"Bring it on!" Calling out the cornerbacks! What does
Ty Law think of the JSN/Gonzo matchup? "That's why you are here Gonzo" NFL HoF Ty Law joins!
Transcript
00:00Good morning. Good morning, everybody. Don't you feel good?
00:02Cold out there.
00:03Oh, I mean, I'm warm now. Hey, man, we're going to Super Bowl.
00:06Yeah, we're going to Super Bowl.
00:08It doesn't feel good, doesn't it?
00:09Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
00:10I mean, out of nowhere, too. You know, four wins last season, and what a turnaround.
00:15I mean, I don't know if it's ever been a turnaround like this in NFL history.
00:19You know, now, shout out to Sean. He called it out earlier when none of us really believed.
00:23I don't know about Super Bowl, but, you know, Vrave did his thing.
00:26And Drake May, hopefully, they still consider him for the MVP, man, because he's in the Super Bowl.
00:32Yeah, I'm going to say it again. It ain't all about the flash and the numbers.
00:35I understand that Stafford might be the number one guy, but I still say Drake May, he'd be holding up that trophy, man,
00:42because he did something absolutely incredible.
00:44Well, and you'll love it, Ty, because I think the one thing that you look at with this Patriots run,
00:48and we were just talking about it, they've been able to win games because of their defense, you know,
00:52and you've been a part of, you know, a number of Super Bowls where it was built by the defense,
00:57and the quarterback's job is, hey, don't make any boneheaded mistakes,
01:01and when we need you to make a play, make a play.
01:04And I think that's what they're built on now.
01:07I mean, even though Drake May, he's the guy.
01:10He can use his arm.
01:11He can use his legs, which was incredible.
01:13And I think the defense is very opportunistic.
01:16I mean, they take advantage of certain opportunities, and that's a good thing.
01:19I mean, they give up some plays here and there, but, you know, that's expected.
01:23The other guys get paid, too, on the other side of the ball,
01:26but the defense has been stepping up in big ways.
01:28It did seem like Mike Rabel at the end of that one on Sunday, though,
01:31had so much confidence in the defense that he was like,
01:33Drake, just make sure to not give up the ball and turn it over
01:37because the defense will be able to handle this Broncos offense.
01:39Yeah, absolutely.
01:40But, I mean, let's be honest.
01:41The conditions and the weather, I mean, you really want to lean on your defense.
01:45I mean, I think on both sides of the ball.
01:46So, when you get inclement weather like that, you know that there's going to be
01:51very few chances to really throw the ball effectively.
01:55You know what I mean?
01:55You just don't want to give it up.
01:56You won't be able to do that a week from Sunday.
01:59Oh, no, no.
02:01It's a different ball game, different strategy now.
02:04And defense wins championships.
02:06We have to step up as a defense, and I'm calling out them cornerbacks right now.
02:12Gonzo, you are him.
02:14You are him.
02:15I'm Jackson Smith.
02:16What did you say?
02:17Injigma?
02:17That's what you're saying.
02:18Did I say it right?
02:19Yeah.
02:20I mean, that boy can play, but guess what?
02:22That's why you're here, Gonzo.
02:24I mean, you're the number one guy.
02:26I'm not the coach.
02:27I'm just throwing it out there to the atmosphere because I will tell him the same thing.
02:31You need to go on in the coach's office.
02:34Gonzo, I mean, and say, look, wherever he go, I'm going.
02:38If he go to the damn bathroom, I'm going to the next stall, and I'm going to wait for you.
02:42You know what I mean?
02:43So that's just how it is when you're talking about these type of massives because you can't let someone in the Super Bowl get 150 yards or 100-plus yards.
02:52And I think he's the man to say, you know what?
02:55This is my team right now.
02:56This is my defense.
02:58Hey, bring it on.
02:58Well, and to give him credit, they have been, like you listen to Sean Payton talk about that play choice when it came to going for it as opposed to taking the points on the field goal.
03:09And the defense caught them completely off guard.
03:12They have been doing that all season long when it comes to what they're in.
