00:00I think if Justin Fields goes out and lays another egg against New England,
00:03if it's the first half, maybe there's a change at halftime again. He goes to tie for the second
00:08half. If he plays poorly just overall, maybe go to tie rod against Baltimore and see if he can
00:14spark something in this offense. Hello and welcome to Gangs All Here. My name is Ryan Sampson. That's
00:20our Jets beat writer, Brian Costello. Today is Monday, November 10th. The New York Jets get their
00:24second win of the season against the Cleveland Browns in a barn burner of a game, 27-20,
00:28as Kaz was there yesterday. We're going to get his thoughts about that game,
00:31what the quarterback situation was as the passing game was not pretty yesterday for the Jets,
00:36but they did get the win. And despite all that, we'll talk a little bit about where Aaron Glenn
00:41is going here with the rest of the season with the quarterback situation. We'll get into Brees
00:45Hall, his performance. We'll get into the defense. And then we'll maybe talk a little bit about this
00:49Jets-Patriots game coming up on a short week. But before we get to any of that, Kaz, how you doing,
00:53sir? I'm not answering any questions about the quarterback, Ryan. Okay. Let's write it right
00:58up front. Don't waste my time. I'm not answering it. Okay.
01:01I won't. I won't. I won't waste your time because clearly Aaron Glenn does not want to waste our time
01:06with that as well. But I'll start with just your overall thoughts on the fact that the Jets were
01:11able to get their second win of the season. Wasn't a pretty one, but I want to hear what your
01:15thoughts were. Look, the Jets are not in a position where we need to be evaluating quality of wins,
01:22right? A win is a win. You take it and move on. I think it's important. I think this team needs to
01:28learn how to win and they've won the last two weeks and they won games that maybe they would
01:33have lost in past years or a few months ago. We've seen them, you know, find, invent ways to lose
01:40that they've been good at that the last few years. On Sunday, it was the Browns who committed an
01:45unbelievable holding penalty on third and 17 or whatever it was. And it's the Browns who jumped
01:51offside on fourth down when everyone in the whole building knew the Jets weren't snapping the ball
01:56and they still jumped offside. So the other team did it. So take it. And, um, you know, I think,
02:02I think the Jets need wins, uh, here as, as Aaron Glenn's trying to establish this program. So
02:06yes, is that, is that formula of scoring two return touchdowns and having one screen pass that goes
02:16for 42 yards, a sustainable way to win games? No, but I think it's, it's important for the Jets to
02:23taste winning there. You know, it was a happy locker room again. Uh, I think that's important.
02:28Yeah, it certainly is. And I couldn't agree with you more cause about the fact that this,
02:31this team needs those wins, uh, to get the gritty wins like they did at the end, test them
02:37in situations. It's good also for the coaching staff. It feels like for game situation and like,
02:42how are we going to manage down the stretch that final drive? I thought it was important for them
02:45to get that first down on the first play, uh, on that last drive, just to like establish like, Hey,
02:50we actually have a chance to close this one out. Let's do it. And they did. Um, so I, let's talk
02:55about this, this offense though. Look, Aaron Glenn has been playing the game of, I'm not going to name
03:01a starting quarterback. I, it sounded like before the game against Cincinnati, like he maybe was leaning
03:07towards going to tie rod, but until tie rod got hurt and had that knee injury pop up, it's like,
03:13you know what? We're going to go back to Justin. Uh, we'll, we'll see how it goes. And that was
03:17after Woody Johnson had made those really hard, harsh comments about Justin Fields in his play,
03:22but then they go out and they have this, you know, great offensive game of 500 yards of offense
03:27against the worst defense in the NFL. You could argue. Um, so you had to go back to Justin after the
03:32bi-week, right? It was more of the same yesterday with Justin Fields. So I want to hear
03:37where you think this is going with the quarterback situation, despite the struggles, like how is
03:45Aaron Glenn and Tanner Engstrand going to manage this going forward between Justin and maybe tie rod?
03:52Yeah, I don't know how they're going to manage it, Ryan. I can give what I think they should do.
