00:00 Oh great, Hami's got to figure out his suit while fighting someone else's.
00:04 Here's a look at McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse, the Blue Beetle movie, Charapax.
00:11 An experienced lieutenant and war veteran, Charapax Guatemalan with inscrutable Mayan
00:40 features hardened by his 50 years in military demeanor is now bionically enhanced right
00:45 hand man of Victoria Cord.
00:47 Having endured the experimentations of Cord Industries, Charapax is able to unleash virtually
00:52 indestructible weaponry at will but underneath the heavy armor he's struggling to mask the
00:58 scars of his past battles.
01:01 Forget about the weapons that he wields, Conrad is a walking weapon.
01:05 Before we get a closer look at the Blue Beetle movie, Charapax, let me go ahead and thank
01:08 the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did provide the sample we could have a look at.
01:12 A little late on this one but still we're going to grab the tape measure and see how
01:14 tall the figure stands.
01:16 First though in inches, if you really count the top, I suppose that would be the highest
01:20 point on the figure, then Charapax stands about nine and a quarter inches in height.
01:25 If you though are one that prefers to have your measurements up to the top of the head
01:28 of the figure, then the figure is only about eight inches in height and that works out
01:32 to be a figure that's roughly again going by only these antennas on the back of the
01:35 figure's body, about 23 centimeters tall.
01:39 If it also helps as well, we can bring in the earlier looked at Blue Beetles.
01:43 This one to the right is the one that's going to be on this side of the figure's body if
01:46 you're looking at it from the screen.
01:48 The Blue Beetle that has the wings you can see is only going about to the shoulder area
01:52 and really nothing does then change when we bring in the other Jaime Reyes.
01:55 I did say in his reviews I called him Jamie but his real name is actually Jaime Reyes.
02:00 But then if you were to bring in say the regular Blue Beetle who really isn't any bit different
02:04 than the one that has the wings, again it's only going to about maybe the shoulder section
02:08 or so of Karapax.
02:11 Now I did say earlier the weapons that he wields, the irony in all that is the fact
02:14 that Karapax doesn't come in clue with anything else than swappable hands, a display stand
02:18 and a trading card.
02:20 Looking first at the trading card, it seems to be using sort of that illustration design
02:24 that we saw similarly when we looked at Jaime's cards as well.
02:28 I do like the look of these at least so it's not using source material.
02:31 Source material in the sense that it's not using a still from the movie.
02:34 I actually like that instead they sort of went with more of an illustration of the character.
02:39 Karapax of course listed down below that is the fact that he's also appearing in the
02:42 Blue Beetle movie.
02:44 Which I have actually will say I did enjoy the Blue Beetle movie I think more than I
02:47 liked the Flash movie.
02:49 Did you guys prefer Blue Beetle more or did you prefer the Flash more?
02:52 Let me know down below in the comments section.
02:54 Spin though around the real name is Conrad Karapax.
02:57 He's one of those villains of course that just decides to use his last name as the main
03:00 character's the villain's name.
03:02 I would probably have changed the name myself so that nobody just simply looks it to the
03:05 mail and says oh hey the guy who's got his electric bill that's being delivered to his
03:09 house just happens to also have the last name Karapax.
03:12 I'd probably change my name a little bit.
03:14 But you can see as well that there's a paragraph read you can stop and read for yourself.
03:18 It happens to be the same thing I read at the beginning of the review as well.
03:21 Let's move that to the side.
03:22 The figure also comes included with a display stand.
03:25 Judging by again like the sizing of the figure and how big his feet are, I don't think it's
03:28 that far removed to include a display stand.
03:31 I don't think it really necessarily need one of those large display stands because again
03:34 like even though it's a big sized figure it doesn't have overly sized big large boat sized
03:39 shoes.
03:40 I really think like this display stand is fine and good for the type of figure that
03:42 we're actually getting here.
03:44 You got once again the DC logo printed down below here and of course you got the one peg
03:48 up to the far corner that can plug into the under boots of either one of boots of Karapax.
03:54 Slide that to the side.
03:55 The figure also comes included with some swappable hands.
03:58 Again I would have probably hoped to have used the plastic.
04:01 Not that I can really speak for the people working behind the scenes at McFarlane Toys
04:04 and where they decide to designate the plastic material.
04:08 But instead of maybe getting these hands I would have really loved it they could have
04:10 used the hands maybe use some weapons or something that they figure could have come included
04:14 with.
04:15 The weapons though at least the hands not really being weapons the hands themselves
04:19 are molded well in kind of a black plastic.