03:16So, you know, I feel great about this defense.
03:21The only concern I have is the offense able to get it together early and put up enough points.
03:26Yeah, it is.
03:27And they got a pass rush.
03:28So you got to think about the gauntlet that this offense is now seeing defensively now even going into the Super Bowl.
03:35I mean, the offensive line, they got to hold up.
03:36Yeah.
03:36You know, absolutely got to hold up.
03:38You got to understand, they're going to make some plays, and you can't slip on the Seattle's run game either.
03:42So I think they are a complete team as well is who's going to take advantage of the turnovers.
03:48And I think special teams is going to be a factor this game as well.
03:52Well, the biggest thing for me with this game, when I look at it, I think this game is going to be won by one of the two quarterbacks.
03:58And the guy that starts the game and gets that confidence, and you could see in his play, he doesn't need to go out there and throw for 280 yards and three touchdowns.
04:08But the one that is taking advantage, because you have two very good defenses that are going to make things difficult, which quarterback is going to be the guy that steps up and makes those plays and makes it early to give that team that momentum they need?
04:22I think if anyone is going to be Drake May, I really do, because he has that X factor where he can use his legs.
04:31I don't think we've seen Sam Darnold do as much with his legs.
04:35So if you can make him more of a one-dimensional guy, I think we have the advantage in Drake May for the simple fact that he can use his legs.
04:43Does it worry you, though, that Sam Darnold's playing the best ball we've seen him play while Drake May is not?
04:48Yeah, I mean, yes, I mean, he's playing good ball, so you have to take your hat off to him.
04:52But, you know, look at his receivers.
04:55I mean, JSN, he can play, and then you've got a savvy veteran in Cooper Cup.
04:59So that's where it's going to be the challenge at as far as the secondary is concerned, because, yes, they can set you up by running the ball with Kenneth Walker III,
05:08but those receivers out there, they can be a big play at any time.
05:11That's why I say from, you know, the cornerback position, which we have a lot of invested in our secondary and the cornerbacks,
05:18and I expect them to go out there and have a good game.
05:20I expect Gonzo to take out JSN, or at least slow him down.
05:25You know, my attitude is take his ass out.
05:28But you've got to, let's be realistic, slow him down.
05:31You can't do that.
05:32And then on the other end, Cooper Cup, he can play, but I think we can handle him one-on-one as well.
05:37But you have to win a one-on-one matchup in the secondary.
05:39You went to a Super Bowl and lost your first time.
05:42Right.
05:43Then went to three others and won those.
05:44What about that experience the second time to the Super Bowl?
05:48What did you wish you knew the first time?
05:49How does playing at a Super Bowl differ in comparison to every other game you're going to play?
05:56I think, one, I think the AFC Championship game, that's when you're the most nervous.
06:03The Championship weekend is the most nervous you're going to be in football, because that's the game to go to the Super Bowl.
06:08It's the Super Bowl experience.
06:10You have that time.
06:11You have a lot of time of everybody talking.
06:14You just can't get to the game.
06:15You've got two whole weeks, yes, to prepare, which is a good thing, but it's the time in between the game, the commercials, and it's like, oh, man, everything that you do.
06:24If I make a mistake, oh, you know what?
06:26That's going to be on ESPN.
06:28That's going to be magnified a thousand times.
06:31But the game is so much longer, and then you get to halftime.
06:35So I can't – now, if I'm out there enjoying the show, you know, it's one thing, but I couldn't stay in halftime as a player because it's so damn long.
06:44You want to get going.
06:45So, I mean, it's like the Super Bowl is just – I mean, it's ching, ching, ching, ching.
06:50It's checks coming in everywhere, so everybody got to get their TV time.
06:53But as players, you tend to cool down a little bit, man.
06:57You want to stay, you know, in the moment.
06:58But it's more than just the game.
07:01It's the spectacle, and that's what, you know, you got to love about the Super Bowl.
07:05But as a player, that's something that you really don't like because you just want to go out there and play ball.
07:10But the thing is, I think you're supposed to be – I mean, I will be more comfortable in the Super Bowl, to be honest with you, than the AFC Championship.
