00:00:24political showdown the governor and attorney general now threatening democratic lawmakers
00:00:29who fled the state with removal replacement and even arrest as efforts to block republican
00:00:35redistricting go national we'll talk to house minority leader hakeem jeffries about what's at
00:00:41stakes when it comes to the balance of power also ahead watching wall street as the white house
00:00:46defends the firing of a top labor official over bad jobs numbers the alarm bells it's ringing about trust
00:00:53and independence plus more on the move of epstein accomplice galane maxwell to a minimum security
00:01:00prison camp and what we know about why
00:01:07it's 10 eastern 7 a.m pacific i'm anna cabrera reporting from new york mutually assured destruction
00:01:13a rapidly escalating political fight in texas is being described in nuclear terms as it spirals into
00:01:20a battle over the balance of power in washington right now more than 50 democrats from the texas
00:01:26state house are hunkered down in illinois new york and massachusetts to prevent the texas legislature
00:01:32from approving a trump-friendly congressional map republican governor greg abbott has threatened that
00:01:38members could face felonies and expulsion from office if they're not back to gavel in at 3 p.m local
00:01:44time last night those texas democrats seemed unlikely to budge making their counteroffer quote come and
00:01:50take it this redistricting effort would wipe out a handful of democratic seats on capitol hill
00:01:56swapping in five new republican districts giving the trump gop serious cushion in next year's midterms
00:02:04we're tracking this all with nbc's ryan chandler in austin texas nbc's shaquille brewster in chicago
00:02:10and our senior white house correspondent gabe gutierrez shaq texas democrats have fled there to
00:02:16illinois they appear to be calling governor abbott's bluff this morning after he threatened not only
00:02:21to arrest them all but to replace them all what else are you hearing there
00:02:27well on the last we heard was that overnight statement that forward statement that you just put
00:02:32on screen and they said come and take it really as you mentioned trying to call out the texas governor
00:02:38who has laid those threats out after their move to come to illinois and avoid uh having a quorum
00:02:44there but you know that of course came after a pretty uh late night and extensive press conference
00:02:50after they landed in chicago they were joined there by illinois's governor jb pritzker and what they did
00:02:57was try to frame this in a national context trying to speak to a national audience i want you to listen
00:03:02to a little bit of what we heard from texas lawmaker just last night we from texas are so familiar with
00:03:10the phrase of our apollo 13 mission houston we have a problem well i say america we have a problem
00:03:18the largest democracy in the world and yet a texas governor would bend a knee
00:03:26to donald trump because he's afraid to lose an election fair and square
00:03:33now anna when they were asked about the long game here how long they plan to stay what they hope to
00:03:38ultimately achieve they weren't able to answer that specifically you simply heard the party chair there
00:03:44say they're taking this day by day but uh this is something that we of course are going to be
00:03:49watching we're going to see what they plan for later today but right now they are in the state of
00:03:54illinois many of them and it's not just illinois you mentioned new york as well so shaq what's up
00:03:59with jb pritzker's involvement the governor of illinois how did he get involved yeah this is
00:04:05something that was really more than a month in the making he said last night at that press conference
00:04:10that he met with a group of them about 10 days ago and he said he it was a frank conversation and that
00:04:16he directed his staff to provide all logistical support necessary to make this happen but anna we know
00:04:22that this uh planning went a little bit beyond that because a source familiar or source close
00:04:27to the governor telling nbc news that while the governor was giving a speech to democrats in
00:04:32oklahoma in late june it was there he met with the party chair and that's when plans
00:04:38for a move like this uh started to form and ryan the texas legislature is supposed to be in session
00:04:45at 3 p.m local time so what happens if these democrats are no shows
00:04:53well put simply nothing on a quick texas house math for you there's 88 republicans you need a
00:04:58hundred in order to do anything on on the house floor they have plenty of votes to pass this bill
00:05:04eventually but they don't have enough votes to bring it up uh for a vote that is the whole idea between
00:05:09uh behind democrats leaving the state uh to to put a stop to all business uh on the house floor
00:05:17and and to to shaq's point earlier about the extreme measures that the governor is is taking
