A robot dog, steered by living human neurons. Here is what was actually reported, and what wasn't.
On October 26, 2026, New Scientist reported that Melbourne start-up Cortical Labs used its CL1 biological computer to control the movements of a robotic dog. The CL1 runs on real neurons grown on a chip; New Scientist says the neurons come from stem cells derived from human blood.
According to New Scientist, the CL1 was first trained to navigate toward a target in a simulated 2D environment, and that training data was then used to control a real robotic dog.
The underlying research paper (arXiv 2605.13315, Cortical Labs with Honda Research Institute Europe) reports testing about 1,300 parameter settings over more than 4,000 hours of real-time interaction. Twelve settings consistently showed learning, and the paper says they beat optimised conventional (DQN) AI agents given the same amount of interaction.
The researchers call this an initial step. New Atlas (October 20, 2026) notes that keeping living cells alive, and the energy used by the support hardware, are still open challenges.
