00:01I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not going down like
00:05pond chasing bluegills and tommy cods. This shark swallow you whole. Little shaking, little
00:09tenderizing, and down you go. Here's a look at the brand new NECA toys. This is the Jaws
00:1350th Anniversary Ultimate Quint Action Figure.
00:30Celebrate 50 years of Jaws with NECA. Considered one of the greatest achievements in film, the classic
00:421975 Steven Spielberg thriller paved the way for what would become the summer blockbuster. The
00:47iconic character Sam Quinn is now available as an ultimate action figure. The headstrong captain
00:51of the orca hunts the shark until his breeze leads to his bloody demise. Stands at seven-inch scale,
00:56the figure includes multiple interchangeable heads, hands, and arms for an alternate look,
01:01plus gloved hands, machete, can, crush can, rifle, and harpoon gun. You'll have to excuse these city
01:06hands of mine as I take the tape measure to see how tall the ultimate Quint stands. No, by the way,
01:10I've not been counting money all my life. The figure, though, of Quint is going to stand at seven inches
01:15in height. He does. You can see it for yourself. That's going to translate, though, to a figure that's
01:1918 centimeters tall. First Quint from NECA toys? No, not at all. In fact, actually, we did get ourselves a
01:26retrocloth release of him, currently to the left. And on to the right, though, we did get ourselves
01:30cough-em-up, cough-em-up. We did get ourselves, though, a Toonie Tares release of Quint's. I had
01:35displayed on the shelf inside the mouth, though, of the shark. The shark actually was only just a part
01:40of it, and then you got yourself like a little dorsal fin that you kind of had to kind of display
01:43a little further back from the shark. Speaking, though, of sharks, I've been trying to get my hands
01:48on the large-sized Bruce next to impossible. Most of the sites that have them listed currently have
01:54them as pre-orders. I guess I could probably also check online places like eBay to see if I can get
01:58my hands on that one, because that would certainly like to be, that would certainly like to have one
02:01of those as part of my collection. Speaking of collection, boy, does Quint ever have quite the
02:04collection of things that come included with him. The figure does have three swappable heads.
02:08Technically, two of them are rolling away right here. The figure does have two ways of displaying
02:12him with his hands, gloved or otherwise. And the figure does have quite a lot of accessories to hold
02:16in those hands. Like, for example, the figure does come included with a couple of beer cans.
02:20It's one can looks possibly full. The other one looks like it's been crumpled up, as we saw in
02:25the film. I think Robert Shaw has been known, though, during the filming of that movie to be
02:30probably drinking quite a lot of these. Maybe not necessarily this brand, but I think Shaw was
02:34drinking quite a bit. He does have, though, gripping hands to hold these. Now, this hand would
02:38basically be good for holding not only the full can, which you have to kind of pry the fingers a little
02:43bit away from themselves, and he holds the can perfectly fine. If you prefer, though, to have him just
02:47finished his beverage, you can also have the crunched can sitting in his hand as well.
02:52The one concern, though, I really have about the crunched can is it does appear to be like a sticker
02:57that they've applied over top of a cylindrical piece of silver plastic. I don't know the longevity
03:02of this, if this is going to be always in his hand, whether that's going to start to fray or lift
03:06the plastic label. Still, though, it's the fact we actually have ourselves cans are still a nice touch.
03:11I did also want to show you guys some of the accessories that come included with the retro cloth release,
03:15so you guys can see the differences there. Knowing right away, I'm sure that the larger thing would
03:19be belonging to the retro cloth and the smaller belonging to the ultimate, you can see the
03:23differences in the colors between the two cans. It did also come included with a smashed can,
03:28so again, there's the larger version retro cloth release, and that slightly more obviously smaller
03:33ultimate release of the smashed can. The figure does also have a couple of pointing hands,
03:39a couple of other gestured hands, a hand really good for holding like the machete, for example,
03:43one for good holding or pointing, or you can also use it as well for the harpoon gun.
