00:00The Lucy Show
00:10Starring Lucille Ball
00:16Co-starring Gail Gordon
00:21The Lucy Show
00:45Now, ladies, this coat is one of our most exclusive cream
00:50Notice the flared bottoms, the high-style collar, the flawless blending of the skins, the deep, rich collar
00:59This coat is of exceptional value. It's only $16,000
01:07Oh, that is exceptional, Lucille
01:11Oh, yes, darling, but it is so common
01:15There's only one other coat like this in the entire world
01:20And that coat is worn by the Queen of England
01:24Oh, dear
01:25In that case, I couldn't possibly buy it
01:28The Queen and I go to all the same party
01:33Sorry about that
01:34I think I have just the coat for you
01:38Pardon me, Georgia
01:40You were right, this is fun
01:48I wonder what she'd do if she knew we only had 27 cents between us
01:52Oh, this is a wonderful place to spend your lunch hour when you can't afford lunch
01:59Are you sure they have tea and sandwiches here?
02:04Yes, all the high-class stores do
02:06I go to a different store every Friday
02:12Where are you going?
02:13To get a sandwich
02:14Let's then cool it, girl, cool it
02:15Remember, we're rich, not hungry
02:17I'm not hungry, I'm starved
02:19Well, so am I, but let's not be obvious
02:21We don't want them to think that's all we came here for
02:24They'll sort of
02:25Some sandwiches for you, ladies?
02:29Oh, well, we're really not hungry
02:31But we'll force ourselves
02:32Ah, well
02:33Yes, if you insist
02:35What kind of sandwich would you like, madam?
02:38Oh, well, I'll have one of those
02:40And one of those
02:41And one of those
02:42And one of those
02:43And you, madam?
02:44And one of those
02:45And one of those
02:46And two of those
02:47Madam, this is you
02:50Frinchilla
02:52Why doesn't madam try it on?
02:56Why don't you try it on, Lucy?
02:58Just wearing it will give you a feel of it
03:00So much better than my mere words
03:03Notice that while the fur is as soft as Gossiver
03:08It is both thick and rich
03:10Notice the fullness of the coat
03:12See how it flares when you turn around
03:15Turn around a few times
03:17And I must draw your attention to the fact
03:20That we have used only the tops of the pelts
03:25Not the sides or tummies
03:28No tummies?
03:29No
03:30And madam, an extra conversation or piece
03:34Is the fact
03:35That the hem can be turned into a stole for the evening
03:41Oh!
03:42Why doesn't madam try it on?
03:44Oh, why it's
03:46It's really
03:48It's quite enchanting really
03:50This coat is consisted of
03:52Haunted Peruvian pelts
03:55Which are in their natural state
03:59And have not been lightened or brightened
04:01Or in any way artificially enhanced
04:04And the price, madam, is only $35,000
04:11Oh!
04:16Madam, all right?
04:19Oh, it's really beautiful, Lucille
04:22Oh, madam, the coat is you
04:25It's really you
04:27This is lovely
04:28Why don't you get it?
04:36No, actually, I don't think that I'll take this one
04:40But why, madam?
04:41Well, to tell you the truth, darling
04:43It depresses me
04:45It depresses me to think of all those little chinchillae
04:49Running around with just sides and backs and no tummies
04:54Oh, I see, madam
04:56I'm sorry we had nothing to please you
04:58That's all
04:59Perhaps some other time
05:00How about next Friday?
05:02Madam is always welcome
05:05Thank you
05:10Listen, they have wonderful food here
05:13Oh, it's so good
05:14Hey, our lunch hour is over
05:16Come on, let's go
05:17Okay, let's go
05:18Hey, Pat
05:23Hey, Pat
05:24Hi
05:25Oh, hi, Mary Jean
05:26How are you?
05:27Lucy, yeah, fine
05:28I'd like you to meet a friend of mine
05:29This is Lucy Carmichael
05:31This is Miss Pat, the famous hypnotist
05:34Oh, Miss Pat
05:36Oh, the hip hypnotist
05:38Oh, I am so glad to meet you
05:41I've heard so much about you
05:43It must be wonderful being a hypnotist
05:46It comes in handy sometimes
05:48She's really remarkable, Lucy
05:50She can make people do practically anything
05:52Really?
05:53Yeah, she hypnotized me
05:54And stopped me from biting my nails
05:56That's right
05:57I didn't know you ever bit your nails
05:58Oh, I used to
05:59It was a terrible habit
06:00When I went to an exciting movie
06:02I'd bite off my nails
06:04And then I'd bite off all my boyfriends
06:06What's that?
