Jets fans have hit the point of no return.
00:03
They don't want Justin Fields to take the field as the team's QB1 anymore.
00:07
Is it Tyrod Taylor time?
00:09
So let's talk to Matt O'Leary from the Just Jets podcast
00:12
on who he and the fan base wants as a starter for the rest of the season.
00:17
Matt, man, I wish I could be coming to you on a little bit more happier terms here.
00:22
I appreciate you hopping on with me, my man, but I'm going to get straight into it.
00:26
Where do you and the fan base point most of the blame when it comes to the Jets offense
00:31
being so bland and so nonproductive?
00:34
Offense coordinator Tanner Inkstrand, or are you going with Justin Fields on this one?
00:39
I honestly think it's a little bit of both.
00:42
I think when you have a young play caller, this is the first time being an NFL play caller,
00:47
there's going to be some growing pains.
00:49
I think we saw that this past week against the Denver Broncos.
00:52
But overall, I think he's done an okay job for Justin Fields.
00:56
It just felt like he was second guessing himself in this game.
01:01
Took nine sacks is just didn't like what he was seeing out there.
01:05
Never really took off and ran either.
01:07
And just seemed like on the throws that he was willing to make was late on a lot of those.
01:12
So I think it's a combination of the play calling and the quarterback play.
01:15
Although from this most recent game against Denver, I think the line held up okay.
01:20
But the sack numbers don't look great because Fields was holding on to the ball for nearly four seconds,
01:25
which is far too long in the NFL.
01:27
I know you've already watched the All-22.
01:29
If you go back and watch the last play at the end when he gets sacked, I can't see.
01:35
I can't make out who exactly it is.
01:37
But one of the offensive linemen are having a fit.
01:41
I think it's Membu.
01:42
I mean, he's just throwing his arms around.
01:44
He looks like he's upset whether it could be because they lost
01:48
or it could be because they felt like they held up against that cover zero blitz
01:52
and that ball should have been delivered.
01:54
So you've got the entire fan base.
01:56
You've got people on ESPN, all the talking heads wanting to go to Tyrod Taylor.
02:04
Does it make sense to replace Fields with T2 with Garrett Wilson being out for a couple of weeks?
02:10
It's like, why do you people think that Tyrod could just come in, wave a magic wand,
02:14
and then the offense just poof gets going?
02:18
Yeah, you know, this week in particular, I don't think it's going to matter much
02:21
if it was Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor with having Garrett Wilson out.
02:25
Although I will say in the game against Denver,
02:28
I thought maybe they should have made a quarterback change, right?
02:31
And that doesn't mean that you can't go back to Justin Fields the following week.
02:35
But in the second half, it just felt like he was so gun-shy to try to throw the ball.
02:40
And, you know, we talked about the fourth and eighth sack that he took on the play before,
02:44
you know, had Garrett Wilson open on a speed route and just gave a late ball.
02:48
And unfortunately, it was an incomplete pass.
02:50
At least with Tyrod, I feel like he has a more willingness to push the ball down the field
02:55
and might take a little bit, you know, make some more mistakes, but isn't afraid to let it rip.
03:00
So I thought, you know, maybe coming out of the half, you go to Tyrod Taylor for the fourth quarter
03:05
when it was obvious that they weren't moving the ball with Justin Fields,
03:08
but not to the point where you're starting Tyrod Taylor for the rest of the season.
03:13
I don't think it would make that much of a difference, especially with Garrett Wilson out.
03:16
But the way this season's going, it's looking like the Jets are going to be able to pick
03:21
the top quarterback or just top player in this draft class coming up.
03:25
Let's say it is a quarterback.
03:26
The Jets can go up and get one.
03:28
I mean, do you and the fan base trust Darren Mouji and Aaron Glenn to draft a quarterback
03:33
in the first round next offseason?
03:36
I think the jury's still out on it, to be honest with you.
03:39
I need to see how the next 11 games go with this coaching staff and regime.
03:44
You know, if the draft was today, I think you say no, just based on what we've seen
03:48
through the first six weeks of the year, but still a long way to go in this season.
03:53
You know, they, at least to their credit, seem to have hit on their first round pick
03:57
from a year ago in Armand Membu.
03:59
But drafting a quarterback is really hard.
04:01
The Jets haven't had much luck trying to find their franchise quarterback over the last few
04:05
years.
04:06
You know, whether it's Zach Wilson in 2021 or, you know, Sam Donald, who's playing much
04:10
better football now, but didn't play well for the Jets when he was drafted in 2018 in
04:15
the years that he was here.
04:16
So it's not an easy thing to do.
04:18
And if they finish this season winless, which right now they're 0-6, it's going to be hard
04:24
to justify bringing them back and giving them that option, I think.
04:27
You mentioned Zach Wilson and Sam Donald, two quarterbacks that they drafted.
04:31
If you throw in Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields, two guys that they got a free agency, those
04:36
guys are kind of struggling.
04:38
Two of those guys on that list, like you've mentioned, have gone on to play 50 times better
04:45
than what they did while they were wearing green.
04:47
So in your opinion, like, why is playing quarterback for the Jets a death trap?
04:54
Yeah, I think it's a combination of two things.
04:56
One, the coaching, and two, the state of the roster.
04:59
I think, you know, with Zach Wilson, they were in a better spot with some of their weapons
05:03
after that 2022 draft class.
05:06
And some guys just don't have it either.
05:08
Like, that's a part of it.
05:09
But for Sam, I don't think he had the coaching staff in place, even when, you know, they went
05:15
and hired Adam Gase after his rookie season.
05:17
And their offensive line was terrible, and they had no playmakers.
05:21
So I think that was a big part of the reason for Sam in particular with his struggles.
05:26
But for a young quarterback, you want to give him almost a perfect scenario.
05:29
You want to have a strong offensive line, some wide receivers that you trust,
05:33
a strong running game, and put these guys in a situation for them to have success.
05:38
I think the Jets have kind of just thought the last few times that, you know,
05:42
we'll find the quarterback and everything else will fall into place.
05:44
It doesn't always work out that way.
05:46
All right, Matt.
05:46
Thanks for hanging out with me, man.
05:48
Better days are coming.
05:49
I can't promise that, but I hope that.
05:52
I hope so, too.
05:53
Thank you so much.
