00:00Good morning, everybody.
00:01How you doing?
00:02Great.
00:02How are you?
00:04I'm good.
00:05I'm still recovering.
00:06I was at the University of Michigan, my old alma mater,
00:09this past weekend for parents' weekend,
00:11and you should have seen our old asses trying to hang with our kids.
00:15Oh, my God.
00:17We was living it up.
00:19I had a good time.
00:20But it was kind of bittersweet because, I mean, I got to say this
00:24because a good friend of mine just passed away on Friday.
00:26I was on a plane to Detroit.
00:28My captain of my state championship football team,
00:31he passed away from a massive heart attack.
00:34And so I couldn't enjoy it like I wanted to, but, you know,
00:38I got my mind back right and, you know, tried to be there for my son.
00:43But it was crazy.
00:44But he passed doing something that he loved.
00:46He was a high school football coach.
00:48And he passed, had a massive heart attack on the sideline.
00:52Sorry.
00:52Sorry, Ty.
00:54But anyway, he's, you know what?
00:57Rest in peace, Big Ed.
00:58But let's go on with the show, guys.
01:00Let's go.
01:00Let me ask you, were you able to out-party any of the kids?
01:07You know what?
01:07I think we held our own.
01:09Our parents held their own.
01:11And it was a couple of them out there.
01:14And puked, man.
01:16It was hilarious.
01:17I was like, no, you can't come in here and puke, man.
01:20And I said, we got to show out as parents, man.
01:24I'm like, damn.
01:24So I represented for the law family.
01:27I'll tell you that.
01:30All right.
01:31Well, we haven't spoken to you since that game Thursday night.
01:36And it really, you know, I hate saying it comes down to one play because there's a whole lot going
01:43on.
01:43But, you know, Drake threw that interception in the end zone there.
01:48And just an unfortunate situation.
01:52Wiggy said this week that it was a bad throw, not a bad decision on Drake's part.
01:59You would agree with that?
02:01Yeah, I 100% agree with Wiggy on that one.
02:04I mean, I see where he was going with it.
02:05It just wasn't a Drake Mayish type throw.
02:09Except when you get down into the red, though.
02:11So we got to be critical as well.
02:12But, I mean, he played a masterful game, especially with the offensive line.
02:17I mean, they were blitzing them like crazy.
02:20I think, again, I'm going to say it.
02:22Every time the offensive line doesn't do well, I'm going to say it's a guy by the name of Dante
02:26Skarniecki.
02:27And he's still local.
02:28Call him on in.
02:29Poach him up a little bit.
02:31But, you know, Drake Mayish, he played a masterful game.
02:34And it's being overshadowed by the interception.
02:37You know what I mean?
02:37He played a great game.
02:39I think he had a passer rating of 117.
02:41I mean, he used his legs.
02:42But that wasn't the best throw.
02:45Right decision, but not a good throw.
02:46And it's a shame that we got to be talking about them.
02:49Because I think that was a very key play, you know, in the outcome of the game.
02:53All right, Ty.
02:54This one goes out to my boy, Jamie D.
02:55Who's up the Heights listening.
02:57Why so much, like, space in the passing game and secondary?
03:02It seemed like guys were running free.
03:04And there was nobody around them.
03:06Especially on, like, the dig routes.
03:09I'm glad you said that, Wiggy.
03:11Because I was damn sure going to bring it up, whether you said it or not.
03:14You got to play better coverage than that.
03:17Understand the situation.
03:19Marcus Jones, as great as you are, with the running and the kicks and all that.
03:23But understand the situation of football.
03:26It is second and one.
03:28Why are you nine yards off of a tight end?
03:31A stick and catch and you got the first out.
03:33You got to try to hold them to a field goal.
03:34So, I mean, on the touchdown play, like, why are you so far off in that situation?
03:41Where is the tight coverage?
03:42Where is the man coverage?
03:44I don't understand that whatsoever.
03:46So, I know Mike Rabel is definitely going to be inside the DB meeting room this week.
03:52He got to be because that is not competing.
03:56And I don't like it as great as Christian Gonzalez is and all the guys.
