00:00 having dealt with dr. electron he now wants death to the man of steel
00:04 here's a look at the McFarlane toys DC multiverse the gold label collection
00:07 atomic skull versus Superman
00:12 while on an experimental star lab submarine scientist Joseph Martin was
00:40 exposed to nuclear energy shipwrecked on a desert island he survived by releasing
00:44 deadly nuclear blasts from his mouth his skin his muscles literally peeled off
00:48 his face inspiring him to create the supervillain for higher persona atomic
00:52 skull he regularly clashed with Superman both alone and with criminals such as
00:56 major disaster and the royal flesh gang in recent times Martin reformed fighting
01:01 criminals with the Metropolis special crimes unit superwoman and the Teen
01:05 Titans as Martin's tried a place where he left this face let's grab the tape
01:09 measure measure both the Superman and the atomic skull as part of this set
01:12 Superman is a reuse of the original action comic Superman though does the
01:16 colors a little bit more classic atomic skull is more the unique figure although
01:20 he is using some of the elements from the armored suit Lex Luthor I'll bring
01:24 him in in a second first though that back to Superman the figure stands at
01:28 almost 7 inches he's actually about 6 and 3/4 of an inch in height or the
01:32 figures about 17 centimeters tall being the fact that he does have the flame
01:35 gives him a little higher reach than Superman and atomic skull is actually
01:39 close to being about seven and a half inches in height or 19 centimeters tall
01:43 speaking of Superman bringing now in the original action comics version of Superman
01:47 who approached the colors and the mold a little bit darker whereas we get the
01:50 more classic colors that get packed along with atomic skull the original
01:53 approach the Superman using this mold had the colors of the blue and the red
01:57 much darker notably as well the Superman emblem on the front of his chest had
02:00 also a metallic red finish as opposed to the one that we get here with atomic
02:04 skull matches the colors more to his trunks and his lower boots we also did
02:08 get this one this version of Superman also as well use the same mold again
02:11 although with this one it actually uses a more angrier expression I believe this
02:15 Superman got packed along with another figure as for atomic skull while some of
02:19 it is new mold the figure though still uses some of the component pieces that
02:24 made up the original armored suit Lex Luthor ironically enough though it's not
02:28 necessarily the torso which you would imagine would have been the same thing
02:31 that they would have used rather it's actually his arms and his lower legs the
02:36 fact that they are packing again action comics 1000 Superman you would also
02:40 probably imagine that they're gonna be using the same trading card yes and no
02:43 what do you mean yes and no when it be yes or no yes and no in the sense that
02:47 they're actually using the same image but what they're done doing differently
02:51 though is if you look at the original action comics card that came clear with
02:54 that Superman it's a farther away shots whereas this one actually zooms the same
02:58 image in so it is a yes and no in the sense that they are using the same image
03:03 but this one just is zoomed in a little bit more something also that they omit
03:06 is that the original card listed as action comics 1000 as the source
03:10 material this one only just gives you a general idea that it's from action
03:13 comics but doesn't tell you actually the issue in which this image is taken from
03:17 so again like it's the same card but it's just slightly different from one
03:21 another you may notice also as well that I got myself two of these reasons
03:25 unknown when I first was removing the cards from inside the cardboard I
03:28 realized that I got two of the exact same card I'm sure that's not
03:32 intentional on everybody's on the back though of the card you'll notice one
03:35 thing that also has changed they zoom in to the image of Superman so you're only
03:39 just seeing his face this one showed a little bit of the Superman emblem and
03:42 again omitting that it's action comics 1000 telling us it's only from action
03:47 comics something that they also have done away with is providing both the
03:50 height and the way to character which I don't miss I don't think it necessarily
03:54 needs it I think if anything it needs a real name and probably the source
03:58 material height and weight could be something that does vary from comic to
04:01 comic Superman doesn't always look the same in every single comic you could
04:05 make the argument that in action comics 1000 that's where they based his height
04:08 in his weight from I don't think necessarily it needs it what they also
04:11 have done also is that they've increased the size of the font and you don't get
04:15 as much to read this the original one had a lot more to read you get a lot
04:18 less of it but it's easier to see especially if you have old eyes like
04:22 myself so it is not quite the same card but they're definitely using the same
04:26 idea move those to the side the figure also as well both figures come also
04:30 include with an atomic skull card the fact that this is the first atomic skull
04:34 also means just by that it's also the first atomic skull trading card that we
04:38 get featured on the front is a really nice image of atomic skull featured on
