00:00Alan Scott's son got a release. Now I just need to get him released from this plastic prison.
00:04Here's your look at McFarlane Toys, DC Direct, McFarlane Gold Label Collection, Obsidian.
00:08McFarlane Toys.
00:38McFarlane discovers he has a twin sister, Jenny Lynn Hayden, after reuniting the two following their father's footsteps and become superheroes and founding members of Infinity, Inc.
00:47Luckily for the safety of the guy behind the camera, I didn't have to take a trip down to the Shadowlands to grab Obsidian.
00:51No, the figure was provided by McFarlane Toys. I'd like to thank them for that.
00:55We're going to get things going by taking the tape measuring and see how tall the figure stands.
00:58Then we'll also bring in some other examples of figures we've looked at before.
01:02Obsidian is going to be standing at about seven and a quarter inches in height.
01:05If those like to measure their figures in centimeters, we'd like to ask the question how much in centimeters, the answer to that is about 18 centimeters tall.
01:13Obsidian was one of the founding members of the hero group Infinity, Inc.
01:16That team, though, may sound familiar because I name dropped it earlier this week.
01:20Anybody want to take a guess what figure that was?
01:23It was only a couple of days ago.
01:26No virtual stars for you.
01:28It was actually Mr. Bones.
01:29Mr. Bones did debut in issue number 16 of Infinity, Inc. back in the early 80s.
01:34And that's not just where the two connections stop.
01:36The fact that both figures, Obsidian and Mr. Bones, are using the same bodies.
01:40Wait, humbled reviewer, you can't tell us that those are exactly the same.
01:43Well, no, to be fair, Mr. Bones does have, though, a few additional bells and whistles like the tops of his gloves, the tops of his boots.
01:49But other than that, though, they're using the somewhat of the same body.
01:52They're also using the same cape.
01:54And the more, though, I look...
01:55One of the issues I really had, though, with Mr. Bones was that he didn't have a pointed collar.
01:58But Obsidian has a more rounded collar, so I think the cape was more designed for him.
02:03And they just used the same design.
02:05While I don't have his pops, Alan Scott, at least I have another Green Lantern member.
02:09Here's what the figure looks like with Hal Jordan.
02:11I hope to have an easier time spitting this out.
02:13The figure does come...
02:14What?
02:15The figure does come included with a displaced and a trading card.
02:18Two pairs of swappable hands.
02:20And again, this.
02:21The figure does have, not necessarily, though, a first appearance of Obsidian.
02:25That would be nice.
02:25But rather, though, a thick cardboard card.
02:29Now, if you are dating it back...
02:31Hey, wait.
02:31Mr. Bones had that as well.
02:33No redemption of virtual stars still for you.
02:35Yeah, Mr. Bones also had the exact same thing.
02:37Big, thick cards.
02:39It almost even looks like it's four layers of cardboard, all sort of glued together.
02:44They finished it nicely, though, still with silver.
02:46But looking at this, I feel compelled to kind of peel this apart.
02:49And I know I'm only just going to be damaging it.
02:52One side, though, has it all black and white.
02:53If you like the look of black and white, you can obviously have that displayed behind the
02:57city in that way.
02:58But like Mr. Bones, you don't have to do it with the sound effects, mind you.
03:01You can also have a colorized version of it also as well.
03:04Let's not knock the figure down in the process.
03:07You know, it's weird, though.
03:08I wonder what the thought process is that they're including things like this.
03:12On one end, I mean, it's nice to have these displayed behind the figures.
03:15But why not have comics?
03:16I would think, like, comics would just be a cheaper means of producing media rather than
03:20having, you know, again, thick cardboard.
03:22Wouldn't just the weight of this alone add some additional weight to the plastic and
03:25shipping of this figure out?
03:27Paper and flippable paper, even for comics.
03:30I feel like that would be a more cost-saving thing to produce, says, of course, the guy
03:35behind the camera.
03:36I have no experience at all of producing action figures.
03:39I can tell you, though, at least from my own observation, that Obsidian also does come
03:42include with a trading card that is the exact same thing it is.
03:45It's just right here a few moments ago as the big, thick card.
