01:57And I know you also know that the best Christmas is a safe Christmas.
02:04So while you are shopping and enjoying this Christmas season, remember these simple safety
02:11tips from the TTPS.
02:14Avoid wearing excessive jewelry while shopping.
02:18Slashy items can make you an easy target.
02:23Don't leave bags or valuable items on the seats of your vehicle in plain sight.
02:28Instead, lock them away in the trunk of the vehicle or take them with you.
02:35Carrying excess bags or parcels can make you vulnerable.
02:40Use a sturdy bag with a secure zipper or ask someone for assistance.
02:47Let's make this Christmas season a safe and joyful one.
02:52Be alert, be safe, be aware.
02:56Merry Christmas from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
03:16Welcome to Beyond the Tip and welcome to our viewers across Trinidad and Tobago and our
03:20global viewers.
03:21It's Friday.
03:22It's the last day of the week and it's four days before Christmas, give or take.
03:28And you know, just a couple hours ago, the Minister of National Security made an announcement
03:34where they have initiated a committee comprising of public servants, retired public servants
03:42where they will be actually have been appointed in a fact-finding mission to investigate and
03:50look into closer the fire that claimed the lives of MP Lisa Julian Morris as well as
03:57her two children.
03:59Images here of the members of that team being given the instruments of appointment by the
04:06Minister of National Security earlier today.
04:10He did indicate as well in that particular briefing that they would also be seeking the
04:18assistance of law enforcement authorities and others.
04:23He also mentioned, you know, trying to scour that street there to get any CCTV footage
04:30through with the assistance of the elite gathering unit in this country, the SSA, Strategic Services
04:37Agency.
04:38And so recently he has given the mandate of the team has been given a mandate rather of
04:46two weeks to complete their fact-finding mission.
04:49And it's Friday and with us today is Acting Sergeant Greenidge.
04:53He's from the Northern Division of the Community Oriented Policing Section.
04:58Welcome, Mr. Greenidge.
05:01Thank you, Mark.
05:02Good afternoon, Toronto Bay Gouan.
05:03I'd like to say on behalf of the Toronto Bay Gouan Police Service, season greetings to
05:07all as we enter the entire season in full blast.
05:12And I imagine we were talking about the traffic, even to get out, to get here from the east.
05:19Yes, it was just to traverse from Piakou, from BWI Boulevard to the highway took us
05:26like 15 minutes, right?
05:29Traffic is crazy out there.
05:30Yeah.
05:31And we're still asking our driving population to take their time and do so within the confines
05:38of the law.
05:39Yeah, that is extremely important as we go into the next couple of days, it's virtually
05:46a long week coming up this weekend into the long weekend, you know, Christmas, Boxing
05:53Day and so on.
05:54And obviously, you know, I have to share the sentiments of Acting Sergeant Greenidge by
06:00asking you all to be cautious on the roadways.
06:04And then we also have this troubling issue of, you know, these homicides, we are an inch
06:09closer to 600.
06:11We had two last night or yesterday afternoon, last night, that pushed the count, according
06:17to the police, it was 595.
06:20Yes, it is in fact unfortunate.
06:24And I'm certain Mark, you're observing that there are boots on the ground, a lot of police
06:28presence.
06:29Yet, the situation continues.
06:33I think what we need to focus on at some point, starting from now as a matter of fact, is
06:40the cause, the underlying issues, right?
06:43Because the constant presence of police will only give people time if they want to do something,
06:51unless of course, we are able to start to change mindset and culture.
06:54Yes, I think therein our focus should be.
06:56Well, we hope for that, you know, in the new year to come that we don't see this kind of
07:00bloodletting that we are seeing currently.
07:02Well, we remain steadfast in our cause as TTPS and we will not give up the fight.
07:08Yes, of course.
07:09All right, we're going to take a look now at our headlines.
07:32So, those are some of the headlines within the last 24 hours.
07:47And we were talking about the homicide rate.
07:50Only last night, the latest homicide victim, Akeem Green, alias Reddo, shot and killed
07:58in Laramie, along Ethel Street, around 9.45.
08:02That's Mr. Green there.
08:04Apparently, he was driving along the street, I understand.
08:08When his car, his Mazda, he was made to stop.
08:12And I think when he stopped, I don't know for what reason, though, if somebody put something
08:16in the roadway or whatever, I think he came out of the vehicle, a gunman approached him
08:21and shot him several times.
08:24Now, my understanding is after that, a friend of the family actually took the car home and
08:32told one of his brothers of what had just transferred a couple of minutes ago.
08:36The police are still trying to work on a theory about why he was shot and killed.
08:41But certainly, it's really sad that it's only 34 years of age, a relatively young guy shot
08:47and killed.
08:48Gun violence again.
08:49Rareness, ugliness.