00:05:21up here we're hearing from the governor's office one of his senior advisors is openly advertising
00:05:27these seats saying that we need candidates to run for seats that have been abandoned and will soon be
00:05:33open for a special election that of course is a question for the courts whether the governor can
00:05:38declare these seats vacant but the governor's office is not playing around uh and is trying
00:05:43to replace these representatives shortly if they do not return which by the way they won't at least
00:05:48not today gabe was the white house expecting a huge national fight on this or were they just thinking
00:05:54this texas move might just fly under the radar well anna the white house doesn't really shy shy away
00:06:02uh from a national fight they certainly expected uh that this would be uh contentious the
00:06:07interesting thing here is is that there has been a notable a noticeable silence uh from the white
00:06:13house and really the president himself over the last several days ever since uh senate democrats last
00:06:19week uh pressed for uh and the opening of an investigation into the white house over possible
00:06:25violations of the hatch act which of course bars public officials from getting involved in campaign
00:06:32activities this all comes from uh after uh earlier uh or last month mid uh july uh when the president
00:06:40made some remarks about this texas redistricting push but also was involved in a call with uh republicans
00:06:46in texas talking about uh this push the president saying that he wanted uh there to be a national
00:06:52push not just in texas but potentially several other states to redraw these lines and uh to help republicans
00:07:01during the midterm elections but noticeably since uh then or at least in the last several days the
00:07:06white house hasn't been very eager to talk about this on all right gabe gutierrez ryan chandler
00:07:12shaquille brewster guys thank you all very much we're joined now by a democratic member of the texas
00:07:18state house john bryant who's in illinois right now representative bryant thanks for taking the time
00:07:23governor abbott abbott is saying that democrats are running from this fight by leaving the state what's your
00:07:28response well we're actually fighting the fight by leaving the state the republicans have an 88 to 62
00:07:36majority in the texas house and the only way we can stop this bill from passing is to prevent them
00:07:41from having a quorum and bringing it up so more than 51 democrats have left the state in order to
00:07:48prevent them from having the hundred members in attendance that they need in order to pass the bill
00:07:54you all knew the threat of arrest could be on the table now the governor is threatening to expel and
00:08:01replace you and your colleagues as well do you expect the governor to follow through on that threat
00:08:06and what will democrats do then well he has no power to do that uh uh in this uh lawless era of trump
00:08:16i'm sure they will attempt to do whatever they can dream up but he does not have that power uh even if he
00:08:22did i think we would stand firm all of us would be re-elected the public doesn't support this idea
00:08:28of a president calling a governor and telling him to redraw the congressional lines in his district in
00:08:35the middle of the decade in order to help the president win a majority or keep a majority in the in the
00:08:42congress that's not the way it's ever been done it's not right and the public doesn't support it
00:08:48are you worried about arrests is anyone there worried and and trying to get back home
00:08:55well we expect almost anything from the right-wing extremists that now run our country in our
00:09:03particular state uh i don't think that's likely to happen but it certainly could happen uh particularly
00:09:10if we were in their in the jurisdiction but we're in illinois uh we're outside the reach i think of
00:09:17the house sergeant at arms and uh for now anyway uh we're happy to be here we're happy with whatever
00:09:24the consequences are i mean we want to protect our democracy from trump we also want to protect
00:09:32middle class people from medicare cuts medicaid cuts i'm sure social security is next and from higher
00:09:38prices due to tariffs also from the transfer of wealth from the middle class to the billionaires to
00:09:46these tax cuts that are creating historic deficits for our country so you said you're happy
00:09:53to deal with whatever the repercussions are are you prepared to be arrested sure we are but let me point
00:10:02out to you millions of americans would like to be able to directly fight against president trump
00:10:08we have the unique privilege to take him on right now and we're we're glad to be doing it uh our
00:10:14our obligation is to our country not to holding office and certainly not to doing what a a man-child
00:10:24president demands of our governor of course the governor would argue and he am using his words says
00:10:31democrats hatched a deliberate plan not to show up for work for the specific purpose of abdicating