03:56Um, look, it's a short week, so I don't think you can make a change this week. The jets really
04:00don't even have a practice, right? We're recording this on Monday. They'll meet today. They'll walk
04:05through some corrections and stuff Tuesday. They'll have a light practice, but it's,
04:09you know, it's two days after a game. You're not doing a ton. And then Wednesday is the day
04:13before a game and you're doing, you know, they're traveling, you're, they're doing walkthroughs,
04:17that kind of thing. So I think it'd be very hard, even with a veteran to change quarterbacks on a
04:22short week, but then you've got extra time before Baltimore. So I think if Justin Fields goes out and
04:27lays another egg against new England, if it's the first half, maybe there's a change at halftime.
04:32Again, he goes to tire for the second half. If he plays poorly, just overall, maybe you're
04:36going to tie rod against Baltimore and, you know, see if he can spark something in this
04:40offense. I don't, it's not like Tyra Taylor is going to be Joe Montana or anything here,
04:45but you know, it's hard to even evaluate receivers right now. And right. The jets are going to have
04:52to make decisions on John Mechie and AD Mitchell and Tyler Johnson and, uh, you know, Isaiah
04:58Williams, like, do they bring these guys back next year in the receiving room? And I, I don't really
05:03think they're getting a fair shake right now. They threw 11 passes on Sunday and it's, it's hard to
05:07two of them. He completed two passes past the line of scrimmage, which is pretty incredible.
05:12So, um, tough to judge that stuff. So I think Tyra at least could give you a competent offense,
05:17but like I said, I don't think anything's happening this week.
05:21Yeah. It's interesting. You say nothing's going to happen this week on the short week. I mean,
05:24look, Isaiah Williams is your leading wide receiver with four yards receiving yesterday. That's,
05:29that's almost impossible to do in today's NFL to have to win a football game, let alone,
05:35and only have four yards receiving for your leading receiver. I mean,
05:39look, what's crazy, Ryan. What's crazy is I feel like those of us who've been watching the jets,
05:45we've seen this before. Like, remember like 2022 when they were playing around Zach Wilson,
05:51right? Like they were winning all those games, like in green Bay and, uh, Denver. And it was
05:56like, they were playing basically around him. And then even in 2023, when Aaron Rogers got hurt and
06:03like they had the game against the giants, the Tommy DeVito game, where it was basically they were
06:08playing without a quarterback and, and they won that game. It's crazy. Like we've seen this so many
06:13times it's nuts. And I thought this summed it up to me today was Aaron Rogers had some nice,
06:21Aaron Glenn had some nice things to say about Justin Fields today about him throwing an interception.
06:27So he was praising him, which I get for being aggressive. Cause we've talked about,
06:31he needs to be more aggressive. So Aaron Glenn was complimenting him on his, on being aggressive,
06:35which was an interception. So it's kind of a, I I'm not sure I've ever seen that one before.
06:40It's like Aaron, it's Aaron Boone defending his players when they do bad plays. You know,
06:45we, I thought we had a really good approach. You know, I think guys put some good swings on
06:49balls, but none of them actually went out or none of them became a base hit. It's like,
06:52Justin's not even completing the ball downfield. That's the, that's the issue. Like you need a
06:57balance in offense. And I know I sound hysterical or like I'm, I'm complaining, but it's like,
07:02look, you're not going to win many football games. In fact, it was 225 and Oh,
07:09when an opposing defense holds an offense to 175 yards or less with no turnovers, it's like
07:14it never happens. So that was a miracle that they won that game yesterday. But if you want balance
07:20and you want to actually be competitive in football games, we're going to see more of the
07:24same cause. I feel like in this week against the Patriots, where you're down three scores early
07:28because your offense can't get anything going. And the rest of it's going to be garbage time
07:32stat padding. You need to have a balanced attack. You have to be able to throw the ball downfield.
07:37And like you said, to an even better point, you got to evaluate these wide receivers.
07:41Who knows what Arian Smith is? The guy's barely getting a chance out there to run routes. So
07:46when he is getting open, he's not even getting the shot down the field with the ball because
07:49Justin's refusing to pull the trigger in the right moment. So I just, would it shock you if
07:55they bench him at halftime when they're down big against the Patriots in this upcoming week?
07:59No, no, it wouldn't shock me. You know, I was thinking it yesterday, honestly.