08:51Against the point, we are assiduously getting the firearms off the street, but it seems
08:57as though the more you take off, the more it plays on, right?
09:01Unless, of course, as I said earlier, we start to focus on changing culture and mindset,
09:07this will be a recurring decimal.
09:09Yes.
09:10And earlier yesterday evening, there was another shooting.
09:15This, even just as equally worrying, a Colombian contractor by the name of Jose Luis shot and
09:23killed in Canopia just before 6 o'clock.
09:29My understanding, acting Inspector Greenwich, was that he left the bank supposedly with
09:37a sum of money and came back to the job site, I imagine maybe to pay workers.
09:42When he was ambushed, shot several times, I think they might have also stolen cash and
09:50jewelry of some significance from that.
09:54And we have been talking a lot about people going to the banks and staggering your activities
10:00or your movements.
10:01Situation and awareness, all these things.
10:03I'm an acting sergeant, but I'll take the blessing of the acting inspector.
10:07Okay, my apologies.
10:09Yes, we keep talking about safety and walking around with these large sums of cash and so
10:16on that will draw attention to you, right?
10:20It is a challenge, and we know that sometimes as citizens, we may want to sacrifice convenience
10:26to safety, and unfortunately, sometimes we face challenges like these, right?
10:34So we ask residents every day, we continue to edify them in terms of personal safety
10:40and security, ensuring that you watch your surroundings at all times, situational awareness
10:45and so on, right?
10:47If you do have to walk with large sums of cash, ensure that they have some security
10:51arrangement in place, right?
10:54Because the good thing is, the cash will be able to be replaced, but we cannot replace
11:00human life.
11:01Yes, well said, because as you said, it's pretty difficult, you know, not everybody
11:07can afford security, but if you are running a business where people are seeing that you
11:11have to go to the bank because you have a number of employees to pay, then they will
11:16see a particular trend that goes every Tuesday at three o'clock, whatever the case.
11:21So it is important not to build a routine, right?
11:23And personal safety doesn't necessarily mean that you hire a security firm.
11:28Just by doing that, by staggering the hours and so on, are in fact security initiatives
11:33you can take for your personal safety.
11:35And that situational awareness you speak about also redounds to even the shoppers, and we're
11:43going to show you a video earlier today, downtown Port of Spain, where a lady was walking down
11:52the street when a man allegedly tried to snatch a person.
11:56This is what transpired.
12:00So it seems within minutes of that, you can walk us through, because I understand you
12:05know the officers involved.
12:06Yes, Sir, and I'm very, very proud this afternoon to highlight and indicate that these two officers
12:12are in fact attached to the Community Oriented Policing Section, Corporal Oh and PC Daniel.
12:21They both excellent, keen powers of observation, and as I said, during the entire season, we
12:26are seeing boots on the ground where the police service is concerned.
12:30So they were there, and they were not just present, they actually initiated and got the
12:35arrest.
12:36And it's one less good person up the street.
12:40Yes, I mean, as you said, situational awareness is key as we go into the next couple of days.
12:48What are your movements?
12:50If you can, don't move along with a lot of things, items, because people can tend to
12:55run past and grab stuff, and then you, you know?
12:58Your cell phone.
12:59We tend to be controlled by the cell phone now, which distracts us in terms of observing
13:06our environment, our immediate environment, the wearing of flashy jewelry, and all these
13:11things that can attract criminals, even when we park our vehicles, right, we have to be
13:15very selective about these things to ensure that we are safe.
13:20Yeah, and we really want to encourage you all out there.
13:24If you're going to the malls, if you're coming down to Portersfield, San Fernando, Chagones,
13:29Arima, to do shopping, you know, training is like last minute.
13:34Yes, we do.
13:35So you see, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, yeah, because that's what we like to do, right?
13:42But on a really serious note, we really would want you guys to be, you know, exercise that
13:46caution and that situational awareness.
13:50If you're going into an area that you're not entirely certain of, or you're not familiar
13:54with, maybe have a friend or two with you, you guys go together, you know, moving in
13:59groups in this case will help if you're accosted by one person or two people.
14:04Additionally, Mark, we'd like the public to avoid these too-good-to-be-true deals in these
14:09areas that are known hotspots, right?
14:12We are still seeing incidents of persons either being hoodwinked or robbed in certain areas
14:18that we know we face challenges in, right?
14:21It would be wise to do your transactions within the precincts of a police institution.
14:28We see the St. Joseph Police Club offering their facility as a space in which you can
14:33do transactions safely and securely.
14:36Great.
14:37I hope that everyone takes heed of that because, as you said, an officer was here a couple
14:43weeks ago and he spoke about a particular trend when it comes to marketplace in an area
14:48just outside of Port-au-Prince in the Moval-Lavendale area that he, I'm quoting him, there's a kind
14:56of activity or organized type of activity where people are looted at the area and, of
15:02course, robbed, money stolen, all their valuables taken from them.
