00:31 batarang. Every puzzle will put your Batman knowledge to test. So become the
00:35 world's greatest detective with the Riddler Puzzle Box. Now just before we
00:40 test wits with one of the greatest minds in Gotham City, well second greatest
00:45 minds in Gotham City, I'd like to first thank the folks over at McFarlane Toys
00:48 that did provide this sample of the DC Direct the Riddler Puzzle Box Detective
00:52 Mode variant that we could have a look at this review. There are in fact two
00:55 versions of the puzzle box. The Detective Mode variant does rely though on black
00:59 light and just happen to have a black light available just off to the side
01:02 which I'll bring in in a moment. I'm also as well gonna take the tape measure and
01:05 see how big this is. Now this is a puzzle box so it'd be safe to assume that its
01:09 height is the same as its width. You're looking at the puzzle box being about
01:13 five inches in height or it's gonna be about 13 centimeters tall. As I did say
01:19 though I have myself a black light just off to the side which I will be turning
01:22 on and illuminating as there are some hidden clues all across the box. Before
01:26 of course we do that though I did want to pick up the box and show you guys
01:28 what it looks like. Its construction is made of plastic and yet there's a lot of
01:33 weight behind the scenes because of course there's a lot of mechanical
01:35 things are gonna be working inside the box to open up the various different
01:39 puzzles that we will be faced against but it's a really all-in-all nice
01:42 looking box. Again it's been very painted well here. It's more of a
01:46 gunmetal gray silver. You've got a little dial there on the side that will be a
01:50 safe. We'll be opening that up in a second and there is on on the top of as
01:53 well living up to the namesake of the Riddler painted on question mark that
01:58 will of course be one of the many various puzzles that we will be facing
02:01 here. There is a total of four puzzles all of which again have to be in order
02:05 of a certain sequence and starting first that sequence of course this video will
02:10 be showing you guys exactly how to solve the puzzle box but it would certainly
02:13 encourage you guys for yourselves if you didn't want to watch this review if you
02:16 had the plan to maybe get yourself the puzzle box and you don't want how to see
02:19 how all the stuff gets spoiled definitely would suggest first picking
02:23 up the box for yourself and if you're having then problems to solve it for
02:26 yourself by all means come back and watch this video again. Now I'm gonna
02:30 grab that the black light again because this is gonna be the detective mode
02:33 version. The detective mode basically does away with the very obvious printing
02:37 that some of the box the original regular release would have. When you
02:40 shine the light for a second say across the box it sort of starts to
02:44 illuminate clues to things that you will be having to press. Now I already know
02:48 the order that we will be pressing and activating the things on the box so
02:51 again full spoilers being presented here in this review but again if you see the
02:56 front of it first of all you can see that there's various question marks
02:59 there's actually a total of four question marks with this one specifically
03:02 having a box outlined around it. If you look at the top for example there
03:07 doesn't seem to be anything a few little flecks of say glow-in-the-dark and
03:10 there's also other things that are also illuminated all around the box as well.
03:13 Again we'll be getting down to that more in a moment. The first way to solve the
03:18 box is actually to look at the front here. You've got these various gold knobs
03:22 they're all of a very similar sort until in fact you actually take yourself to
03:26 black light. You see there's question marks all across them with this one
03:30 specifically being a little bit different than the others. So we're gonna
03:33 go ahead and we're gonna press this button here releasing the key. The key
03:38 does have outlined or carved inside of it you can see there's the question mark
03:42 for the Riddler. Now one thing that's interesting that you may not know right
03:46 away is that this does have a magnet. The magnet is built into the top of the
03:50 of the bolt and that will be one of the things that will activate something
03:54 that's on the box. Again I've already taken the liberty of already solving the
03:57 box. I've solved it now four times already. What you'll do first is you'll
04:01 take the key and if you look to the top here now running the light of course
04:06 across it there's no clues there's nothing really to tell you exactly
04:09 something that you're going to be pressing on this not at least in this
04:12 area but if you look at the puzzle box there's all these tiles these tiles do
04:16 shift but of course you have to remove one of them in order to remove and start
04:19 moving the rest of them if you take the end of the key bolt and you put it right
04:23 in the middle here it removes this tile right in the middle and from there while
04:29 nothing else really does move take the bottom of it and you slide this up you
04:34 can then press the button that's located on the top by pressing that it opens up
04:38 the safe inside and you get yourself one part of the batarang. The batarang is a