00:10:37their duties of their office and thwarting the chamber's business he's arguing you're not doing your job
00:10:42well that's that's the governor talking our governor is an empty suit he does what trump tells him
00:10:50and he spouts off uh slogans that are prepared for him by his public relations staff he's not a
00:10:57substantive leader and uh we expect him to do whatever trump tells him to do but to to respond directly to
00:11:06what you just said our duty is to use whatever parliamentary tools are available to them to us
00:11:13and breaking a quorum is one of those tools and it's the only one that will stop trump from getting
00:11:20his way redrawing all of our congressional lines and picking up five additional republicans to try to
00:11:27ameliorate the losses that he expects in the midterm national congressional elections texas state
00:11:35representative john bryant thank you very much for joining us we appreciate your time thank you just
00:11:42ahead we'll talk to house minority leader hakeem jeffries about this larger battle for control of
00:11:46the house of representatives and up next economic anxiety new tariffs rising inflation a weak jobs report and
00:11:54now the head of labor statistics fired is that supposed to instill confidence in the president's
00:12:00economic strategy plus maxwell's big move why epstein's accomplice was moved to a different prison
00:12:07in what's being called an unusual transfer and on the hunt the intensifying search for a shooter who
00:12:13killed four at a bar in montana we're back in 90 seconds

00:13:44that alternates between two cents to fight odors and provide freshness for up to 50 days try febreze plug
00:13:54biggest miscalculation in over 50 years that is what president trump claims led to his firing of the
00:14:02bureau of labor statistics commissioner erica mcintarfer now mcintarfer who was confirmed to be commissioner
00:14:08on a bipartisan vote of 86 to 8 just last year signed off on a revised report from her team on
00:14:14friday a report that showed a 250 000 job drop in the months of may and june combined now after this
00:14:22report came out the president announced he had fired mcintarfer but now white house economic advisor
00:14:28kevin hassett suggests she may not be the only person to be let go but just to be very clear i
00:14:35mean there are 40 people put these numbers together is the president planning to fire all 40 people
00:14:41involved in putting these numbers together we're going to try to get the numbers so that they're
00:14:44transparent and reliable so is the president prepared to fire anyone who reports data that he
00:14:50disagrees with no absolutely not the president wants his own people there so that when we see the
00:14:55numbers they're more transparent and more reliable joining us now nbc news white house correspondent
00:15:02monica alba nbc news business and data correspondent brian chung and also with us former chair of the
00:15:07council of economic advisors under president biden jared bernstein monica let's start with you how is
00:15:13president trump justifying this move this firing well it's pretty curious on him because he's essentially
00:15:19saying that when the numbers were good they were okay but when they weren't he didn't like
00:15:24them that's effectively what this is boiling down to and this is a president who does have the right
00:15:29to remove this person they're a political appointee and that is exactly what he did on friday he said
00:15:34after seeing the latest jobs report that was of course a weaker one and he now is presenting without
00:15:41any evidence that in effect this data is somehow cooked or rigged in his words here's a little bit more
00:15:47of what he had to say last night when he was coming back from his golf club in new jersey
00:15:51i mean the numbers were ridiculous what she announced but that was just one negative number
00:15:56all of the numbers seemed to be great and so we'll see how that comes out and if you remember
00:16:02just before the election this woman came out with these phenomenal numbers on biden's uh economy
00:16:11phenomenal numbers and then right after the election they announced that those numbers were wrong
00:16:18and that's what they did the other day so it's a scam in my opinion
00:16:25and again anna there's no one in the trump administration who can point to why the president
00:16:29believes that this data again has been skewed in some way or has been politically motivated it's put
00:16:35together by these independent statisticians and data experts who then present it to the commissioner who
00:16:41oversees that large team and you're right that there could be this question now of other people that
00:16:45maybe he would seek to remove he says he's going to announce his replacement in the coming days but
00:16:50another key point here anna is this idea that the president has been really inconsistent in his patchwork
00:16:56and criticism of the economy because again when things are trending in the direction that he likes