04:42 the back though his real name is Joseph Martin not necessarily a first
04:45 appearance is listed but they give you at least an idea a character breakdown
04:49 of what atomic skulls origin would be I still wish that they could have added
04:53 the first appearance issue but the fact that DC is always relaunching itself
04:58 what would have been the original appearance before would have now just
05:01 been changed and years later the first appearance would have been like from
05:04 something recent instead nice-looking trading card though it's gonna go with
05:07 the rest of my trading cards in my sheets let's move those off to the side
05:10 the figures also as well come stacked on top of one another the exact same
05:14 display stand same in the sense that they have the DC logo printed down below
05:18 same and also the sense that they also have the pegs on the top that can plug
05:21 into either one of the figures feats I would rely more on these than the next
05:25 thing that we're gonna have a look at I want to bring to your attention the fact
05:28 that the figures come include with a diorama scene the scene does have pegs
05:32 there's a peg here well there are some of the pegs there's one there's two
05:34 there's one over here also as well the idea usually with these is the fact that
05:38 you can have both figures displayed on top of them good luck trying to pull
05:41 that off well it does look good from a using translucent purple perspective
05:45 what I don't understand though is that it detaches not that I broke it but you
05:50 can see there's a peg in a peg that line up then with the holes on either side
05:53 my only real guess is that they made it separable like this so that you'd be
05:57 able to get in there and actually attach the figures feet properly if this was
06:00 all one piece there would also be some concerns I would imagine trying to take
06:04 this out of the mold if you actually look at it it consists of three parts
06:08 not just the two we take this one off this one actually does attach as well
06:11 but it doesn't come off at all I'm not even gonna try to fight it either for
06:15 the risk that it may break some of this purple plastic so yeah again like it's
06:18 it's a bit of a busy display stand it makes no sense really whatsoever and
06:22 again let's just get everything lined back up this is always something that
06:25 falls off frequently and the moment it also falls off let me just take it off
06:29 right now for a second it also just off kilters of the display stand so if you
06:32 try to put your figures on top of it which again has the peg right there and
06:36 a peg right over here and here try to attach those figures as you probably
06:40 saw at the beginning of this review while these poor characters are rotating
06:43 on a turntable this thing was wobbling around I just wish that this was all one
06:47 piece I certainly wish though that they didn't make it so complicated the way
06:50 they did and just give us maybe just a simply flat display stand some flame
06:55 effects around it I just don't think I'll ever really display this with
06:59 either atomic skull or Superman for that matter off to the side the figure also
07:03 comes included with dedicated hands for both of them dedicated for Superman the
07:07 figures come include with more relaxed hands if you wanted to put them in a
07:10 flight pose the original action comics Superman I believe did come in clue with
07:14 an action flight stand the new Superman of course the one gets packed along with
07:17 atomic skull does not yet still the flight hands you just need yourself a
07:21 flight stand if you want to have to figure airborne instead the hands
07:24 themselves can be swapped out as he has right now he only has a closed fist and
07:29 he also has himself a gripping hand but the changing of the hands is pretty
07:32 pretty easy I mean you're just gonna pop this off the only thing unfortunately
07:35 about this as as easy as it is as easy as it was for me to say that the same
07:40 Superman had the exact same problem is that these pegs normally would be easy
07:45 just to simply remove them just attach them off like this but my original
07:49 Superman had the same issue if you've had this figure you can also let me know
07:52 if you've had a similar issue this Superman is always prone I've noticed
07:56 with these pegs detaching from one another you literally saw at the
07:59 beginning well you saw it as I was trying to change the hands out you go to
08:02 pop it what ends up happening is you remove the top half from the bottom half
08:05 and then you have to sandwich them back together anyways let's get his flight
08:09 hand back in place there we go again it always seemed to happen with this
08:13 particular Superman let me know again if you've had similar issues I guess before
08:18 of course we look at atomic skull maybe we'll get down to the details of this
08:20 particular Superman you know it's not until you get a chance to go back to
08:24 some of these earlier figures that McFarlane and his team have produced that
08:27 you really realize how good they were and how good we had it with some of
08:30 these earlier releases I miss how good this Superman actually is I already knew
08:35 how good the Superman was because it's one of the ones that predominantly get
08:38 featured on my shelf but now seeing it with a slightly different color of
08:42 plastic I get a chance now to kind of appreciate even more now than maybe I
08:45 did before one thing I really will say is the improvements is not only on the