04:43 one-to-one scale it's called all cast here in metal we're gonna open this up
04:47 now while I have solved this honestly I haven't even put together the batarang
04:51 yet I figured I'd wait for this review of course the actual batarang itself is
04:55 made of all metal and it's got a magnet here on the side because when you when
04:59 you get all three of them put together these magnets will just attach to the
05:03 side of the middle piece to the batarang and then you've got yourself a
05:06 one-to-one prop we're gonna put that to the side because we don't need that just
05:09 yet then you also get yourself our first clue the first clue has crossed out
05:14 seasons with only greetings down below we open up the card and inside it says
05:19 welcome friends to your very own puzzle box made by me the Riddler to continue
05:23 you'll need to phone some friends forget the bats call the bird and the cat and
05:28 start with your oldest friend first success is just a few clicks away good
05:33 luck en Edward Nygma so there's our first clue now I don't know if you have
05:38 seen this if I tilt it slightly to the side you may notice that there's a few
05:42 little prints printings there on the back we're once again gonna take our
05:45 black light we're gonna shine it across it now in ordered sequence you can see
05:49 from the top there's number one with the question mark all the way down below
05:52 with the chemicals now that looks to be poison ivy and that's marked as number
05:56 nine actually nine is right here and there's some additional down below
05:58 there if you look at them though and we looked at the clues the clues first
06:02 indicated that we had to press like again we're just gonna go back to the
06:05 clue instructions here it says you'll have to phone some friends forget the
06:09 bats call the bird the cat so the bird if you look at it the bird is actually
06:15 we've got ourselves Robin up the top then we're gonna be calling the cat and
06:20 then you're gonna be starting with your oldest friend now your oldest friend if
06:23 you look at it if you look at the order of it let me just put the box a little
06:26 bit closer to the camera so you can see so we'll start first with Robin then
06:30 we'll go to the cats then we'll go to Dick Grayson before we settle then on
06:34 Batman before we do that though there's one other thing that's also included
06:38 inside the top here we've got ourselves a little newspaper article the Gotham
06:42 City Gazette dated from May 1939 a reference to Batman's first appearance
06:47 mystery crusader thwarts murderers then on the back it says to open the vault
06:51 you must have the heart dial the year when the bat got his start so based on
06:57 that what we're gonna do is we're gonna go to the side of the safe here and
07:00 there's a combination now based on the combination you would set this to 1939
07:06 now obviously the dial is only going from say 20 or actually starts at zero
07:09 and works away all the way up to 90 we're gonna set it though to 40 or just
07:13 below that and when you get to a point where it gets past 40 at around 39 it
07:19 immediately opens up then the safe inside the safe you get the main piece
07:24 to the batarang you also as well and just take the plastic piece out here the
07:29 only downside is once you start once you've solved the safe this is the
07:32 hardest part to put back in place you also get it yourself some inserted cards
07:36 and we also got ourselves another clue there as well so we'll put the box right
07:40 there we have two ID cards that have been cut up you can see and then we also
07:46 have ourselves another clue the clue I just open this up here first says Wayne
07:51 Industries from the office of Edward Nigma inside it says line the keys to
07:56 success to claim your prize okay so based on that what we're gonna do is
08:02 we're gonna take them the ID cards and if you look at the ID cards both say
08:05 Wayne Industries but one says Lucius Fox president and CEO and the other one says
08:10 Bruce Wayne owner so how do you line them up flip the card around though to
08:14 the back and you'll see it has a question mark if you line the two
08:17 question marks together you'll take them the ID card and slot it on the side
08:22 there's an opening to the box now you'll fit this in and it doesn't go in all the
08:27 way you kind of have to take it and push it a little further than what you were
08:30 hoping there we go and push it all the way in now it's not doing much of
08:35 anything at all but remember that other clue that we had to work with the one
08:40 where is the card the card was right over here here we go
08:43 welcome friends once again to continue you'll need to phone some friends forget
08:47 the bats call the bird the Robin of course the cat Catwoman and your oldest
08:51 friend first now that would be Dick Grayson and then it from there you'll go
08:55 back to Batman so based on the clues if you look on the other on the other side
08:59 actually first of all just before we do that I want to run the light on the
09:02 front of it you can see it says riddle me this but if you look to the side
09:04 you'll see there's fingerprints on the keys being four being three six and nine
09:10 so somebody's already been pressing those buttons on the keys so if we were
09:14 to say look at the instructions if you look at the clues are there on the top
09:17 you've got Robin Robin first Catwoman the Nightwing then Batman based on that