00:17:00he touts it and his own commerce secretary howard lutnik just a few days ago said the trump economy has
00:17:06officially arrived and argued that the president owns every piece of it and brian what we heard from the
00:17:12president there wasn't actually all true right can you give us a fact check on on the numbers what
00:17:18we've seen from mcintarfer and her team in the past and how these reports usually work yeah well first
00:17:23off the suggestion that because the government said that oh actually the numbers that we saw for jobs
00:17:28gains in the months of may and june were weren't correct as first initially reported is part of the
00:17:34standard procedure of what the bureau of labor statistics does when they take a look at these numbers
00:17:38it's not just in july every month of the year when they report these new jobs numbers they look at
00:17:42the two prior months and say based off of new data that we got in right because the way this is done
00:17:47is by a survey they phone call households and say hey what's your job situation they also phone call
00:17:52establishments that hire people and say how many people did you hire over the months sometimes
00:17:56some of those responses come in a little bit late so they go back to the two prior months of data
00:18:00and say hey now that we've got this new information we're actually going to change and revise
00:18:04those numbers so that they are more accurate so these revisions are part of the standard operating
00:18:08procedure and then not only do they take a look back at the two prior months but then once a year
00:18:13they have what the what they call these benchmark revisions where they take a look at unemployment
00:18:17insurance data uh state by state and they say hey let's make sure this matches up and that this
00:18:22is properly benchmark and then they re-revise everything as well so they change all the time
00:18:26but the suggestion that because these are larger and that they're outliers it doesn't line up because
00:18:30as any statistician or economist knows outliers are just part of the normal course of collecting
00:18:35right and he also claims that this was some kind of political maneuver he without and without proof
00:18:40and the other piece of it is he tried to and we heard and i just want to correct it for the record
00:18:46in that clip he said that she had put out these glorious numbers glowing numbers before the election
00:18:53that were then later revised downward under the biden administration whereas the numbers before
00:19:00the election were actually quite poor and dim ahead of the election not after and i think it's important
00:19:07to note that jared we heard kevin hassett say if the president has his people he'll see the numbers as
00:19:12more transparent and more reliable what do you make of that logic uh that's uh really quite illogical i mean
00:19:20the idea that you would stack a statistical agency with quote your people is a great way to undermine
00:19:27the credibility of the american statistical system which is the same result of firing uh director
00:19:34commissioner uh mccintarfer um what we've seen in argentina in china in greece in countless banana republics
00:19:43is precisely this type of a threat authoritarian move where when the actual numbers when the economic
00:19:49reality impinges on the alternative reality that uh leaders like donald trump want to try to force down
00:19:58all of us uh what do they do do they do they take the reality they look at the numbers and try to change
00:20:04course um re getting rid of the tariffs or readjusting on their policies whether it's harassing the fed or
00:20:12deportations or doge no they fire the messengers and uh try to again um build this false structure
00:20:21this tends to redound against the country whether it's our markets whether it's our international
00:20:27trade and frankly people are not idiots they know if the economy is doing badly they're going to know
00:20:34that regardless of what trump's quote own people tell them jared at this point president trump's only
00:20:39fired the bls commissioner not her whole team but what happens if he goes after the staffers that
00:20:45actually collect the data for these reports what economic dangers lie in a non-independent report
00:20:52uh it's a really important question i would have to imagine that every person working and reporting on
00:20:58data for the federal government at this point uh would uh believe that if they deliver a number that
00:21:04the president doesn't like they better start printing out their resume so what happens we're
00:21:09driving in the dark with no headlights what happens is we don't know where our economy is and where it's
00:21:14going markets don't know trading partners don't know uh people are creditors those who buy our bonds
00:21:20don't know so they'll insist on higher uh interest rates i mean there is a an historical playbook we don't
00:21:27have to make this up as we go along we've seen it again in greece and argentina in china this always ends
