Opera wants AI to run on your laptop, not in a data center.
On October 27, 2026, Opera launched WebAI, an early preview that lets websites and browser extensions use AI models running locally inside the browser. Opera says there is no separate AI app to install, no local server to set up and no API key to get.
The privacy angle, according to Opera: because the AI runs on your own computer, the content it processes does not need to be sent to a cloud AI provider. WebAI is opt-in, and nothing is downloaded until you turn it on.
TechCrunch reports that WebAI works with open-weight models such as Google's Gemma, and that on Macs it also supports Apple's on-device foundation model. Opera describes WebAI as a proposed web standard backed by companies including Google and Microsoft.
How to try it (per Opera): go to Settings, then Opera AI, and turn on "Enable Web AI API". It downloads a compatible local model first, which can take a few minutes. The early preview runs on 64-bit Windows PCs (Intel/AMD) and Macs with Apple silicon, not on Intel Macs, Linux or Windows on Arm. Speed depends on your hardware.
