In today's Forecast Feed, AccuWeather's Bernie Rayno monitors the risk of cold air and snow showers in the United States in the coming weeks.
Transcript
00:00is locked in over the next couple of weeks in fact at least through the 15th of this month it
00:14looks like the cold is going to be somewhat persistent from the lakes toward the Northeast
00:19now with that once you get the cold you're going to have opportunities for snow of course this
00:25what's occurring today and in the Tuesday was the opportunity that we talked about last week let me
00:31take you out to the water vapor loop here and you can kind of see what's going on you've got this
00:36boundary in here right let me turn on my pen right in here the boundary is in here now you'll notice
00:43you've got this piece of energy here this is going to be running to the East Southeast what's it going
00:49to do it's going to form a storm on this boundary that comes up the eastern seaboard and then again
00:54we have enough cold air in place for accumulating snow I want to show you what it looks like on the
01:00on the jet stream here really quick and and because the reason I want to show you this setup we may
01:10have another setup very similar to this one as we get in the Friday and Saturday so I want to take
01:17you there this is what we're looking at and again you're looking at this piece of energy this is
01:22across the Rockies here's your digging northern piece here's the southern piece now for this storm
01:27to happen this piece has to round the bend get out ahead of this northern piece if it doesn't do that
01:34then all we have is a frontal passage in no storm but when you look at the look what happens it's yeah
01:41it's getting out ahead of it you see it you have the northern piece here here's the southern piece
01:46it rounded the bend it gets just out ahead of it just enough that you get to storm the form and then
01:53this is what it looks like on the surface map there it goes right up the coast now most of it is offshore
02:01but we have enough precipitation for the accumulating snow this is what it's going to look like and then
02:07I'll we'll get to the next storm here but I want to show you this really quick here here's what we're
02:13looking at here uh as far as the snow is concerned general one to three in this blue that includes
02:19Chicago Indy St. Louis Cody into an inch or two Harrisburg Redding Allentown one to three inches
02:26one in one to three inches in Pittsburgh Altoona State College and then once you get up into here
02:31uh northeastern Pennsylvania around Hazleton Scranton uh just west of Boston about three inches of snow
02:38tell you what New York City is a close call I don't think you're going to get accumulating snow but
02:42I think there will be flakes at the onset and in Boston you're kind of in the cold air enough
02:47that you can get some front end snow Tuesday afternoon and then it may end as a period of snow
02:53I have a slushy coating maybe an inch in Boston but more the more of the um significant snow across
03:02interior sections of the northeast as we get into Tuesday and Tuesday night so this storm
03:08kind of did play along exactly as we thought it might here now I want to show you this I was talking
03:15about how the cold air is going to be locked in here over the next couple of days let me show you
03:20the upper air pattern and you can see what I'm talking about so we've got this northwest flow
03:25right here see this this is tomorrow Thursday another system coming through what happens northwest
03:33flows so the cold air stays locked in let's go to uh let's go to the week uh Friday another piece
03:39of energy and this is the one we got to watch for for the possibility of another snow event from the
03:44Appalachians toward the northeast doesn't look right now but I could see it but what this does is comes
03:50through guess what more cold air as we get in the Saturday then we get in the Sunday you see this
03:56northwest flow follow the lines where's the cold air coming from coming from the northwest
04:00territories north central Canada right into the lakes and the northeast so it stays cold that's
04:05the seventh let's go to Tuesday what do you see northwest flow this is December 9th let's go to
04:12Friday the end of next week almost well about 13 10 days from now another system coming through this
04:19will bring some colder air in behind it it's not until you get to the about the 15th you finally
04:25see a different pattern this dip in the jet stream coming into the west if this is right this would
04:32be the last dip of energy coming into the east there'd be another shot of cold through the 15th
04:3716th and 17th and then it would start to warm up as we get closer to Christmas for the eastern U.S.
04:43now I'm not saying that's right but at least what I'm looking at now at least for the next 10 to 14 days
04:50we're in the cold air in the lakes and that means you have opportunities for snow now we have the snow
04:56event I just told you now I wanted I want to get to the next event here and this is going to be
05:01over the weekend and let me we play the same kind of weather pattern same kind of weather pattern that
05:07we're seeing right now all right let me show it to you as we get into Friday look what's happening
05:13you've got uh this little piece of energy Friday morning you've got this here and you've got this here
05:20this is another cold front coming southeast I'll show you the surface map so what's happening is
05:25once again and I'll show you this weather pattern you look at what's going on in the United States
05:30you have a frontal boundary stalled out looks very similar to this the the question is can you get any
05:37energy diving to the southeast that can form a storm along this boundary and guide it up the coast
05:43right now the pattern's not quite right for that on Friday and here's why when you look at this energy
05:48you've got this in here in order for this to hit in order for a storm to form along this boundary
05:54this piece of energy has to get out ahead of this digging front digging shortwave right here
06:01there it is Friday you see right here Saturday you see it's not quite with it because here's your
06:08northern piece your energy's back in here in order for this storm to form this has to run out ahead of
06:15it now that means either this northern piece is slower or the southern piece is faster but in
06:21order to get a storm to form you need this energy to run out ahead of this front this digging shortwave
06:27and then if you do then you get the storm right now they're almost at the same longitude so when you
06:33look at the surface map what do you see yeah you have a storm here it goes off the Carolina coast
06:39but it's driven out to sea and it's not in the cold air it's a close call though let's watch this area
06:48as we get into the weekend from the Appalachians to interior sections of the northeast not the I-95
06:56corridor though but that's your threat for snow
06:59you