08:03Yeah. Uh, yesterday was weird at halftime because they, the first quarter was such a
08:08weird quarter because they had the two returns. So the offense really wasn't, wasn't on the
08:11field very much. So I was like, yeah, he's probably going to say he not enough of a sample
08:16size to bench him off of. And, you know, but I thought at halftime, I was, I was thinking
08:22about it, right. When they came out after the second half, my binoculars were on the sideline
08:26to see if Tyrod was putting his helmet on. So, um, yeah, I wouldn't, no, it would not shock
08:31me if that happens Thursday night. Yeah. I just, I, I, I want this Shets franchise to
08:36finally become a modern NFL offense. And, and like, I give him credit for sticking with
08:41the run with breeze because that turned out to be the key to winning this game at the
08:45end was using breeze both in the run and pass game. But there's going to be all these opposing
08:51teams. We're just going to say, we're going to continue to stack the box. You're not going
08:54to be able to run the ball against us. We'll force Justin to throw the ball. And it's going
08:58to be an easy formula for opposing defenses to win these football games. So I, again, I'm going to
09:02be paying attention like you are. How early can Aaron Glenn pull the trigger? If he sees this
09:07offense is sputtering again, and it's not moving the ball at all in the passing game. Uh, let's talk
09:12about breeze hall though. Cause again, 21 carries 83 yards, uh, rushing four yards to carry. He had
09:18that one catch that obviously went for the touchdown on the screen pass. This is two weeks in a row or two
09:23games in a row. I should say where breeze has really taken over for this offense and shown how
09:28special, and we talked about it last week, a home run hitter. So, you know, is this more evidence of
09:35why the jets shouldn't have traded him and held onto him like they did? And should they extend him in
09:40the off season? Yeah. I think those are two different questions that the, as far as this season,
09:46yeah. Like where would the jets have been Sunday without breeze hall offensively? Right. I mean,
09:50he did, he did it all for them. Um, so that was what we're kind of talking about is if they traded
09:56him, the jets offense was going to be non-existent, especially with Garrett banged up, you know,
10:02Garrett's not, Garrett's not reliable right now. So breeze is really their only option
10:06terms of next year. Yeah. I mean, I think he's making a case for himself. He's a good back,
10:12right? I think he's a good running back and, uh, he can be a nice piece of the offense going forward.
10:18So I think they need to try to figure something out, whether that's a, you know, a contract for,
10:23for three years, something like that, or if they're going to end up using one of the tags on him.
10:27Uh, I think, I think he should be here in 2026. Cause I, you're also, if you let him go,
10:32you're creating another hole on your team. And why would you do that? Yeah. You know,
10:36unless his demands are less, his demands are just so outrageous. Uh, and, uh, Brian Dable has been fired.
10:42Oh my God. Wow. Wow. Well, we'll finish up here quickly. Cause, uh, for sure. I'm sure you guys,
10:52you gotta go do a giant. We gotta go do a giant pod and get that cranking man. Holy crap. They
10:57fired Brian Dable. That's crazy. Um, look for, for the breeze part too. I do wonder like,
11:04it'd be good to have him as a weapon for that rookie quarterback potentially that you could be
11:10taking in the draft. And it feels like you'd be putting that rookie in a tougher spot. If you're
11:15asking him to develop with a, another rookie running back or another, you know, young running
11:19back that's unproven. So I just feel like that would be a better support system with a Garrett
11:24and a breeze for potential rookie quarterback. Yeah. Yeah. We've talked about that a few times,
11:28right? It's like, you know, the Sam Donald conversation is an interesting one right now.
11:34And it's pretty clear. The Jets didn't necessarily get that pick wrong. They just didn't have the right
11:39people here to develop him and support him. And, you know, when you look back at some of those games,
11:45you look at who he was playing with, it's pretty rough. So I think that's a good point. I think they
11:50need to have as strong an offense, especially around them with good defense too, but to help a rookie
11:55quarterback develop and come along quickly, if that's the direction they're going, which I think,
12:01you know, is the, is the route we expect them to take in 2026.