04:22 The thing about the hands though is that they're really hard to change out on the figure just
04:26 because once we pick the figure up you'll see right away his fist that he has right
04:30 now is so encapsulated by all the molding of the forearms around it that's really hard
04:35 to kind of get in there and yank the hand out the first time.
04:39 Having already done it a couple of times on these hands it's a little bit now easier but
04:42 the first time you do it you really have to struggle because there's really not a lot
04:45 to hold on to.
04:46 I'm just going to go ahead and remove the hand for right now.
04:48 We're going to then replace it with the relaxed hands and again that'll just plug in place.
04:53 These hands are actually a lot easier to pull for the obvious reasons that there's just
04:55 a lot more finger to pull onto and again you can remove and change the hands that way.
05:00 But that's the only accessories sad to say that come included with Karapax.
05:03 Again I would have liked if he could have come included with something else as well.
05:06 I'm not necessarily meaning like a swappable head sculpt maybe this guy will see a future
05:10 down the road of getting a gold release where he may have of course Conrad Karapax's alternate
05:15 head sculpt and then you can just swap it out simply with the head sculpt that's here.
05:19 Head sculpt wise for what we get here it's a really interesting looking design character.
05:24 Very heavily influenced of course Karapax was actually way back in the day long even
05:28 before Hammy adopted the role of Blue Beetle.
05:31 I think it was actually around the earlier days of the previous Blue Beetle.
05:35 Of course he has changed his design over the many years that he's appeared in the comics.
05:40 I think at one point when he was battling Hammy in the comics he was running off of
05:43 steam.
05:44 Why was that even a good idea?
05:46 But the design of the character at least from the movie definitely has more like an Iron
05:49 Man design to it.
05:50 I sort of like the way they've sculpted the eye to have sort of like this V-shaped formation.
05:55 The coloring is also handled well here.
05:57 You've got some yellow some additional orange that's added in there as well just to add
06:01 a little bit of a departure so it's not just straight yellow.
06:03 It looks like they definitely did apply some really decent paint on the figure.
06:07 That same yellow and orange as I try to get my finger out of the way is also shared by
06:11 the coloring that he has also here on the shoulders as well as the back struts here.
06:15 These large pieces that stick out the back of the figure's body.
06:18 There really is some nice use of this kind of brownish burgundy color that they've used
06:22 all across the figure's body.
06:24 Throughout that though you can see like there's little indications and some little accented
06:28 areas that are also added in there in the orange as well.
06:31 The base color is mostly just the black but again like the way they painted the figure
06:34 from head to toe looks fantastic.
06:37 You can see also as well the way they've sculpted the arms.
06:40 There's again a lot of plastic being at play here.
06:43 A lot of plastic going into this mold and it also equals a figure that for his size
06:47 really there's a fair bit of weight going on with him.
06:51 While the back of these don't actually move around they do again have some really nice
06:55 sculpted detail.
06:56 You can see as well the way they've sculpted the back of the figure's neck also as well
07:00 and while though these don't move it's nice to see at least that the shoulders do.
07:04 So if you wanted to play around with these you can also rotate these around as well.
07:08 It's looking like he's about ready to fire something at the Blue Beetle.
07:13 So I like there's a little bit of poseability.
07:14 That certainly will also come in handy as well when it comes to really moving the figure
07:17 around.
07:18 The fact that you can actually take these shoulders and move them around as they're
07:21 on their own independent ball joint peg.
07:24 Speaking of the figure's articulation starting first with the head sculpt.
07:27 The head is very generously afforded a ball joint.
07:30 You can see that not only does it move well it moves up and down but also can rock back
07:35 and forth as well.
07:36 I thought the figure may have had also a neck joint but it's not the case.
07:39 You can see like the neck is basically just sculpted the rest of the figure's torso but
07:43 still though the head does rotate all the way around.
07:46 It does look up and down and also back and forth as well.
07:50 I don't know why though looking at Carapax it reminds me of something I would have seen
07:53 in the Disney film The Black Hole.
07:56 Am I really the only one that maybe thinks...
07:58 Remember those red robots that were in...
08:01 Anybody remember that?
08:02 The Black Hole?
08:03 How far back am I dating myself?
08:06 I think it was like a mid 80s movie.
08:09 Anyways though the articulation also has that in the abdomen area so the torso you can rotate
08:13 back and forth this way up and down but a little further from that I was surprised to
08:17 see that he actually had a secondary ball joint.
08:20 I honestly think that this would have been more than enough but still they managed to
08:23 pack in there a secondary ball joint right at the base of the abdomen right there.
08:28 As for the arms the arms do move forward and back.
08:30 They obviously move out.