06:08Isn't that great?
06:10Well, she's just amazing
06:12She can make people do all sorts of things
06:14Well, what are some of the other things?
06:16Well, she can make people get over the fear of flying
06:20Uh-huh
06:21Or...
06:22Keep them from overeating
06:23And I can help you stop smoking
06:25Or if you're not able to sleep at night
06:26I can give you a suggestion
06:27Oh, that's good to know
06:29Well, if I'm ever bothered by any of those things
06:31I'd like to come and see you
06:32Where's your office?
06:33Oh, I don't have an office
06:35I'm not a doctor, Lucy
06:36Oh, oh
06:37But I'll tell you what
06:38I'm working at the Royal Club
06:39And you can come participate in my act
06:40How's that?
06:41You're appearing at the Royal Club?
06:43Oh, I'd love to do that
06:44Would you have some knives?
06:45Oh, I'd love it
06:46Thank you
06:47It was nice seeing you, Mary Jean
06:48I have to go and pick up my new coat
06:49Bye-bye, Lucy
06:50We'll see you soon
06:51Bye-bye
06:52I wonder what kind of a fur coat she's getting
06:55Probably rabbit
06:57Rabbit?
06:58Sure, she could hypnotize herself into thinking it's mink
07:01Well, it's a lot cheaper that way
07:03She saves a lot of money
07:04Can I just sign that yours truly, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera
07:13Now, let me see this next letter
07:15This goes to Rylander and Moser
07:17Rylander and Moser, yes sir
07:19Yes, yes
07:20Gentlemen
07:21I feel it would be mutually beneficial if we...
07:25Oh, oh, my...
07:27What's the matter, Miss Mooney? Something wrong?
07:29Yes, yes, I've got a splitting headache
07:31Do you know I haven't slept for three nights?
07:35Oh...
07:36Oh, well, then that explains it
07:38That explains what?
07:39Why you're such a big grouch
07:41What?
07:42I mean, uh...
07:43Why you're a bigger grouch than usual
07:46What?
07:47I mean, oh dear
07:48I know what you mean
07:50I can't say that I blame you
07:52I must admit that for the past two days
07:55I haven't been my usual Mr. Nice Guy
07:58Well, no need to apologize, sir
08:02Going without sleep for three nights
08:04Would put a strain on anybody
08:06Yes, but it's more of a strain for me
08:08When I stay awake, I have to look at my wife
08:12Oh, this going without sleep is driving me crazy
08:15And I've tried everything
08:16Like what?
08:17Well, I've taken pills
08:19Taken warm milk
08:20I've counted sheep
08:22I even tried listening to Wayne King records
08:27Didn't help a bit
08:28If I could just get a good night's sleep
08:33Oh, Miss Mooney, I've got it
08:34What, what, what, what, what?
08:35I know how you can get a good night's sleep
08:37How, how, how, how?
08:38Hypnotism
08:39Hypnotism?
08:40Yes, I know a hypnotist
08:42Mrs. Carmichael
08:43I appreciate your thinking about me
08:45But hypnotism is a lot of nonsense
08:48No, it isn't
08:49Hypnotists have helped lots of people with lots of things
08:52Like, um, like, like getting over the fear of jumping out of airplanes
08:58With a parachute, you know
09:00Oh, really?
09:01Well, you've tried everything else
09:03What do you got to lose?
09:04You can't go on without sleep
09:05Oh, no, no, that's right, that's right
09:07Well, all right, you call this hypnotist friend of yours
09:10And tell him I'd like an appointment for five o'clock this afternoon
09:13Oh, Miss Mooney, it's not a him, it's a her
09:15And you cannot see her privately
09:17You, uh, you have to go to the nightclub where she's appearing
09:20And, and get into her act
09:23Get into her act?
09:27Have you flipped your flaming wig?
09:32Well, she helps people who can't sleep
09:34Mrs. Carmichael, I am a banker
09:36I cannot appear in a nightclub act
09:38I have to uphold the dignity of my job
09:41Well, if you keep going without sleep
09:43You won't even have a job
09:44You're liable to get fired
09:46And it'll be pretty hard getting another job at your age
09:51I'm not that old
09:55Well, well, maybe I better not take a chance
09:58All right, where is this hypnotist appearing?
10:00At the Royal Club
10:01I'll take you there tonight
10:03Well, thank you, but you don't have to take me
10:05Oh, all right
10:06We'll go Dutch
10:07We'll go Dutch
10:08Boy, did I make a mistake coming here tonight
10:22Why do you say that?
