00:24It's Wednesday, August 6, 2025. This is CBS News Mornings. Wildfires across America. On the front
00:36lines of California's biggest wildfire, the intense flames expanding as firefighters fear a coming heat
00:42wave and the dangerous air quality for millions of Americans. What went wrong two years after the
00:50Titan submersible imploded, killing five people on a dive to see the Titanic? A scathing new report
00:56is shedding light on a series of mistakes who the Coast Guard says is to blame. But first,
01:03the Jeffrey Epstein files. What the sex offender's co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell told the Justice
01:08Department involving President Trump.
01:11Good morning. I'm Michael George. The Trump administration is facing new pressure to release
01:19documents in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation. And there's new material to
01:25release. Transcripts from a nine-hour interview between Epstein's former associate Ghislaine Maxwell
01:30and the Justice Department. And CBS News has learned she did not implicate President Trump in any
01:36wrongdoing. All this comes as a Republican-led House panel subpoenas multiple former U.S. officials,
01:42including Bill and Hillary Clinton. CBS's Tina Krauss joins us now from London with more. Tina,
01:48good morning. Good morning, Michael. The Republican-led House Oversight Committee is turning up the heat,
01:54calling for testimony now from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary
01:59Clinton, along with a slate of ex-Justice Department officials. These new developments showing the
02:05controversy surrounding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is not going away.
02:11The congressional probe into the federal case of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is
02:15intensifying. The Republican-led House Oversight Committee has issued subpoenas for testimony
02:20from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,
02:24as well as from a slew of ex-Justice Department officials. Committee Chairman James Comer discussed the
02:30Clinton subpoenas on Fox News. Because it was voted on by Congress in a bipartisan manner,
02:36I think that'll have good standing in court. In 2019, a spokesperson for the former president said
02:41Bill Clinton had taken four trips on Epstein's plane in 2002 and 2003, but added he didn't know about
02:48Epstein's crimes. The House Committee has also subpoenaed the DOJ for more Epstein files. The panel's
02:54top Democrat on CNN. We want to get the files themselves and ensure that we get that information out and make it
03:00transparent to the public. Meanwhile, sources familiar with the matter tell CBS News Epstein's
03:04associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, did not implicate President Trump in Epstein's crimes during her
03:09recent meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Discussions are now underway over whether
03:15to make the transcript public. I didn't talk to him about it, but I will tell you that whatever he
03:20asked would be totally appropriate. President Trump, who has past ties to Epstein, has long denied
03:26any wrongdoing. Yesterday, he said he knew nothing of Maxwell's recent transfer to a minimum security
03:31prison in Texas as she fights her 20-year sentence on sex trafficking charges. President Trump has yet
03:39to rule out the possibility of pardoning Maxwell, and the House Oversight Committee wants the Justice
03:45Department to release all the Epstein-related documents by August 19th, with depositions set to
03:51take place from this month through early fall. Michael? All right, Tina Krauss in London, thanks.
03:58Well, the redistricting controversy in Texas is heading to court. Governor Greg Abbott is suing to have
04:04the state's Democratic House leader, Gene Wu, removed from office. The move follows at least 50 members of
04:11Wu's party leaving the state and heading to Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts to prevent a vote on a new
04:17Republican-drawn congressional map. President Trump has suggested the FBI should get involved to bring
04:22them back to Texas. Illinois' governor says the lawmakers are ready for a long fight.
04:28You can't just sit it out. You have to go back. You have to fight it out. That's what elections are all about.
04:33We got to fight fire with fire. They've frankly tossed the rulebook out, and they're just acting in
04:40unconstitutional fashion. Well, the Texas changes are aimed at giving Republicans five more seats in
04:46the House, spots the president told CNBC he's, quote, entitled to since he won the state in 2024.
