Diviso in due parti, il film ripropone i primi 22 capitoli del libro della Genesi, anche se in origine (come testimonia anche il sottotitolo "In the Beginning" (lett. "in principio") il produttore Dino De Laurentiis aveva in mente un'opera che avrebbe dovuto portare sullo schermo l'intera Bibbia (in due capitoli, uno per il Vecchio e uno per il Nuovo Testamento) e che sarebbe stata affidata a diversi registi.