00:21:33very badly because you know reality has a way of taking hold and i actually think that's what's
00:21:38happening to the trump administration right now their bad policy is showing up in the data so what
00:21:43do they do they fire the people reporting the data the dow fell 500 points on friday after this
00:21:49announcement this morning the markets are in the green as of now let's listen to what businessmen and
00:21:54shark tank investor kevin o'leary said about all the economic volatility
00:21:59i don't look at one day's trading and decide i'm going to change my strategy i mean i i want markets
00:22:07to correct i want them to go up and down we're used to volatility we had a bad print on jobs i did
00:22:13not agree on whacking the commissioner i don't like that whacking statisticians makes no sense
00:22:19whatsoever they don't shoot the messenger they used to do that in ancient rome bad news to kill the
00:22:24guy off the horse you don't need to do that now it doesn't matter this is a job where you just print
00:22:28data so brian of the business leaders you're talking to specifically the trump supporters how
00:22:34are they reacting to the president's latest economic moves from this bls firing to the tariffs yeah well
00:22:41look the repeating of the talking points from the trump administration is kind of part of the base
00:22:45that is energized by all this rhetoric but i do want to point out that even those within wall street who
00:22:50may be behind closed doors a supporter republican administration for some of the business reasons
00:22:55and tax cuts they don't like this and the idea here is that the volatility that's being introduced
00:23:00into markets single-handedly because of decisions by the administration to rock the boat in terms of
00:23:05how international trade is done with the tariffs which again that conversation will be ramping up as
00:23:09we get closer to that august 7 deadline later on this week but then also because of now what is the
00:23:13combination of the politicization of the federal reserve which is that independent central bank where
00:23:18the president almost on a daily basis has been coming down hard on jay powell for not more
00:23:23aggressively lowering interest rates and now the politicization of the stats themselves jp morgan
00:23:29again one of these large wall street banks they had a note over the weekend saying having a flawed
00:23:33instrument panel can be just as dangerous as having an obediently partisan pilot and the worry here anna is
00:23:39that we have both a flawed instrument panel because of the disenfranchising of government statistics
00:23:45as well as the uh a pilot that is flying this plane that potentially could be a steering the economy
00:23:50somewhere else all right brian chung uh monica alba and jared bernstein thank you all up next here
00:23:55on anna cabrera reports her new prison mates include a former real housewife of salt lake city also a
00:24:02former silicon valley wonder kid with wild claims about blood who decided to move galane maxwell to this
00:24:09minimum security prison and why plus we'll talk to house minority leader hakeem jeffries about the
00:24:14push to release the epstein files as republicans look to sideline that effort

00:28:58growing questions this morning about why jeffrey epstein's accomplice glane maxwell was moved from
00:29:04a low security prison in florida to a minimum security prison camp in texas this happening just days after
00:29:11her meetings with deputy attorney general trump's former personal defense attorney todd blanche the
00:29:17texas facility mostly houses women accused of non-violent offenses and white collar crimes maxwell is
00:29:23serving a 20-year sentence for her role in recruiting and trafficking minors for sex joining us now nbc
00:29:31and justice and intelligence correspondent kandelanian and former federal prosecutor
00:29:36and kush kadori so ken what do we know about why maxwell was moved hey good morning anna well
00:29:43look the bureau of prisons has not said why they did this and neither has the department of justice
00:29:48which oversees that agency but what we do know is that prison officials had to waive a rule that
00:29:53sex offenders can't be sent to minimum security prison camps and we spoke to a federal prison expert
00:29:58who told us he has never seen this happen before he said he has tried in some cases to request
00:30:03these waivers on behalf of clients but has always been turned down and again bureau prisons is not
00:30:08saying why they departed from their own policies so profoundly in this case meanwhile the family of
00:30:13virginia jufri issued a statement that's one of epstein's victims who committed suicide saying that
00:30:18they greeted this move with horror and outrage they stated uh quote we object to the preferential
00:30:24treatment convicted sex trafficker jelaine maxwell has received jelaine maxwell they're saying is a
