00:00Hello, and welcome to Gangs All Here.
00:03My name is Ryan Sampson, the host and producer of the show.
00:05That's the star of the show, Brian Costello, our Jets beat writer.
00:08The New York Jets have a new starting quarterback.
00:10They are going to tie Rod Taylor, and we're here to discuss it on today's episode.
00:14But before we get to that, I'll start off, as always,
00:17Kaz, how are you doing today, sir?
00:19I'm good, Ryan. How are you?
00:21I'm hanging in there. I'm hanging in there.
00:23We're hitting week 12, a little bit of a longer break,
00:27because they played on Thursday night last week.
00:30I thought we were going to talk more about,
00:31hey, what was your reaction to last week's game?
00:34But it looks like the Jets have made the decision on what their reaction was
00:37to what Justin Fields' performance was last week against Patriots.
00:40So your reaction to something we discussed about last week,
00:44where the Jets are officially going to, well, the reports are,
00:48they're going to tie Rod Taylor this upcoming week against the Ravens.
00:52Yeah, I mean, it's as official as it can be, Ryan.
00:55I've told, you know, as a source, tell me it's done,
00:57and we just talked to players, and they were told, you know,
01:01they confirmed, they were told today in the meeting it's done.
01:05Look, he had to do it.
01:06I mean, it's been coming for a while, right?
01:08Like, you can go back to London, where it looked like it needed to be done.
01:14He benches him the following week at halftime against Carolina.
01:16I think he would have gone to tie Rod in Cincinnati if Tyrod had been healthy.
01:20Then Fields comes out, has a good performance in Cincinnati,
01:22so he has to run him back against Cleveland.
01:24He plays poorly against Cleveland.
01:26But then it's a short week against New England,
01:28so he can't really make the change there.
01:29We've talked about that all last week.
01:31So this is the time.
01:32You know, the timing was there to do it.
01:35Does it rescue the season?
01:37No, but Tyrod will be able to run a professional offense, I think.
01:41You'll be able to get a better feel for what you have in Adonai Mitchell,
01:46John Mechie, Tanner Engstrand.
01:50You know, so you know that this is about evaluation for these last seven weeks,
01:54and it's been – we've talked about it before.
01:57It's been hard to know what you've got in different guys
01:59because the quarterback play has been so bad.
02:01Mason Taylor, it's been hard to know just how good he is, right,
02:04because we've been watching it, and the quarterback play has been
02:06so below average that it's been tough to evaluate.
02:10So now you get a professional.
02:13You know what Tyrod Taylor is, and, you know, now the question is,
02:16can you stay healthy?
02:18Can you keep him upright for a while,
02:19or are we going to see Justin Fields again in a few weeks?
02:22Yeah, I think there's a lot there that you just laid out,
02:25the first being the evaluation of this team the rest of this way.
02:29Look, no one in the NFL circles or the team themselves
02:33will admit that they're tanking.
02:34But when you trade away Quentin Williams, Sauce Gardner,
02:38and you're stockpiling these picks,
02:40and you're basically now this point of, like you said,
02:44evaluating the roster, you're quietly tanking,
02:47even though it's not tanking.
02:48It's like we're going there to play a football game,
02:50but like you said, it's more about evaluating what they have here
02:53the rest of the way.
02:54So I wonder what you think about can you actually get a good read
03:01from this offense and Tanner Engstrand's evaluation
03:04with Tyrod being the quarterback?
03:07I think so.
03:09I mean, look, we've seen Tyrod play pretty well through the years
03:12at different stops.
03:15And even when he's played in mop-up duty with the Jets,
03:18it's like more last year, you know,
03:21he came in a couple times and led them on touchdown drives.
03:26You know, the Tampa Bay game this year when he started,
03:29started off real slow, but he had a pretty good second half,
03:32or fourth quarter, I guess it was really,
03:33if I remember correctly,
03:35where he led a couple touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.
03:37So, like, it can look like an NFL offense with Tyrod,
03:42where I feel like with fields, it's just very few and far between.