15:07So please be wary of this and be careful.
15:11We're going to take a short break and we'll be back.
15:13Stay with us.
15:26I'm Suzette Martin, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Investigations.
15:34I come before you today with a deep sense of pride for our country and with great hope
15:40for the new year.
15:422024 has been a year of challenges, but also one with incredible resilience and unity.

16:24our nation safer, stronger and more united.

16:35a new year filled with peace, prosperity and goodwill.
16:39Stay safe, stay strong and together we will continue to create a better tomorrow.

18:38Welcome everyone to a truly joyous edition of Caribbean Passport.
18:43It's all next on CCN TV6, Sunday at 7.30 p.m.
19:01Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
19:02I'm your host Marc Besant, joined today by Acting Sergeant Quenich from the Northern
19:08Division of the Community Oriented Policing Section.
19:12I'll get right before the program starts.
19:16So, you know, I'll be talking about choppers, people congregating in areas across Trinidad
19:23and Tobago, and of course, we also speak about the traffic situation.
19:27And it's also an opportunity for the police officers, with the assistance of licensing
19:34officers also, who have been conducting various exercises across the country.
19:38No different, motorists who were traversing this area this morning in the port of Spain,
19:44coming, leaving the capital and coming in, they were met with heavy police and licensing
19:52officer presence along, near the Riverside Plaza area.
19:58And apparently, they were of course looking for anything illegal.
20:03But it would be firearms and drugs.
20:05I understand it was spearheaded by Senior Superintendent Dave Spence from the IATF.
20:11And you see licensing officers also in the mix there.
20:16They also were, they also apparently looking for people with illegal tint.
20:23And, you know, permits that were expired, or as well, disqualified permits.
20:30And my understanding, during the exercise, although they did not find anything illegal,
20:35they did ticket a few people for illegal tint.
20:39And also, some people were found with disqualified permits.
20:44And I'm sure you would want to clarify the difference between expired permits and disqualified
20:48permits to the public.
20:49Right.
20:50So an expired permit is simply, as the name suggests, you issue that permit, and it is
20:58being utilized beyond the expiry dates.
21:00Right.
21:01When you're disqualified from having a permit, I mean, the court would have ordered that
21:05you do not be permitted to drive on the nation's road, which tends to be an even more serious
21:09offense.
21:10We are asking our residents, our citizens as well, Mark, sometimes we have to sacrifice
21:16our convenience for our safety.
21:19Right.
21:20And a classic example, again, is what happened with the stealing of the phone.
21:25Right.
21:27We have to face the little convenience of our officers being on the roadways, doing
21:31two things, detecting offenses, and acting as a deterrent for persons who may be wanting
21:36to enter Port of Spain with the intent to engage in nefarious activities.
21:40Yes.
21:41Right.
21:42So we are asking them to bear with us, and we are seeing the rewards in terms of people
21:48being able to shop comfortably within the Port of Spain shopping area, and other hubs
21:53such as San Fernando and so on.
21:55As you said, people have a tendency, when they hear of a roadblock, to send out a message
22:00on WhatsApp saying, hey, if you have a roadblock, avoid X, Y, and Z.
22:04But sometimes they defeat the purpose when you do such, because God forbid that there
22:09might be a criminal that gets through that roadblock and harms somebody that you know.
22:14Your relative or someone.
22:15Yes.
22:16I'm just saying, I don't wish that on anybody, of course.
22:18So we are asking our citizens to let good sense prevail.
22:21Right.
22:23One of the intentions with these exercises, of course, is to detect offenses.
22:27And if they are to be forewarned, it's to be forearmed.
22:32And if they are forearmed, of course, we will lose the edge of the arm.
22:36The surprise.
22:37The element of surprise.
22:38Yes.
22:39Exactly.
22:40And we want to remind you of the numbers to call 623-1711 extensions 1992, 1993, 1996,
22:47and 1997.
22:50And a more positive, upbeat note, of course, we have, you want to share some beautiful
22:55images with us.
22:57Yes.
22:58Referencing the communities, the children.
23:00Right.
23:01So what we presented was actually our year in review.
23:04Right.
23:05Most of the activities that Northern Community Note would have, we set certain objectives
23:12for 2024 under the supervision, of course, of presently Superintendent Ram Samaru, Senior
23:19Superintendent Maynard Wilson, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Rishi Singh.
23:26Right.
23:27And we started the year with these objectives.
23:30One, decrease incidents of school violence within the division.
23:34And that was met.
23:36Right.
23:38Two, foster public trust and confidence in the TTPS through several engagements.
23:42That too was met.
23:43In fact, it was the first year in which we had principals actually attending our dinners
23:47and so on.