10:24Well, if you think I'm going to get up there and make a fool of myself in front of all these people
10:39Oh, Mr. Mooney, now there's nothing to be afraid of
10:42Ladies and gentlemen
10:44I can help you
10:45The Royal Club proudly presents
10:47The Hyp Hypnotist
10:49Miss Carmichael
10:51Thank you very much, thank you, good evening
10:57For those of you who have never seen a hypnotic show before
11:01I'm going to give you a very brief explanation of what is about to happen up here
11:05Once again in a few moments, I'm going to invite about five or six of you to come up on the stage and volunteer to be hypnotized
11:11Now, this is for real
11:12If you'd like to come up, you're more than welcome
11:14But before you venture up here, I want to explain to you exactly how you're going to feel
11:17Because most people really do not understand the science of hypnosis
11:20Now, they seem to think if they come up here and go under, they're going to become unconscious and not know what they're doing
11:25And that's very, very wrong
11:26They also seem to think that I hypnotize them, which is very wrong
11:29You actually hypnotize yourself
11:31You do this by concentrating, by taking my suggestions
11:34Once you go under hypnosis, you're not unconscious, you're fully aware of everything that's happening
11:37You're just very, very relaxed
11:39You're reacting to suggestions that happen in your imagination
11:43You're reacting with a reflex on your part
11:46You won't change in any way
11:48If you're shy, you'll be shy when you're hypnotized
11:50If you're an extrovert, you're going to be an extrovert
11:52The beauty of it is that most of us think we're shy, you know
11:54Until we get hypnotized
11:56I guarantee you'll have a marvelous time as you come up here
11:59You'll go under, you'll be very creative
12:01The biggest bonus that you got out of the host show is the fact that the 45 minutes to an hour
12:05That you will be up here, under hypnosis, is the equivalent of eight to ten hours sleep
12:09So, if you'd like to give it a try, you're more than welcome
12:12All I ask of you is that you're serious, that you want to be hypnotized
12:15Those of you that want to try, come on up right now and we'll start the show
12:17Let's go
12:19If you will come with me, I'll take you to the moon
12:31Look in my eyes, you'll see what I need
12:37Take my hand and follow me
12:43I'm sorry, we don't have any more shares
12:45I'll take you to the stars
12:49All right, we're going to begin with the people that are on the stage
12:53And we want all of you to kind of quiet down
12:55So I can put these people on the stage under hypnosis
12:57We have to have it quiet, I'm sorry
12:59Sorry, quiet and settled
13:01Hi, how are you?
13:02Remember me?
13:03No
13:05Well, I'm the girl that has a girlfriend who bites her boyfriend's nails
13:10Oh
13:11Lucy, Lucy, Carmichael
13:12Yeah
13:13All right, we're going to begin with these people that are on the stage
13:17I'm going to ask all of you in the room to please be very, very quiet now
13:19As we put them under hypnosis
13:21Once they've gone under you can make all the noise that you want to
13:23Okay, thank you very much
13:24Now, those of you on the stage, I want you to settle back in your seats
13:26Get your feet flat on the floor
13:28Put your hands on your lap
13:29Feet flat, honey
13:30That a girl
13:31Now, keep your hands open
13:32Don't close them because they start to tingle
13:34Those of you on the stage, I want you to settle back and look directly into one of the spotlights
13:37And, um, stare into the spotlight
13:39Which is something to focus on
13:41Now, I'm going to begin by relaxing all of you
13:44So stare at the one object
13:45Now, I want all of you to take a very deep breath
13:48Relax your body
13:49Now concentrate on the sound of my voice
14:03Now, when I count to three, all of you on the stage, raise your left arm high and the air light as a feather
14:06When I count to three, all of you put your left arm up high in the air
14:09One, two, and three, raise your left arm
14:11All of you raise your left arm
14:12Now concentrate on the muscles in your left arm
14:14Your left arm, when I count to three, make it rigid as a piece of steel
14:16Lock every muscle in your left arm in the count of three and go deeper sleep
14:19One, two, and three, arm rigid
14:21Left arm stiff and rigid as a steel bar
14:22Every muscle in your arm is locked tight
14:24Every muscle in your left arm is locked tight and you cannot lower your arm
14:26You cannot lower your arm, physically impossible
14:28Physically impossible to lower your arm, trying to put it down, but you cannot
14:31Try and put it down, but you cannot get it down
14:33Now you realize that you are hypnotized, this is all there is to it
14:35Without the rest of the show, you will do only as my voice tells you
14:37You will have a marvelous time with suggestion
14:39All inhibitions are gone, you are not embarrassed
14:41All of you take another deep breath, relax
14:43Now every muscle in your body, loose and heavy
14:45Relax that left arm, let it fall down, and go deeper sleep
14:48Relax every muscle in your body
14:50Now, for those of you who have never seen my show before
14:52I am going to explain to you what we are going to do
14:54The first five minutes of all of my shows
14:56I work with the people on the stage
14:58Give them suggestions to see what kind of personalities and reflexes they have
15:01Keep in mind, they know what they are doing
15:03I am giving them these suggestions to see how fast they are, how slow they are
15:06Who is shy, who is an extrovert and so on
15:08It is all in their imagination
15:09They do not really see a funny movie, but they laugh at it
15:11And they do not really get hot or cold, but they fan themselves
15:14It is beautiful to watch, hysterical
15:16It is wonderful to listen to
15:17They say very funny things, people that are hypnotized
15:19Because they are creative and they do not think they are under
15:21The other night when I was doing the funny movie thing
15:23Everybody was laughing at one little old man who kept insisting he wasn't under
15:25He just goes, ahh, you know
15:27And I said, what is wrong?