00:30:30sexual predator who physically assaulted minor children on multiple occasions and she should
00:30:34never be shown any leniency and of course this move is fueling speculation that uh she has or is cutting
00:30:41some sort of deal with the justice department although there is no definitive word on whether
00:30:45that has happened so and kush the president has brushed off questions about a pardon for maxwell
00:30:51how do you see this move is it an alternative form of leniency um no i i don't quite see it that
00:30:59way i mean in the ordinary course when federal prosecutors are trying to develop a cooperating
00:31:03witness they meet with them they gather their information they have fbi agents present to record
00:31:07that one of the things they are not supposed to do is grant them any form of preferential treatment
00:31:12or accommodation and i'm talking i'm not even talking about moving someone to a a prison camp i'm
00:31:17talking about giving them soda i'm talking about giving them snacks um you don't do any of those things
00:31:21because it encourages the potential cooperator to tell you what you want to hear intentionally or
00:31:27otherwise it compromises the accuracy integrity of the information you're gathering and it um uh
00:31:33decreases confidence in the outcome on the part of judges juries and the public so i see this as in
00:31:39line with what appears to be an effort to develop her as a cooperator um and an effort that has already
00:31:45run afoul of a bunch of norms and practices and this just seems to be the latest one ken can you tell
00:31:51us what changes for maxwell's day-to-day at this facility compared to the other how much more freedom
00:31:56is there so the physical conditions won't be terribly different because maxwell already was
00:32:02living in the so-called honor dorm in that florida low security prison where she had access to things
00:32:06like yoga classes but the prison expert we spoke to told us the biggest change would be in the
00:32:11quality of inmates the people who serve in prison camps tend to be lower level offenders with lesser
00:32:16sentences and he told us that even in women's prisons sex offenders often get harsh treatment from other
00:32:21inmates but in a prison camp he said that doesn't usually happen on and kush we saw real objections
00:32:28to this move from some of epstein's survivors would they have been notified about this move in advance
00:32:34would victims usually be consulted before making a decision like this i don't think so i mean we do
00:32:40have excuse me uh federal statutes that require uh the justice department to consult with or provide
00:32:46notice to victims in criminal investigations and cases in certain instances typically around the
00:32:51most significant events for instance if you're planning to plead that defendant out or if you're
00:32:55planning to charge them so the victims are aware this is the sort of thing that i don't think would rise
00:32:59to that level but um it is still the case that justice department prosecutors are still in the ordinary
00:33:05course of things be mindful of and attentive to the interest of victims they do not get to dictate the
00:33:11progress of a criminal investigation or the ultimate outcome of a criminal investigation the
00:33:15prosecutors are supposed to maintain their interests and keep them uh high in their minds uh as i think
00:33:20most conscientious prosecutors do and i'm not surprised um that maxwell's victims are offended
00:33:25they have every right to be offended they should be offended in fact and kush kadori ken delaney and
00:33:30guys thank you very much meantime former fox news host janine pirro is now officially the top
00:33:36federal prosecutor for washington dc after the senate confirmed her to this role on saturday now pirro

00:39:09here in new york we will not stand on the sidelines with the timid souls
00:39:13on the sidelines who don't care will not invest their their heart and soul into this battle this is a war
00:39:20we are at war and that's why the gloves are off and i say bring it on that is new york governor
00:39:29kathy hochel earlier this hour welcoming texas democratic lawmakers to her state
00:39:35after dozens of them fled the lone star state to block a vote on new congressional maps
00:39:40the redistricting plan backed by president trump could help republicans pick up five more house seats
00:39:46in texas turning one state's fight into a national debate on political power and now those texas
00:39:52democrats are getting assistance from several blue state governors while facing the threat of losing
00:39:57their seats or even arrest back home and joining us now house minority leader congressman hakeem
00:40:03jeffries of new york leader jeffries thanks for being with us texas governor greg abbott's now
00:40:08threatening felony charges he's threatening to replace these state democrats what's your reaction to these
00:40:15threats well texas governor is a cowardly fake bully he was ordered by donald trump to convene