08:49 plastic but also as well the way they painted the face the original face was a
08:53 little bit more muted a little bit more muddier and you didn't get this chance
08:56 as much to see the finer features like his face like his eyes for example which
09:00 I think you get a chance now to see much more better much more better much better
09:04 on the one that get packed along with atomic skull the head sculpt is stunning
09:08 still again is one of the best Superman figures we've had and it again only took
09:12 a bit of a break away from this figure to go back to it now to realize I don't
09:16 think there's still a Superman that tops this one I know in the reviews I've done
09:20 of other Superman figures from DC multiverse I say okay this is the best
09:23 Superman this is the best Superman but you know again like to go back to the
09:26 original one maybe it was the fact it just needed some color corrections the
09:30 original Superman was fine but just the fact that they've now painted the face
09:33 as well as they have and maybe done away with the one thing I wasn't so much
09:36 crazy about with the metallic red emblem doing away with that changing those two
09:41 few things that they did gives us I feel just a fantastic looking Superman the
09:47 head sculpt again from all the sides looks more like a classic looking soup
09:49 so you even got the little Superman s curl there as well the face I do think
09:53 looks much nicer with the lighter fair skin that they've given him not to
09:56 mention as well they've painted the sections for his cheekbones and I think
09:59 his eyes pop a lot nicer on this figure as well of course the colors on his skin
10:03 aren't the only thing that change that now Superman suits is actually a lighter
10:07 blue and again just to bring back in the original Superman much darker was the
10:11 blue that they've used the even like the trunks seem so faded now you get the
10:15 approach of doing it with a much more brighter color you know you could say
10:18 maybe if anything that the colors of the red are a little more closer to like a
10:22 reddish orange if anything I could say that that's the one thing I wish the
10:25 figure was done a little bit differently with the colors of his cape the colors
10:28 of his trunk and even like the colors of his boots I think of anything if they
10:32 could have matched the colors more closer to this because there's a little
10:34 bit more red here than there is on the actual cape the cape comes across a
10:38 little bit more like an orangey red it just need be a little bit darker than
10:42 what it was short of maybe just changing the cape color and changing maybe like
10:46 the the lower trunks perfect looking Superman unfortunately though it still
10:50 retains the one problem with the original action comic Superman is the
10:53 fact that Superman still continues to miss leg day he's quite muscular up at
10:57 the top here but like the original detective comics Batman that we looked
11:01 at from the what the first second wave I think it was the first wave of DC
11:04 multiverse figures they also had very very lean looking thighs Superman
11:09 carries that over as well if they had only just kept the proportions of this
11:12 figure down and just maybe made the legs a little bit thicker but I know again
11:16 they're only going to use the same mold at the original Superman but much better
11:19 colors I feel articulation on this guy is gonna be exactly the same as that
11:23 original Superman so the heads gonna rotate all the way around because of the
11:26 ball joint it also allows the head to look down quite low and quite high so if
11:30 you want to get this kind of flight pose you can easily pull that off the upper
11:33 torso is gonna be on a ball joint lower to that the abdomen area is also on a
11:37 ball joint the arms as always do come out at 90 degrees you can take the arms
11:42 and rotate them all the way around on both sides and you can also swivel back
11:45 and forth the figure does have a single hinge on the elbow it's one of those
11:50 days or back in the day when they were first doing DC multiverse figures
11:53 instead of actually giving them a double hinge what they do is sort of give them
11:55 like a gradual hinge so the range of hinge actually is a little bit further
12:00 but they don't do it instead of using a double hinge they only really have a
12:03 single hinge instead the hands again rotate all the way around the legs do
12:07 split once again relying on ratcheted joints on the insides of the thighs the
12:11 legs go forward and back swivel mildly at the top of the thigh the figure does
12:16 have a double hinge on the knee nice tight joints and all the things on the
12:18 figure he has are again the articulation back and forth up and down and again he
12:23 has the toe articulation also as well the only other thing I would say is not
12:26 loving the colors that they went with for the cape because I feel like it's
12:30 the one thing that pulls me away from loving this figure 100% is the color of
12:34 the trunks the color of the cape I think both of them are way too orange they
12:38 need to be a little bit darker than what they actually were overlooking that and
12:41 one other thing is that the fact the pegs that they use for the ankle
12:45 articulation it's much darker than the colors that all are around it if they
12:49 had only maybe made the colors a little bit more matching to the boots and
12:52 certainly if they color the cape a little bit darker of a red and the