23:48This is indicating the relationship we started to have and the trust they have in us now
23:53in terms of being key components in the reduction of crime in the communities.
23:58Right.
23:59Acquire at least one additional clubhouse.
24:01In Northern Note, we were able to acquire two.
24:05We want to thank the Commissioner of Police for assisting us with acquiring a home for
24:09the Brazzers and Rafael Police Club, which is led by WPC Jocelyn, and a home for the
24:15Twin City Dinsley Police Club, which is presently housed at the Old Fire River Secondary School,
24:20and of course is led by WPC Ross.
24:22Right.
24:23So we are seeing the value of what we do in community policing and the impact it is having
24:28on the division as a whole.
24:30Right.
24:31And finally, we set out to do at least two-septed crime prevention through environmental design
24:36projects, and that too was accomplished.
24:39So it was an excellent year for community policing in Northern Division Note.
24:43Right.
24:44I do believe we have a call on the line.
24:46Caller, good evening.
24:48Pleasant good evening, pleasant good evening, sir.
24:51Officer, also pleasant good evening.
24:53Good afternoon.
24:54I want to ask a question, please.
24:57Now, I know you always come upon beyond the tapes.
25:01You always come upon Synergy TV with Step Up.
25:04Now, what I want to find out is that you all will come up and you all will...
25:08I will say...
25:09Hello?
25:10Yes, we're listening.
25:11Go ahead.
25:12Yeah.
25:13I want to say that you all just kind of bricks the officers.
25:15When I say bricks the officers, they are officers who just be doing a lot of nonsense outside,
25:20like spray-painting.
25:21This week, one day, I saw in Balmain, a business place.
25:26I didn't call any business place, where they had nowhere to pack up.
25:30And the police were coming down.
25:31And if you hear what the police are saying, curse the driver.
25:34And I started telling the driver, I wasn't driving.
25:37He said, you must have slept.
25:39Put on that swanshore phone.
25:41I said, I'm sorry, sorry, sorry.
25:42But my major problem is this, you know, officer.
25:45About three weeks ago, a guy hit my vehicle in the Cuba area.
25:49And he fell off with this thing.
25:51I happened to chase him, and he went into a barn in Cyprus.
25:55He started to get on here, wanted to show me the insurance.
25:58He said he had all the police records.
26:00Now, I went to the Cuba station, where he said, let me go.
26:03And he headed down to the pre-court side.
26:06Now, what you want me to believe?
26:08When I first hit your vehicle, I said, well, OK.
26:10He ran down to the police.
26:13And he don't care about nobody.
26:16When I went down to give them the report, the RTA, the policeman telling me, he said,
26:20you know what?
26:21I'm taking your information.
26:22I'm doing out everything.
26:24But I ain't no the man.
26:26But how you want me to think when somebody say, he had all the police records.
26:30And they do this kind of thing.
26:32And up until now, nobody had contacted me.
26:34I'm going to stand up here.
26:35But as I say, you always going to break the officer down.
26:38And they just be doing nonsense outside.
26:40Anyway, I will stand up here.
26:44All right, Cole.
26:45It's unfortunate that you feel that way.
26:47And I empathize with the situation you would have gone through.
26:52However, I would advise you in the future that if you are facing challenges where you
26:57believe that you have been unfairly or unprofessionally treated by the Chanda Bego police officers
27:02or its representatives, you request the number and name of the officer so that there would
27:08be some level of redress.
27:11We do not break city officers.
27:13I think the Chanda Bego police service more than anywhere else try to highlight our challenges
27:21more than any other institution.
27:24All right.
27:25And if you have any images, any videos that you would like to share with us, you can send
27:30it to beyondthetape1 at gmail.com.
27:34Okay, Cole.
27:35We're not breaking for anybody.
27:36No, we're not.
27:37If they are breaking the law, whether it be a police officer or a citizen, we will ensure
27:42that it is highlighted in the best way possible.
27:45And addressed.
27:46And addressed, of course.
27:47All right.
27:48We're going to take a short break.
27:49And we'll be back.
27:51Media 25 provides us a new start, a new year, that we can fix what is unfixed.
27:58We can continue to work with the things that are working, that are functioning.
28:03And we continue to embrace all organizations.
28:06Because only through a collective effort will we be able to effectively fight a crime.
28:11It cannot be just one or two individuals, but it must be a collective effort.
28:17The role of the media is absolutely imperative as they push, promote, and market some of
28:22the absolutely wonderful work as we seek to reduce, ensure that the negative news are
28:28not being promoted and marketed so we can save our children and we continue to make
28:33them to be good and beautiful citizens.
28:36Putting good first is also paramount to ensure that our country can come back to the love
28:41and the care we once had.
28:44Merry Christmas.
28:45Blessings for 2025.

31:10Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
31:20I'm your host Marc Bessin.