08:32 The figure's elbow I really think it's smart the way they handled the joint here.
08:36 If you look at it from the forearm standpoint it doesn't really actually look like there's
08:40 any bit of a hinge there.
08:41 I would imagine just you'd be able to swivel it back and forth but if you look though real
08:44 closely you can see that there's a hinge right there if I get my fingernail out of the way
08:49 where you can actually bend the elbow.
08:51 Really nice little hidden area of articulation.
08:53 Of course the hands do rotate back and forth.
08:56 Mileage may vary depending on which hand you use.
08:58 I mean obviously if you're going to use the fist for example little to no movement.
09:01 I mean obviously it moves but it's just really hard to get your own hand in there to start
09:05 moving the smaller hands of Karapaks.
09:08 As for the legs the legs do split out.
09:09 They're on ratcheted joints.
09:10 Again really surprised to see how much the legs split.
09:13 Again as far as they do.
09:15 You can take the legs and move them forward.
09:16 You can move them back.
09:17 A swivel at the top of the thigh.
09:19 The figure has a double hinge on the knee.
09:21 Nice to see that.
09:22 He also has some decent articulation.
09:24 Really strong ratcheted joint here.
09:26 Not only in his ankle this way but you can also rock it back and forth and the figure
09:29 does have again toe articulation.
09:31 Mentioned already the figure does also have pegs on the underside of his feet.
09:34 So again you want to use yourself to display stand.
09:36 Balancing wise the figure doesn't seem to have too much of an issue when it comes to
09:40 really standing properly.
09:41 Of course then for comparison's sake let's bring back in Hemires.
09:44 The course the Blue Beetle at the time that this movie is coming around.
09:48 Yeah again I really like the look of these.
09:50 I had to wait a little longer unfortunately just with all the other things I was looking
09:53 at here on this channel to really get back to looking at the Blue Beetle movie stuff.
09:56 Just recently re-watching the Blue Beetle.
09:58 I actually had more fun I would say watching the Blue Beetle movie than I did watching
10:02 the Flash movie.
10:03 It seems with every subsequent watch of the Flash I dislike it a little bit more.
10:07 Whereas the Blue Beetle I actually really thought it was a fun movie.
10:10 Sort of an Iron Man junior if you will.
10:12 And sort of like how Iron Man had the Iron Monger being somebody that really kind of
10:16 inherited that same similar armor.
10:19 Also was the case here with Conrad Karapax.
10:21 He had sort of a larger bigger more meaner build to the Blue Beetle body.
10:25 And again it's a really interesting figure that translated extremely well here to plastic
10:29 form.
10:30 What I really liked about Karapax was the fact that the character wasn't a movie created
10:34 villain.
10:35 That would be fine and good but it's always nice to be going back to the older pages of
10:38 the comics.
10:39 And actually Karapax first debuted in Blue Beetle #1 from 1986.
10:44 Mind you though he wasn't battling Hammy at the time.
10:46 Instead he was battling the Blue Beetle at the time which was Ted Kord.
10:50 Karapax has made then several appearances since.
10:52 Not only battling Ted Kord but then also battling Hammy Rays later on in the series run.
10:57 Now of course the elaborate more costume that he gets here in the movie looks much more
11:01 fancier than maybe some of the suits he would have had in the original pages of the comics.
11:05 I do like the look of this suit.
11:06 It definitely resonates a little more like an Iron Man look to it.
11:09 Which goes without saying obviously anyone that's in a mech suit usually always is recognized
11:13 right away as being that kind of Iron Man looking suit.
11:17 The V formation shape that he has on the front of his helmet really kind of gives him a
11:22 sinister look.
11:23 And the real nice use of colors that they've added to this figure.
11:26 You can really tell that they've put a lot of time and a lot of effort to paint the figure
11:30 from head to toe.
11:32 All in all though it's a really interesting looking figure.
11:34 It's also one of those cases too where I feel like even if you didn't really necessarily
11:37 like Blue Beetle or maybe even haven't even seen the movie, he's an interesting enough
11:42 character to pick up just from the design alone.
11:44 Once again a big thank you to the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did provide the sample
11:48 of the Blue Beetle, Conrad Karapax.
11:51 Although when he's a villain he only goes by Karapax.
11:53 I think that's still a bad idea.
11:55 What do you guys think of the figure?
11:56 Let me know down below in the comment section.
11:58 And between the two I guess live action DC films we've gotten recently, which one did
12:02 you think was a better movie?
12:04 Blue Beetle or The Flash?
12:06 We'll see how many people weigh in down below in the comment section.
12:08 Also as well if you guys enjoyed this video, hit it with a like.