12:55 trunks we get a home run hit for Superman here still though I think it's
12:58 a better looking Superman than we did get from the original action comics I
13:01 prefer the lighter classic colors myself but again like it's just one of those
13:05 cases I took a break away from the action comics Superman seeing the guy
13:09 again seeing this mold again makes me really appreciate how good we had it
13:13 with that original action comics release on to now though atomic skull atomic
13:19 skull does come in clues of interchangeable hands they're similar in
13:22 the sense that they are a closed fist and they're also sort of a more of a
13:25 gestured hand I believe as well Lex Luthor did have similar hands like this
13:29 as well now these serve more of a purpose as well for action for atomic
13:33 skull versus the action comics Superman getting that all tongue twisted because
13:38 almost dropped down the floor because this figure also has these effects that
13:42 are on the hand and the ends of his hands these aren't effects by the way
13:45 that can be removed with the hands they are part of the hands so he has sort of
13:49 this one kind of atomic blast effect that he has already molded to the hand
13:53 itself this is all done in translucent purple plastic he also has something
13:57 very similar on this side as well if you don't like this I mean I like it because
14:01 it goes along with the flames that he has on the back of his head but if
14:03 you're not as crazy about that again you just detach the hand let's hope the pegs
14:07 okay the pegs stayed stayed okay this time just attach that and then you can
14:11 just swap this out with just the regular hands saying regular hands and
14:14 describing that with atomic spells seems a little silly but and if you want to
14:18 swap those out and only have really one of them you can swap out both of them if
14:21 you want I think I'll just leave one for right now the head sculpt for atomic
14:25 skull some say a look a lot like Ghost Rider I certainly see that also as well
14:30 the head sculpt is really good on this one it's really hard to pull off
14:32 something that has flame effects when it's coming out from the back of a skull
14:35 I mean this is one of the problems that Ghost Rider has on a regular basis just
14:39 because like you don't know where to start the flame you want to have enough
14:43 at least that it doesn't start just destroying and ruining the sculpt of the
14:46 skull on the front I think there's just the right amount that you can see a
14:50 little bit start sort of starts on the sides of its face and I kind of get it
14:54 blows out the back there nice use of the purple translucent plastic again if we
14:58 were to bring in the armored suits Lex Luthor you can see like the back of it
15:02 the back is really the most where you can kind of see the exact same mold
15:05 getting carried over I mean I don't think looking at it other than really
15:09 just the boots and the gauntlets nothing else really has been done differently
15:12 between the two molds funny enough though Lex Luthor has this additional
15:16 rubbery piece where atomic skull certainly has that also as well that
15:21 that's the thing that makes them different from the front the abdomen
15:24 areas are the same the biceps and the forearms well the biceps and the
15:28 shoulders are the same you can see like the gauntlets are different between the
15:31 two forearms legs are going to be also the same now the thing about Lex Luthor
15:35 though is where it may look like they're differently molded pieces is that when
15:39 you look at the thighs the thighs do have some additional green atomic skull
15:42 literally is just using the same mold and just casting it instead and this
15:46 metallic purple plastic because of that it actually for a second looks like
15:49 they're using a different mold it's not the case at all funny though enough I
15:53 was just trying to think were they using this mold from something else I was
15:56 trying to look through the other DC multiverse figures even the ones I
15:58 haven't even reviewed I can't think of one if you do know of one let me know
16:02 down below in the comment section but then bringing back in the original Lex
16:05 Luthor I would love if they haven't already decided to do this use this mold
16:10 with the front of the torso looking like this and give us a more classic looking
16:14 Lex Luthor of course when it comes to the lower legs they're all basically
16:17 giving me the same the legs actually the lower legs are one thing also that gets
16:20 changed because now atomic skull also has these little orbs of white that the
16:25 original Lex Luthor body never possessed knees are also something that's
16:28 different too as well so it's basically like from the knees down are brand new
16:32 molds the forearms are different but all the rest of the mold except for the
16:35 front of the torso obviously are the exact same between the two figures
16:39 articulation on atomic skull is gonna be the exact same retained from Lex Luthor
16:43 so again his head rotates all the way around it looks down looks up and again
16:47 back and forth upper torso is gonna be on a bulge right lower abdomen is on a
16:51 bulge right the arms hinge out again at 90 degrees you can take those arms
16:54 normally normally I would have said you've been able to rotate them all the
16:57 way around but again like softer plastic still it's gonna be an issue you're not
17:01 gonna be able to rotate these as easily all the way around the figure does have