09:22 you can hit Robin first then Catwoman the Nightwing and then finally Batman
09:28 and when you press Batman it then opens up the front drawer revealing the final
09:34 last step to solving the puzzle box and opening this up first of all you got
09:39 yourself a little question mark and then opening up and seeing the inside says
09:42 you solved all my riddles well done and congrats bully for you you're as smart
09:47 as the bat though the game is now over this isn't the end but everything back
09:52 and challenge a friend once again from Edward Digma and the last thing we get
09:56 then inside which is kind of actually a little harder to get out is the last
10:01 piece to the battering now through the many various puzzles we've already
10:05 solved you take one end of the battering it slides in place like that and then
10:10 we're gonna take the other end of the battering and that's also gonna slide in
10:13 as well and once that's in place we got ourselves a metal one-to-one scale
10:18 battering very nice the only thing it doesn't have unfortunately though is a
10:22 display stand and I feel like looking at the puzzle box there may have been
10:25 probably a little compartment space on the bottom that could have opened up for
10:28 example and had a little standee but the fun thing about this is when you're done
10:32 not only do you have yourself an interesting looking prop that can be
10:35 put on your shelf but you can also then reset the box by pressing zero on the
10:39 keypad put in of course everything back the way it was pressing the zero again
10:43 then that resets or relocks the box because if you don't reset it what ends
10:47 up ultimately happening every single time you put the key card in it will
10:51 then be opening up the drawer so once you can put the key card in which again
10:55 like the key card is only the hardest thing that seems to be there we go once
10:58 you put push that in normally it pops the drawer back out so you want to make
11:02 sure you reset it by pressing zero and then the box can then be given to a
11:07 friend to solve the puzzle it's a really interesting way to incorporate a game
11:11 along with an actual prop the prop itself is the box of course that Riddler
11:15 gives you but the fun that goes along with it is the solving of the puzzle now
11:20 again like this is the detective mode so of course for this you may require
11:23 yourself a black light you want to you could also go the route of going the
11:27 standard release which would have basically had all the things already
11:29 printed across the box it's a really interesting thing that McFarlane has
11:33 done here for DC Direct by giving us not only something that looks great on a
11:37 shelf but something that also tests your wits as well well now
11:42 that we've solved Edward Nigma's puzzle box we are gifted at least with a
11:46 one-to-one scale metal batarang I'm not really sure why there had to be magnetic
11:50 pieces inside the wings probably they may have put that also in there so there
11:54 wasn't the risk that the wings slid off because initially before I started
11:58 putting everything together I would I just assumed it was the case I would
12:01 take the side of the wings and they were just attached by magnets alone but no in
12:04 fact you actually have to slide the wings in the provided grooves it's a
12:07 nice-looking batarang but there's really not much you can do with the batarang
12:10 once it's been put together I wish that the box could have also gifted us not
12:13 only just puzzling riddles but also as well as standee that we could have
12:17 actually taken the batarang and propped it with without that though the
12:20 batarang really other than just looking really great it doesn't have a place to
12:24 actually be stored or displayed I might see if I can find myself a little
12:28 standee to store it I will definitely be putting this one on display I've loved
12:32 the idea that we got first of all a prop that would look like something that
12:35 Edward Nygma would have but also one that was functional the fact that you as
12:39 a collector would actually have to solve four riddles to unlock all the pieces
12:43 required to build the batarang and I think that's something fun that McFarlane
12:47 has done here I can't know I don't know whether they're gonna plan to release a
12:50 version 2 puzzle box but I'd be all open to the idea of getting another version
12:54 of this similar in size but with completely different riddles from this
12:57 one have you had the chance to pick up the Riddler puzzle box and if you have
13:02 which one did you end up getting now again there is the regular version of it
13:05 that has all basically the markings and the clues very visibly a very visibly
13:09 aware or there's also the one that we got here the detective mode variant that
13:13 does require at least on your part the illumination of a black light I kind of
13:17 like actually the detective variant because it also adds a little more to
13:21 the riddle as well it's not just a case where you can actually look at the box
13:24 and solve it right away that little bit of black light also does help to give
13:28 you a little bit of clues as to exactly how to solve the box big thank you once
13:32 again though to the folks over at McFarlane toys that did provide this
13:35 sample of the DC direct the Riddler puzzle box detective mode variant if you