04:54Well, now to the wildfires burning across the West. Dozens of large fires are raging across nearly a
05:01dozen states, flames threatening thousands of structures. And one of the largest is spreading
05:06rapidly about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles. And authorities fear the coming heat wave could
05:12make things even worse. And smoke from the wildfires out West and in Canada continue to impact millions
05:19of Americans with a dozen states under air quality alerts. CBS's Jason Allen has the latest from the
05:25fire zone in California. There is an all-out battle to contain this major fire in the mountains of
05:34Central California. What concerns officials here is the explosive growth of the Gifford Fire. It's now
05:40at more than 80,000 acres, the biggest wildfire in California in 2025, a year that began with two of
05:47the most destructive fires in the state's history. The Gifford Fire, at least, is burning in a remote,
05:53mostly forested section of Central California. Hundreds of structures threatened or spread out over a vast
05:58area. But erratic winds and extremely dry brush have forestry officials, like Fleming Berthelsen,
06:04on edge. It's hard to predict what the wind's going to do. And that's been that with the fuels has been
06:09the primary driver. The separation between black and green on the hillside is where firefighters have
06:14cut big fire breaks and use retardant to stop it here. But no sooner do they do that, the wind kicks
06:19up and the fire just pops up against somewhere else. Another issue, the number of large fires burning
06:24throughout the West. This stubborn wildfire in Arizona near the Grand Canyon has burned for more
06:30than a month. This time-lapse video shows its continued growth. At least three fires in Colorado,
06:36sparked by lightning, are growing quickly. This is how the Gifford Fire looks from space. The smoke is
06:43creating unhealthy air on the ground. The winds were just, you know, burning your eyes. For Dan Cobb,
06:48this wildfire is deja vu. It's helping evacuate cattle on a ranch which experienced another large fire
06:53just a few weeks ago that killed several in the herd. This has to be a risk every season. The
06:58perfect storm twice. You know, it hit a month ago and then this one came back through and took
07:03everything. The wind has been pushing the fire through these canyons and it is testing some of
07:08those containment lines. The weather isn't offering any help for the next couple of days with
07:12temperatures just expected to climb a little bit higher and keep drying out in the remaining brush
07:17and grass. Jason Allen, CBS News near Santa Maria, California.
07:22A quadruple murder suspect, Austin Drummond, is in custody after a week-long manhunt in Tennessee.
07:29Drummond was captured yesterday in Jackson, about 60 miles south of the location of last week's
07:34killings of the parents, grandmother, and uncle of an infant found abandoned in Tiptonville.
07:39His arrest came a day after he was spotted on a home security camera. Authorities have not revealed
07:45a motive for the killings, but they say Drummond's girlfriend is related to three of the victims.
07:51Well, scathing report on the catastrophic implosion of the Ocean Gate Titan submersible that killed
07:56five people heading to view the Titanic two years ago. The Coast Guard says the disaster could have
08:02been prevented and is pointing the finger directly at the company's CEO. Sunday morning's David Pogue,
08:09who once went aboard the Titan, reports on the investigation.
08:12Ocean Gate advertised the ultimate in adventure travel, a cross between cutting-edge engineering
08:19and deep-sea exploration. The disaster was entirely preventable, according to the Coast Guard Marine
08:27Board's lead investigator, Jason Neubauer. We spoke to him via Zoom.
08:31Ocean Gate could have done maintenance and some monitoring of the danger signals,
08:38the warning signs that the hull was giving off. Take your shoes off. In the summer of 2022,
08:43so this is not your grandfather's submersible. We were invited on that submersible with Ocean Gate
08:48CEO Stockton Rush for a CBS Sunday morning story. He was killed in the disaster. Are you making money
08:55on this operation? Uh, no. So, not yet. There were signs of cost-cutting even then.
09:03So, it seems like a lot of the way you made this is by taking off-the-shelf parts and sort of
09:09MacGyvering them together. Yeah, pretty much. Does that not raise anybody's eyebrows in the industry?
09:15Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, no, I'm definitely an outlier. Yeah. At some point, you're going to
09:20take some risk, and it really is a risk-reward question. I said, I think I can do this just as
09:23safely by breaking the rules. The report identifies at least a dozen factors that contributed to the
09:29implosion of the sub about 11,000 feet below sea level near the wreckage of the Titanic. Ocean Gate
09:35dismissed warnings about the sub's design, stored it all winter exposed to the elements, and operated
09:41in an unregulated gray area in international waters. Do you think anything that Ocean Gate
09:48and Stockton Rush did could be classified as deceptive, for example, to customers? Yes, I do. I
09:55think from a common-sense standpoint, there would be an expectation that the vessel was being maintained,
10:01at least to the ability that they could, you know, to be kept safe. Nothing can bring back the victims,
10:07but for their families, the Coast Guard report may bring some answers. David Pogue, CBS News, New York.
10:15Well, a somber remembrance today in Japan.
10:23Today marks 80 years since the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later,
10:29a second atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki. More than 200,000 people were killed. Today, Hiroshima's mayor
10:37warned about the dangers of potential nuclear wars amid conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
10:43Well, coming up, deadly disaster. Flash floods and massive mudslides crash into a village in India.
10:50And hate crime investigation, the anti-Semitic incident targeting a resident in a St. Louis suburb.
10:56Years of hard work, decades of dedication, committed to giving back. You've been there, done that, and you're still here for more.
11:15So now that you're 50 or older and at increased risk for pneumococcal pneumonia and IPD,
11:20be proactive with Capvaxiv, a vaccine specifically designed for adults to help protect against pneumonia
11:26and invasive disease caused by certain types of pneumococcal bacteria.
