00:00Should we all be concerned that Mondo's starting to ship out something sinister?
00:04Here's a look at the new Mondo X-Men 97 Mr. Sinister 1-6 scale figure limited edition.
00:28Mondo's 1-6 scale line for Marvel's animation X-Men 97 continues with the mad genesis Dr.
00:34Nathaniel Essex aka Mr. Sinister complete with swappable hands and portraits this immortal
00:40supervillain includes attachable blast effects and easter egg accessories inspired by some of
00:45our favorite episodes from the history of the series restricted to only 1250 units the deluxe
00:51limited edition variant features exclusive extras including additional portraits plus a sinister
00:56shadow buddy we know how obsessed sinister seems to be with the summers luckily though for you guys
01:01no you don't have to wait for the summer if you're looking to get your hands right now on the
01:04Mondo X-Men 97 Mr. Sinister he's available right now on Mondo's site for 265 dollars but with a very
01:12limited quantity and it doesn't seem to be any other version of Mr. Sinister available you may
01:16want to grab this guy before he disappears in a second though we're going to also bring in an
01:22X-Men figure that Mondo has made in the past but living for the now right now we're going to
01:25grab
01:26the tape measure and get things going for how tall the figure is going to stand now you may notice
01:29right
01:30now I've left the cape off the cape in a second will be added to the back of his body
01:34but for at
01:35least how tall the figure is going to stand if I go right to the very top of his head
01:3812 inches 12
01:39inches of Mr. Sinister that's going to work out to be a figure that's 30 centimeters tall now I don't
01:44have a Cyclops but I do at least have a Wolverine and with at least bringing in Wolverine you can
01:48see
01:49that there's quite the considerable size difference between him and Mr. Sinister SX does come with an
01:53excess amount of accessories but I figured though the first thing we would have a look at
01:57is his X-Men themed display stand what I do like right away though is that the actual stand does
02:02have texturing to it it's not just that it's been printed it but they've actually raised the surface
02:06of the X and the ring around it does consist though of two parts just removing the part you get
02:11yourself the adjustable neck of course we've seen these before and that just slots into the top like
02:16that one thing though I will say about Mr. Sinister maybe they could have made an exception if you look
02:23at the top of the display stand post the figure's legs essentially will cradle over top of this
02:28but considering that he also does have wings that go on the back of his body that cape piece that
02:33he
02:33has I would probably have even recommended still that they've also would have curved the front
02:38just to properly hold the figure in place because if you take Mr. Sinister and in fact you put him
02:43down
02:43on the display stand you can see that it does cradle him well enough but had they just curved the
02:49front
02:49just a little bit more I think it would have also added a little bit more stability because of
02:54course now we're also incorporating some wings the cape that's going to go snapped on to the back
02:58of his torso all right all right so with so much the cover why don't we start with fists first
03:02and the
03:02fact that he does have them on the ends of his forearms you don't like the look of the fists
03:06would like to
03:06change them out instead Mr. Sinister does in fact also come include with gripping hands now these hands
03:12are also ideal as well for the fact that the figure does also come include with a tentacle piece
03:17this mutant DNA extraction tentacle does look gnarly doesn't it it almost even in fact looks like
03:23something a poison ivy would have growing in her garden doesn't seem to be at all any posability
03:28possessed at all by the tentacle but though it's ideal if you want to get that inside his hand and
03:34it holds it really well again you can pop the hands off just swap them out with the hand that
03:38I
03:38have right now or you can also entertain as well the idea that the figure does have a couple of
03:43relaxed
03:43hands too so if you don't want him necessarily to be holding anything just have these instead
03:48the figure does also come include with the left hand that has the diamond implant you can see that
03:54the implant is just a smaller real version of what he actually has on the front of his torso
03:59I kind of love the fact that they include all these easter eggs something also that's kind of
04:03interesting too is that he has on the ends well right around his wrists his red bracers if you don't
04:08like the red bracers and rather would like to swap them out with the blue ones instead he does
04:12technically also come include those two as I'm about to just change out the hands I'll kind of
04:16show you guys how that works all you really have to do is pop the hand off and when you
04:20pop the hand
04:21off hold them right away because these bracelets will fall off and then just replace them out with
04:25the blue ones instead the figure does also come include with this little floppy drive now the floppy
