00:00They may be able to control the magic, but can they control the skies?
00:04Here's your retro look at the Hasbro Visionaries Knights of the Magical Light, Darkling Lord Skyclaw.
00:19Magical Dual Holographic Power Images add twice the battle energy to prey upon the enemy.
00:24Includes Mortrid, fully posable driver with three-dimensional holographic chest shield.
00:28I figured with Super 7's recent announcement of acquiring the license for Visionaries Knights of the Magical Light
00:33that perhaps it would be a perfect time to hop into my time machine and travel back to 1987.
00:38One of my favorite beloved toy lines of all time happens to be Visionaries Knights of the Magical Light.
00:43Not only was it a very short-lived cartoon, I feel often an overlooked cartoon, but it had some of
00:48the coolest toys around.
00:49In this review, we're going to be looking, though, at the Darkling Lord's Skyclaw, along with Pilot Mortrid.
00:54Now, of course, before we get down to looking at the gimmicks and the features of the Skyclaw and looking
00:59at Mortrid,
01:00we would, in fact, first, just because, again, we're traveling back to the past,
01:03doesn't mean, though, we don't follow the format of the present.
01:06We're going to take the tape measure. We're going to get things measuring.
01:08We'll start first with Cowardly Mortrid.
01:11Now, Mortrid, if you're looking at him, is only going to be standing.
01:13He's about your standard three and three-quarter inch figure.
01:16That comes also complete with an O-ring.
01:18That's going to work out to be a figure that's about, I would say, 10 centimeters tall.
01:22Then for its Skyclaw, now, the Skyclaw does have a little bit of assembly that's required.
01:26Now, this, I actually do have two versions of the Skyclaw.
01:29The box that you saw at the beginning of the video was, in fact, actually a partially sealed.
01:33It still has to be assembled, but all the parts and component pieces are still inside the box.
01:38And then I have a loose version of the Skyclaw, so we'll be looking at the loose one here.
01:42From the back of its end to the front of its spike or its point, you're looking at the Skyclaw
01:48being 12 inches in length or about 31 centimeters long.
01:53As for its height, going right to the very tippy top, you're looking five and a half inches or about
01:5814 centimeters tall.
01:59Now, I would also be a really crappy reviewer if not looking at a retro toy like this if I
02:04didn't bring in the box as well.
02:05So, we're just going to move over Mortrid here, front and the back here, front and center with the Skyclaw
02:11in the back.
02:11And let's just bring in the box.
02:13Now, again, the box is, could perhaps see better days, but at least it's got, you know, it's somewhat sealed.
02:20Mortrid, though, has kind of fallen in the back, but he's kind of still in there.
02:24On the front, of course, we've got the brand new artwork, the classic, I should say, artwork of the 1987
02:28toy line.
02:29We actually have Darkstorm in the back, which is actually funny because I'm going to use Darkstorm here for the
02:34example.
02:35Mortrid, though, is featured in the front.
02:36It does have, of course, the holographic, dual holographic images, which is, again, something that you would always expect with
02:42a Visionaries toy line.
02:43By the way, too, what was the price on this box?
02:46Now, I had ordered this.
02:47I bought this on eBay probably like 10, 15 years ago.
02:50At the time I'm looking at this, it says $26.99 on the back, though, of the box.
02:58Again, we have Mortrid featured on the front.
03:00Now, again, with these guys, they didn't have the powers of the summons with the staffs, so they were all
03:04the drivers.
03:05They would be able to power the machines.
03:07We were basically the regular Darkstorm, the regular Darkling lords, and the spectral lights wouldn't be able to do that.
03:12On the back, what's rather interesting also, too, about these is that despite being a pilot, they actually do also
03:18have a summons,
03:19which really is something you never saw at all in the cartoon.
03:22Mortrid never had the summons, in this case, a flight.
03:25Just to show you, though, I didn't actually cut out the file card here, but from Mortrid, it does say,
03:31This cynical villain specializes in mayhem and sabotage.
03:35He is the only lord able to control the awesome and elusive Skyclaw as it deceptively invades the Spectral Knight's
03:43territory.
03:43Mystical personality represented by the scurrying and deceiving Beetle.
03:47This allows him to trick his adversaries into letting him infiltrate base camps, secretly sabotaging anything he can touch.