15:28He said, I saw that movie
15:29So they say funny things, enjoy yourself, okay
15:31When I count to three, I am taking all of you on the stage
15:33It is a very funny movie and you are going to laugh out loud
15:35All of you on the stage will laugh out loud on the count of three louder than you have ever laughed before in your life
15:38Because you think you see the movie, do not awaken
15:40One, two and three, there it is the funniest thing that you have ever seen
15:42On the stage, laugh out loud and enjoy yourself
15:44All of you laugh out loud and enjoy yourself
15:46And go deeper and deeper in sleep
15:47Do not awaken until I say it is the funniest movie you have ever seen
15:49Now, when I count to three, all of you stop laughing and freeze
15:52One, two and three, freeze
15:54Why?
15:56Marvelous
15:57Look at this face of
15:59Oh, I have to talk to this one
16:00This is the one I have to talk to first
16:02He is great
16:03Useful of touching
16:04Just kind of relax and stand up
16:06The rest of you close your eyes, relax and sleep
16:08I have got to talk to you
16:09Come here, you are marvelous
16:10You are just fantastic
16:11What is your name?
16:12Theodore J. Mooney
16:14Oh, what do you do for a living, Mr. Mooney?
16:16I am a banker
16:17And I might as well tell you that I don't believe in hypnotism
16:21That's all right, because I don't believe in banks
16:23You don't think you're hypnotized?
16:25Well, of course not
16:26I'm not hypnotized
16:27I couldn't be asleep
16:28I have insomnia
16:29Well, that really has nothing to do with it
16:30See, you're relaxed, right?
16:31You're very relaxed and you're happy, right?
16:33See how relaxed?
16:34I'm relaxed
16:35I'm not particularly happy
16:36Oh, you're very happy, Mr. Mooney
16:37So happy you'd like to turn a cartwheel
16:39That's how happy you are
16:40You would
16:41Oh, now that's ridiculous
16:42I've never turned a cartwheel in my life
16:44I don't intend to turn one
16:45But you will when I count to three, one, two, and three
16:47Turn!
16:55And what's more, you cannot make me turn a cartwheel
16:58Oh!
16:59Oh, yes, yes, all right
17:00Well, that's all right, you take my hand
17:01I want you to come over here
17:02And I want you to sit down in your chair
17:04And I want you to go to sleep and work on your insomnia, okay?
17:07You do sit down and relax and sleep way down
17:09Let's talk to the kooky redhead that was giving me all the trouble, all right?
17:12Here's why I'm touching open your eyes to not awaken
17:14Stand up, honey
17:15I want to talk to you
17:16Come on
17:17It's a hot chair, hot chair, hot!
17:19Come on, Beth
17:21Well, what's the matter?
17:23It's hot
17:24Oh, God
17:25We'll pull it out later
17:27You're Lucy, right?
17:29Yes
17:30What do you do for a living, Lucy?
17:32I'm a secretary
17:34Oh, you're not, you're a typewriter
17:35Huh?
17:38It's an electric carriage.
17:42The pun-nosed design.
17:44Oh, wait, wait, wait.
17:45Stop, stop.
17:46What are you doing?
17:46Oh, oh, what are you doing?
17:48Changing my ribbon.
17:51Don't do these funny things.
17:52You better sit down, Lucy.