04:30disc does actually clip onto his belt there's just a very narrow clip area here and you know what
04:37it's fine and good just to talk about all these things but I did also want to show you guys
04:41what this
04:41looks like with the floppy drive how it works is there's just this little lip to work with and
04:47you have to clip it onto his belt I find it helps just to tilt the figure back a little
04:51bit just so
04:52that this is now freed up you want as much space as possible because that's going to clip over top
04:56of
04:57it yeah may also want to have it a little bit further off to the side it looks great I'm
05:01glad that they
05:02throw in an episode referenced accessory like this the one downside though to it is as you kind of move
05:07mr sinister's torso around there's potentially a risk that that could scrape the pain on the front
05:12of his torso and it's even more of a risk that as you move his torso around this this small
05:17little
05:17thing is going to fall off just look at the detail though on that I did say though that we
05:23are going
05:24to change out the hand so let's you know if we want to stick with maybe the little leech tentacle
05:29what you will want to do though is just see how right now he already has like a red bracelet
05:33you don't like the look of the red bracelet you want to stick with the blue I actually kind of
05:37like the blue Joe a little bit more so we'll hold on to this because as you kind of wiggle
05:43and turn
05:43and twist the hand off you're going to find that easily these bracelets fall off too so we're just
05:48going to pop that off there's the bracelet piece so the difference with that though is that you have
05:53the red one where's the blue one you got the red one you got also as well the blue one
05:58I like the blue myself but if you want to stick with the red stick with the red and that's
06:02just
06:02going to slide up his arm take the hand that you want to use after all that wouldn't you know
06:07it I
06:07just chose the wrong hand take a gripping hand and just put it back on the peg make sure that's
06:13all
06:13the way on there and then now it kind of gives him more the idea of looking like he's got
06:18gloves
06:19so see how we sort of started with the red bracelet we're ending now things with like the
06:23blue part of the top part of his glove I think that's really cool the fact that they wouldn't include
06:28something like that now it looks a little off obviously the fact he's only got it on the one side
06:32should we maybe change the other okay we'll do it too by the way also as I'm kind of changing
06:36things
06:37you'll notice that with even the bracelet they've added cell shading to it see how all the bottom
06:42section of his bicep and his forearm have a dark strip of darker blue well actually the bracelet has
06:47that too just it's all done in black it sits a little loose but it's only going to be there
06:52for a
06:52short period of time until I just pop the hand off take the blue part of the glove just put
06:57that back
06:58on there and now we can go ahead and put the tentacle piece on there so now mr tenta mr
07:04tentacle
07:04mr sinister with tentacle in his hand it's ready to go there we go that looks really cool um other
07:13accessories let's just kind of move everything away let's just kind of clean up shop as we're going
07:17along the figure does also come in clue with a damaged piece that goes on the side of his torso
07:22now I noticed though the way that this works it's plastic but there's a little bit of give to it
07:27so
07:28there's enough at least that you can stretch this out and wrap it around mr sinister's torso kind of
07:33around its abdomen area when you do put it on though this happened to me at least a couple of
07:38times
07:39it sort of had like this uncomfortable snap sound like the plastic was stretching I think it only
07:46happens the first couple of times that you do then after that the plastic is soft enough at least or
07:50you've stretched it out enough at least that it fits fine over top of his torso and it kind of
07:56has to
07:56sit roughly like that maybe just a just a little higher above the belt so I like that they've given
08:02him just a little bit of damage it's in fact the only bit of damage that mr sinister actually does
08:06have but at least something can be said for the fact that they included it I know this whole time
08:11we've kind of overlooked not talking about his wings well the way the way that the cape works
08:17something really I kind of wanted to leave to the last minute just because again there's a lot
08:20of involvement and with the worry of maybe those snapping just kind of the kind of plastic that
08:25they're using here I kind of want to kind of leave the cape for the end the figure does also
08:30come in
08:30clue with blast effect hands now this would have worked so much better had I had the 1-6 scale
08:36x-men 97 cyclops unfortunately not owning that figure what you can do though is if cyclops did have
08:42an optic blast and then mr sinister would then have his own rebuttal you basically could have the two
08:48figures posing with the blast effects coming from mr sinister's hands both of the blast effects by the
08:54way are using a very nice translucent red plastic and with already then sculpting the hands in place