00:40:24a special session of the legislature in order to gerrymander the texas congressional map and try to
00:40:30rig the midterm elections this is taking place at a moment in time where just a few weeks ago more than
00:40:37100 people including dozens of children drowned to death in the texas hill country as a result of that
00:40:44historic flooding and uh inaction or lack of preparation by governor abbott and republicans
00:40:52in texas this is a cowardly move uh by republicans in texas and i'm so appreciative of the courage the
00:41:00character and the conviction being shown by texas democrats from the legislature uh new york governor
00:41:08hoka we just played there calling this redistricting fight a war saying this is a war we are at war is
00:41:14that how you see it democrats are going to respond from coast to coast and at all points in between
00:41:24to this effort to steal the midterm elections republicans are on the run right now donald trump
00:41:29is deeply unpopular they have one big ugly bill which is now law is deeply unpopular it rips away
00:41:36health care from millions of americans steals food from the mouths of children all of this is being
00:41:42done in terms of hurting everyday americans so they can reward their billionaire donors and they
00:41:48don't want to face the voters in a free and fair election perhaps donald trump and mike johnson and
00:41:56republicans in washington and texas thought that democrats would not respond we're going to respond
00:42:02forcefully aggressively and relentlessly what do you mean this is an effort to steal the midterm elections
00:42:12the republicans in texas already drew a gerrymandered map that is being challenged in court as we speak
00:42:23but that's not good enough for them so they now want to enact a separate map in the middle of the decade
00:42:31that takes five seats that are currently held from democrats including several in majority minority
00:42:40communities around austin houston and dallas breaks them apart and tries to put them into republican
00:42:49hands these extremists want to be able to choose their voters as opposed to allowing the texas voters
00:42:56to choose the people who should be privileged to represent them in washington it's that that's what
00:43:01gerrymandering in its extreme form is and that's what republicans are trying to do is that the case then if
00:43:08texas uh repercussions lead to california lead to new york lead to illinois potentially doing the same in
00:43:18those states to try to pick up more democrat democratic seats great question we're going to
00:43:25respond and respond forcefully however uh we also will operate within the constraints of the voting
00:43:31rights act which is not what texas democrats are doing we need fair maps and one national standard and
00:43:39that's why responses in democratic states will be required however what was happening in texas
00:43:45before and what is going on in texas right now in terms of this second attempt uh to gerrymander the
00:43:51map we believe violates the voting rights act you will not see that happen in democratic states but you
00:43:57will see uh governors and state legislatures and of course members of the house democratic caucus
00:44:05respond in kind there is no unilateral disarmament when we're in the middle of an all-out assault
00:44:12by donald trump and republican sycophants on the economy on health care on our way of life
00:44:18on law-abiding immigrant communities on democracy itself you've called the texas republicans behind
00:44:25these redistricting efforts cowards but this effort can be traced right up to the white house the
00:44:30president has made no secret he wants this republicans want to cement control of your chamber for a long
00:44:37time they control all levers of government right now realistically how can you stop them understand
00:44:45uh that donald trump is afraid of the fact uh that the voters are prepared in our view to reject
00:44:55this impotent house republican majority that has done nothing to improve the quality of life for
00:45:01everyday americans done nothing uh to lower the high cost of living nothing uh to give these
00:45:08hard-working american taxpayers across the country the ability to thrive when right now people can
00:45:14barely survive and donald trump and house republicans are crashing the economy in real time we're only
00:45:20three seats short uh from taking back the house that is a historically close number that is what has
00:45:28house republicans and donald trump scared to death of what is going to happen in the midterm election
00:45:35that's why we're seeing this extraordinary action in texas but you also are going to see an extraordinary
00:45:40response from democrats coast to coast throughout the country and at all points in between um we're just
00:45:48getting some new reporting as we speak right now from our white house team um and according to an
00:45:54administration official there are no plans to use federal agents to go arrest these texas lawmakers who