03:46You know, the first drive the other night,
03:47and then it's really stopped after that.
03:50So I do think Tyrod can give you an NFL offense.
03:53Well, I agree with you, Kaz.
03:54You'd hope that you can evaluate what Tyrod can do.
03:57And I want to see what Adonai Mitchell can really be
04:00with a real quarterback.
04:01I think the frustrating part, too, is even though you had moments
04:07in that game against Patriots where you're like,
04:09could they make a comeback and win this game?
04:11Can they stick around here?
04:12Like, you wonder if Tyrod, if he played,
04:14could he, you know, have led them to a win there?
04:18But like you said, it was a short week.
04:19So I wonder,
04:21Justin Fields, is this the last that we're going to see of him
04:26as the Jets quarterback?
04:29No, because it's never the last.
04:31You should know that, Ryan, from the years of Zach Wilson.
04:35Oh, it's over for Zach Wilson.
04:37And then Zach Wilson pops back up two weeks later.
04:41Or, you know, if you go way back 2012, you know,
04:46they benched Sanchez for Greg McIlroy with two weeks left in the season.
04:49You're like, wow, this is probably the last time we'll ever see Mark Sanchez.
04:52And then McIlroy had a concussion,
04:54and Sanchez had to play the last game of the season against Buffalo.
04:56Like, stuff happens.
04:58So, and like we said, Tyrod has a history of injuries,
05:01and he's got a bad knee already that he's playing on, you know, from this season.
05:05So, you know, it will not surprise me to see Justin Fields again this season.
05:11I think what you can close the book on, Ryan,
05:13is the idea of Justin Fields being any sort of long-term quarterback for the Jets.
05:20Like, I think now there's a good chance they just move on from him this offseason
05:24and eat the money.
05:26Really? You think they move on from him?
05:28I do.
05:29I think at this point, you know, I don't think he's what you're looking for
05:33in a backup quarterback necessarily.
05:35Like, you're looking for Tyrod Taylor.
05:37You're looking for someone that if you need to play a few games,
05:40you know what you're getting.
05:42The problem with Justin Fields is you just don't know what you're getting,
05:45you know, week to week, drive to drive even.
05:48Yeah.
05:49And then if you're going to play a certain style, he doesn't fit.
05:53You know, if you're going to draft a drop-back pass or a pure drop-back,
05:56you know, does he have to change the whole offense that Fields is playing?
06:00So, I think you have to start thinking about it.
06:02It's a lot of money.
06:04You know, they could post June 1st and spread it over two years.
06:06But remember, they already have a ton of money on the books for Aaron Rodgers next year.
06:11So, it's a lot of dead money at quarterback if you're moving on.
06:14But we've seen teams in recent years, that's been the trend now.
06:19It used to be you never did that.
06:20Starting basically with the Broncos, with Russell Wilson,
06:23and some other teams have done it where they've just eaten the money on these quarterbacks.
06:28And I think the Jets will probably have to consider that now.
06:32Well, I guess that also begs the question then,
06:34does Justin get demoted to QB3 and you elevate Brady Cook as backup?
06:38Because you just pointed out the evaluation of it all, right?
06:41Like, why not see what you could – if Tyrod does get banged up,
06:45which is a high probability because of his history,
06:48why not have Brady Cook there to see even if there's potential for him being a backup quarterback?
06:54Yeah, I'd have to know.
06:55Like, what we don't know is how Brady Cook has progressed this season.
06:58And I doubt he's progressed much because he probably hasn't done much.
07:02You know, he was the backup that one week when Justin Fields was out.
07:07And I guess he was the backup in Cincinnati when Tyrod was out.
07:10So, you know –
07:12Yeah, it was against the Buccaneers he was the backup, right?
07:14And the Bengals.
07:15And the Bengals, yeah.
07:16So, I remember Tyrod was – Tyrod didn't travel to Cincinnati.
07:18So, those two games he was the backup.
07:20But, like, how much is he doing during the week?