03:47The figure does also have a couple of gripping hands if you want to have them displayed with
03:51the gloves. I do actually like the fact that the gloves have some wear look to them. These aren't
03:56new gloves the man just bought in the store. These look like something he's had on the boat for quite
04:00a long time. He does also have another hand, again, good for holding the harpoon gun. The harpoon
04:05gun, by the way, is right over here. You can also have that good for displaying as well with the gun.
04:09The gun is one thing, of course, we can get into his hands. I guess maybe before we do that, though,
04:14we don't want to rush ahead of ourselves. Showing you guys what the gun looks like here.
04:18I think this is actually one of the few accessories that didn't belong to the retro cloth quint.
04:24He did come included, though, with the rifle and the harpoon gun, but omitted altogether,
04:28the figure didn't come included with this gun. Again, you can either use the non-gloved hand if you
04:34prefer. Now, this, again, you may have to heat these hands a little bit. Truth be told, though,
04:39I did heat these earlier, but I think the plastic has cooled a little too much.
04:44Go ahead and just take the finger, though, of the trigger, and you can have him holding the gun.
04:49Now, again, you can do that as well if you want to have him with the gloved hand, which is basically
04:52just the somewhat similar hand, although there's a lot more sculpting in it, obviously, because he has
04:56to have a glove on. Speaking of guns as well, the figure does also come included with his rifle.
05:01And just to reach offside here, here's also the rifle that came included with the retro cloth
05:06release. There is, though, notably color differences between the two. More of a kind of lighter cherry
05:11wood, maybe, perhaps, for the rifle, for the retro cloth. More of a darker chestnut for the ultimate
05:16release. It can be, of course, holstered on the side of his shoulder there, if you certainly would
05:21like to have that displayed that way. I did find, though, there was an issue kind of having him to
05:25hold the rifle, as it's always something that seems to be sliding down his arm. So you may want to
05:30just kind of have it slightly more in an angle, and just have it bouncing like that, and just hope
05:35that nobody coughs, nobody sneezes, nobody moves, because that rifle, I'm sure, is going to shimmy
05:39its way down his shoulder. He does also come included with a harpoon gun, and just, again, apples to
05:45apples, harpoons to harpoons. This is the one on the bottom here is the retro cloth. The one on the top,
05:50again, smaller, is the ultimate release. Not too much different. Again, there's a lot more color,
05:56though, for the retro than there is on the ultimate. The ultimate seems a little bit more muted.
06:00The harpoons, by the way, are not removable. Don't try to yank them, whatever you do.
06:04He does also have, at his disposal, a machete. Now, just again, show you guys the differences. The
06:09machete on the bottom, retro cloth. The machete on the top, again, ultimate release. What else does he
06:15have? He has a baseball bat. Now, one thing I did notice, though, about the baseball bats, not only is
06:20that one is bigger than the other, but also that the retro cloth had a lot more grain all over it.
06:26This one, though, I'd have to go back and re-watch the movie. Yeah, twist my rubber arm. The smaller
06:30one definitely doesn't have any grain on it at all. I don't know, though, if that's film accurate or not,
06:35or whether it should really have the grain. You could be to judge for yourself. Lastly, though,
06:41the figure does also have, if I just kind of move everything all out of the way,
06:44technically, also, the figure does also have some swappable heads. Now, what we did get,
06:50though, with the retro cloth release, we didn't technically get swappable heads. What we got
06:54instead, though, was removable hats. You just took the cap off, and then he had the bandana,
06:59and you could just put the bandana over top of his head like this. Now, I've done reviews of this,
07:03if you certainly did want to go back and re-watch that, but that kind of did the job of having,
07:08really not having to have two heads, because you basically would just be able to do the same without
07:12just, you know, just removing the cap and swapping it out that way. Let's pop that back in place.