00:46:00left the state um the quote here governor greg abbott can handle his own state if the texas governor
00:46:08moves to charge or arrest these lawmakers what will house democrats do anything can you do anything
00:46:15that move will be challenged of course immediately in court and we're going to collectively ensure
00:46:21ensure uh that the texas house democrats are provided with all the support uh that they need and that of
00:46:28course uh includes ensuring uh this is the decent and right thing to do ensuring uh that they can't be
00:46:37bullied unlawfully uh by governor abbott or the so-called attorney general in texas or any of these other
00:46:44republican sycophants who instead of actually providing relief uh and recovery and resiliency efforts to
00:46:54the people who are suffering in the texas hill country and beyond as a result of this historic
00:46:59flooding they call this special session using the cover of that suffering because they want to jam this
00:47:05gerrymandered map down the throats of the people of texas and the american people and we're not going to
00:47:11allow it to happen in texas to the best of our ability and certainly will respond all across the
00:47:17country so leaving the state is an example of democratic lawmakers there in texas fighting back
00:47:23but it comes at a time when a new ap poll shows many democratic voters see your party as weak or
00:47:30ineffective these are democratic voters we also saw that recent poll by the wall street journal showing
00:47:35voters trust congressional republicans over democrats on handling most issues from the economy to
00:47:41immigration to foreign policy with democrats getting their lowest rating in that poll in 35 years does
00:47:47that any of that surprise you uh you know in that same wall street journal poll when they were asked
00:47:54uh who would you prefer in control of the house of representatives in november of 2026 the so-called
00:48:01generic ballot question democrats won in that very same wall street journal poll so certainly uh it's
00:48:08the case that we're in a more is more environment and we have to continue to do more uh more rallies
00:48:14more press conferences more protests more sit-ins more speeches on the house floor more speeches on
00:48:20the senate floor more extraordinary actions more site visits more town hall meetings in democratic
00:48:25districts more town hall meetings in republican districts we're in a more is more environment we have
00:48:30to continue to build upon that and earn the trust of the american people including democrats who are
00:48:35understandably disappointed at the results of the november 2024 election and the situation that the
00:48:43country finds itself in but our view is do not be discouraged do not be disheartened do not be dismayed
00:48:52we're going to continue to show up and stand up and speak up we're going to end this national nightmare
00:48:57in america and we're going to continue our country's march toward a more perfect union house
00:49:02minority leader hakeem jeffries thank you for being with us thank you up next on anna cabrera reports

00:54:10welcome back hazy skies this morning for big swaths of the midwest and northeast because of smoke
00:54:15coming from canada's wildfires this is canada's second worst wildfire season on record with almost 4 000
00:54:22fires recorded already this year the smoke prompting air quality alerts from minnesota to new york with
00:54:28people advised to limit outdoor activity and out west more wildfire emergencies today marks one month
00:54:35since the wildfire in arizona's grand canyon started but it is still burning and has grown to over 120
00:54:41000 acres and in colorado evacuations and a disaster emergency for the elk fire which started burning this
00:54:48weekend after a lightning strike in montana a manhunt is intensifying this morning for the man suspected
00:54:55of opening fire at a montana bar on friday morning killing the four people inside including the bartender
00:55:01nancy loretta kelly a retired nurse who was working at the bar part-time police say suspect michael
00:55:07paul brown shed his clothes after the attack and fled the scene now police are expanding their search area
00:55:13to include a nearby national forest let's go to nbc's morgan chesky who's following the latest for
00:55:19us morgan what are officials saying about the shift in the manhunt uh ana it is still incredibly tense in
00:55:25the small town of anaconda montana this is about 25 miles to the west of butte montana and from the
00:55:32start of this shooting friday morning around 10 30 residents have been told to stay incredibly vigilant
00:55:39because that 45 year old suspect michael paul brown is still on the loose you shared a moment
00:55:45ago that photo of him this is an earlier photo of brown and then over the weekend donna authorities
00:55:51released this photo of him believed to be fleeing the scene of that crime important to note here that
00:55:57while he appears to have ditched his clothes authorities are confident that he was able to get