31:21I'm joined today by Acting Sgt. Greenidge
31:23from the Northern Division of the Community Oriented Policing Section.
31:27And, you know, we were talking about, you know,
31:30a number of traffic offenses.
31:33And this, in itself, this video that we're about to show you here,
31:37shows, you know, somebody clearly has some kind of grouse
31:40with the gentleman walking along the street here.
31:44This supposedly happened in the Matarita area a few days ago.
31:50You're seeing the pedestrian walking along the pavement there.
31:54Car is following very slowly.
32:00And then he's struck.
32:02And the vehicle continues on its merry way.
32:06It comes up again.
32:10Marc, I may be a bit speculative,
32:12but based on what we've seen, it appears to be intentional.
32:15And it appears to be a deliberate act.
32:18Maybe the gentleman slowed down and then...
32:21But of course, you know, to be the subject of an inquiry by the TTPS presently.
32:26So that's not prejudice.
32:28We're inventing the talking too much about it at this time.
32:31We're hopeful that the individual, the pedestrian in this case,
32:36is alive.
32:37We're not too certain of what transpired,
32:39or what might have prompted the action of the motorist.
32:42Even, as I said, we only...
32:45What we see there is what we know.
32:48We don't know what was the prelude to that in any measure.
32:52I'm certain my good friends in the Arima CID,
32:56Sergeant Haynes and others, are on the ball
32:59and will ensure that justice is served in the Matar.
33:03Yeah, for sure.
33:04As you said, the vehicle slows down a bit.
33:07You see the man, so it's like a calculated...
33:09Yeah, it appears to be that way.
33:11I don't know if he was told...
33:13Somebody called him and told him somebody's wearing something.
33:16All the facts will come out in the inquiry.
33:18Yeah.
33:19And as I said, Sergeant Haynes does an excellent job
33:22with his team of detectives there, so I'm very confident.
33:25All right.
33:26I think we have another call on the line.
33:28Caller, good evening.
33:31Yeah.
33:37So I like justice, I like chance.
33:40Now, when officers have their roadblocks, right?
33:43Whenever they have their roadblocks,
33:45on the 18th, they must have their censor on them.
33:52Check by the door glasses,
33:55the percentage of whatever might come out there.
33:58You can't give people tickets
34:01if you don't have that meter.
34:03You need that meter and then ticket me.
34:06If my status is too dark, I have no problem giving me a ticket.
34:09But if you don't have no meter,
34:11you cannot give nobody a ticket.
34:13And the magistrate is supposed to throw out all them cases.
34:16Now, the other thing is,
34:18I have really hard to expose people already, boy.
34:20These kidnappers are them, right?
34:22I'm following the story really closely.
34:24These kidnappers have no heart.
34:26They don't show everyone.
34:28You can't leave a child, boy.
34:30You cannot leave a child in the forest.
34:33Snakes and alligators and all these things.
34:35They are heartless.
34:37Give them medicine.
34:39Put them in the forest
34:41and let them spend a few nights.
34:43No food and water.
34:45Yes, caller.
34:47So if one is aggrieved,
34:49any traffic offense,
34:51any offense for that matter,
34:53and you believe that you were given a ticket unfairly,
34:57or unjustly,
34:59you can, of course, ensure that you attend court
35:02and allow your voice to be heard
35:04and your side of the story to be told
35:07in the proper administration of justice.
35:13We don't always get it right.
35:15I'm speaking from a serviceman's point of view,
35:18not just the police service, but licensing and so on.
35:21And, of course, the court is there for you to seek.
35:26Justice, as you rightfully put it earlier.
35:29I do recall that the transport commissioner,
35:33Mr. Clive Clark,
35:35when they were ruling out this whole exercise
35:38with tint and so on,
35:40I think one of the prerequisites, of course,
35:43was that the licensing officers
35:45will have those meters available
35:47to be checking your tint.
35:51And I don't think, as the caller rightly pointed out,
35:54that you can give me a ticket
35:56based on what you think is dark tint.
35:59Again, of course, we focus on
36:01evidential procedures in terms of everything we do.
36:04Anything that goes to the court,
36:06there ought to be enough evidence
36:08to satisfy the court that the offense did, in fact, occur.
36:11So, in the absence of that,
36:13he is free to go and have his day in court.
36:16Yeah, because I remember a couple of weeks ago,
36:19a guy had dark tint,
36:22and he claimed he had an exemption,
36:24so they said, well, present the exemption.
36:27And they made some calls,
36:29and they realized that the exemption was a fraud.
36:32Fraudulent, even that.
36:34So, the more we do it, the more challenging the job comes,
36:37because, you know, we, as Trinidadians,
36:40we are very creative.
36:42So, there's always a challenge of fraud and so on.
36:46Of course, that by itself is an offense.