07:17What they've done, though, instead is actually Quint does have two other head sculpts, one that
07:21actually does the exact same thing that I just did. It does actually give you a head sculpt that
07:26already has the bandana on the top. Nicely sculpted heads. One thing I will, though, say is just kind
07:32of move everything out of the way. Let's pick up defaulted head Quint and show you guys the
07:35differences between the two. Now, let's just get the cap back on. The cap is always prone to falling off
07:40frequently. Caps are pretty close. Honestly, though, if you were to ask me, and I hope that
07:45everybody has asked me by the fact that you're watching this video, I feel like, though, the
07:49paint is better handled on the retro cloth than it is on the Ultimate. Granted, though, the Ultimate
07:54does have a little bit more contrasting, like it's got the lighter red around the areas of the cheeks
07:58and the nose. Natural sun burning, I would imagine, as this man's been on the boat all day. This one
08:03doesn't have as much of that, but I do feel like the colors feel richer on the retro. Perhaps you guys can agree
08:09with that or not. The rim of the hat seems like it's a little bit longer here on the Ultimate.
08:14Seems a little bit shorter, though, on the retro. Obviously, this one would have also had a real
08:18fabric outfit, with, of course, the shirt underneath here. This one actually has to do things a little
08:23bit differently. But while I do think this is a good-looking head sculpt, perhaps maybe it's not
08:27as well painted as the retro. You can agree with that or disagree. Let me know down below in the
08:32comments section. But all in all, though, it definitely does capture the likeness of the late actor
08:37Robert Shaw. Certainly one of the standout roles. I mean, I don't think there was really a bad role
08:42at all in the movie Jaws. Between Roy Scheider, of course, Richard Dreyfuss. Just an all-star
08:47billing of cast. Now, if you did want to change out the head sculpts, one actually, though, I did want
08:53to show you. I didn't really show you the third one. So he has the capped head, he has the bandana head,
08:57and then he also has the laughing head. Would it be wrong for me to say I kind of wish that he had a
09:03screaming head as well? Maybe there would be, like, the final moments of Quint's action figure that was
09:08released as well. Maybe a bloodied version of that. I don't know. Like, it's really kind of hard to say
09:12because as a collector, I would say I would like to see this. But perhaps as well, like, maybe the
09:17family of Robert Shaw don't want to release a bloodied version of him. But then a screaming version
09:22of his head sculpt certainly would be ideal. If you did, though, want to change out the heads, just hold
09:26on to the torso, whatever you do. Pop off the head from the provided ball joint. Pop the new head
09:30that you want to do in place. And the hard thing with this always is that NECA does such a good
09:36job on the head sculpts and, like, the swappable component pieces. It would be hard-pressed not to
09:41want to go out and buy another one of these, just so I can have the figure displayed in two different
09:44ways. So keep the jacket on, for example, and have it with the capped head, and then have the jacket
09:50off, swap the arms out, which I'll do in a second, and have them displayed like this. I think,
09:56honestly, the only one that's going to be the odd man out is going to be this head sculpt.
09:59It's fine for what it is, but I don't see a purpose for that, at least for my shelf.
10:04You may like this head sculpt, and you're not wrong if you do. I just don't think I have a
10:08purpose. Even if I was to buy a second one, I would only be really buying a second one to have
10:12one displayed with the jacket in this head sculpt, one without the jacket, and displayed with this
10:16head sculpt. Speaking of jackets this whole time, the figure does also, of course, have the jacket
10:21that has the quint patch there on the side. Now, again, to look at the two differences between the
10:25two, I don't know. I do feel like the coloring is a little bit nicer on the retro cloth. I think
10:30the military green looks a little nicer on the retro. It's, I feel maybe too light. Is it maybe
10:35perhaps too light on the Ultimate? Also, too, it seems like it's a lot longer. Again, going back and
10:41looking at the source material, is that correct? Maybe it is, maybe it's not. The shirt that's
10:46underneath, too, I also feel like it needed to be a darker color. I think, along and all, it's a good
10:50figure. I think just like the colors need to be fixed just a little bit, just a little tweak,
10:54just a little tweak. Speaking of tweaking, if you want to tweak the look of Quint,
10:59I'm going to take the head off here. Not that it really matters. I guess you could really technically
11:03take the, keep the head on. I just find it kind of easier just to do it without. The figure does
11:07also have some swappable sleeves. So, essentially, the sleeves are going to be replacing what's here.