17:05 a swivel on the bicep double hinge on the elbow hands again rotate all the way
17:09 around atomic skulls legs once again do split similar to soups you can take the
17:13 legs and move forward move them back yeah yeah yeah all the same swivel at
17:16 the top of the thigh double hinge on the knee ankle articulation the same
17:20 retained as Lex Luthor and again get your toe articulation nice looking figure
17:24 the price of admission I think for some that would be looking to get this set is
17:28 probably the idea that this is the first and only time we've gotten ourselves a
17:31 comic skull I hope it's not the last some would just say well I'm more
17:35 interested in the atomic skull I'm really less interested in Superman
17:38 because hey we've already gotten the Superman before and I was that same
17:41 person I sort of was just buying the set more so first the idea of just getting
17:44 atomic skull but now realizing how much better of a Superman we actually do get
17:49 it's not perfect I will admit it like the colors of his trunks the colors of
17:53 his cape are way too orangey for me but it gives us a much more classic looking
17:57 Superman and it took a head sculpt that really was fine for its time and it just
18:02 jazzes it up with some appreciated paint atomic skull of course bringing back in
18:06 the original Lex Luthor yeah I'm surprised we haven't gotten this mold
18:10 because again maybe they're teasing I mean obviously this sets a little bit
18:14 more older it's a quite easy able to find now but I'm surprised that they
18:17 haven't used this mold for another Lex Luthor I mean obviously the original one
18:21 that we got was fine but if we want one maybe a little bit more closer to like
18:24 challenge of the super friends that's what I was thinking of at least I'd love
18:28 to see this mold get approached again for another updated release of Lex
18:31 Luthor what you may not be seeing here wrapping up the review of both Superman
18:36 and atomic skull is the included diorama display stand that came in clue with the
18:40 figures I do like the use of the translucent purple plastic I don't like
18:44 the messiness of the construction it's so difficult to get the figures attached
18:48 on to those pegs didn't even show you guys actually in the review but the
18:51 stand itself is also very wobbly and it's very prone to falling apart so I'm
18:56 not gonna be displaying it with the figures and final looks and I'm not
18:59 gonna be displaying it either when it comes to putting these guys on the shelf
19:02 I will though be putting these guys on the shelf because now we got ourselves
19:05 the first release of an atomic skull and again I'm sure it's not the last being
19:09 the fact that it's a lesser-known character they decided instead to use a
19:13 brand new mold what they did instead they used a Lex Luthor mold what they
19:17 only changed again tweaked some of it but the fact that they used a torso like
19:20 this that I don't even recognize not to say that the mold hadn't been used
19:24 before I just don't identify it I do identify the fact that the majority of
19:28 his body is using the same armored suits armored suit Lex Luthor body but yet
19:33 they changed the front of his armor and I would love to again see that use of
19:36 that armor maybe with a future Lex Luthor release Superman is just doing
19:40 what Superman does when it comes to action comics 1000 if you already have
19:44 the original action comics 1000 Superman then you already know the territory
19:47 you're covering with the one that we get released here but don't overlook this
19:50 set for the Superman if anything get the set for Superman as well because now
19:54 we're getting Superman in classic colors and again it makes you appreciate how
19:58 good that mold was when we first got it just updating it with much appreciated
20:02 additional colors I don't like again the coloring of his cape I don't like the
20:05 coloring of his trunks it's way too orange it need to be a lot redder than
20:09 it was and of course I can always appreciate when they put a Superman
20:12 emblem on the back of his cape it's few and far between that ever seems to
20:16 happen but I think it's close to giving us a perfect looking classic looking
20:20 Superman get the set for atomic skull but don't say I'm gonna be getting in
20:24 the set and I just happen to get another Superman with it no appreciate the fact
20:28 we're getting a better Superman than the first action comics 1000 we got from
20:31 before from McFarlane's team this is a currently available set I mean sure you
20:35 probably could find this in your regular retail stores to find it online the set
20:39 isn't brand new but it's one that is still wanted to pick up now that I have
20:43 picked it up I'm happy to have both figures on the shelf with a new version
20:47 of atomic skull the only atomic skull and a much better looking Superman have
20:51 you pick up the set for yourself let me know down below in the comment section
20:53 and what do you think of the Superman updated color scheme do you think like
20:57 maybe the cape is way too orange do you like the additional paint that they
21:00 have now afforded on the figures face what do you like about the classic
21:03 colors of Superman or do you just maybe prefer the original darker colors that
21:07 the action comics 1000 Superman approached let me know what you think of
21:10 it down below in the comment section and again if you guys did enjoy this video