07:22Like, what does he look like?
07:23He was not ready to play this summer.
07:26Right.
07:26I can see – he was not ready to play games this summer.
07:30So, that's something I don't know.
07:32I think that would have to be how it looked.
07:34Like, if you think you can have a functioning offense with him, I guess you could go that route.
07:38But I think you'd have to have some confidence in him that he can play.
07:42So, would you say we haven't had a fair evaluation of a Tanner Engstrand and potentially what this offense could have been with Justin Fields?
07:50And the second part I would ask you is, can Tanner Engstrand have a more successful offense with Tyrod – and I know I asked that before, but, like, can we actually see Brees Hall unleashed in this offense a little bit more, you know?
08:06Yeah, it's hard to know for sure how much is Tanner Engstrand and how much is Justin Fields.
08:10Like, the whole Brees Hall thing, right?
08:12Like, why aren't they throwing to him?
08:14That's – it's crazy.
08:15If you remember, if you remember, I said this on this show, I think in the summer, or maybe even the spring, with Frankie talking about Brees catching the ball.
08:24Someone in Chicago told me Justin Fields cannot throw to running backs.
08:28He just can't do it.
08:29Like, he doesn't see them.
08:31He doesn't – just isn't a very good passer to running backs.
08:35And so, is it him?
08:37You know, is he the reason Brees isn't – so, you know, I don't know that answer.
08:42And, obviously, you watch the film and you can see receivers running open and he doesn't hit them.
08:47So, is Engstrand designing a better offense than what the production is?
08:51I think we'll, you know, I think we'll find out a little bit with Tyrod.
08:55And especially, the Ravens are playing a little bit better.
08:58It's a tough one.
08:59But if he can face the Falcons and Dolphins and they actually have a football game, you know, where they're in the game and stuff,
09:05I think we'll get a little better read on Engstrand.
09:08I completely agree with you, Kaz.
09:10And the last of this all, I think, will be, you know, the Jets, you know, if they do win a couple more games here
09:18and they end up with four wins this year, they'll probably end up in a four to seven, four to eight range
09:23because of the way the rest of the NFL is unless there's more wins coming from those other teams.
09:28I mean, the Jets do play the Saints later this year, which could be a crucial game.
09:33Pivotal.
09:33So, you could say, for that top draft pick, are they going to be all in on the draft for a quarterback?
09:40Or is there other options of veteran trade that we aren't considering that could happen?
09:46I think it's too soon to know, Ryan.
09:48I mean, I really think they're all in on evaluating the college quarterbacks right now.
09:53And so, I think they have to sit down in January and go, you know, what do we think?
09:59Do we think, do we love one of these guys?
10:02Do we love three of these guys?
10:03Do we think we can get one where we're at?
10:05Are we going to have to move up to get one?
10:07Would we be better off with the Kirk Cousins?
10:10Is there some quarterback out there that's available for trade that we don't foresee, you know, right now?
10:16That sometimes happens where a guy shakes loose.
10:21I'm not sure we knew Aaron Rodgers was going to be free in November of 2022.
10:26And then he wasn't, you know, by March of 2023, he was available.
10:29So, you know, I think those are conversations in January where they're going to have to evaluate it.
10:34That makes sense, Cousins.
10:36It certainly does.
10:37Look, I hope that we can find some value in Adonai Mitchell.
10:41I think he's got some special speed on the field.
10:43Needs to catch the ball when it's thrown to him.
10:45But I think you could see the talent there.
10:48And you're hoping that maybe the Jets can unlock something there.
10:51You know, Mechie's an interesting player.
10:53And like you said, also the Brees Hall factor.
10:56Like, you didn't trade him at the deadline.
10:59You needed to run him back in the room.
11:00But he's also special.
11:01You could see what he could do to help you win football games.
11:03If he plays really well down the stretch, that's going to make him some more money.
11:07You know, like, that's part of me, like, I'm hoping for.
11:10And I also think, I don't know what you think about this.
11:12The offensive line has looked better.