11:11So, you would have to imagine in your head. You won't have to imagine very long. It's just that the
11:15jacket's going to be now taken off. So, to take the jacket off, all the first you'll have to do is just
11:19remove the arms. Do it on both sides, just like that. And then just easily slide the jacket off.
11:26That's all that's really required. Take the arms, of course, that you want to use. Now, I know right
11:30now we're missing a few hands, so all hands on deck. There we go. That was a terrible joke. And
11:36we're going to go ahead and do the exact same thing on this side as well. You really do want to make
11:39sure that you plug them in well enough so that when you get to the figure's articulation, which I will
11:43be getting more in a moment, you don't want to have those arms popping off. That's the last thing you
11:47would want to have. Then take your head sculpt that you want to use. So, we're going to go with
11:51the bandana head look for Quint. Make sure it's all the way on there. There we go. And let's find
11:58ourselves some hands. Now, do we want to use maybe the gloved hands? That might be a good idea. So,
12:02we're going to take the gloved hands here, and the hands that basically just fit into those holes.
12:05I'm sure if you're collecting action figures by now, you're already familiar with the routine.
12:09So, just wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. No, you don't have to wiggle. You're going to wiggle the hands
12:13and just get them on there. Now, truth be told, this is the first time I'm doing this.
12:19Not necessarily swapping out the arms. I've already done that a couple of times and swapping out the
12:22head. This is, though, the first time I've put on the new hands. So, you might even notice, though,
12:26like there's a larger peg here, and it has to contend with a slightly smaller hole. So, that's the
12:31reason why I'm having to twist back and forth. Just to make sure I have a little bit of luck on my side,
12:36I'm also twisting back and forth behind the seam as well. Totally, totally unnecessary. But yeah,
12:42get that all the way on there. And now you've got Quint with the gloved hands. Now, again,
12:45you don't have to necessarily use the gloved hands. And then if you want to have the figure
12:48display, for example, with the machete. Where's the machete? Right over here. Go ahead and get
12:54the machete into his hands. I will say, though, this machete sits awfully loose in this gloved hand.
13:01Now, you can also have swapped out with this hand. It probably might have been the better hand to go
13:05with because it's a little bit smaller of a grip. I'm just kind of using this hand for right now,
13:08at least to show you guys what this looks like if you want to have the figure displayed on the shelf
13:11without, of course, his jacket. Let's remove that right now because I don't like the idea of him
13:16having a sharp weapon, especially if he's been drinking on the job. For the rest of his outfit,
13:20though, as we very certainly established, the head sculpt is really good on this guy.
13:24The rest of the shirt, though, of course, we now got the blue shirt. We've got ourselves just a pair
13:27of slacks down below here and a pair of, I would imagine, comfortable sneakers. If he's out on the
13:33orca for a long time, you'd like to hope, though, that he's wearing comfortable footwear.
13:36He does have pebbles, technically, on the bottoms of his feet, so you can make certainly use of a
13:40display stand if you happen to have one. No, no, not a display stand was included with the figure,
13:45but I'm sure you, it's a universally sized hole. Just use a display stand from another figure company.
13:50For Quint's articulation, with the look that we have right now, his head's going to be in a bowl
13:54joint, so it allows the head to rotate all the way around. Head's going to look down, it's going to
13:59look up, and you can also move it back and forth. The figure does not have a double hinge,
14:03where essentially he's got a hinge at the base of the neck. To get that seamless look, I'm not
14:09disappointed at all the fact that they chose not to put a double hinge, so a bowl joint here,
14:13a bowl joint here. They just chose not to do that. He still gets as much mobility as you would expect
14:17and really need from a figure without really sacrificing the look of the seamless neck.
