Microsoft has offered about 60,000 employees a way out, and India is on the list.

On Monday, October 26, 2026, Microsoft announced a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) in a memo from Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, posted on its official blog. Microsoft says the time-limited, voluntary offer covers eligible employees in participating teams in the US, Canada, the UK and India, at level 70 and below. Business Insider reports sales organizations, certain engineering teams and some corporate functions are excluded.

CNBC, citing a person familiar with the matter, says around 60,000 people are eligible, about 27% of roughly 223,000 employees; Business Insider says a Microsoft spokesperson gave the same figure. That counts people eligible, not people expected to leave (The Indian Express). Employees reportedly decide by early December and leave on December 31; terms are reported to be similar to standard severance.

Microsoft gave no single reason (Ars Technica). CNBC says it is balancing a costly AI build-out with capital efficiency; Reuters and The New York Times reported a capex forecast of about $175 billion for calendar 2026.

Timeline (as reported):
May 13, 2025: about 6,000 layoffs, nearly 3% of staff (CNBC, AP)
July 2, 2025: about 9,000 job cuts (CNBC, Reuters)
April 23, 2026: first voluntary retirement program, about 7% of US staff eligible (CNBC, Bloomberg); more than 30% of those eligible took it, Microsoft said
July 6, 2026: about 4,800 roles eliminated, about 2.1% of the workforce, with an Xbox overhaul (Microsoft, Reuters, CNBC)
October 26, 2026: Voluntary Exit Offer, around 60,000 eligible