03:48The image, though, on the front is exactly the same.
03:52And it's pretty close to the figure.
03:53I mean, he's had a few costume changes, variations later on in life.
03:57On the back, though, of the card, I was kind of expecting to find a read-up.
04:00And I don't.
04:01What we get, though, instead, is something I did make mention of in an earlier review.
04:04And I don't think I have any weight whatsoever as to what decision-making is going on with
04:09McFarlane toys.
04:10If it is the case, let me know, Todd.
04:12And I'm more than happy just to throw more ideas, like idea Ninja Stars, just throwing
04:18it your way.
04:18Maybe not Ninja Stars would be the best idea to be throwing at the creator of these comics
04:21and figures.
04:23But one of the things I did recommend, though, is it would be nice that they could include
04:26the first appearance, first mention of the first debut of this character.
04:29His debut is, in fact, All-Star Squadron, Volume 1, issue number 25, September 1983.
04:35His real name is Todd James Rice.
04:37Height is 5'11", weight is 193 pounds, eyes brown.
04:41Not that it really matters.
04:43And his hair is also brown.
04:44Not that, again, it really matters.
04:45And his powers of abilities are transformation into shadow form, superhuman strength, flight,
04:51size alteration, shadow construct, and manipulation.
04:54Allies are Jade, Alan Scott, Damon Matthews.
04:58While, though, we have to kind of look at the good with the bad, the bad, though, is unfortunately
05:02we missed now out on a complete read-up.
05:04So for me to have to say something at the beginning of this review while a guy's rotating in a rotisserie,
05:08I have to pull something from online.
05:09I pulled it from Wikipedia.
05:10But still, though, we take, though, the bad, we take it with the good.
05:14The good, though, at least, is we have a first appearance mentioned on the back of the card.
05:18This is something I really like.
05:19Again, I miss the fact there's not a read-up, more so just for the selfishness of this guy
05:23just having to have something to read at the beginning of his review.
05:25But again, I take the positives with that.
05:27Let's move that off to the side.
05:29Positively speaking, the figure does have pretty much the same things that Mr. Bones already
05:34has.
05:34He's going to call him Dr. Bones.
05:36Dammit, Jim.
05:36I'm a figure, not a doctor.
05:38The figure does come included, though, with a display stand.
05:42This stand does have the DC logo still down below here.
05:45And again, not that far away from that.
05:46There's a little peg that can plug into either one of Obsidian's boots.
05:49Ideas, ideas, ideas.
05:54Let's put that over there.
05:55One idea that it seemed that they had was also using and recycling the same hands from
05:59Mr. Bones.
06:00Mr. Bones had also these exact same hands, not obviously done here in blue.
06:04But just to show you, though, where's the right hand?
06:06Hand to hand, thumb to thumb, the exact same hands.
06:10The comparisons also still continue.
06:12The figure does also have a triggering hand.
06:14Not really sure why.
06:16Clearly looks like he's supposed to be holding something, but he has squats.
06:18And then he also comes with a pair of, well, closed fists are really on the ends of his
06:22arms.
06:23And he also comes with a dynamic hand, which the dynamic hand currently is on the forearm
06:27of Mr. Bones.
06:28So that's why I can't really do the comparison there.
06:30The swapping of the hands also is exactly the same.
06:33So we take the closed fists on the ends of Obsidian's forearms.
06:38Ow!
06:39We don't have to make noise while we're doing that.
06:40We're going to take the gestured hand.
06:42You saw how simple it was just to remove it from the peg.
06:45Take the new hand.
06:46And glide it carefully, carefully, carefully back onto the peg.
06:52And that's easy.
06:52Boy, that is easy.
06:54Let's do it on this side as well.
06:55Take the hand that we want to use, unplug that, and plug it back in place.
06:59And now we've got Obsidian with different hands than what he started with.
07:03What he starts with, though, getting him out of the packaging, is clearly the observation
07:06that the figure's using the same body as Mr. Bones.
07:09Same cape design, too.
07:10And I still think, like looking at the cape, yes, it is fabric cape, and it does have a
07:14wire built into it.
07:16It's not so much built, more sewn in place.