03:55Which I always kind of thought it was interesting.
03:57The things that they could turn into.
03:59I mean, really, though, the Spectral Knights would all be in blue, and then the Darkling lords would all still
04:03be in green.
04:04So it's not like, really, though, he could have blended in with other scurrying, deceiving Beetles.
04:08His vehicle power, the scavenger-like vulture, transforms into an ominous flying dragon, increasing the Skyclaw's magical power.
04:17This is actually what I wanted to show you, though.
04:19The summons, though, for flight.
04:21Wings of steel shall ride the breeze, invade the air, the land, the seas.
04:26Which, again, was not ever something we saw in the series itself.
04:30Let's just move that out of the way, though.
04:31A pretty cool, though, looking box.
04:33And let's just bring back here the Skyclaw.
04:36Now, if you were to ask me, if anybody was interested, that is, one of your favorite vehicles of all
04:41time, it certainly would be the Skyclaw.
04:43I love Visionaries' Knights of the Magical Light.
04:45I love, love the cartoon.
04:48Very short-lived series, though.
04:50And, again, one of the biggest problems, I think, with Knights of the Magical Light and Visionaries was just the
04:53fact that the price of the vehicles and the holograms, I think, made for a much more expensive production of
04:59toys.
04:59And, perhaps, one of the reasons why the toy line didn't survive as well as it did.
05:04For, of course, the pilot that we get here, we get Mortrid.
05:08Now, Mortrid, though, is an O-ring figure.
05:10So, he's very similar to that of a G.I. Joe.
05:12The O-ring is inside and looks like it's still pretty pristine.
05:16Now, I can't do this with some toys.
05:20Like, if my He-Mans, for example, if the rubber bands broke inside, you can get, like, the replacements.
05:24I know they would be a little bit harder to replace.
05:26At least, though, with these.
05:27It's generally, though, you'd be able to pop the back off for G.I. Joes.
05:31But, unfortunately, though, with Visionaries, you have a harder time because a lot of these ones don't actually have screw
05:36holes.
05:36You can even see here the other example of Darkstorm doesn't have a screw hole on the back.
05:41So, it might even be harder for these guys.
05:43Even, despite having an O-ring like a G.I. Joe, I think you probably still have a next-to
05:47-impossible time to try to replace them.
05:50For, of course, the detailing here for Mortrid, I think he looks fantastic.
05:53It looks very much like he does, though, in the cartoon, a very cowardly, you know, henchman to Darkstorm.
06:00He does, of course, in Come and Clue with a helmet.
06:02The helmet is in pretty good condition.
06:04Most of these Knights of the Magical Light, like the Visionaries figures, for example,
06:09I've kept them in somewhat as good of condition as I can keep them,
06:12usually keeping them in, like, little tote containers with all of their accessories.
06:15So, over the time that I've had them, figures like Mortrid, for example, have held out pretty good.
06:20The helmet itself is made of a little more of a softer plastic.
06:24One thing, though, I really don't like about the helmets for Visionaries is trying to, though, put them on the
06:29faces.
06:29I would really feel like I'm scraping the face.
06:32It hasn't happened just yet.
06:33But I'm sure, though, the countless times of putting on the helmet, taking off the helmet,
06:38eventually, though, I'm sure that's going to cause a little bit of scrapage on the front of poor Mortrid's face.
06:42But just to put the helmet on here for a second, it's a pretty tight fit.
06:46And you just pop it on top of his head like that.
06:48It's very large.
06:49I mean, that's usually the territory that gets covered here with the Darkling Lords.
06:52As the other one, again, I'm going to be using as the example.
06:55Someone has to sit in the back, after all.
06:56Here we have the leader, Darkstorm, voiced by the late Chris Latta,
07:00who was also responsible, of course, for Starscream and Cobra Commander as well.
07:03He had certainly, I think, the more regular voice.
07:06Like, if you were to speak to Chris Latta,
07:07I think his regular voice probably would have been Darkstorm from Visionaries.
07:10But again, he also does come in clear with his helmet, so we can just go ahead and put that
07:13on.
07:15Both of them, of course, do have their totem staffs here on the front.
07:18It may be a little harder to make this one out, but he does actually have the beetle.
07:22Can you see that?
07:24There you go.
07:25There's the beetle on the front.