36:50It's an offense, and I'm certain
36:52that the culprit would have been
36:54slapped with additional charges,
36:56as far as I'm concerned.
36:58But, obviously, unless, you know,
37:00if you print a document, it looks like,
37:02obviously, if it's not part of
37:04being in the computerized system,
37:06then you will obviously be caught.
37:08Correct, and you will face charges for the offense.
37:10Yeah, as you said,
37:12altering a forged document
37:14is one of those charges that you can be faced with.
37:16So, I am saying to you as motorists out there,
37:18you know, if you believe
37:20that you are entitled to an exemption,
37:23you go online,
37:25according to the transport commissioner,
37:27you make your case out,
37:29whether it be something medically inclined,
37:31whether it be something in terms of security,
37:34you can make a case,
37:36and then, based on that,
37:38they will judge on the merit of that case,
37:40say whether or not
37:42you are entitled
37:44to an exemption.
37:47Alright, so we're going to take a short break
37:49and we'll be back after this.
37:51Stay with us.
38:17Set the AC to a moderate temperature
38:19and we could use the fans

39:54You'll be out of Ovule High before you can pronounce
39:56the word scholarship.
39:58We have a mystery to solve.
40:00The only way
40:02we can make a difference is if we stick together.
40:04When I'm head prefect,
40:06each and every student
40:08will have a voice.
40:10We need to show that news quick, Ovule High.
40:13I hate this school!
40:27Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
40:29I'm your host, Mark Bassan,
40:31joined today by Acting Sgt. Greenwich
40:33from the Northern Division
40:35of the Community Oriented Policing Section.
40:37Correct. Well done.
40:39Yes, and I know you have been doing
40:42some good work there.
40:44You have some images, of course,
40:46to share with us
40:48in terms of the interaction
40:50with the youths in that area
40:52over the last few months.
40:54Basically, what we try to do,
40:56of course, is to give
40:58a synopsis of our entire year.
41:00As I said before,
41:02one of the targets
41:04was, in fact, to reduce
41:06incidents of school violence.
41:08We did so two-fold
41:10in terms of discipline
41:12where some of the students
41:14who were on suspension
41:16were not permitted to stay home
41:18under suspensions.
41:20They were sent to police club houses
41:22where the purpose for which
41:24they were suspended
41:26was highlighted and addressed.
41:28We had engagements within the schools
41:30in terms of edifying and educating
41:32and sensitizing children
41:34and bullying and other topics
41:36where the issue of bullying
41:39where we saw even a child
41:41succumbing to it fatally.
41:43We used all these avenues
41:45in which to ensure
41:47that we engaged the youths
41:49and we were very successful
41:51in our endeavor to reduce
41:53incidents of school violence.
41:55We also utilized it
41:57as an avenue in which
41:59to engage
42:01the public, thereby fostering
42:03public trust and
42:05confidence in the police service.
42:08It is an uphill battle
42:10and a battle that we are relentless
42:12and we would not give up
42:14until, of course, that relationship
42:16between the public and the police
42:18is fully mended.
42:20In the school, we would have done
42:22some career fairs.
42:24As I said, we lectured on bullying
42:26and sensitizing them in terms of
42:28some of the things that we call
42:30bullying are, in fact, offenses.
42:32The mantra this year was
42:34be a buddy and not a bully.
42:37We are focusing on the youth
42:39and really changing mindset.
42:41We find that it will be quite
42:43impactful in terms of the crime
42:45situation within time.
42:47I wanted to ask you,
42:49I know you said that
42:51a number of the children
42:53you spoke about, some of them
42:55were students that were suspended
42:57from various schools
42:59for one reason or the other.
43:01Can you say
43:03how that program
43:05impacted the lives of these students
43:07and when they returned to school,
43:09if you have some of them at least,
43:11was it in a
43:13positive way where they would have
43:15changed their whole outlook
43:17and behavior and so on?
43:19Yes.
43:21I would say that
43:23if I was to give a percentage,
43:2595% of the children
43:27who returned to the schools
43:29were different children,
43:31different young people.
43:34Because of the fact that we also
43:36patrol, our unit does a patrol
43:38from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
43:40where we push them off to school
43:42and in the afternoon from 2 a.m.
43:44to 5 a.m.
43:46where we push them off to their
43:48respective homes.
43:50We are now seeing that when it
43:52comes to us as police officers,
43:54it's not a quote-unquote ranking
43:56thing.
43:58It's us being concerned about
44:00their well-being and so on.
44:03We're in a rima,
44:05look for fight and so on.
44:07Airing in the air and all these things.
44:09They now see us as
44:11a big brother or a parent
44:13figure and they tend to straighten
44:15up now and say, seriously, you're trying.
44:17So we no longer take any
44:19hard and fast approach all the
44:21time unless absolutely necessary.
