More than 300 Boston Dynamics employees signed a petition asking executives to halt a sale of modified Spot robot dogs for ICE. The company is standing by the deal.
What was reported:
• Oct 26, 2026: Ars Technica reported that the petition had more than 300 signatures, about half of them anonymous. The Boston Globe and WBUR first reported it on Oct 23, 2026.
• According to Ars Technica, on Sept 25, 2026 the Department of Homeland Security awarded a $1.3 million contract to Radeco, a Connecticut company, to supply ICE with four modified Spot robots (marketed by Radeco as "Cerberus").
• The petition, sent to executives in early September, says the deal "presents us as working directly with ICE" and that the risk is "simply too great to continue with this deal" (as quoted by the Boston Globe and WBUR).
• Boston Dynamics' response: a spokesperson told Ars Technica that "Spot robots are tools that help keep people out of harm's way." The company says its terms of sale prohibit weaponizing the robot or using it to harm or intimidate. Interim CEO Amanda McMaster told staff the company is standing behind the decision, per the Globe and WBUR. The company says the signers are a minority of its workforce.
• Homeland Security told the Globe the robot "provides law enforcement officers with an additional tool to safely assess potentially dangerous situations."