08:59you don't have to worry about trying to fit this over top an existing hand imagine having to worry
09:04about this and then worry about having to attach it onto an independent hand I mean you struggle get
09:10frustrated probably say a few you know say a few uh obscenities but needless to say though I mean
09:16it's so much easier though if they attach it onto the hand and they just mold the hand on the
09:19end of
09:19it it makes so much simpler it does add though a lot of extra weight on the front of the
09:24figure's body
09:25so like right now let's just remove the tentacle put it off to the side here we'll take one of
09:30the
09:30hands again we just want to hold on to the glove we don't want to lose that take the hand
09:35it's right over here we want to make sure that thumbs go at least in and plug that on the
09:40back
09:40or on the on the peg itself now again that adds a lot of extra weight on the figure's body
09:46to the point where I almost feel like I really don't want to have mr sinister displayed with
09:50something like this because not only are you adding stress to this peg the peg that's going to hold the
09:55hand in place but also long term too you're going to be adding weight and stress to the shoulder area
10:01and I would think that over time that that would be enough that these arms would develop looseness
10:05I like though that Mondo includes something like this but with just the amount of weight that goes
10:10behind the scenes of producing something like this in heavy plastic I just don't think honestly it's
10:15something that you can have long term with the figure unless unless you happen to have something
10:19like a post a stand piece that maybe can just help prop that up because you really don't want to
10:25have that be something that's going to cause stress to the figure over time mr sinister if I just
10:30get him to stand here for a second does also come include with a couple of swappable heads now the
10:35heads that he has he has the smiling face that's the head that comes out of the packaging with him
10:40if you like though just a sterner expression for mr sinister he has that as well I would probably be
10:47settled either displaying the figure with the smile or displaying the figure with the neutral expression
10:53if perhaps you also like the idea that he also has this head sculpt I like that this has also
10:58little stars like little energies coming out from his eyes it's a little bit different obviously from
11:04the head that he starts with just with that head being a smiling face and this one kind of being
11:08more of a screaming face you know you look at head sculpts like this and you look at all the
11:15other
11:15accessories though that Mondo includes with this figure this guy clocks in less than two hundred dollars
11:19to less than two hundred dollars for everything and we haven't even again looked at his cape just yet
11:24if you prefer though mr sinister be a little bit more aged the figure does also have the weathered
11:29face as well now I could never see myself ever displaying sinister with this face myself again I
11:36would probably settle more so with like this kind of head or the head that he has on the top
11:40of his
11:40head or top of the neck right now okay here's what I did want to talk about when it comes
11:45to
11:45mr sinister's cape you would probably go in there expecting that the cape is probably going to be a
11:51little bit more fragile I'll tell you this getting the figure out of the packaging I've removed the
11:55cape a couple of times I've put back on the figure's body a couple of times this is probably one
11:59of the
11:59reasons also why I mentioned that going back to the display stand had they curved it up just a little
12:04bit it would help to cradle the figure you definitely don't want this guy to fall with the
12:09way that just it's designed whether they had designed this in a more brittle plastic or a softer
12:13plastic there's a space here and there's a space here imagine if you will and I don't even want to
12:19think about this imagine if the figure was to fall back on this there's a little bit of give to
12:23the
12:23plastic itself but not that kind of give where you would not have to worry at all about the figure
12:28this does attach on the back of the figure's body now if you look on the back of sinister's body
12:32he has these two slots on the top you kind of can gauge it by the way that the cape
12:37angles
12:37so when you put the cape down see if I was to put it on this side the cape would
12:42go too far over in
12:43the middle you would want to have it here when you also put it onto the figure's body
12:46don't have it lean back like this because you'll find you'll have a hard time to get the cape in
12:52place rather though just bring it closer to the collar and then just kind of wiggle it back and
12:58forth now these are things that you're going to have a hard time kind of doing because you don't
13:02want to put a lot of pressure against the cape because again like you've only got this much space
13:07to work with you can kind of get a little closer to the peg or I've also found too if
13:13you sort of hold
13:14it from the sides resist any urge to push it from the top but just kind of wiggle it back
13:19in place