04:01And they play some good ball.
04:03But when you can't go out there and get off the field on third and long as hell, something is
04:09wrong.
04:10You're not competing.
04:11Ty, when you get a mini bye week like they have right now, what are they able to accomplish?
04:17Do they, as a player, like, do you watch all those games?
04:20Are you watching the Miami game?
04:21Are you able to self-scout a little bit during that time?
04:25Oh, you absolutely.
04:26I mean, you got to reflect on how you let this one get away because I think that was a
04:30very winnable game, you know, for the Patriots.
04:33But the good thing, you got Miami.
04:37Oh, we go, hey, you can get right back on track with this team.
04:40You can't lose to Miami even though it's a division game.
04:43It's always tough, but they are not playing good football right now.
04:47So we can get right back on track, and this is the perfect game to do so.
04:51Well, Courtney, before I get to my question, I remember seeing Ty Law and Lawyer Malloy with big Cuban cigars
04:56on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November of 2000.
05:02You guys had just played the Lions on Thanksgiving.
05:04BC lost 52-6 to Miami.
05:06I was at the game with my dad.
05:08It was really bad.
05:08That was with the height of the U.
05:10And I was like, why are they all so happy?
05:12They just lost.
05:12But it's like, they need a couple days of R&R.
05:15Give them an easy time.
05:16But anyway, what do you make of just the, I don't know how to describe it, the way in which
05:26the Patriots were able to make it close against the Bears but fall short, going ahead here to Miami?
05:33Is this team, in your view, around the top of the AFC still?
05:38Or do you think 4-3, they're more of a middle-of-the-pack team this year?
05:43Or they have still had a lot more to prove this season compared to their Super Bowl run?
05:47I think they're still at the top of the pack.
05:50You're going to have games like this.
05:51You've got to learn to win these tough games.
05:53But they fought.
05:54I give the Patriots a lot of credit for fighting.
05:57It's just the situational football that they've got to do better at, especially in the secondary.
06:03We've got our quarterback, guys.
06:06I mean, he's going to, it's not going to be perfect, but he, if he continues to play like that,
06:12minus the mistakes, the Patriots are going to be in contention for a playoff run.
06:16I really believe that.
06:18And then they got the right-hand coach to do so.
06:21So anything that you see as far as mistakes and what they could have done better, best believe Mike Brable,
06:26he's going to address it this week.
06:28And they're going to do a lot of situational practice.
06:30I can guarantee you that because right now they don't seem to be thinking.
06:35They're not aware of the surroundings a lot of times.
06:37You know how it is.
06:38We play situational practice pretty much all the time.
06:44Where is the situational awareness?
06:47You know, and what's crazy, Ty, and I can't remember, I asked this question to somebody or a former player,
06:54might have been Hoyer or something.
06:57I just feel like guys now today, I don't feel like they're knowledgeable of the game of like situations, what's
07:08going on.
07:09And I understand the coaches might not have a lot of time to work with these guys.
07:13But I feel like it's still on you as a player to understand situations.
07:18Like, and it's the basic things, whether it's a third and short and a defensive lineman jumps offside.
07:23Like, I feel like that's something everybody who plays defense should know.
07:28Like, do you feel like that?
07:29Yeah, I'm right they should know.
07:30You are in the pros.
07:31But do you feel like.
07:32In the NFL, it's the highest level.
07:34You got the, you got the, the coach shouldn't have to tell you certain things.
07:38That's, that's my point.
07:39So, he has to address it now because you failed to address it as a player on the field.
07:44But do you feel like these guys are not putting in the time we put in when they're leaving the
07:48facilities to become smarter and better football players mentally?
07:54I mean, what they're showing on the field when you, on decision, when you have to make a decision right
08:00now, down in distance, they are not putting in the time.
08:03You can't be putting in the time because certain things are just obvious as football players, as former players.
08:08We're looking at it like, what are you doing?
08:10Right, right, right off, as soon as you, as soon as you line up, you're not disguising it.
08:14You're not doing anything.
08:15You're just, you know, taking yourself out of it and giving them a play when it's a third down.