44:23But that constant engagement,
44:25building relationships,
44:27one positively impacted our
44:29relationship with the students in the school
44:31and assisted in, of course,
44:33building positive and productive
44:35relationships between us
44:37and the educators, the principals,
44:39the teachers in the school.
44:41And you threw me back to my days.
44:43I remember in our days, at least,
44:45you could go down the road and hang out
44:47and chill out in your school uniform.
44:49San Fernando, La Pique.
44:51La Pique.
44:53Over by the convent,
44:55on the promenade.
44:57Airing in my ears.
45:00And they see the police straighten up.
45:02It became more, I guess, as time
45:04progressed, more severe,
45:06things were happening.
45:08Generation changed, the society changed
45:10and some of the younger
45:12children at that time
45:14started to move in a different
45:16direction, so to speak.
45:18So we're trying to bring it back a bit.
45:20Of course, using the approach,
45:22the proactive approach.
45:24We're not waiting for the fights to start
45:26and then to run out there.
45:29I have seen a young lady,
45:31I'll call her name Kayla,
45:33let's call her first name.
45:35She was a real fighter,
45:37attending a school in East.
45:39And I attended a PTA meeting,
45:41teachers were amazed that
45:43there were children who were actually
45:45provoking her to fight now.
45:47And she said, if I fight, she'll be
45:49disappointed in me.
45:51So she refused to fight.
45:53We're very proud of, again,
45:55the progress we have made.
45:57So we're trying to identify and
45:59ensure that, you know, at least
46:01within the perimeters of the
46:03school and the communities,
46:05there's a sense of safety.
46:07Yeah, and I want to obviously
46:09congratulate you and your team
46:11for that kind of, you know,
46:13involvement where you could
46:15actually, somebody could,
46:17their whole mindset changes and
46:19the bully now becomes somebody
46:21that is thoughtful in terms of
46:23going into the school now and
46:26making use of any sort, or even
46:28cyber bullying.
46:30Correct.
46:32So we're teaching them to manage
46:34conflict positively.
46:36Yeah, and it has been bearing
46:38fruit.
46:40And I know with Christmas coming
46:42up, I know you have a lot of
46:44gifts to buy for your, not only
46:46for your children, but for your
46:48extended children.
46:50How is that going?
46:52Which is a lot.
46:55We want to thank the management
46:57there for assisting us.
46:59What time is this at?
47:01It's from 5 p.m., where, of
47:03course, we acknowledge and
47:05appreciate all the members and
47:07those who would have excelled.
47:09It was an excellent day for the
47:11club.
47:12The netballers would have gone
47:14to Florida this year.
47:15It was a challenge, but they got
47:17there.
47:18Every competition, the
47:19footballers would have entered.
47:21They would have brought home some
47:23comment.
47:25Coach Perry, Constable Jamil
47:27Perry, police officer, for the
47:29excellent job he would have done
47:31with the footballers this year.
47:33We are reintroducing netball
47:35next year, and we use these
47:37things, of course, as a pull
47:39factor to attract them.
47:41And we, of course, get some
47:43mentorship and reconditioning of
47:45minds.
47:46I believe anything associated
47:48with sports is a really good way
47:50for children, some children, to
47:53learn.
47:54It's a universal language.
47:56Exactly.
47:57As we go on, as you see these
47:59things progressing, I know you're
48:01certainly very proud because you
48:03would have touched the lives of
48:05many children who would have
48:07passed through those youth clubs.
48:09What's one of the messages that
48:11would have resonated with you as
48:13an individual constantly
48:15interacting with these children?
48:17To me personally, as a society,
48:19we are quick to condemn the
48:22children who we feel have
48:24behavioral issues.
48:25Right?
48:26A child bad, we like to use that
48:28too.
48:29Right?
48:30Sometimes...
48:31I was a bad child.
48:32Believe it or not.
48:33Right?
48:34And sometimes all these children
48:36really needed somebody to give
48:38them a chance and to focus on the
48:40underlying issues.
48:41Right?
48:42There are a lot of causes as to
48:44why children express deviant
48:46behaviors, and I think we have
48:48gone past just condemning and
48:50ridiculing and we should really
48:52take time to focus on one, root
48:54cause, two, how we could
48:56recondition their mindset.
48:58Right?
48:59And we have been very shrewd.
49:01I must say that every single
49:03officer presently attached to the
49:05community or in the policing
49:07section, believe it or not, is
49:09dedicated and committed to the
49:11cause.
49:12Right?
49:13Some of them give out of their
49:15hearts, out of their pockets to
49:17ensure that these children are
49:19taken care of.
49:20Right?
49:21And you talk about being a bad
49:23child, and I can say, you know,
49:25going to college, I was a little
49:27bit delinquent.
49:28What school was that?
49:29Annapurna College.