07:18The one thing that I felt, like, in the Super Bowl is the clock watching, right?
07:25Because you're like, all right, dude, you know, all right.
07:28Because I remember against the Rams, we're like, all right, we're up.
07:31We're up 10.
07:32Yeah.
07:32We're up 10.
07:33What's the clock at?
07:33What's the clock at?
07:34Like, are they going to make a play?
07:36Are they coming back?
07:36So you're constantly clock watching.
07:38Or if you're down, you're like, oh, my God, we're down.
07:40Do we have enough time?
07:41Are we going to get another possession?
07:43So those –
07:44And you're not like that playoff game or regular season game.
07:46No, you're not really – you're not like that during the regular – surely not during the regular season.
07:51It picks up as the playoffs go.
07:53But when you get to the Super Bowl, because, you know, if you've got, like, a seven-point lead, you're like, all right, clock, keep going, keep going.
07:58Because, you know, this is where you feel like, all right, you want to win.
08:01And in the Super Bowl, we had a lead early, but then the Rams started to chip their way back.
08:07And you start looking at that clock, and it seems like, man, that thing ain't going as fast as it was going.
08:11And that's the thing.
08:13You start to see that.
08:14And that's the only focus that you might have is the clock watching, and you've got to get yourself out of that.
08:19Right.
08:20And it's the TV timeouts alone.
08:21I mean, you're going to get so many more timeouts than you would any other game.
08:25But, again, the last two teams standing at the Super Bowl, there's a sense of relief.
08:32Again, the AFC Championship, that's when everything is, you know, so much tight.
08:36It's like, oh, man, we're trying to get to the Super Bowl.
08:38So now you're here, go through all the hoopla, the media days, those obligations are a pain in the ass.
08:44But at the same time, it comes with the territory.
08:46And go out there and play some football.
08:48I was fortunate that I, when I played in the two Super Bowl, one, we only had a week, the first Super Bowl.
08:55Yeah.
08:55So we didn't really have to deal with as much hoopla.
08:59The second one, when I was on Carolina and we played New England, we had two weeks.
09:02And you could definitely, like, you could feel that, like, all right, when's the game going to get here?
09:08What about halftime of that one?
09:09More famous than the game itself with the wardrobe malfunction.
09:12Yeah, I mean, yeah, I wouldn't know.
09:14Yeah, we were in the –
09:15Dan Jackson.
09:16That was the wardrobe malfunction?
09:17Yes.
09:18Yeah, we were inside.
09:18We were clueless on that.
09:21Yeah.
09:21Wiggy went back and reviewed it, right?
09:23He reviewed it several times on YouTube.
09:28I'm like, damn, I missed that.
09:29He missed it at the time.
09:30Yeah.
09:31If there is so much added pressure, though, when it comes to whether it's the time in between the two weeks, in between the media days, the way in which the game is actually played, because we have so many guys that have not been to a Super Bowl, does that worry you at all?
09:43That the lights might be too bright, it might be all too much?
09:48Or can Vrabel handle that with everybody?
09:50Well, it's the same – Seahawks, same situation.
09:52Yeah.
09:52The concern I would have, and Ty, you know, would obviously know this as well, we played in a different – this is why I asked for it.
09:59We played in a different era, so we didn't have social media.
10:02We didn't have our phones.
10:03Right.
10:04Nowadays, like, these guys can see everything, do everything right in their phones.
10:08We didn't have – we had flip phones, and, like, that was it, you know?
10:11So I think that might, you know, keep them focused.
10:14Yeah, and I will say that I agree.
10:17You know, with this whole new generation of the era, you know, we had our cameras where you – you got to edit this yourself later.
10:24You know what I mean?
10:24I mean, everything right now was so instant.
10:27I think, you know, depending on what type of team you have in the culture, are you more interested in, you know, social media and putting out this tweet and showing everybody?
10:34Are you staying focused on the game?
10:36So I think it was easier for us to focus on the game because once we did the media, that's when you seen the cameras come out and you had your big camera on your shoulder.