07:28Now, these you could also pop off to.
07:30I don't know really why you would want to pop these off,
07:32but if you wanted to, these just untap and you would just slide them off.
07:37But I think overall, like, his durability, he's held up pretty well over the years.
07:42The articulation, by the way, on these figures, I'll just go ahead and remove the helmet right now.
07:45He also comes with a weapon, too.
07:47He's got somewhat of a ball joint for the head, so you can move the head around, up and down.
07:51And, yeah, you can turn the head, but only just a little bit.
07:54He does have the benefit of, of course, the O-ring, so you can move that around, twist the waist.
07:59You can rotate the arms, bring the arms out.
08:01You can also bend the elbow, which is good.
08:04And no articulation in the hand.
08:05I don't think it necessarily needs that, either.
08:07You can split the legs.
08:08Legs are a little loose.
08:10I know, certainly, though, with some of the O-ring figures, that comes with the territory after a while.
08:14Like, after years, things like this will develop looseness.
08:17Legs move forward and back.
08:18He has a bend at the knee.
08:20And peg holes on the bottoms of his feet.
08:22He doesn't necessarily need the peg holes, at least because he doesn't have pegs for the sky claw.
08:26Oh, and actually, one other thing, too.
08:28Mortar does also come in with this little dagger piece.
08:31This dagger just fits into his hand.
08:35And the Darkling Lords, all their weapons and staffs would be in gold.
08:39And Spectral Knights would have them all in silver.
08:41We'll just go ahead and fit that into his hand.
08:46I can't think of the last time I actually put this into his hand.
08:48It certainly has been years.
08:49So he has that.
08:50And we can go ahead and put the helmet back on him.
08:53I just don't like, again, like, I always feel like I'm scraping the faces when I'm putting their helmets on.
08:58But this Mortarid, nice looking figure.
09:00I like the coloring, too.
09:02Spectral Knights usually would have been, like, more light blue, kind of reds and stuff like that.
09:07Whereas the Darkling Lords generally would have been more like purples, the blues.
09:10Or in this case, with Darkstorm, would have been, like, more green and blue.
09:15So we'll go and put him right over here.
09:17Even though he doesn't really belong, he doesn't come with this vehicle necessarily.
09:20I'm just going to want to put him there because he will be sitting in the back.
09:23Some Assembly usually is the territory that you can be covering when it comes to any 80s toys, whether it
09:27be G.I. Joe, whether it be Inhumanoids.
09:29Another one of my favorite toy lines.
09:31I really should get around to re-reviewing those.
09:33But nothing really for me beats that of Visionaries.
09:37Skyclaw Top 5.
09:38We're talking Top 5 favorite vehicles of all time.
09:42Skyclaw is right up there for me.
09:45Skyclaw, again, does require a little bit of assembly.
09:47But because, again, like, this one is the one that I bought loose, all the matter of building this thing
09:52was already taken over by the person that obviously had first purchased the toy.
09:56You can maybe see, too, that it does have the hologram stickers on the side.
10:00So you've got that of a dragon.
10:02It's kind of more of a dragon, and it's like a bird of prey.
10:05So you've got the bird of prey.
10:06Hopefully you guys can see that okay.
10:08And then it flips then to the dragon.
10:12And we also would have seen this also in the cartoon, too, where these would have projected out, and then
10:16the dragons would have been chasing the Spectral Knights.
10:19So, like, even the vehicles themselves were just as deadly as the staffs that the, you know, the Spectral Knights
10:24or the Darkling Lords would have wielded.
10:26Something else that's really cool, too, is speaking of the staffs, there is storage space on the back to hold
10:31the staffs.
10:32And while the Omortra didn't come included with one, I just happen to have a couple right here.
10:36This, I think, is Cravex's, with, of course, the Summon of Fear.
10:40And this is Darkstorm, which would be the Summon of Decay.
10:44Again, I think, like, the Holograms have held up okay, depending, of course...
10:49Ah, there we go.
10:50There's the Summon of Decay.
10:53And, of course, the Summon of Fear.
10:55The staffs themselves all will be held in hands.
10:57Obviously, they're only going to be held by the non-piloted Drivers.
11:00So all of them would have the benefits of the Summons.
11:03Now, we can go ahead and take the staffs.