07:19But the cape is the exact same pattern.
07:21The collar is also identical, too.
07:23And the more, though, I look at it, the more I think the collar and the cape design was designed
07:27for Obsidian first.
07:29And then they just replicated the look and the pattern for Mr. Bones.
07:32Because, again, I feel like Mr. Bones should have really had a pointed collar.
07:35Obsidian generally is known for having more of a rounded collar.
07:37And this fits better, I think, this figure.
07:40The head sculpt is pretty good.
07:41I mean, he has more of a smiling face.
07:43I don't know, though, if I would have really sculpted the teeth.
07:46I know the teeth do add a little bit of extra detailing.
07:48But usually, though, when you see Obsidian, he usually has more of just a white mouth.
07:53We just suggest the idea that those are perhaps teeth.
07:56The white eyes look good.
07:58I mean, there's a lot of real details on his face that probably wouldn't have been captured
08:01as much in the comics.
08:02You can see also some additional sculpting on the side for his ear.
08:05I like it.
08:06I think it's a good-looking head.
08:08And I think generally, though, I mean, maybe not having necessarily the smiling on the face,
08:12but I do like that you can see his mouth.
08:14It just adds a little bit of white to the general black that he has for his face.
08:18The black also does continue down below here as well.
08:21Now, most of this, I'm guessing, has probably been molded in the blue plastic.
08:24So then maybe they had to have gone in there and painted the shoulders.
08:28This seems like this would be the easier thing than rather molding this all in black plastic
08:32and then painting this part all in blue.
08:34Still, either way, though, the paint's handled pretty well.
08:37He's got these open holes or these dots all over the top of his sleeve, for example.
08:41And he also has it on the sides of his legs there, too.
08:44Now, depending on where you read Obsidian, generally, though, his necklace and his belt
08:48will vary.
08:49Like, if you compare it, for example, to the card, it looks like it's outlined in silver
08:53and the inside orbs are all done in blue.
08:56Later, though, on in the comics, he would actually have something a little bit more like this,
09:00where it's a pearl color with a little hint of blue.
09:03Similar, though, to Mr. Bones, this is just a separate piece.
09:05So if you really wanted to, I suppose you could take this off.
09:08But why would you want to?
09:09What are you really going to do with it anyways?
09:11Where does a ring?
09:12How big is your finger?
09:13How big are those sausages that this would fit over your finger?
09:16The belt is also something that's an appliance over top of an existing torso.
09:20It does look like it's more frictioned on there.
09:22So if you lifted this past this point, it'd probably be a little bit more of a looser mess.
09:28Because he is using the same mold as previous figures, he does have a few little carries
09:32over from previous ones.
09:34So he's got this little kind of wristband sculpt, even though the figure really shouldn't
09:38have it from a character standpoint.
09:40All in all, though, again, like the paint is pretty minimal.
09:42I mean, there's not really much that they had to really do with it.
09:44Again, the torso really all being molded here in the black, in the blue plastic.
09:48And again, they've done really only the same here with the arms.
09:50They only would have had gone in there and painted that in black.
09:53Legs would have been sculpted in black plastic.
09:55And then they would have only needed to paint the blue for the boots.
09:58All in all, though, I think the blue match is pretty close.
10:00The part that's sculpted versus the part that's molded is pretty close in blue.
10:05You could say that maybe this one's a little duller, but I think like the color matching
10:08is pretty good on this figure.
10:09Color matching even in here is pretty good too, where like the arm sleeve coloring of the
10:13blue matches pretty good with what normally would have started in molding blue plastic.
10:17As mentioned, the cape does have a wire.
10:20Now, the wire is really, first of all, like the cape is attached right underneath here,
10:24just under the collar, and it's actually firmly socketed inside the shoulders.
10:28So there's no real way to take the cape off.
10:31There's a wire.
10:32Follow me along.
10:33There's a wire that starts here.
10:37All the way down to the bottom of the cape and right across the bottom of the cape as well.
10:42So if you wanted to manipulate it, you can manipulate a little bit better.
10:45I still don't know if I love having the wire built in the bottom.
10:48It just kind of makes the cape feel weighted and kind of just hard and difficult to bend
10:52around.