10:44There you go.
10:45Yeah, you know, man, hey, hey, hey, hey, man, hey, take me on this, send this to me however you can.
10:49But now everything is so instant, so I just – hopefully that Vrabel keeps everybody – hey, we have a game to win.
10:56You know, let's not get caught up in the social media and things like that because I think it can be a distraction.
11:01Ty Law is with us.
11:02We are at Gillette Stadium on a tie Tuesday and a Patriots Monday on a tie Tuesday.
11:07And time to get this week's Drake Take from Utah Law presented by your New England Chevy dealers.
11:12Together, let's drive.
11:13We talked – we've talked about him and whether it's taken a while to get going in these games.
11:19Or we talked to Mike Vrabel about his completion percentage, 55 at the playoffs, 72 regular season.
11:28Any takes from you when it comes to Drake and what you saw from him?
11:31He's still young, and I give him the benefit of the doubt.
11:34He got it to this point, but he is still young, I think, because he has such a great season that we kind of take his youth for granted.
11:43Overlook that.
11:43Overlook that, you know what I mean?
11:44But he's going to be all right.
11:46I mean, he had his fumble.
11:48He went through that.
11:49You don't want it to happen now.
11:50Usually, when you start losing the ball, you turn the ball, you learn from it.
11:54You know, and I think he's that type of competitor.
11:55So, I think Drake is going to be just fine.
11:58And I say the key is going to be him using his legs as well.
12:02And I think we'll be just fine.
12:05We're going to win the Super Bowl.
12:06Is your most proud moment the pick six against the Rams in Super Bowl 36?
12:11I mean, because you're the only game in town, and it was such a pivotal play to so-called start the dynasty.
12:20I mean, the pressure by Vrabel.
12:22So, both of the guests today, you throw that.
12:24Oh, absolutely.
12:25I always give Vrabel the credit for that.
12:26I was just the recipient of one of the easiest interceptions in my life.
12:30But it was all costs for Mike Vrabel.
12:32So, it was just as much as his pick is mine.
12:36But, again, the best game for me was the AFC Championship game.
12:41I'm telling you, that is the game that everyone is fired up for and intense because you're trying to make it to the Super Bowl.
12:47So, you should have a sense of relief, understanding the magnitude of the game.
12:51Of course, you want to win.
12:53But getting there, you can just go out and play football now, man.
12:56We are the last two teams.
12:58Whoever has a good game plan and, you know, stay focused throughout the week, you know, you have a chance to win.
13:04And getting guys to understand.
13:06And I think, like, when you're in the moment, you don't think about this, like, how difficult it is to be where you are.
13:12Right.
13:13And then it just ain't going to happen again.
13:14You know, and I think, you know, getting those guys to realize that.
13:18So, take advantage of this moment when your opportunity comes, where it's the interception or, you know, pressuring the quarterback.
13:25Because we might not be back here next year.
13:28You know, even though we feel good about it.
13:30Bite your tongue.
13:31No, but that's the reality of it.
13:34And players in that moment don't think about that.
13:37No, when we lost in Green Bay the first time, I just knew because we were young that I would be back the next year and the next year.
13:44And fortunately, you know, we got a chance to go back a few more times.
13:48But I always use the example of Dan Marino.
13:50He made it so early in his career one of the all-time great quarterbacks.
13:54He's seen the Super Bowl one time and lost.
13:57And in 16 years, never went back.
14:00You know what I mean?
14:00And that's something that, you know, talking to Dan about it, that's the one thing that he wished he had opportunity to do.
14:08Shime has him 10 spots ahead of Joe Montana, though, I believe.
14:11I love Dan Marino.
14:13Yes.
14:14Winning sucks.
14:15Shime does not even have – Joe Montana is not a top 10 quarterback in your mind?
14:20No, he's probably right around.
14:21What?
14:21Yeah.
14:2210?
14:23You missed that.
14:23See, Shime, see, now I just gave you props and calling out good stuff and have a good prediction.
14:30You're going to say something like that, man.