11:13Like, every week they seem to be getting better.
11:16And I cannot believe how good Armand Membu has looked at right tackle.
11:20He's just a stall, like a wall right there.
11:24Yeah, no, they've been very good.
11:25And you look at what Miles Garrett did yesterday against Baltimore.
11:28And then what he did the week before they played the Jets against New England.
11:31And, you know, the Jets didn't throw a ton in that game, 11 pass attempts, a few more called passes, you know, that that fields ran on.
11:40But they gave up one sack in that game to Miles Garrett.
11:44And, you know, it wasn't like that that sack was kind of a fields held the ball a little bit, flushed out.
11:50So, yeah, they're doing a great job.
11:51You know, I thought they've done a good job here for several, several weeks now.
11:59Completely.
11:59Kaz, we appreciate you as always.
12:01We're looking forward to your coverage throughout the week.
12:03We'll talk to you later this week as we preview the Jets versus Ravens game.
12:07Are you picking them this week, Ry?
12:09The Jets?
12:10You know what?
12:11It's the worst rated pass defense in the NFL.
12:14The Ravens are.
12:15Yeah.
12:17Tyrod.
12:18Tyrod.
12:18Good spot.
12:19All right, so you're thinking about it.
12:21I'm thinking about it.
12:23I mean, the Ravens, the Ravens are hot, too.
12:26They've also won a bunch in a row.
12:28They are, playing in Baltimore.
12:30And the Jets' defense was soft as tissue paper last week.
12:34Against the pass.
12:35I thought against the run, they were okay.
12:38You know, obviously, Henderson scored the touchdowns in the red zone.
12:41But it wasn't like he was, he rushed for 150 yards in that game.
12:44But how concerning was it that Will McDonald, like the pass rush, couldn't get after
12:48Drake May again?
12:50I think Will McDonald was hurt.
12:52Yeah.
12:52Oh, really?
12:53He was on the injury report all week with a quad injury.
12:55He didn't practice.
12:56I mean, they didn't practice at all.
12:57But he was listed as projected as he wouldn't have practiced.
13:01So he was hurting.
13:03Like, if you noticed, he wasn't playing his normal number of snaps.
13:07The first drive, he basically wasn't even out there.
13:09So I think he was hurt.
13:13You know, but yeah.
13:15And Drake May, man, like, I thought the most impressive thing about him was just the way
13:19he moved in the pocket.
13:22He was really just had that subtle, like, the pass rush is coming, take two steps up
13:28and throw the ball.
13:29And, you know, and then the one on the sideline that he got to Diggs was, I mean, that was
13:33pretty.
13:34That's Josh Allen type stuff, Patrick Mahomes type stuff.
13:38So he looked really good.
13:40Are the Jets going to get any reinforcements in the secondary this week?
13:43They're pretty banged up, right?
13:45Well, AZ has the concussion.
13:47So, you know, it's hard to predict.
13:49I think we'll know more Wednesday to see, like, if he's on the practice field Wednesday,
13:53that would be a good sign that he's coming through the protocol.
13:56But, you know, they could get him back.
13:59They're obviously not getting Cisco back.
14:01He's done for the year.
14:02So that's it.
14:04But they need, you know, they need Thomas on the outside, though, so they can put Brownlee
14:08on the inside.
14:09And, you know, Brownlee has to fix.
14:12We have to see why Tennessee traded Jarvis Brownlee.
14:15He's just, he's a walking penalty.
14:18He's not an outside corner.
14:19He's a slot corner.
14:21Yeah.
14:21And some of the, you know, he played the slot.
14:23They had Stakers playing outside against him, and then he got hurt.
14:27And they had to put Brownlee on the side.
14:28But, yeah, he's, so, yeah, I think Brownlee's definitely better in the slot.
14:31But they need him to stop the penalties.
14:34I agree.
14:35Guys, we appreciate you, buddy, hopping on and doing this for us.
14:38We'll catch you next time, all right?
14:40All right.
14:40See you later on.