13:20now I think to myself what would have been an easier way to attach the cape because again like
13:25with mr sinister this is the kind of cape just by its design alone would be a very hard cape
13:31to keep
13:31intact I thought maybe like magnets maybe magnets could have worked too but you really would want
13:37to lunge this lunge this down far enough down in the back cavity of his torso any little bit that
13:43this sticks up there's more of a risk of the cape piece falling off and again we're just going to
13:48wiggle it back and forth here we go I would also say to what really when it comes to displaying
13:54this
13:54figure if you ever get around to wanting to change for example the head sculpt maybe take the cape off
14:00first before you put the head down in place because a lot of times again you really want to kind
14:04of
14:04hold the torso push the head down but there's not really a lot of space to work with around it
14:08because the way the cape is designed I say all this though also saying too that I'm a big fan
14:14of mr sinister he's actually my favorite villain of the x-men universe always really loved the design
14:19of the character but with that though of course goes the cautionary tale by attaching this on the back
14:23of his torso just again want to be careful that you're not putting pressure against this I like
14:27mondo's done at least a good enough service to this figure there's give to the plastic but not again
14:33that kind of give where you'd want to have the figure falling on himself because again like that's
14:38what you would have to work with what we're working with right now though again is the smiling face
14:42for mr sinister defaulted though out of the packaging again probably my favorite of the three heads
14:47four heads four heads that we actually get there's the neutral expression face for sinister one thing
14:53too like they've done with the rest of the body you can see that maybe on the side he does
14:57also have
14:57some cell shading so there's a little bit of shadowing there down the side of his face down the side
15:02of
15:02his torso as well of course he's got the diamond motif there on the front of his chest
15:06that striping also that he has all across his body it's a really cool design for mr sinister here
15:12some shadowing also there on the front of his belt as we work our way down to mr sinister has
15:18one of
15:18those clever designs where for reasons unknown they decide to kind of give him thigh boots and then he
15:23also has sort of like these elf shoes down below here and yet though adding all those things up makes
15:28for a rather interesting character not only though do you also have the shadowing but there's also some
15:33highlights in there as well all across the shoulder all across the bicep down the belt down the leg and
15:39even down the boot as well but as though you bang the figure i've already felt though that the cape
15:44has come loose just put the cape in there just a little bit more there we go yeah it is
15:53a great
15:53looking figure but with that i hate to say with great power comes great responsibility there is going
15:58to be a fair bit of responsibility when it comes to the upkeep of mr sinister definitely though
16:02make use of the display stand because the last thing you would want to do is have the figure
16:06falling backwards for his articulation mr sinister if you're familiar with the x-men 97 figures then
16:12mr sinister pretty much has that same level of possibility head's going to be on a ball joint
16:16so it allows the head to rotate back and forth it can look down and it can look up now
16:21because they
16:21had to rely on a seamless body here means that he doesn't have a secondary ball joint down below i
16:26don't
16:27think necessarily he loses anything by not having it you can still very easily move the head around
16:32up and down and technically too you could also rotate it around but obviously his high collar
16:36would get in the way of that top of the torso does have a ball joint just again be careful
16:41though
16:42of his wings i keep calling these wings you know his cape top of the torso does have a ball
16:46joint
16:47it moves up and down but it doesn't really honestly move that much though can get a little
16:52bit of a crunch going for it but it feels really tight probably a lot of it too is just
16:57the way
16:57they've sculpted the body the body is clearly though designed on the armor that he has in the
17:01comics in the cartoon but it doesn't give you really much space at all to get much going when
17:06it comes to the torso joint the abdomen actually moves out of those two things a lot easier you can
17:12move the arms forward and back you can also move them out i'm not going to twist the arm all
17:16the
17:16way around because just i don't want to bang the cape he has these shoulders so that will prevent
17:20anything more than a bend this high and for that same reason you can't really rotate the arm
17:26around but there is at least those softer plastic that they've used for the shoulders
17:30there's a swivel not so much though in the bicep the bicep actually is one piece to the shoulder
17:35but there is a swivel though down below in the in the forearm there is a single hinge only in
17:39the elbow