49:30A lot of my colleagues in form
49:32four and five who were there with
49:34me, 4P and 5P, could also attest
49:36to that where they actually had a
49:38special parents day for us where
49:40they said to them, if they get
49:42three subjects, they're lucky.
49:43I mean, and just we wouldn't like
49:45that kind of violence and so on,
49:47but, you know, we play pranks, we
49:48play games, you know, those kind
49:50of things.
49:51So I don't know, you know,
49:53looking back on that, you smile,
49:55but at the end of the day, you
49:57had role models that would have
49:59guided you in a particular path.
50:01Yes, positive parents, teachers,
50:03counselors, and other persons in
50:05your life that would set you on
50:07the right path, and you set
50:09yourself on that path, and you
50:11move forward in a very positive
50:13direction.
50:14John Steadman was one of the more
50:16serious deans, right, and we have
50:18seen, as adults, we are very
50:20appreciated for all the strokes

53:18Welcome back to Beyond the Tape.
53:20I'm your host, Marc Bessant,
53:21joined today by Acting Sergeant
53:23Greenidge from the Northern
53:24Division of the Community
53:25Oriented Policing Section to the
53:27right.
53:28Beautiful.
53:29Right?
53:30And, you know, we just have a
53:31couple more minutes left, and we
53:33just want to give you that
53:34platform.
53:35Any wishes that you have going
53:37into the new year?
53:38Okay.
53:39First of all, we want to say
53:40thank you.
53:41We're very thankful, too.
53:42Our friends at RHL, Lana Gissipi,
53:44Kessa Davis, Ms. Swan, I can't
53:47remember her last name.
53:49Of course, we want to wish the
53:52entire Community Oriented
53:54Policing Section, Northern
53:55Division, North, Trans-Urban
53:57Police Service, a Merry
53:59Christmas and a safe and
54:03productive season.
54:05We're asking persons, even
54:07though it's a period of
54:08merriment, let us be safe and
54:10vigilant on the roadways.
54:12We want to get home.
54:14And, of course, let's not ever,
54:16ever forget the reason for the
54:18season.
54:19Yeah?
54:20What's your one major wish for
54:232025?
54:24That we somehow do better in
54:27terms of the homicides.
54:30I think other than that, we had
54:32a very good year in trying to
54:33make a police service for the
54:34homicides, right?
54:35So, of course, we've not given
54:37up, as I said before.
54:38But we're really hoping that we
54:40do much better 2025, by the
54:42grace of God.
54:43Certainly.
54:44And I want to echo some of your
54:45sentiments, of course.
54:46This is the last show for 2024
54:49beyond the tape.
54:50And we're going to be back on
54:52January 6th.
54:53But, of course, none of this is
54:55possible with a really
54:57magnificent producer, Jackie,
54:59and the team behind her.
55:01We really want to thank you for
55:04the entire year of your hard
55:06work and dedication to this
55:08program.
55:09And I believe in 2025, it will
55:11go from strength to strength
55:13with a great producer like
55:14Jackie and a great team behind
55:16her.
55:17And I know we always have to
55:18rely on her.
55:19She's always in my ear, speaking
55:21to me.
55:22And I want to wish you and the
55:24Beyond the Tape family a very
55:26merry Christmas and a bright and
55:28prosperous 2025, as well as to
55:30my TV6 and Express crew.
55:33I know there's a function
55:35happening now.
55:36Please save me some food.
55:39I am begging.
55:40Save me some food.
55:41I will be there shortly.
55:43And, you know, I just wanted to
55:46wish a very special person a
55:49happy birthday.
55:51Happy birthday to Jessie today.
55:53I want to wish you from all my
55:55heart a very happy birthday.
55:57And I wish you many more.
55:59And I hope that your charisma
56:01continues to, you know, be
56:04shared across the world.
56:06She touched so many lives.
56:08She's a very special person.
56:10She is indeed.
56:11All right.
56:12So, you know, we have like a
56:14minute left.
56:15Anything you want to say?
56:17Yes.
56:18My family, we could not have
56:21gotten through the year without
56:23your dedication, your hard work,
56:25your support.
56:26I know at times I'm quite
56:28difficult to deal with.
56:29And I'm proud of all that we
56:31have accomplished.
56:32Again, superintendent, who is
56:34presently steering the ship, I
56:36want to say thanks for all the
56:38support we have during the
56:40period.
56:41And of course, as I said, from
56:43the Trinidad and Tobago police
56:45perspective, we will be doing
56:47trying our best to be even much
56:49better in 2025.
56:50All right.
56:54All right.
56:55So, we're going to wish you a
56:57merry Christmas and a happy new
56:59year.
57:00We're going to be back here on
57:02January 6th, of course.
57:03Remember, repeat tonight at
57:051130.
57:06No repeat tomorrow.
57:07Guess what?
57:08The TV6 News is up next.