12:06Yeah. It would, uh, it's just, I love Reese. I love the player. I think he's so talented and,
12:12and I just would love to see him stay here and, and help build this team the right way. And I,
12:18and I think he, like we've seen the last two games, he could take over and he just,
12:22he could be really special with the ball in his hands. Uh, right. He had some,
12:25some runs yesterday, right? Cause like you talk about like stack of the box where they were
12:29stack in the box and he, I just watched that one. He broke in the fourth court on the left
12:33sideline. Like there was a guy right in the hole and he popped it outside and went, I think 30 yards
12:39or something like that. So yeah, he, um, you know, he's impressive. He really is a final thing cause for
12:47you. Um, look, the jets have a tough schedule going down here. Like they have a lot of teams
12:54like Baltimore, the bills again, the Patriots, obviously twice. How many more wins are this
13:00Jesse really going to get? And is it all really? I don't think it's that crazy a schedule, right?
13:05Really? You think it's that tough? I do. Like the next two weeks are tough. I'm going to get
13:09my schedule over, over my computer here. It's the next two weeks are tough. Patriots and the
13:13at the Ravens. Yep. But Atlanta, I don't know what Atlanta is. They just gave the Colts a run for
13:18their money. Okay. I know the dolphins just beat the bills too, right? Like crazy. That was a trap
13:23game. That was a trap game. Oh, but every week there's just crazy things happen. Okay. So I,
13:29I'm not saying you're not going to sit here and tell me the Atlanta Falcons are definitely beating
13:32the jets. I think they definitely are because a hundred percent, a hundred percent. I have a chance
13:37in that game. They don't have a chance in that game. Oh my God. They got Mike. The quarterback isn't
13:41that good. They almost beat the Patriots in new England too.
13:47They, they, the jets can beat the Falcons. I'm going to go there. The jets can beat the
13:50dolphins. The jets can beat the Jaguars. The jets could beat the saints. Yes. So that's
13:56four games I'm giving you. They could win. I'm not saying they're winning those four, but
14:00let's say they split those four. That's two. You're giving me two wins. They get the four
14:05wins. No. And then the jets always have one of these shocking. You don't see coming wins
14:12to me. It's that new England game at the end of the year. They're going to pull off an upset.
14:17I think they already got their shocking win yesterday over the Browns. Well, that was the
14:22Browns though. No, I mean, like they upset a good team, like the Eagles, right? Eagles in 2023,
14:27they pull that off Packers in 2022. They, they surprise everybody. I'm trying to think last
14:36year. There wasn't, there wasn't many, there wasn't many good ones. Well, Houston was a surprise
14:40last year on Halloween. They were down the down was surprised, but yeah, I, yeah, I think I still
14:46think they can win five games, right? I wish I had your hope. I really do not. Listen, if they go to
14:52tie rod, I'd say they have a chance at five wins. Okay. Well they might go to tie rod. They might
14:57this week. I think at some point, at some point you're going to go to tie rod. No, like I, they
15:01look at the, the three games right now I'm looking at and you're like, I, I give them no shot our
15:06Thursday next week in Baltimore and Buffalo at the end of the year. If Buffalo is playing for
15:11something, which it was like, Patriots need that win at the end. Okay. But the Patriots have a
15:18second year quarterback. They, they've, they've, he's playing great. He's still a second year
15:23quarterback. They're not, they're not like unbeatable. They're not the Kansas city chiefs
15:29sitting there. They, the jets could, the, it's a division opponent. Maybe it's a trap game, Ryan.
15:36Are we watching the same Patriots team guys? Come on. Maybe it's a trap game. So, so you, you had the
15:42Dolphins beating the bills yesterday. It's a trap game. They always suck in buff. They always suck
15:47in Miami. Okay. But if I asked you Saturday, you said, Oh, the Dolphins are going to beat
15:50the bills. I said they had a really good chance that the Dolphin, the Dolphins upsetting the
15:54bills. It's a trap game. Crazy, crazy things happen in this league. Certainly so. Jets are
16:02playing the Patriots. We don't even know who the people get hurt too. You don't even know
16:05who someone could be hurt at some point, you know, we'll see. That's Brian Costello. I'm Ryan
16:10Sampson's gangs all here. We'll be back on Wednesday to preview the jets Patriots short week