10:53Some people like it.
10:54Some people don't.
10:55Let me know what you think down below.
10:57For the figure's articulation, if you're familiar, though, with Mr. Bones, which again,
11:01I've done, I would like to think a pretty extensive review of him.
11:04Go feel free to check it out if you want.
11:06The articulation of this guy is going to be exactly the same.
11:09Head's going to be on a bowl joint.
11:10Yes, it is.
11:11So it's going to move up and down.
11:13You can sway it back and forth.
11:15Of course, you could rotate it all the way around as well.
11:17The top of the torso is going to be on a bowl joint.
11:20And with that, too, the figure does also have a bowl joint in the base of his abdomen.
11:24The belt that they've now applied doesn't get in at all in the way.
11:27So there's quite a lot that you can do with both.
11:29Arms rotate all the way around.
11:30Now, his arms luckily weren't as loose as Mr. Bones.
11:33Mr. Bones, I think, had it only more looser on one side.
11:37Maybe it was this side.
11:38And the other side was pretty tight.
11:39Both the joints on the shoulder seem pretty tight for obsidian.
11:42No issues there.
11:43The arms rotate all the way around.
11:45There is a swivel.
11:47But the swivel, if you look at it, they've done it nicely where they've sort of hidden it.
11:52The swivel is just above the blue.
11:54But you can't even spot where it is.
11:56Because, again, it's just hidden past that point of color.
11:59There's double bend in the elbow.
12:00The hands do rotate all the way around.
12:02Hinge back and forth there, too.
12:04The legs do split.
12:06And you can take those legs and move forward.
12:07You can move them back.
12:08Swivel at the top of the thigh.
12:09That's always good there, as well.
12:11Double hinge on the knee.
12:12Now, even though this part here is painted, I'm sure it's by no surprise to anybody that
12:16there's no posability here at all.
12:18It's not a sculpted boot, necessarily.
12:20It's all done here effectively in paint.
12:22An ankle pivot.
12:24An ankle rocker.
12:25Why are we whispering?
12:27And he does also have toe articulation, as well.
12:29This may not be a figure that I think everybody's going to go for.
12:32I mean, at one point, obsidian did become a bad guy.
12:35I feel like I'd almost want to really display him more as a bad guy, even though the big
12:38smile on his face kind of just does defeat the purpose of him being a big baddie.
12:42But I think I'd rather almost even have him on display as a big, like a bad guy, as a
12:46villain, more so as a hero.
12:47And again, here's what he looks like with his mold.
12:49Brother, Mr. Bones, again, both appeared in Infinity Inc.
12:53He appeared, though, in issue number 16, whereas this guy actually founded Infinity Inc.
12:57He first debuted in All-Star Squadron, volume one, number 25.
13:01Did you just pop that, pull that out from your head?
13:03I didn't, no, I pulled it off from the back of the card, which again, is something that
13:08as, unfortunately, as we get near the end of the lineage of DC Multiverse, I'm glad that
13:12they are still finding new ideas that they can put with their figures.
13:15One idea that I really had hoped they were going to run with at some point was adding
13:20the first appearance of the character on the back of the card.
13:22And even then, one better, put a first appearance issue on the front of the card as well.
13:26So, you know, there's some reference pulled there as well.
13:29All in all, though, like I like the coloring for Obsidian.
13:31I like the cape.
13:32The cape is one thing I didn't think I was going to really like as much because it's
13:35kind of a bit of a pastel blue.
13:37But again, like it's pretty comic accurate, which I think also the cape works a little
13:42bit better, I feel, for Obsidian than it does for Mr. Bones.
13:44Just more of the fact that the top of the collar for the cape for Mr. Bones, I felt really
13:48needed to be pointier.
13:49I think it works a little bit better here in this case for Obsidian.
13:52All in all, though, it's a good looking figure.
13:53I think this would still be one if it wasn't provided as a sample.
13:56I would still source out.
13:57I like the coloring of him.
13:58He kind of, again, kind of evokes the earlier days, like the superpowers, you know, where
14:02you had your red tornadoes, you had your Martian Manhunters.