08:21Like, how could you give up third and forever that many times?
08:25You know what I mean?
08:26How could a guy get 32 yards of catch?
08:29Where's the coverage?
08:30We got, we got a hundred and something million dollars, 160 million dollars for the cornerback out there now.
08:37Let's keep it 100.
08:39You got, you got the play.
08:40You can't give up that.
08:43Ty, are you?
08:44I got fired immediately if I gave up 134, 134 yards passing on four catches.
08:52Come on, man.
08:54Speaking of come on, man, are you tired?
08:56Are you concerned at all about A.J. Brown going forward?
09:02You know what?
09:04I'm not, I'm going to give it one more week before we get too great because he's, I mean,
09:07he's earned a little bit of leeway, but there are expectations around here.
09:12You are, you are that guy.
09:14I mean, all that talk.
09:15I was excited, but the production isn't there right now.
09:20I don't know.
09:21He looks a little big, don't he, Wiggy?
09:23At the one curl rod he ran, I was like, all right, is his ankle or does he looks like
09:28a little slow?
09:29Like he running in a little bit of mud right there.
09:31That was the concern about him going back.
09:33Yeah, I mean, you know.
09:34But I'm not the fastest guy.
09:37So, I mean, but I'm just saying now, we expected more out of A.J. Brown.
09:41I think we got to get him the ball early, you know, to get his, you know, get his mojo
09:47back, something like that.
09:48You know, that deep ball that he threw to him, that was a catchable ball.
09:52In my opinion, you're A.J. Brown.
09:53Now, you got to catch that.
09:54So, right now, he's not living up to our expectations, but they're still in it.
09:59It's a long way to go, but he has to be the guy.
10:02He definitely has to be the guy.
10:04When you bring him in and all this hoopla, you know, you got to step up, A.J., and we
10:08waiting for it.
10:09Ty, you and Wiggy have insight into something we were talking about earlier that we don't have.
10:15We were talking about Paul Pierce and this news today that, sadly, Paul Pierce is broke, to explain it in
10:25layman's terms.
10:28How difficult is it?
10:30And so, Courtney, Shime, the listeners, everybody's like, wait a minute, you made $200 million in your NBA career.
10:38How do you not have any of that left?
10:42It is difficult, I'm assuming, when you're playing to necessarily hang on to that money.
10:51It's very difficult.
10:52I mean, none of us got the same amount of money when you was getting that check every two weeks
10:56like that.
10:57You've been wondering, when you've been out of the game, you know, a long time and people don't get it,
11:02they just think that, you know, the average person says, yeah, it's a lot of money.
11:07You know, absolutely, don't get me wrong.
11:09But people don't consider the taxes, you know, the agents, the lawyers, the divorces, the child support, and things like
11:18that.
11:20Things happen.
11:21You know, when was the last time Paul played?
11:23It's been a long time.
11:24It's been a long time.
11:25You know what I mean?
11:25That's not that long.
11:27But, Ty, the thing I said is that a lot of us come from situations where we weren't educated with
11:33money.
11:33So we get this money, and the lifestyle that we live changes, right?
11:38Because that's everybody's human nature.
11:40When you make more money, you spend more.
11:41And we're not educated about how to invest properly.
11:45Some people steal from us and financial planners.
11:48And I think that, to me, is the biggest thing is that if the education doesn't start out when we're
11:53young
11:53and we don't see people around us with money, we don't necessarily know how to handle it until we make
11:59a bunch of mistakes.
12:01Right, right.
12:01And as players, you have your financial advisors, and we don't always listen to our advisors.
12:08Because as an athlete, you're thinking you're invincible at times.
12:11Oh, I got it.
12:11I'll be all right.
12:12I'll be back next year.
12:13The next time, next thing you know, you know that you're cut.
12:16And then you also go through the survivor's remorse.
12:19And we've all lived that way because now, because you made it, guess what?
12:24As a family, they think we made it.
12:27And we fall into that and feel guilty about being successful, working hard, and we've got to bring the whole
12:34family with us.
12:35You know, every problem becomes your problem.