11:05The staffs will just fit into these open slots here in the back.
11:08So we'll put in Darkstorms.
11:10After all, Darkstorm's going to be riding along with Mordred.
11:13And we can take Cravex's, even though he's not here right now.
11:16And we'll just also put in his staff.
11:20And they fit okay.
11:21I mean, some of them fit a little bit better than others.
11:24There we go.
11:25Just make sure it's all the way on there.
11:26So there's a little bit of storage space to keep the staffs.
11:29Of course, if you want to have it displayed that way.
11:31Or if you are one that still likes to play with your toys.
11:36You can have them, of course, flying around with the staffs on the back.
11:39The one thing I really didn't like, though, about Visionaries was the fact that
11:42they could only really use their staffs once.
11:44Once they used the Summon, the Summon would be gone.
11:46And then they'd have to go back to Mirklin and recharge their staffs.
11:50And usually it came at the price that Mirklin would have them go do something for him
11:54to recharge their staffs.
11:56I always really felt like they could probably only use the staff once.
11:59And then they'd have to wait a while.
12:01Maybe like a day.
12:02Half a day or so.
12:03Just to have it recharged.
12:05I feel like having them have to go always back to Mirklin's lair
12:08just seemed like there was so much unnecessary need
12:11that they could only use the Summon once.
12:13And they'd have to go back and recharge it.
12:15Anyways, though, we're going to go ahead and just take these staffs off.
12:17Because it might make things a little bit easier to show you guys
12:19everything that's going on here for the Skyclaw.
12:21It is, after all, a two-seater.
12:23So being that he is the pilot, he's the only one that'd be able to control this.
12:27Lexor, I feel like Lexor would probably be able to pilot as well this.
12:31He would, of course, be the pilot for the Dagger Assault.
12:34But you would just take yourself your...
12:36Let's just actually take the Dagger out of Mortrid's hands.
12:41And we'll just bend the legs here a bit.
12:43And slide Mortrid into the front.
12:47There we go.
12:48Get them all in there of the Skyclaw.
12:51Now, there isn't necessarily any controls.
12:53I mean, I guess there's no real stickers either.
12:56You kind of get at least an idea of what the inside cockpit would look like.
13:00There's also this gold piece right here.
13:02It may not look like it's doing anything just yet.
13:04But that's going to work for the gimmick that's on the front.
13:06So two gimmicks that are on at least the Skyclaw is the fact that you can separate the wings.
13:11And you have cannons located on either side of the wings.
13:14The other one, though, is that there's sort of more of a battering ram that pops out the front.
13:18And it also ejects on the top a secondary laser cannon.
13:22So just to operate those, first things first, you're going to take these and you're going to slide them out.
13:29And sometimes, though, while you are sliding them out, like this one just happened to do,
13:32you can see kind of the way that it attaches.
13:35It just attaches by almost like a cross-shaped, well, peg connector.
13:42But we're just going to bring this out a little bit.
13:44It might even be easier if I just slide this out first and just pop that back in place.
13:49Now, despite having this in pretty good condition, there are a few little things, hiccups after all,
13:53that will happen with old vintage toys.
13:56The only one knock-on wood that has happened for me with this original Skyclaw
13:59is just this side wing always pops off.
14:03So again, we're just going to bring this out just a little bit.
14:05Maybe it might even be easier if I just hold on to it and just plug it on the end.
14:10Is that going to work? I think that's going to work.
14:12So we're going to bring up then the other wing.
14:14And then these little cannons can come up.
14:18So right away then, he can shoot anything that's above him.
14:20It really isn't anything from the Spectral Knight's standpoint that can be flying around
14:24other than just the little hover pods that come with the capture terrier,
14:28which might be something that we may also look at in an upcoming video.
14:31Of course, there is also a gun turret here on the back, too.
14:33This can spin back and forth.
14:35It's a little loose, but not to the point where I really am worried about it.
14:38It does also hinge up and down there as well.
14:40So if you want to take yourself Darkstorm.
14:43Now, Darkstorm, I did say earlier that there are technically no pegs.
14:46There are really ones.
14:47There are only really pegs on the back here where you can plug your figure onto.
14:51So we'll just kind of put Darkstorm right here.
14:53He can pilot the cannon.
14:57I might maybe make a better job of doing that if I was to attach it onto the pegs.