14:05Sort of he has that same kind of design in just a different color scheme.
14:09And the color scheme, I think, works really well for this character.
14:12All in all, I think it's a home run hit.
14:13I don't know.
14:14I like the cape better, I think, on Obsidian.
14:16I think by looking, though, at the two molds, I still think Mr. Bones is definitely,
14:20though, a better figure of the two that we got released.
14:22But no slouching, though, on Obsidian.
14:23He turned out really good.
14:25Like, I have to go to bat for Obsidian and convince collectors to pick up a figure that
14:28they have generally just no interest in.
14:30You may not know anything about the backstory of Tom James Rice.
14:33I mean, he clearly isn't a Bruce Wayne.
14:35And maybe that's a good thing, too.
14:36For the argument that collectors have made that Todd loves his Caped Crusader and we get
14:40a whole lot of Batman, every once in a while, we don't get a Batman.
14:44And Obsidian's a good example of that.
14:46Well, yes, the body is still being used from a Mr. Bones that we've gotten before.
14:49I mean, again, like, it's not just Mr. Bones.
14:51It predates back even further than that, but at least they've done things differently
14:55here for Obsidian by incorporating some really interesting colors.
14:58I mean, I would admit, like, the pastel blue wouldn't be my first choice for a Caped color,
15:03especially with the blue that he already has.
15:04And that, it's pretty accurate to the way he appears in the comics.
15:07Mix that, then, with the pearlesque blue that he has for that collar piece and that he
15:11also has in his belt.
15:12And one thing that's also going for this figure is the way they've color matched the boots
15:15and the sleeves.
15:16I mean, those are all painted in blue.
15:18The torso as a whole isn't.
15:19It's molded in blue plastic.
15:21The face is good.
15:22I don't know if necessarily I would have sculpted teeth myself.
15:25I think just having a white mouth would have worked just as well.
15:28And yes, while he does have the same hands as Mr. Bones, the one other thing he also
15:31has, too, is that cardboard background.
15:35The little standee.
15:36I guess it's supposed to be a standee.
15:37It's supposed to go on the back of the figure when you're displaying them on the shelf.
15:40I don't know if I really have a practical purpose of having that display, because,
15:44you know, you've got to keep in mind, too, that's taking three figures wide of a real
15:47estate space.
15:48I mean, Mr. Bones had it.
15:50Obsidian had it.
15:51I don't know if that's the trend that we're going to run with moving forward with DC direct
15:54releases, that instead of a comic, they're going to go with the cardboard.
15:58I think it would have been cheaper to produce a comic and to include that.
16:01But maybe it boiled down to licensing.
16:03They just couldn't get the issue of Infinity Inc.
16:06And maybe it was the same for Mr. Bones, that using at least, though, just a larger scale
16:10version of the trading card worked better for their budget.
16:14I don't know.
16:14I just think the comic would have worked a little bit better.
16:16Again, says the guy that has not at all experience when it comes to producing figures.
16:21But what do you guys think of this guy?
16:22Let me know down below in the comments section.
16:23First, do you like the look of Obsidian?
16:24And how do you feel about the cardboard included thing that they have?
16:28I don't know if I would say that it's a standee because it doesn't really stand on its own.
16:32It's multiple sheets of cardboard all sort of adhered together with a front and back of
16:36the same image.
16:37One just happens to be in black and white.
16:39The other one in color.
16:41A big thank you again to the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did provide this sample
16:44of the brand new DC direct Obsidian.
16:47Obsidian.
16:49Obsidian.
16:49Not a Batman that we had the chance to have a look at this review.
16:52What do you guys think of them?
16:53Let me know down below in the comments section.
16:54And if you guys did also enjoy this video, why not do it as well and throw it a like?
16:58If you guys want to stick around for more so, I hope so.
17:00We're moving away from looking at Obsidian.
17:02We're going to kind of move our focus into other caped heroes, maybe even villains as
17:06well, as we continue the rest of the DC Multiverse reviews for the rest of this week.
17:10So I hope you guys are going to be coming back for that.
17:12As always, thanks for watching.
17:13See you guys next time.
17:24We'll see you next time.