17:54Just sit down and relax.
17:55You're just yourself, okay?
17:56It's not a hot chair.
17:57You feel great, right?
17:58Good.
17:58Sleep.
17:58Way down.
17:59Deep sleep.
17:59Relax.
18:00Now, all of you on the stage, take a very deep breath,
18:02and when I count to three, I want you to open your eyes,
18:04sit up in your chair,
18:04do not awaken.
18:05There's a fly in your nose.
18:06One, two, and three.
18:07All of you, open your eyes.
18:08Sit up in your chair.
18:08There's a fly in the very tip of your nose.
18:09Get him off.
18:10Get him off.
18:10He tickles you.
18:11He's on the very tip of your nose.
18:12Get him off there.
18:12He's buzzing around.
18:13He's going in your hair.
18:14In your hair on top of your head.
18:15The fly is going all over the place.
18:16And your hair now is buzzing around and around.
18:18The fly is buzzing everywhere.
18:19And all over, the fly is buzzing.
18:21There it goes.
18:21Watching it.
18:22Buzz, buzz, buzz.
18:23It's raw.
18:23Buzz, buzz.
18:24Oh.
18:32That's to happen.
18:33I'm sorry.
18:33I'm sorry.
18:34All of you, freeze.
18:36Sorry about that.
18:37Let's see how creative these people are.
18:39When I count as you, all of you on stage,
18:40you can open your eyes and stand up.
18:41You think you're washing machines.
18:43One, two, and three.
18:43All of you, up.
18:44You're a washing machine.
18:45You're a heck of a washing machine.
18:47You're a great washing machine.
18:48I don't know how old-fashioned Mr. Mooney is.
18:49One of those, you know, up and down things.
18:51You love it.
18:52An agitator.
18:53It's supposed to be an Irish washing machine.
18:55I don't know.
18:55You're getting clogged up.
18:57I think that's the kind you put 25 cents into.
19:00And freeze.
19:01Very creative people.
19:02When I count as you, all of you on stage,
19:03you're coffee pots.
19:05One, two, and three.
19:05You're a coffee pot.
19:08You're wild.
19:09Everybody does it.
19:10You know, we're doing it the thing.
19:12We have a record grind
19:13and a big red-headed drip over here.
19:17I don't know what that is over there,
19:19to tell you the truth.
19:19Freeze.
19:20When I count as you, all of you stage,
19:21you're monsters in a monster movie.
19:23One, two, and three.
19:24You're mean.
19:25And you're ugly.
19:26And you're getting...
19:27Everybody's an actor.
19:28Everybody in the world is a frustrated actor.
19:29And they're all...
19:30Oh, oh, wait.
19:31Freeze.
19:31That's enough of that.
19:32That's enough of that.
19:35When I count as you, all of you on the stage,
19:36except for Lucy,
19:38sit down in your chairs and string some beads.
19:40It's good therapy.
19:40You can make a necklace.
19:41One, two, and three.
19:42Sit down.
19:45Look at that.
19:47Welcome to the wax museum.
19:51Lucy, go ahead.
19:52You sit down and relax
19:53and have fun and string some beads.
19:54These two are perfect for a bit that I do
19:56when I get these kind of people.
19:58I want to do it.
19:58I've got my props over here.
20:00When I count to three,
20:01Lucy and Mr. Mooney,
20:02both of you are going to be
20:04Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
20:06Lucy, on the count of three,
20:07you're Stan Laurel.
20:08And Mr. Mooney, on the count of three,
20:09you're Oliver Hardy.
20:10And you're in a movie
20:12and you're filming a scene
20:13where you're in a park
20:14and it's very hot
20:15and Oliver's drinking water
20:16and it's fun.
20:18And when I count to three,
20:19the rest of you will just kind of sleep
20:20while they make this movie.
20:21One, two, and three.
20:22One, two, and three.
20:24I don't want to be late, Ollie.
20:43Don't worry, Stanley.
20:45We've got plenty of time.
20:47What time is it, Ollie?
20:51I'll look.
20:54Oh, oh, please, you're drinking.
21:07What a mess you got me into, Stanley.
21:12I'm sorry, Ollie.

21:37Don't think I didn't have it in mid-air.
21:40I think I'm going to send them
21:41all back to their seats.
21:42When I count to three,
21:43all of you on the stage
21:44will go back to your seats
21:45in the audience,

24:11Aren't you even
24:12going to try it?
24:13Well, of course not.

24:16that a grown man
24:17is going to put himself
24:18to sleep simply by saying
