India's armed forces are getting a homegrown AI partner. 🇮🇳🛡️
On October 26, 2026, India's Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS, Ministry of Defence) announced a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bengaluru-based AI company Sarvam. Sarvam made it public on October 27, as reported by ThePrint, Moneycontrol, India Today and The Times of India.
What the reports say:
• The MoU sets up an umbrella framework for AI projects across the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, plus joint and tri-service organisations under HQ IDS.
• Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI applications for operational, training and decision-support needs, and provide follow-on technical support.
• According to the company, focus areas include decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the "sensor-to-shooter loop", with human oversight retained on operational decisions.
• The work will be carried out by Chanakya, which Sarvam describes as its firewalled national-security and defence division, using Sarvam's own AI stack, including its Sarvam 105B model. Sarvam says the AI layer will be built in India and deployed on sovereign infrastructure.
• Neither side disclosed the financial value, the number of projects or a deployment timeline.