14:22As for his arms, they do rotate all the way around, hoping, hoping, though, that you get the arms all
14:26the way pegged in. They plug out, or when they plugged in, I should say, they allow you at least to pull
14:31off a 90 degree angle bend or T pose. The figure does have a swivel in his arms, so standard levels
14:37of articulation with these figures, single hinge only in the elbow, but that single hinge also allows
14:42the arm to rotate back and forth. Hands also rotate all the way around. Quint's upper torso is going to
14:48be on a ball joint. Now, this actually is a softer material. It's harder the further you get up to the
14:53shoulders, but it's softer down here, so it does help aid with a little bit of more posability options.
14:58The legs do split out. You can see that there's ball joints working behind the scenes.
15:04Of course, you can move the legs forward and back. There's a nice swivel there at the top of the thigh,
15:08right there, right there. Quint only has a single hinge in the knee. The lower leg does, though,
15:13manage to pull off a swivel back and forth. Ankle pivot up and down. Ankle rocker, back and forth.
15:19Good looking, Quint? I'd say so, yeah. I mean, it's nice. Obviously, not everybody is really keen to
15:24collecting the retro cloth figures. If you were collecting the retro cloth figures, where's the
15:28bandana for him? Let's get the bandana on him so he's somewhat like-to-like. If you're not really
15:33all that interested in collecting retro cloth figures, maybe you think that they're a little
15:37lanky, a little lean. Usually, though, NECA is always really going back to relying on the same
15:43bodies time and time again when it comes to their retro figures, so that usually then results in a
15:47figure, always with retros being a little bit leaner. If you don't like the leanness of Quint and prefer
15:53something a little stockier, or just you really generally like to collect more ultimate figures,
15:57I don't think you're necessarily wrong passing on this guy in favor of this guy. Or why not? Maybe
16:01you're only one that's collecting toony terrors. That's the idea. Obviously, then the benefit of
16:06toony terrors is right out the gate, you got yourself a shark. Yeah, so we got ourselves a
16:12couple of versions of Quint. The question, I'm sure if you guys are already been asking this whole time,
16:17is which do you prefer? I've always kind of been the go-to when it comes to ultimate figures.
16:21Ultimate NECA figures is always really my jam. If I was to only really be collecting one thing,
16:26one thing, as opposed to everything, I would definitely go right way to collecting the
16:30ultimate figures. And for that reason, I would be happy to have that Quint. If I was to go kind
16:34of looking at the figures that we've already gotten from Quint, not just, I'm going to kind
16:38of exclude the toony terror for at least right now. If I was to only be looking at these two figures,
16:42this benefits from having a better body. This figure benefits, I feel, from having better colored
16:47clothing and a better painted head. The head, though, is only going to be the one that we have.
16:51So if you want to have them displayed with or without the cap, you would have to use the same
16:55head to do that. Just take off the cap, put on the new bandana. This benefits from having, of course,
16:59more swappable options. You can take off his jacket, although this one, obviously, you could take the
17:03jacket off as well. In the end, though, the ultimate figure is probably the better one that I would like
17:08to have on my shelf, just because, again, I'm generally more collecting the ultimate figures.
17:12But I definitely think there could be argument made that I think the retro cloth version of Quint
17:16is still a better painted figure. Sorry, present me. Future me has to interrupt you for a second
17:20before you move the figure to the turntable. One elephant I want to discuss that's been in the
17:24room this whole time during the review, well, it wasn't so much an elephant. It was this gun right
17:28here. This gun does not belong at all to the neck of Quint from Jaws. In fact, it belongs to something
17:34from McFarlane Toys. When I took Quint out of the packaging, I put the figure down, I took all the
17:39accessories out of the tray, and I moved everything to the far left side of the screen. Sure enough,
17:43though, when I moved everything back in to start the review, in the process, I also slid this gun in.