17:40the hands rotate all the way around and of course yeah you can hinge them back and forth too
17:44for his splits taking carefully though the legs they split out that far they also can be moved forward
17:52and back there is a swivel definitely more of a swivel here to the top of the thigh
17:56a double hinge on the knee and then there's the articulation down below here in the ankle not only
18:02will it allow the leg to move the foot to move up and down this way but an ankle rocker
18:06as well
18:08mr sinister does certainly look the parts but uh i would hope though that he stays uh without falling
18:14apart the one biggest worry that i really have with mr sinister is more so the cape i can't really
18:20fault
18:20necessarily by the designing of the talented team behind the scenes at mondo for creating mr
18:24sinister he again looks like he does in both the comics and the cartoon the only one downside to
18:30that though is the cape as you saw in this review i was very careful to put that on the
18:35back of his
18:35torso not putting too much pressure to the top of it because you don't want that to buckle and with
18:40also make sure this guy gets on a display stand as soon as you get him out of the box
18:44so that at
18:44least he's stable and in place he's not going to fall backward that's the last thing you really would
18:48want this figure to have and again i say this at the beginning of this review and i'll say this
18:52again
18:53too if i just spin this guy sideways there's not really a whole lot that the cradle from the stand
18:59holds in place for sinister that had maybe they just brought the stand out a little bit more
19:05curved it up a little bit more i know it would have made for a more visible peg of those
19:09little
19:09two prong pieces you'd see them though on the front of his of his groin area but at least though
19:14i think
19:14it would make the figure a little bit more stable because you know he looks fantastic and the last
19:18thing i would wait hate to do is come down one day and find that the figure has fallen backwards
19:22if that's the case my least of my worries would be the display stand my greater worry really would
19:27be the cape it's a great looking cape and i'd want to keep it that way getting him immediately
19:31out of the packaging as we're about to jump over to the turntable one last accessory i forgot to show
19:36you guys was mr sinister's shadow accessory it is more so something that's just going to sit
19:41alongside him on maybe on the shelf or where you have them currently displayed it's made though of
19:45generally softer plastic you can kind of see here there's definitely a little bit more give to the
19:50shadow accessory than there is perhaps to the cape like though his face you can see that they've
19:54painted the eyes in red here and the little diamond motif on the top if i just tilt this hopefully
20:00to
20:00the side where again the studio lights are able to capture it you can see that they've also gone in
20:04there and sculpted the mouth so he's got this sinister smile is a cool accessory again like if you had
20:09a
20:09little bit of light you probably i'm sure could shine something behind it to cast the light through
20:12it so it would look like it would glow it's not very big mind you it's only going to go
20:16really to
20:17about the knees or so of sinister but it's a cool accessory though that mondo would take the time to
20:21include as we get to the end of nathaniel essex i've got the figure currently displayed rotating on
20:26the rotisserie with one of his blast effects i don't know though if i would entertain the idea of
20:30having two with the amount of weighted plastic that they have on the ends of those hands and then times
20:36that by two you're also doubling the risk of this figure developing looseness in his wrists more
20:41looseness in his shoulders and at the bigger risk the figure either falling forward or even worse
20:46falling back there is a reason after all why mondo includes display stands with all their six scale
20:51figure releases but i would say with mr sinister here above all else there's even more of a reason
20:57why you would want to have this guy immediately displayed with the stand to ensure that the figure's
21:02cape is going to be intact the longer that you have this guy on the shelf the cape does attach
21:07on
21:07the back of his body and i will say it attaches fairly securely having the cape not necessarily
21:12falling off is a big problem for me but then like turning the figure kind of changing out the head
21:17sculpts these might be all things that you decide to do and then put the cape on as a second
21:22thought
21:22maybe not do it the first time he does have quite a lot of accessories the fact that this guy
21:27still
21:27clocks in at 265 dollars is unbelievable i'm not sure though why mondo was able to sell these figures
21:33as well as they do for the price that they do but for 265 dollars this guy has been very
21:38very limited
21:39quantities so if you guys are interested and a big fan of mr sinister like he is my favorite by
21:44far of
21:44the x-men villains if you agree with that and think that mr sinister is just the coolest cat around
21:50you may want to pick this guy up before like i said mondo sells out on him a big thank