15:00The pegs are really, can you see them?
15:02They're on the inside right there.
15:03And then the last thing that happens here with the Skyclaw is that you can take the back button here
15:09and you've got to push it forward.
15:11And when you push it forward, what it ends up doing, though, is it sort of ejects the front point
15:16and then it pops, it springs up the laser cannon.
15:19So again, we're just going to bring that forward.
15:21There you go.
15:22And again, this comes forward and now you've got yourself a second hidden cannon.
15:27So it's quite ready for firepower.
15:29I mean, obviously, there's very little that's going to stand toe to toe with this.
15:33Again, the closest thing I would say, I guess one thing, too.
15:36Let's just put this down here for a second.
15:38Just to show you guys, though, a size comparison.
15:40I also happen to have myself the Lancer Cycle.
15:44The Lancer Cycle here for the Spectral Knights.
15:46Just to kind of give you guys an idea.
15:49Those are like the smaller grade vehicles.
15:51The Skyclaw and the Lancer Cycle.
15:53And then the medium or the larger scale would then be the Capture Chariot and the Dagger Assault.
15:58I also have the Dagger Assault.
15:59Maybe I'll get around to reviewing that at some point as well.
16:04One thing I didn't mention, though, is that on the bottom of the Skyclaw,
16:08technically there is two.
16:09Some wheels.
16:10There's wheels here in the front.
16:12And there's two wheels on the back.
16:13And there's also one at the very back, too.
16:15So if you did want to, you could also roll this around.
16:18But most of its life, I would imagine, would be spent out in the skies.
16:22Again, these would just slide back in place.
16:25And then you can also, for this, want to just kind of bring this down first.
16:29So pull this back.
16:31And when you pull it back, you want to make sure that the cannon is just tucked inside
16:35so that the point of the front of the Skyclaw covers over top of it.
16:40Yeah, it's a fun vehicle, though.
16:42So, you know, again, this might be lost on some of the newer viewers that are looking
16:45at this right now.
16:46And they're thinking, like, why are you looking at an 80s toy?
16:48I'm looking at an 80s toy because I loved 80s toys, obviously, as a kid.
16:51I mean, this is the best thing going.
16:53Like, just again, like the artwork that they would have had on these Visionaries'
16:56Knights of the Magical Light toys.
16:58Now, over my years of collecting, I've been able, lucky enough, to find some of these
17:02at a pretty good-looking price.
17:04When I first bought, I'm just going to bring back here the box, when I first bought the
17:09Skyclaw, I seem to remember buying it loose like this.
17:12And I kind of said to myself, well, I want to get also, let's bring that up a little bit,
17:16I want to also be able to get, at some point, a sealed version of the Skyclaw.
17:19Now, again, the flap is really the only thing that's telling me that this has been opened.
17:23And, like, looking inside, everything is still brand new and pristine.
17:26I still have to essentially build it if I wanted to get another Skyclaw.
17:29And, again, one of the reasons why I wanted to have a loose Skyclaw, and then one that
17:34was still sealed.
17:35I have also the Capture Chariot.
17:37The Capture Chariot has been opened, but I have the original box for it, so maybe, maybe,
17:41maybe we might even look at that in an upcoming review.
17:43And I also have a Lancer Cycle that's still sealed.
17:47So, the Lancer Cycle that I just brought back in, which happens to be right over here.
17:51I have a loose version of this, which is this one right here.
17:54And I also, I have a sealed version that you never know, we might also look at in an upcoming
17:59review.
18:00The main reason, again, why I wanted to look at these, not only is it a blast for the
18:04past, for me at least, nostalgia overload, but also, too, because, again, Super 7 has
18:08announced that they're going to be picking up the licensing for Visionaries' Knights of
18:11the Magical Light.
18:12I go in with the lowest of low expectations.
18:15I've already been burned by Super 7, not only with The Simpsons, but also G.I.
18:20Joe, too.
18:21I was really hoping, though, that Super 7 was going to release a whole line of larger
18:25scale Ultimate G.I.
18:26Joes, and that doesn't really seem to be the case.
18:28In fact, the irony of all that, though, is that Super 7 seems to be going more back to
18:32the idea of the O-Rings, which, for a nostalgic vintage collector like myself, I certainly can't
18:39fault the fact that there's collectors out there that are excited to get the obscure
18:42characters in the original O-Ring designs.
