeaway is just you know that he's he's in a
13:54position right
13:55now on a team that there was there was that hope for you know you had the playoffs and then
14:012023 had
14:02two playoff trips in this in that stretch with kevin safancy and there's like those glimmers of
14:06this thing is getting turned around and then for it to kind of spiral so hard and so fast
14:13has been really difficult and so i think that reality of like being close to being a contender
14:19being close to you know considering yourself as a team that can get through the playoff get to the
14:23playoff and get through the playoff was there it was starting to grow and then to have that light
14:28snuffed out it's tough uh but i the patience uh in the conversation of you know what what's next
14:35would it mean more in cleveland he's taking it day by day i think that he's trying to get out
14:42of his
14:42own head with it right like he's he's he's controlling what he can control which is how can he be
14:48the best
14:49player on the football field how can he impact the game to help create wins it's a lot harder on
14:57the
14:57defensive side uh to do as one player than it is on the offense so that's got to be the
15:03thing that
15:04it takes shape and and the defense has to keep playing strong but i think miles garrett's in a
15:08position right now where that is just the most important thing in terms of his career he wants
15:15that more than anything he's he's proven to himself i think that like every goal that he can set
15:21he he sets for himself he can do it he wanted he wanted a dpoi he got it twice he
15:26wanted the stack
15:27record he got it so this is this is next so we'll see what what the browns are able to
15:33do
15:34uh and you know it would be a shame i think to have a career if i was a player
15:40i would be
15:40disappointed too if i had an illustrious career but couldn't get that ultimate team goal so every
15:47everything that he does from here on out will be based on trying to get that done and he said
15:54it
15:54would mean way more to do it in cleveland the team that took him took a chance on him that
16:02he grew
16:03with that he became who he is uh on the team so we just gotta gotta hope for everyone's sake
16:10in
16:10cleveland for for the players for the organization for the fans that that can get done uh as a
16:15cleveland brown before his time uh here is done yeah one before we go that's that's what every that's
