In today's Forecast Feed, Bernie Rayno takes a look at the next opportunity for widespread snow.
Transcript
00:00all right plenty of cold in the next week i think we're looking at only uh weak systems from the
00:11upper lakes from the lakes toward the northeast with snow in the early next week but i'm still
00:17highlighting mid to late next week that's our next opportunity for more of a widespread snow
00:25that would be from the midwest perhaps the mid-atlantic and into the northeast but until
00:29then i don't see any big storms i do want to show you this this is somewhat impressive when you take
00:35a look at the current snow depth now and again we're going to add to this snow cover in here across
00:41virginia with the snow that we're getting this morning but when you take a look at this we have
00:45about 45 to 50 percent of the united states now in snow cover i mean it's not an unheard of number
00:54but compared to where we were at the beginning of november i mean we've really started to build
00:58the snow cover especially here across the midwest and northeast want to give you some highlights
01:04moving forward here haven't changed much since we talked about this yesterday weak storms and only
01:11minor snow events in the early next week the potential for more of a widespread snow will be
01:19mid to late next week it does appear it may be more friday but i'm going to keep my options open
01:24and watch the northern rockies i thought it could be next weekend that they could get plastered with
01:30snow it may be once we get in toward the second week of december now i want to show you what we're
01:37looking at for early next week again we're going to have a couple of weak little clippers coming in
01:42our west northwest flow this weekend in the early next week and then the opportunity is there for
01:48late week we start on the upper air and i'm going to show you the american model and the european model
01:53this is on monday and it's the same pattern we've seen you just see this you've got this upper low
01:59which is now uh east of hudson bay and what this is going to do this just sits here next week it kind
02:06of spins around and it just continues to direct cold air into the midwest northeast and mid-atlantic
02:13and of course once you have the cold air you have to worry about snow so that's not moving anywhere
02:17but what you are going to see these little pieces of energy on the southern side of that uh drop just
02:24continue to move south and southeast now most of them are weak won't produce much of any snow and you
02:31can see them coming in this is monday let's show you the european only this is monday there's one
02:36coming into the northeast on tuesday notice behind it here comes another one this comes down across
02:42the lakes and into the northeast as we get in on wednesday and thursday now this is a little deeper
02:50but again doesn't look right i don't see anything more than some light snow and flurries nothing that's
02:57significant but it's behind this one that things change a little bit now i could show you this with
03:02the surface map so you can see these little systems coming across this is monday here's one going
03:08across the lakes you see that monday then you have another one going across the lakes again tuesday
03:14and wednesday but then it's this one where things change a little bit here by thursday morning what
03:20happens is now you've got a boundary that's stalled all the way down into the mid-atlantic and notice
03:26what's going on here you have some moisture this is the next piece of energy that rounds the bend
03:33let me go back to the upper air map let's go thursday morning there it is this is the energy
03:37coming into the northwest now watch what this one does because what we've been talking about is
03:43if we can get some of this energy to dig a little farther west maybe across the mid-south then round
03:50the bend as you get toward the midwest and northeast you have cold air in place and that's how you can get
03:55accumulating snow watch what this one does this is the european model here it comes look at that now
04:02see this is what i was talking about yesterday instead of this rounding the bend here it's back
04:09across midwest now you have room if this is right for accumulating snow late next week across the
04:18midwest notice the pieces with this it's still this the first piece is this upper low which is
04:24meandering around james bay that just continues to keep the cold air in place and then you've got
04:29pieces of energy coming around it but this piece looks like it's gonna do i say let's call it dig
04:37a little more watch it boom but right there that's friday morning now this rounds the bend that means
04:44you're gonna have a storm coming out and taking this kind of a track which we highlighted yesterday look
04:49at that energy boo there it goes now it's not perfect for a lot of snow yet but you see the
04:55potential the american model by the way is not as deep with the trough see it's a lot farther north
05:02look at the difference european american european american model european american model european american
05:08model right so what are the difference on the surface map let's go to it on thursday this is the
05:13european watch it right here see this is what i'm talking about this would put down a large area of
05:19one to three three to six inches of snow across the midwest minneapolis chicago detroit cleveland and
05:27then watch it see how it comes around here and then there you go you get a coastal storm to form maybe
05:32most of it's offshore but you can see the storm track we highlighted for you yesterday this would this
05:41has potential from the midwest toward the northeast now the american model is not as deep with us so
05:46the storm's farther north it takes more of a track like this see that would be more of a snow for the
05:52upper midwest and new england the european says no it's a little farther south now what model's right
05:59i always tend to trust the european model more but you see what the potential is for next week in this
06:08area in here for more of a widespread accumulating snow now is it a big storm it won't be across
06:17midwest you'd see a lot of one to three three to sixes but you know as that storm gets off the eastern
06:22seaboard starts to intensify then you start worrying about some heavier snow six inches or plus that would
06:29likely be in new england so this is the time frame to watch right now it looks more like friday friday
06:34night but anywhere mid to late next week just to give you an idea of where this piece of energy is
06:39now that's going to form it see this you know where it is let me show you where it is
06:45it's out off here off the coast of japan so needless to say it's a long way away
06:53but we're going to watch it on the feed watch out late next week
06:58here we go