17:48I couldn't figure out at the time that I was doing the review why I was talking about a gun that I
17:52don't remember seeing in the film. Sure enough, it doesn't appear in the film. It was something that
17:56belonged from a completely different toy line, and I was talking away about it. So if you guys have had
18:01the chance to pick up this figure for yourselves, have wondered during this whole time of this review,
18:05I don't remember seeing this gun. It's because this gun never belonged to Quint in the first place.
18:09It belonged to a different line. Okay, let's jump to the turntable. I don't think Jaws coming out on
18:14my birthday really has anything to do with why I like the film so much. Jaws came out, by the way,
18:18June 20th, 1975. Before you start to do the math, that's only just really the month and the day that
18:23matches my birthday. I wasn't actually born in 1975. You've got to add another three years on top of
18:28that. He's that old? I am that old. As for, though, the release of Quint here as an ultimate figure,
18:34does it look, I feel, a lot like the late Robert Shaw? Yes, I do. Does it look, though,
18:39better than the retrocloth release? That's debatable. The thing about the retrocloth
18:42figures, though, is that back to the basics of using the same body, NECA always goes back to
18:47the wellhouse of when they're using the retrocloth figures, it's only really the new head sculpts and
18:51the new clothing that you get. It does then mean that when it comes to Quint, the retrocloth release
18:57does have notably a much leaner looking body. Some may not like the look of that. Some may just
19:02generally like to have more of an articulated plastic figure, so again, I don't think you're
19:06wrong necessarily for wanting the ultimate over the retro. Does the retro have better paint on the
19:10face? I feel yes. One thing, though, that this one then does benefit from having is that this also has
19:16like the reddish in the cheeks and on the nose, so it looks like he's got a bit more of a sunburn.
19:21The coloring, though, for the retrocloth, while having a darker color, more lifelike color,
19:26it's kind of, again, very more monotones. There's not really a lot of highs and lows to the paint job
19:30that they've done to the face, so some may really argue and say that the ultimate does the job better.
19:35This one also certainly does the job better by having three swappable heads. The retrocloth did
19:39really rely on having just one head, popping off a cap, swapping out with the bandana, rinse and repeat.
19:44This one just has to have swappable heads, because you just change it out with two other heads that
19:49the figure does come included with. Pop off the sleeves, replace out the jacket, and now you can have
19:54Quint looking two different ways that he appears in the film. If I was, though, to go and buy another one of
19:59these Quints. Still, I don't think I'm going to ever display the figure with a laughing face.
20:03I myself would have rather had a screaming face for Quint. The thing about it, though, is Robert Shaw's
20:09family, to honor, of course, the legacy of the late actor, maybe they didn't want to sign on to the
20:13idea, like if NECA pitched the idea, hey, you know, we want to do a Quint, and then we're going to
20:17release another Quint, where he's all bloodied, he's going to be screaming like the shark is mowing down
20:22him. Maybe Robert Shaw's family looked at that idea and said, yeah, you know what, we're not really
20:26liking the idea of that. So maybe they just settled on the idea to release Shaw with one figure,
20:32three swappable head sculpts, and kind of being more remembered for the Quint as the hero, not the
20:37Quint that ended up being shark food. What do you guys think of the figure? Let me know down below in
20:40the comment section. Do you guys see yourselves picking this one up? And if you do, what plans do
20:45you have for displaying him? Are you going to keep the jacket on with the cap, or are you going to have
20:48the jacket off and with the bandana? If you guys did also enjoy this video, you can do it a solid and
20:53throw it a like. You guys want to stick around for more? So I hope so. This, by the way, isn't the
20:57end of Shark Week, even though Shark Week really for us is only going to be consisting of two videos.
21:02Maybe wrapping up things right now for the ultimate Quint. Right around the corner, though, we're going
21:05to be looking at ultimate Hoopa. He's definitely going to be coming your way, so I hope you guys are
21:09going to be coming for that. As always, thanks for watching. See you guys next time.
21:23Take care.
21:32Bye.
21:35Bye.