11:30Capvaxiv is the only vaccine that helps protect against the strains that cause 84% of IPD in adults 50 or older,
11:36compared with up to 52% by other pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.
11:40Don't get Capvaxiv if you're allergic to the vaccine or its ingredients.
11:43Tell your doctor if you have a weakened immune system.
11:46Common side effects include injection site reactions, feeling tired, headache, muscle aches, and fever.
11:51Whether you've had another pneumococcal vaccine or not, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Capvaxiv.

12:59Flash floods and mudslides have killed at least four people
13:04and trapped others under debris and rubble in northern India.
13:08Video showed floodwaters surging down a mountain
13:11and crashing into a Himalayan mountain village.
13:14Authorities say it destroyed roads and swept away homes and businesses.
13:18Rescuers are searching for dozens of people missing.
13:22The parents of a man killed by police file a lawsuit and a deadly plane crash.
13:26Those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand.
13:30The Arizona Republic says four people were killed
13:32when a medical transport plane crashed and caught fire.
13:36The dual propeller aircraft was heading to pick up a patient from a hospital yesterday
13:40when it went down in the Navajo Nation
13:42while trying to land at the Chinle Airport in northern Arizona.
13:46All four people on board the plane, two pilots and two medical personnel, were killed.
13:51The Colorado Sun says two parents are suing an Aurora police officer
13:56after their son was shot and killed during a struggle.
13:59The lawsuit claims Officer Brandon Mills shot Rashad Johnson in May when he posed no threat.
14:06It also claims Mills held Johnson at gunpoint while he was bleeding on the ground
14:10for about five minutes without trying to help.
14:13Mills told another officer Johnson tried to disarm him.
14:16The suit also accuses Aurora police of failing to end racially discriminatory policing.
14:22And the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says police in the suburb of Clayton, Missouri
14:26are investigating three vehicles set on fire as hate crimes.
14:31Authorities say the vehicles were discovered burning yesterday.
14:34A source confirmed the resident who was specifically targeted
14:37has ties to the Israel Defense Forces.
14:40Anti-Semitic graffiti was painted on the street,
14:42including the words,
14:43death to the IDF.
14:45Police say they have a suspect, but no arrests have been made.
14:50Well, up next, Bear Scare,
14:52an NHL player and team's mascot,

25:35did not implicate President Trump in any wrongdoing during her recent nine-hour Justice Department interview.
25:41Meanwhile, a Republican-led House committee has subpoenaed several former officials to testify about the Epstein case,
25:49including former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton.
25:52And toxic smoke from wildfires in the United States and Canada continues to impact millions of Americans,
25:59with a dozen states under air quality alerts.
26:02Hazy skies are expected to blanket cities from Minnesota into Vermont through tomorrow.
26:07And the air quality in Chicago, Detroit, and New York are currently considered among the worst in the world.
26:13Well, finally this morning, more than 100,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma this year.
26:20But now that treatments have advanced, death rates have declined.
26:24And as CBS's Jenna DeAngelis shows us, diagnostic tools have also greatly improved to detect and monitor skin cancers.
26:31I noticed a spot on my face that was new and rapidly changing.
26:37But Jackie Mills says her dermatologist at that time wasn't that concerned.
26:41I felt like it was getting bigger, changing colors, it was more jagged, and I really had to push and advocate for myself.
26:48I just had a gut feeling that something was wrong.
26:51Mills was finally diagnosed with melanoma and had Mohs surgery to have the spot removed.
26:56I had to kind of take it in for a minute and be like, I'm going to have a scar on my face for the rest of my life.
27:02It was that, or not be here.
27:05Now she's checked every six months and also has her spot scrutinized with this new machine.
27:10This is what we call the Vectra WB-180 system.
27:14We use 26 cameras to photograph the entire body.
27:17And then the system takes all of these photos and stitches them together into a three-dimensional avatar.
27:23Dr. Jonathan Unger, who is the medical director of the Wallman Melanoma and Skin Center at Mount Sinai,
27:28says this takes just a matter of seconds instead of all the time necessary to photograph each individual spot.
27:35We can always look back and say, what did this thing look like? Was it there?
27:38There are additional benefits to this technology as well.
27:41In our practice, it's really reduced the number of biopsies because a lot of our patients have hundreds,
27:46if not more than that, moles, all of which are irregular.
27:49This allows us to have a higher level of confidence about what we're looking at and making a decision about.
27:54Not only is Dr. Unger looking at my spots, but he's using this machine to mathematically track what's going on from year to year.
28:01It gives me the ability to take a deep breath and not be constantly worried about melanoma coming back.
28:06And if we haven't said it before, use sunscreen every day.
28:10It can help prevent sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.