18:45I'm hoping, though, that we are going to be getting, like, larger Ultimate versions of
18:49Visionaries' Knights of the Magical Light, where, again, we have the Spectral Knights,
18:52we have the Darkling Lords, full scale, with, again, their Totem Summons, that would be
18:56great.
18:57So, like, for example, Mortrid would come with a little scurrying beetle.
19:02You know, again, like, Mollusk, for example, like Darkstorm, I think, turns into the Mollusk,
19:06so you could have, like, a larger version of that.
19:09Leoric would be able to turn into Lion.
19:10If they could include, for example, the Summons, the Totems that would then go with them, I
19:15think probably the harder one would be, like, the Summons for the Staffs.
19:18So, like, again, like, the Summons of Fear, for example, probably Summons, probably a
19:21Fear would not have been the best one to describe, but even, like, the Summons of Destruction,
19:26I can't think that they're going to be making a large, full-scale Destruction Beast, because
19:30that'd be incredibly large and probably super expensive as well.
19:34At the very least, though, one thing I'm going in this with at least the hope that if
19:38Super 7 has decided to pick up the license for Visionaries' Knights of the Magical Light,
19:42that we will be, again, getting the Ultimate figures with their Totems, and maybe even
19:47the smaller Summons for, like, knowledge and wisdom, maybe things like that they could include
19:51with just the attachment pieces that go on to the end of the Staff.
19:54As you probably can already tell, as you probably have been able to hear, I'm very passionate
19:59when it comes to Visionaries, and certainly hope, though, that Super 7 are able to do something
20:03more with them than what they did with the G.I.
20:05Joes and the Simpsons.
20:07As we now wrap up the review for this retro toy of a Visionary's Skyclaw, it did dawn
20:11on me that I called it Lexor, where as though the pilot of the Dagger Assault was Recon.
20:17Recon.
20:17But I did wonder, though, if Recon could in fact have flown the Skyclaw, and vice versa,
20:23if Mortar would have been able to pilot the Dagger Assault.
20:25If there was, though, a time in the episodes where they did do that, it's probably something
20:29that's just escaping me right now.
20:31What's also interesting about Visionaries is it's yet to ever get a physical media release.
20:35I think the closest thing to that is I think there was a European DVD that was released
20:40of Visionaries.
20:41Outside of that, you probably could pick yourself up a bootleg, maybe on places like eBay, that
20:45would have the complete episode run of Visionaries.
20:48But it was a very short episode run, and certainly wasn't long enough for how cool the cartoon
20:52actually was.
20:53How cool, though, is the Skyclaw?
20:55It's pretty cool.
20:56Still, I feel like it's probably one of my top five favorite vehicles of all time.
21:01Between the look of it, it's sort of got more of a sleek, triangular kind of design to it.
21:06Plus, too, it's got some storage on the back to store the staffs.
21:10It's got a way, as well, to have a co-pilot.
21:12Of course, a backseat driver would be that of Darkstorm.
21:15Yeah, it's just a really neat-looking vehicle.
21:18Now, there was only, again, four vehicles released for Visionaries.
21:21They had plans, though, for a second wave, and it just never came to fruition.
21:25But at least, though, the first wave consisted of the Lancer Cycle and the Capture Chariot
21:29for that of the Spectral Knights.
21:31And then for the Darkling Lords, of course, was the Skyclaw that we looked at in this review
21:34and the very large, very imposing Dagger Assault, which was piloted by Recon, not Lexor.
21:41What do you guys think of Skyclaw?
21:42Let me know down below in the comments section.
21:43Do you have, by the way, any of the original Visionaries toys?
21:47Let me know if you do down below.
21:49Maybe, though, with this nostalgia kind of pumping through my bloodstream right now,
21:53maybe, I don't know, maybe we might also look at the Capture Chariot,
21:56maybe even as well the Lancer Cycle, and hey, you never know,
22:00we might also look at the Darkling Lords Dagger Assault.
22:03If you guys did enjoy this video and certainly want to see more like this,
22:06do it as well and throw it a like.
22:07And yeah, if you guys do want to stick around for more so,
22:10I certainly do hope so,
22:11hit the subscribe and, of course, turn on that bell.
